Long Day’s Journey Into Nought 294

The days are already getting shorter again, and baseball seems as long ago and as far away as it has ever been.

Ah well, the past is the present, isn’t it? It’s the future too. So let’s keep grilling.

Happy summer solstice everyone, and to all the dads in our group I hope you have a happy fathers day. I can’t be with my kids but I had a nice video chat with my daughter and grandsons until “oops R is pooping gotta go bye”.

I smoked 3.5 pounds of pork shoulder on the grill earlier this week. I’ve tried that a couple of times before, but this is the first time that I started early enough that I wasn’t frustrated and pissed off by the time it was done.

    Per Phil Matier’s column yesterday:

It took a bit of debate, but the Oakland City Council has instructed staff to begin negotiations to sell the city’s half of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum site to the Oakland A’s….

“After the coronavirus shutdown, we are looking at a very, very serious budget deficit, and they are saying it could cost us $6 million just to maintain the site,” Gallo said. “We don’t have that kind of money. This way we can get some badly needed help.”

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Jun 22,2020 4:56 pm || Up

      East Bay Times:

In order to own the land, the A’s would likely need to pay at least the same $85 million they paid to the County, [City Councilman Noel] Gallo said.

“The Oakland A’s have a great interest in the Coliseum site,” Gallo said. “We may just compromise. You help us develop the Coliseum and we’ll help you with Howard Terminal.”

North Carolina has some of the most brazen GOP gerrymandering anywhere, as seen in this map of the 11th District, which after 2010 totally screwed the (relatively progressive) city of Asheville by dividing it between two otherwise rural districts. Thus ending the congressional career of Heath Shuler.

I give you the Ohio 1st congressional district. Take ~2/3 of Cincinnati, a city with 45% Black residents, and turn that into an R+5 district by grafting on Warren County.

I live on the east side of the city, which is the Ohio 2nd district and is even more conservative (R+9) because it stretches across the southern border of the state almost to West Virginia. Boundaries aren’t so obviously crazy though.

In some ways sports are tracking similar to reopening in general: decide we’re tired of distancing and get back on with living. Problem of course being all the new infections and deaths and stuff. And like reopening, it’s one thing to “loosen” rules, but if people don’t actually feel safe they’re not going to go to restaurants and nail salons regardless. It will be super interesting to see how many NBA and MLB players opt out. I could definitely see it becoming a groundswell.

Someone at bbtf made the point that if the players are the sorts to engage in risky behavior anyway, then they might as well play. That makes a little sense, except:
        – If they’re playing and someone gets sick his teammates (and opponents) should all start self-quarantining.
        – Even if they decide not to quarantine everyone, a contest heavily dependent on which team best avoids a pandemic becomes less fun for the fans. (Yes, sports is always partly about who can stay healthy, but this seems different).
        – As FSU says, some may just opt out in the first place.
        – There is also support staff to consider.

It should be pretty easy to maintain social distance in golf.

During last week’s PGA event, the second they’ve played since restarting, one player tested positive, withdrew and is in quarantine.

This week one more player and two caddies tested positive. The two caddies’ players have withdrawn from the tournament that starts tomorrow; that includes World #4 Brooks Koepka. Additionally, World #5 Webb Simpson, who won last week, had a family member test positive and has withdrawn and will quarantine.

My guess is infection between the participants was most likely in locker rooms or hotels, since outdoor transmission appears to be fairly uncommon, and distancing is easy on a golf course as you say. Or that they’re just unrelated exposures from family and friends. Either way, transmission risk among anyone who travels for a living and goes home in between has got to be orders higher than baseline. This whole pandemic is like a math equation that’s easy to understand for all but the willfully ignorant.

I enjoyed watching the tournament last weekend too, it was my fathers day sports treat.

Tech support question (after a lot of Googling DuckDuckGo-ing:

Is there any adverse consequence to disabling IPv6 on my home router?

I have always noticed that when I tried to download or update apps on my Pixel 3 on my home wifi, it went very slowly, compared to when I would do that on any other wifi (at a hotel for example). The last couple days nothing at all would update via the Google Play store; the first updating app would just get stuck on “Downloading…”. After trying all the “clear cache” etc. suggestions I stumbled on this one about disabling IPv6. Presto, that fixed it including the speed problem. So…how would I know if that has created a different problem?

    • andeux andeux Jun 24,2020 11:18 am || Up

      Short answer: no.

Longer answer: The world is running out of (or maybe already has) IPv4 addresses, so at some point everything will have to switch over to IPv6. At this point, big companies already have their IPv6 infrastructure in place, but a lot of consumer ISPs or older home networking equipment still doesn’t support it completely. So important sites like your bank or FK aren’t going to be IPv6-only anytime soon.

Alternatively, you could try a site like
      http://test-ipv6.com/
on your computer and/or phone to see if you have some configuration issue that could be fixed instead of turning it off completely.

(re-enables IPv6 on router) Ah, that’s it, the router supports IPv6 but my ISP doesn’t.

        test-ipv6:

Your DNS server (possibly run by your ISP) appears to have no access to the IPv6 Internet, or is not configured to use it. This may in the future restrict your ability to reach IPv6-only sites.

NFL figures out a new way to monetize the pandemic.

Under a plan shared with team presidents on Tuesday, the first six to eight rows of seating in every stadium — including on-field suites — will be off limits to fans this season. That move is officially to protect players, coaches and team staff from coronavirus exposure, but it would also free up that space to become lucrative sponsorship assets.

Sources said those seats will be covered by tarps that could include sponsor logos, similar to how EPL teams repurposed empty seating sections for ads during its return to play last week.

they would be…fine. I don’t know much about them, which is likely more than most people. Its gotta be warren or harris, who are the only people that have national apparati.

Harris can weather the “cop” stuff (Although there were a few cops she could have prosecuted but didn’t that may be harmful in some states). Warren’s biggest drawback is the harris fan backlash (I am reassured by smarter people her seat would remain a democrat)

As Andeux says, the willie brown stuff may actually hurt because it is an issue because she is a woman and the misogamy that we saw in 2016 never really got better.

In the Sunday Chron print edition Willie’s column and photo were right next to Phil Matier’s, headlined “Feds seek to unravel more City Hall corruption cases.” Not surprisingly, Walter (Wong) is better known to Phil Matier as a close crony of the late power broker Rose Pak, who was very very close to Willie.

OTOH, maybe the feds will drop the pursuit now that it’s been announced that Willie Brown is dead.

          Willie’s political analysis today:

-Polls show Biden with an 11-15 point lead
-He should be ahead by “much more” because of Trump’s mistakes.
-“Plus, as we know, there is often a disparity between what people tell pollsters and what they do when they actually fill out their ballots. So knock Biden’s lead in the polls down by half.”
-“Trump’s base…will vote for him again.”
-Put it together and it’s still a five- to seven-point race.”
          -“In other words, a toss-up.”

That issue has been reported every which way. Radio only needs the announcers and an engineer (who is local to each city) on site so that’s not adding very many people, and only the two on the team plane. It would be awfully tough to do a decent radio broadcast off monitor. Television requires quite a few more personnel. There will probably be only one television production, with the road team TV announcers, whether on site or in studio, calling the game using the home team feed. That also means fewer cameras for replays. It would be a real good time to install some robo-cameras, especially looking straight down the foul lines.

A Piute County commissioner compared Utah’s governor to Nazis, suggesting that Utahns will soon be required to offer a “Heil Herbert” salute.

“Hang on friends, it won’t be long before you are required to do a Sieg Heil Salute to Herbert,” tweeted Darin Bushman in response to news that Gov. Gary Herbert approved a mask mandate in Salt Lake and Summit counties that’s set to take effect Saturday. “Welcome to Utah now extend your right arm straight at 45 degrees keeping your hand parallel to your arm and offer your ‘Heil Herbert.’”

          From the indispensable Steve Berman:

The A’s were “optimistic” a few weeks ago that they’d land on a terrestrial station in the Bay Area, but this week I was told that there’s nothing new to report on that front. So why weren’t the A’s able to work out an arrangement? There may have been very little interest, if any, from stations that could 1) fit the A’s into their daily programming while 2) possessing a strong enough signal to make it worthwhile for the club. Or there was interest, but not from a station that the A’s felt comfortable aligning with (which was the main problem with their 2019 partner, KTRB). But the likeliest reason they weren’t able to work out something could be their exclusive agreement with TuneIn. Any additional radio partnership would have to be approved by them. And with Cumulus owning KNBR (the Giants’ flagship station) and perhaps even Entercom’s properties also shying away (due to the manner in which the A’s cut ties with 95.7 The Game), that wouldn’t leave many options.

          • lenscrafters Jul 9,2020 10:30 am || Up

I missed this earlier but yeah, this speaks volumes on how they see Beck. I remember debating Beck vs Hiura with aardvark during that draft and clearly I was wrong on Beck. His only redeeming trait at this point is his age as there’s still time for him to breakout, but this completely lost year negates a big chunk of that.

Missing on Beck and Murray in consecutive years certainly leads to a bleak outlook for the farm and with no stadium in sight, probably pushes the team towards a quicker teardown of the current roster (along with Fisher probably not wanting to pay the expected arb salaries of Chapman, Olson, Laureano, etc).

  32. Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Jun 30,2020 8:50 am

I can see why Kaval is pissed. This seems a little off topic for the Sierra Club.

“The Coliseum site is already approved for use as a stadium, is transit accessible, and would lift up surrounding East Oakland neighborhoods rather than displacing maritime businesses and workers,” said Sierra Club Northern Alameda County group chair Igor Tregub. “Howard Terminal, on the other hand, has less transit access and is vulnerable to sea-level rise.”

On the other hand, probably not a great sign that they haven’t been able to get the Sierra Club to stay out of this publicly.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Jun 30,2020 9:55 am || Up

Important to note that this is just one local Sierra Club chapter, which has been part of ongoing internecine strife with other chapters, mostly on a NIMBY vs YIMBY issues. The “Northern Alameda County” chapter is staunchly anti-development; many other SC chapters have come to understand that promoting housing density is really the pro-environmental position. And though they would never admit it, there is more than a hint of historically eugenicist underpinnings to the no-growth positions embraced by some of their chapters. The West Oakland Environmental Indicators project with whom the A’s have partnered, on the other hand, has been a demonstrably legitimate and important voice for actual Oakland residents in the larger project area for decades.

Also Igor Tregub is a known exaggerator who in 2015 had to apologize in the face of a libel lawsuit for having smeared an innocent man as a sex offender during an election campaign.

The political position staked out in this op/ed — keep the A’s in East Oakland — is something I’m sympathetic to, but some of the unsupported assertions used to back it up are frustrating.

    For example…

It is also critical to recognize that too many jobs at the Port of Oakland, which are primarily held by African-American residents and union members, would be lost if the A’s pursue a stadium at the Port of Oakland. It makes no sense to move an economic driver from one neighborhood to a different part of the city — and ruin another economic engine there.

…is there any evidence for the proposition that a ballpark at Howard Terminal will eliminate jobs at the Port?

    • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Jul 1,2020 10:38 am || Up

Other assertions which aren’t accurate include the Raiders “leaving behind a $65 million tab for Oakland taxpayers” (omitting that this was a deal the City/County negotiated and agreed to) and the Warriors “left us on the hook for $40 million in arena improvements” (actually owed by the Warriors, as recently adjudicated in the City’s favor).

The argument that Port jobs will be lost is more esoteric. Schnitzer Steel next door to HT could be impacted, but I’ve been told they’ve been on shaky financial footing for years, for reasons that have nothing to do with the ballpark proposal. The fear of Port jobs lost is more about the slow creep of non-industrial uses. Which is real, but already underway, and by this argument they never should have put retail dining hotel and residential uses in Jack London Square to begin with. The land controlled by the Port of Oakland and the adjacent former Oakland Army Base is solidly devoted to maritime/industrial uses, couldn’t really be used for anything else in the foreseeable future, and dwarfs the ballpark footprint probably 100 times over.

    Never change, NFL.

The NFL is considering requiring fans attending games this season to sign liability waivers shielding the teams from COVID-19 lawsuits, sources said. The waiver proposal is likely to be forwarded to clubs by the middle of next week as part of a broad range of league recommended best practices for re-opening stadiums amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Actually that sounds familiar. Most of the vacation rentals in our development have been occupied the last couple weekends and definitely will be this weekend. We have not reopened the swimming pool and related facilities because our HOA liability insurance would not cover a claim for somebody claiming to contract the virus there. When we do eventually reopen those facilities there will be some modification to the waiver form visitors have to sign to get them to acknowledge that risk. There may be some other precautions like removing all the tables/chairs/chaises and telling people to bring their own.

Our pool has been closed as well. The HOA actually took the opportunity to do some needed work on them. Then the work got delayed because quarantine and no inspectors to come out and approve it. So now no one knows when it will be open and it sounds like the owners are getting antsy with the Mgt company of the complex. I got a nice email with lots of attachments from LA county about regulations.

ESPN getting desperate, out of new “30 for 30” documentaries apparently, needs live sports back very very badly.

ESPN will air the Eagles concert “Live From The Forum MMXVIII” this holiday weekend. The Eagles spent the majority of 2018 on an extensive North American tour with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey joining Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit. Earning rave reviews from fans and critics alike, the quintet arrived at the Forum in Los Angeles for three sold-out concerts on September 12, 14, and 15. Highlights from all three shows have now been compiled for the new 26-song live album and concert film that will premiere on ESPN this Sunday, July 5th, at 8 PM EDT / 5 PM PDT, introduced by longtime Eagles fan ESPN’s Chris Berman.

“Sports and music have long been at the top of the list for being able to bring people of all types together. The Eagles have been doing just that for almost half a century,” said ESPN’s Chris Berman. “We at ESPN are thrilled beyond belief to share this premiere with everyone! What a wonderful way to cap off the holiday weekend!”

In a WhatsApp message that Forst sent to team employees on Sunday that was obtained by The Athletic, he wrote:

“Thanks again to you all for your understanding on the need to postpone today’s workout for the position players. Unfortunately, that is not the end of this story. MLB has informed me this evening that our test samples from Friday have not arrived at the lab. They were not delivered as intended on Saturday because of the federal holiday and then were not switched to Sunday delivery in time to arrive today. As of this moment, they are sitting at SFO waiting to fly to Salt Lake to be delivered to the lab by 1:30 Mountain Time tomorrow. On top of screwing up the logistics of this whole thing, neither MLB nor CDT (the company that collects the samples) communicated any of this to us until we pressed them for information, at which point all they could do was apologize, which frankly doesn’t really do much for us. Our best shot is to schedule a workout for tomorrow night (Ryan [Christenson, the A’s bench coach] will get you the details) with the hope that the samples arrive at the lab on time tomorrow and they are able to turn around your results in a matter of a few hours.

“I can tell you all what I expressed to Matt (Chapman) earlier today: this has nothing to do with us or our staff. The athletic training and stadium operations staffs here have worked tirelessly to get this incredibly challenging operation up and running. At this point, the blame lies with CDT and MLB and I won’t cover for them like I did earlier today. Despite having our schedule a week ahead of time, they didn’t alert us to the possibility of any complications around July 4th, and once there were issues, they did nothing to communicate that to us or remedy the situation until Nick (Paparesta, the A’s head athletic trainer) and I forced the issue at various times today. If possible, I’m as frustrated and pissed as you are (well, probably not as pissed as Matt is), and I assure you the rest of the staff is as well.”

Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday that the MLS is Back Tournament game between Nashville SC and Chicago Fire FC, scheduled for July 8, has been postponed.

The league confirmed that five Nashville players had tested positive for COVID-19 since arriving in Orlando on July 3, two at the weekend and three more on Monday night. Four more Nashville players are currently awaiting further testing after receiving inconclusive test results.

In addition to the five Nashville players, the league confirmed on Monday that 10 FC Dallas players and one player from a third club have also received confirmed positive tests. FC Dallas were withdrawn from the tournament on Monday.

    1. :07 has been abandoned as a first pitch time. All home games start at :10 or :40.

    2. The only first pitch after 7 p.m. Pacific time, either home or road, is Opening Night. Home night games are either 6:10 or 6:40. All the other West Coast teams are doing that as well. The Rangers are starting most of theirs at 8:05 p.m. local time which I suppose was a request from their RSN.

    3. All Saturday home games are 1:10 first pitch. YAY, that’s the way it should be for optimal beach/outdoor activity listening. If that doesn’t work for you live put it on the DVR.

    4. Why would they schedule a weekday 12:40 first pitch unless it’s required by the CBA? They have four 12:40 weekday games; one is required by the CBA (July 29 vs. Rockies, day before a Rockies home off day) and another benefits the A’s (Sept. 10 vs. Astros; A’s play in Arlington the next night). The other two should be night games and FK any inconvenience to the Angels’ or Rangers’ travel schedule.

Per agreement with Major League Baseball, the Rangers will play 8:05 p.m. CT weekday night home games versus teams in the Pacific time zone with those clubs starting weekday night home games against Texas at 6:05 p.m. PT/8:05 p.m. CT. (playing around with this while I finish my coffee) Another weird one: Start at home plate at Petco Park in San Diego and go due north. You will wind up smack dab in the middle of the athletic facilities at Washington State University. The football stadium and basketball arena are a few yards to the west (the line almost cuts through a corner of Beasley Coliseum) and the baseball field is a weak-ass ground ball to the east. En route you have to pass through a few miles of western Idaho.

I’m slowly getting on the side of there’s no way this is going to work. Between logistic issues like the testing bottlenecks and delays, the fact that there’s no day-to-day certainty that any team’s workout can actually take place, and that protocols call for instant quarantine of any player who’s just had contact with a positive teammate, I just don’t see this getting any better with teams traveling together and actual games taking place.

What happens when half a team needs to be quarantined because they’ve been in contact with a couple of positive teammates? What happens to a team’s rotation plans if a starting pitcher scheduled to pitch tests positive the day of? I just foresee lots of potential game cancellations in a bastardized 60 game season with a non representative product as teams field tattered rosters.

Yes, all of this. Ultimately I think the only way an MLB season happens is if they just decide to let people get sick…in other words, abandon the pretense that any protocol can protect most personnel, and accept that travel and games are guaranteed to produce more cases of exposure than they can possibly isolate. Since that means convincing players/union to essentially waive their own health concerns (just like attending a Trump rally!), I think there’s no way it happens in 2020.

The NBA is a more interesting test case, with smaller rosters and no travel it is perhaps theoretically possible they could isolate exposed athletes without taking out a whole team.

Oh yeah, I’ve been thinking that way all along (last couple months anyway, not really at first). The goal from the owners’ point of view was to play as short a regular season as possible to minimize salary outlays while still letting them get their hands into the postseason television treasure chest. I’m more interested in the mechanics of the attempt to get a season up and running, and the way it ultimately fails, than the prospect of any actual chickenshit baseball season. It has been just over 9 months since the A’s last played a meaningful game and it’s now just under 9 months more until (we hope) Opening Day 2021. We will get by, we will survive.

This answer on qualified immunity is very interesting. I’d like to think that this is him subtly saying he supports the goals of eliminating it (holding police departments and cities accountable for abuses by their officers) but just can’t get behind it publicly because it reads to his supporters and his caucus like an attack on individual officers. On the other hand, it could just be a dodge or a willful blindness to the actual legal issue.

One of the things that I saw in qualified immunity, and one of the reasons why [ending it] could be seen easily as a poison pill, is if you are going to go after character-driven, highly competent law enforcement officers, with the goal of making them more civil, giving them a higher level of responsibility from a civil perspective, you’re actually going to end up in situations where fewer officers are patrolling, as you noted earlier, some of the more challenging communities.

And so if you want to have a conversation about restitution and recourse under the umbrella of qualified immunity, I’ve actually said several times, count me in to that conversation, because that’s not about an officer; that’s about a culture, and the way that you make a culture more responsible is making the threshold for suing cities and departments easier because of the egregious acts of individuals. When you make it all about the individual officer, you run good cops out, you make it far more difficult to get anything accomplished, but if the actual conversation is around restitution and recourse, you can change the behavior of all officers, not simply one.

This, too, seems to be him saying “there are a lot of terrible, violent, racist cops out there,” while couching it in conservaspeak that leaves open whether he will ever get behind really doing something about the problem.

I would say the biggest issue in policing in America is probably integrity and/or character, from my perspective. Character in law enforcement produces excellent results. The lack of it produces situations that we all come to regret.

Kind of disappointing that they are just skipping the NL East rotation (I was looking forward to finally hosting my Mets fan buddy), but I bet they are trying to, in a small way, reduce travel by keeping interleague geographically aligned.

They would already have done a lot of work on the 2021 schedule by this time, because by now they would already have submitted next season’s schedule to the Players Association for approval. That work must have been advanced during the dead time and they wouldn’t have wanted to start from scratch with AL West vs. NL East etc.

Presumably A’s Access and season ticket holders all over the league are getting e-mails today trying to persuade them to roll their 2020 money over into 2021.

I did get an email about the schedule. No explicit money ask. But I think they are treating the rollover as a fait accompli for anyone who didn’t already opt for a refund of early season tickets when that was offered back in May.

          I love Canha.

He told [his Cal public health professor] that he had a full-time job (outfielder for the A’s) but was currently working remotely (training in Arizona) and was unsure when he would have to report back to work (at the Coliseum). Given all that, there was a chance he might not be able to catch every lecture; he might need to tape them for later, which was against class policy.

“Well, you can’t miss the final exam. Can you just ask your coach if you can have two hours off for you to take it?” she asked.

          “Um … no,” he replied.

This seems like a good approach. Playing shallow helps if you make the right reads instantly, playing deep is more forgiving of a slow read or wrong first step. Interesting intersection of innate feel for the ball versus stat-based positioning…is it worth it to play shallow and take away basehits on short flies, even if it means giving up some XBH in the alleys?

I feel like route running has to be something that VR could really help with. Why the A’s can’t just have 1,000 videos from CF perspective and train OF’s from the crack of the bat, I don’t know.
