A’s looked pretty flat in the first inning and a half.
Now turning it around thanks to Angels miscues on the bases and in the field.
Rare fielding screw up by Calhoun gives us a run.
Seth Brown wondering if Soaker still thinks he’s a flash in the pan.
I said 10 games, or days. This is Game 8/Day 9, so I’ll stick with my prediction that he will make a quick turn on to
In truth I turned on the TV a few minutes ago after returning from Oregon and I haven’t seen him at all except for that first 19-4 game. So I have no clue. On that homeward trip I did not drive on Brown Material Road but I did pass a whole lot of dust-coated RVs with bicycles strapped everywhere they will fit.
the city was so nice this weekend
North Oakland to The Riptide in 20 minutes on Sunday night!
That’s incredible. Also, you were down the street from me.
Can report same RVs now clogging our roads
Nationals beat the Mets 11-10 thanks to a three-run Kurt Suzuki walkoff homer to cap a seven-run ninth, after the Mets had scored five in the top half.
The Angels are bad but I’m worried Fiers is going to out-bad them today.
Simmons really giving everyone a run for their money though.
Maybe Semien can give him some fielding tips.
Angels are pretty bad
Naw, we can outslug Fiers’ suck tonight.
Well they’re certainly putting this theory to the test.
Call it a wash. Now it’s a bullpen test [hides in bathroom]
The woman wearing the “Pound Town” jersey needs to think about her life choices.
I like Bayrouti.
he is smooth. I like him. I like most of the replacements
Rays managed to split their doubleheader with Baltimore.
Cleveland lost to the ChiSox.
treinen for the 6th?
Treinen’s up but this is a game where you almost have to find a way to work in Puk. His usage has been baffling.
Fletcher trout and ohtani in the 8th sound low pressure
Shit.
that is rough
Jesus. Im almost glad I cant see this. 1 bullpen arm needs to have consecutive good games
One one hand, at least all the many homers our pitchers have been coughing up over the last three games have been solos. On the other hand, it’s annoying as hell.
Man that outing was awful Blake
They’ve gotta get creative and do something about this shit. There’s just too few games left to keep trying the Treinen and Trivino well hoping they’ll figure it out.
Luzardo is ready, Bassitt can be moved to the pen, Puk can be given a real shot…it just feels like there’s a lack of urgency here.
Puk has got to be one of the dumbest callups I can remember.
Thanks, and go As.
At this point I’m starting to wonder if they are hiding an injury. He hasn’t pitched in eight days, despite two opportunities with 4+ run leads where he was rested and the rest of the pen wasn’t.
I think Melvin just fundamentally doesn’t trust rookie pitchers
Well, that’s not quite true. He threw rookie Puk into two big situations immediately. The problem is Puk failed in his first two tests. And now Melvin doesn’t trust him at all.
The A’s need a couple games with big leads and Puk needs to perform well in those games. I’m more upset that Murphy hasn’t played yet.
Melvin says Murphy will start today or tomorrow vs one of LAA’s lefty starters.
Didn’t they have a couple of games with big leads and he didn’t use him?
one in kc, one in ny.
He’s probably been waiting for a game where the A’s are behind when the starter gets knocked out. There hasn’t been one of those since Puk’s call up.
Like today, for instance
Puk! Puk! Puk! We want A.J.!
Yup, we’re getting Puk’d today.
Vegas needs to get swept so we can just throw bodies at this train wreck.
Petit has had a hell of a season but it looks like this will be his third straight season with 90 IP out of the bullpen. I’m dubious about what kind of performance the A’s will get for $5.5M in 2020.
Triples machine.
The record book says there have only been 11 2-triples games in Oakland A’s history entering this season and I’ll bet almost all of them were on the road. The book doesn’t list them all, just the last one (July 26, 2018, Matt Chapman at Arlington).
I checked Rickey’s record and he never had a 2 triples game in his career, with the A’s or anyone else.
SB&HBoR!
This kid is really doing a heckuva job.
this is ridiculous.
It’s a joke that two umpires didn’t know the count for sure enough to tell Ausmus to get the FK back into the dugout.
Scioscia should be fined and suspended and outs should be given for that dumb display of losing track of the count.
Scioscia has gotten a lot more handsome.
I thought ausmus would just have a little conversation then leave. that was lame
upton has a home run and a walk today
Im so triggered by this pen I want to leave in Spria to maybe save a few pitches from Hendriks.
Pissed-off Aussie not FKing around tonight.
Nice win, fellows!
With Burfict, Incognito, and Antonio Brown, the over-under for murders committed by Oakland Raiders this year is 1.5.
They had a logical first victim in Nathan Peterman, but the Raiders put him on IR to start the season.
They could murder Mark Davis on the Coliseum 50 yard line during the coin flip and no Oakland jury would convict them.
A’s edition
She didn’t remember any of the guys!
Ramon back Friday-ish. Piscotty not doing any baseball activity yet. Luzardo pitching Friday in PCL playoffs.
https://www.sfchronicle.com/athletics/article/A-s-outfielder-Ramon-Laureano-could-rejoin-14411688.php#
Hard to see this little Argentinian fellow taking a set from Nadal.
Man, he sure did give him a scare in the first though.
The second too, but just didn’t have enough to derail Rafa. The Berrettini match earlier against Monfils was super entertaining, but I can’t see him beating Rafa. If Medvedev beats Dimitrov, a final against Nadal could be fantastic.
Murphy time
I fking CAN NOT STAND that the nbc streaming app will show like 2 seconds of the game before going to a non skippable advertisement and then back to the game.
Thanks, and go As.
Really need Laureano back against lefties. Pinder and Profar in the corners isn’t gonna get it done.
Occasionally it will get it done.
need a new dee hache
A couple of nervous moments blocking balls, but no issues with the pitch framing so far.
He did set off the #CIalarm
not a bad day.
I don’t accept this fake news that the A’s are behind Cleveland and Tampa Bay. We have fewer losses than both of them.
tampa having played FOUR MORE GAMES
That is extra weird because we started a week before everyone else.
Not only did we play the two in Tokyo, but then the real season started with 18 straight, so we were at least 3 or 4 games ahead of everyone except the Mariners at that point.
Now we get another 16 straight (plus the suspended game in there).
While Tampa gets three off days in the last two weeks
Why did they pull the kid? I’m happy to see him out, but this is some Spring Training nonsense.
Lame
If you’re going to shorten his starts, whatever, but making a pitching change in the middle of the fourth inning of a 1-0 game for a guy who isn’t hurt makes a mockery of the competition.
Murphy!
Good, we don’t need to see Phegley ever again.
So…Puk next inning?
Yes please.
Nope Petit is warming up.
Bob is determined to break Petit.
Petit up. Looks like he’s just starting to stretch, so Roark probably staying in.
Coco said he “never came close to scoring 100 runs” and I thought that can’t be right, he must not know the back of his own baseball card very well, but looking it up 93 was his high (2013 A’s) and he never had another season above 86.
I will not doubt Coco’s knowledge of his career stats again. He knows he had 5 HBP in his career (in 6627 PA).
Gameday shows 4 straight balls to KD before the groundout – how bad were the first 2?
Pretty obvious that Profar’s best position is in the OF.
lot less throwing.
Thanks, and go As.
Surely Puk for the ninth. Surely.
Soria only threw 10 pitches; I’d think they’d just stick with him.
If they score here, it’s Puk. Otherwise it’s Hendriks. Bob has always managed a 4 run lead like he does if it’s a save situation.
True. One odd thing with Hendriks is that we know he’s pitching on Friday because he’s already in that game.
There’s times I’ve wondered if this type of overuse has had some kind of effect on the bullpen collapses in the 2012-14 playoff games.
I don’t wonder at all. I’m certain of it.
I don’t think the A’s bullpen was unusually overused then or now, and the bullpen was overall pretty average, maybe slightly below, in those postseasons.
It doesn’t seem right that Hendriks is already in that game when he didn’t get to face a batter yet.
I didn’t seem right as it happened either.
2-2 count.
The Tigers’ current pitcher, Victor Alcantara, was optioned to Toledo, and he’s on the 40-man roster but wasn’t included in the September call-ups.
The Tigers have to replace him and four of the guys currently in the lineup (Goodrum and Jones on IL, Castellanos traded, Harrison released). Somebody will inherit Harrison’s 2-2 count. A’s just have to replace Piscotty and Hundley, but Phegley and Grossman have already played and been removed.
Harrison also has a chance to add a strikeout to his batting totals a month after being released.
I’m startled by Josh Harrison being released. He used to be good.
Melvin also said he’s going to replace Laureano even though he will start the nightcap. Canha is still available, so he slots into CF, and Pinder should slide over to right.
Whether Brown plays left, or Neuse comes in to bump Profar to left, may depend on whether Gardenhire announces who is pitching the 8th before the Tigers bat in the 7th.
Due up for the A’s in the 8th are Laureano’s spot, Hundley’s spot, and Semien, so Melvin has some options with the triple-switch.
I know I was joking before, but that’s kind of funny that my “between the make up game and the real game” as his return being correct amuses me.
Canha in for Laureano, Murphy for Hundley, and Neuse for Piscotty (with Profar and Pinder changing positions) as predicted.
So Murphy probably has one chance to still have homered in his debut. Neuse may or may not get to bat in his debut (he’s due up 7th)
Anyone have a copy of Dr Dan Streetmentioner’s Time Traveller’s Handbook of 1001 Tense Formations?
it better not be
I’m fine with Hendriks in these spots when most/all of the other likely options, other than Soria, present a high risk of two walks to lead off and then Hendriks coming in anyway.
So, Ramon comes back, platoon brown and pinder?
They’re already platooning Brown and Pinder.
I’m not sure who will sit against RHP, out of Ramon, Canha, Brown, Grossman, and Khris.
Canha pretty much has to play right? He’s still leading the team in wRC+.
I would go with Brown over Khris against RHPs at least until Brown shows signs of slowing down. So you have Grossman, Ramon, Canha, Brown for OF-DH against RHPs and Pinder, Ramon, Canha, KD for OF-DH against LHPs.
There’s also the Profar problem who should be part of the OF mix as well but I think they’re going to go with Profar/Neuse platoon at 2nd.
Sadly, Profar is probably a better offensive option than Pinder right now even against LHPs. I would probably choose Pinder anyway for defense.
murphy walked up to the passenger?
What is a man, deep down inside, but a raging beast with nothing to hide?
I want this to be true.
yes yes yes
I wen’t back on the computer. first AB can’t tell, too much noise after profar HR. Second AB, Absolutely it is. third AB He lead off and there was too much fosse noise to tell
The whole team should embrace a Stooges playlist. Gimme Danger would be a fantastic walkup song.
Buchter can have No Fun.
6-man rotation = trying to get 7 innings out of the starters?
bailey and roark will play CC sabbathia for the 2019 A’s
Per Slusser, Petit had to go home to Venezuela for personal reasons, will miss the weekend series. I hope his family is ok.
oh no. I hope its a ploy to get rest
he was out but come on marcus
I didn’t see this one, but he has had some shaky moments out there the last few games.
The official scorer was rather generous in adding a hit to Pujols’ career total.
Brett’s ERA would appreciate a reconsideration of that decision. Kind of a “we’re not quite awake” inning to start.
good thing bob didn’t challenge trout being out
phegley? another lost call
He just doesn’t receive the ball smoothly at the bottom of the zone.
It might be time for Bob to have Brett send a message. This is out of control.
COCO WAS RIGHT AGAINT !! he was hit 5 times
This is something Lou might actually be pretty good at, later in the game.
Getting on base the next four times is a nice message by Semien.
4-run lead now gives the A’s a free shot in the top of the 9th if they want it.
Diekman is easily wild enough for plausible deniability.
Safe. But don’t ever do that again.
That was obviously a very close play, but I don’t know how you can look at those replays and confirm an out.
They didn’t confirm an out, it was “call stands”. I would have confirmed safe. The Trout play, on quick glance I thought was inconclusive and not worth a challenge of a single with one out in the top of the first.
I don’t know. I challenge the first inning with the only dangerous part of the angels line up
i also hope MLB changes the rules to allow the manger to keep an call stands challenge.
wow two blown calls at first and bob got burned, I’m thinking they need a new replay guy
damn, coco again. first with the one head look from bard with a runner on 2nd, then the balk. he is good when he talks
I caught a bit of him last night. He sounded more engaged and comfortable than he did earlier in the year.
Trout’s two homers in this series have been a bit impressive.
Baseballs are not supposed to go where that baseball went.
I was in the Treehouse for the first few innings on Tues, in the second off the standing counter rows, and the ball nearly reached us. Amazing power
He doesn’t even look like he’s swinging that hard.
LOL brett. asking for a new ball before trout was 5 feet out of the batters box
Him collapsing like a house of cards on contact was also entertaining.
Brett is used to getting a 3-week vacation here and a month off there every year so he may be running out of gas.
Even with our infield defense you’d have to figure a pitcher who strikes out < 5K/9 is probably not going to have much long term success.
I’m not sure what’s going on with Pinder. He seems to have stopped hitting even lefties this year.
Things are getting a bit Buttery here.
I freaking love the Angels bullpen.
A thought that hasn’t passed through Brad Ausmus’ mind in quite some time.
So how do you think the victims’ families feel now, Judge Cramer you fucking asshole?
It seemed like the boys hit the snooze button a few too many times this morning but this is now looking more promising.
90 feet at a time works just fine
KD is 16 for 70 career with the bases loaded?? That’s remarkably bad.
16 for 71 now, but we’ll take it.
Have to say, though, I was really hoping to witness three different pitchers walking three straight batters with the bases loaded.
Next year.
I have a theory. Theoretically every hitter should be better than baseline with bases loaded, since the pitcher has to throw strikes. If you’re worse, you’re a head case who psyches himself out in the most opportune situation.
It’s certainly a place where you could measure “clutch.”
And we know KD is susceptible to “the creature.”
Pinder is 1-29 in his career with the bases juiced. (The 1 was a GS turning a 3-run deficit into a lead).
Puk now in line for the postgame miller lite shower.
They somehow survived with Lou on the mound and Diekman in the bullpen.
OK this has to stop now. Whatever it takes because someone is going to get seriously hurt.
I don’t know if Diekman is accurate enough to do it.
If it had been two out and Trout up, rather than Fletcher up with Trout on deck…
The offense doing their part to allow DieBBman to come on for the 9th.
*like*
Thanks, and go As.
Ken trying to play the card of how resilient the A’s are after losing the game against the Yankees. I think the fact it is slegnA has a touch more to do with it.
Rewatching the 7th, it’s pretty astounding how bad the Angels catcher was at framing pitches. There were two maybe three strike 3s he cost his reliever in the Profar at bat. It goes beyond Phegley’s level of badness – the catcher looked like he was actively trying to help the A’s.
Still trying to wrap my head around where Trout hit that ball. Crazy.
As Ken noted during the broadcast that general area has been reached previously.
Longest I ever saw was this one. I was with av.
https://www.mlb.com/giants/video/trouts-two-run-moonshot/c-30676759
old friend emilio pagantrying to close out the jays in the 9th with a 2 run lead
tried to blow it, came up short. rays win
perhaps with an infield of sogard, wendel and robertson
Feels like the Rays last 200 games have been against the Mariners, Padres, Orioles, Tigers, and Blue Jays.
Yeah and probably those useless Boston pissants will be eliminated and not care by 9/20 when their turn comes
And next week we all get to play AL West teams. TB/CLE get TX/LA and we get HOU. Good times.
And all of them at the Trop.
Season ticket price reductions of up to 21% for the Giants, plus a “signing bonus” for early renewals and the ability to roll some unused tickets into the following season.
Another sold out season!
LOL
I’m glad “Chard Nelson” is so ashamed of himself that he gave a fake first name.
