Righthanded Profar homer!
But Profar at DH is looking pretty good!
Patient new guy!
Jurk store is gonna heat up just in time for the playoffs and become a folk hero, isnt he?
I’m not mad at it.
like getting a second baseperson at the waiver deadline
If he wins about 10 games single-handedly I might not hate him.
In my handy Papiamentu to Italian dictionary, “Jurickson Profar” translates to “Fury Gene Tenacci.”
This part
seems to have gotten lost in translation.
I’d take that 1972 World Series 1.313 OPS tho.
I would also buy a share of that.
And “Seth Brown” may be Oregonian for “Joe Rudi.”
Let me see him against the OF wall before I confirm.
Im all on board with this.
I can’t decide whom to root against in this Cleveland-Tampa Bay series, nor whether I want someone to sweep it.
I’m rooting for a hurricane-related cancellation Sunday forcing both teams to fly back to Tampa Mon Sept 30.
with each being a half game behind the twins for the 2nd WC and ALCD
Forgot how annoying that appliance store jingle after strikeouts is.
That might be it for CC.
Has anyone told phegley that pitch framing is a thing?
Slusser said on her most recent podcast that he has been working hard on his framing lately. She said she thinks his focus on it may be causing him trouble blocking balls in the dirt.
I can’t with that podcast. the duty free guitar riff drives me away
Someone should make a compilation of cheesy public domain podcast intro music.
Michael Kay just pointed out that Brett’s jersey is half sweat already.
This is a really really bad matchup for Anderson.
judging from all these singles, I am guessing the A’s have no advance scouting data
safe safe?
safe out
Goddamnit
Fucking hell
that was an ok play. I’m not dinging profar for it
I hate that middle infielders have to keep their foot on the bag and risk having their leg broken.
It sucks, but you have to get one out there. The foot has to stay on the bag.
that was close to utley on gardener. he slid really late and soiked profar
I don’t see how you can allow the “neighborhood play” in a world where replays exist.
And not allowing the neighborhood play but limiting slides to plausible attempts to be safe seems like a safer combination than allowing the neighborhood play but also allowing runners to go out of their way to injure infielders.
jurickson was joking when gardner got up and gardner was red ass. I really hate him
Personally, it should be easy to enforce. On a play with the runner going from first to second, the left field half of the bag is dedicated to the fielder. The first base half of the bag is dedicated to the runner. If a runner slides hard enough to pass their half of the bag and cause either A) physical contact or B) the fielder to abandon their position, it’s runner’s interference. If the fielder positions themselves in the runner’s half of the bag, anything goes by the runner and any blocking of the bag would likewise be considered fielder’s interference.
I thought the old rules, including no review for neighborhood play, were fine. The reviews for missing the bag strike me as a not as bad version of the hand-coming-off-the-bag replays, and it’s not clear that the current version is any safer gor the fielders.
Once replay existed (not the rules but the actual existence) the neighborhood play made it too clear that too many liberties were being made on it. I’m not opposed to actually doubling/quadrupling the size of the second base bag to give more room for the fielder around the neighborhood.
Fourth time’s a charm.
Surprised no one tried to Jeffrey Maier that.
Christ stop hitting our players.
Stop FKing hitting our players.
Seriously.
Really liking new Theth.
i don’t know what to make of him, but Joseph i think is not long for the roster
BABIP luck or not, the kid is good.
This is going to get interesting especially if Hendriks isn’t available tonight.
He should be available for one inning only.
Scoring more runs is certainly the preferred solution.
I’m OK with Diekman being unavailable.
Other than the one Torres almost hit out, Brett has been a grounder machine tonight.
Old acquaintance Cory Gearrin.
that can’t be legal?
did he do that last year?
Chapman only had 1 SB (and 6 CS) in his career before that?!
why did they leave gearin in for brown?
I have a theory that Boone is secretly a bad manager.
Seth Brown and his bat of renown!
I like this one.
I’ve been traveling in Seth Brown’s homeland and have been off the Internet and away from baseball, except for a Hillsboro Hops game last night and the last few innings at a sports bar tonight, so Aces beat me to that one.
I feel like I’m missing all the fun with this 10-game legend, a shooting star who will be retained over the winter, hit .080 in the Cactus League, .060 at Vegas in April and be DFA’d by early May.
My softball team is the Lowell Park Hops, and we use the Hillsboro Hop logo on our caps and jerseys. In green and gold, natch.
We were at a game in LV when he hit 3 HRs – on the bandwagon for sure!
What the hell is Boone wearing? It looks like a short-sleeve hoodie over a long-sleeve compression shirt.
more comments during that half inning than pitches
That felt like a random 6th inning we would have that pisses me off. I like the other side.
Going that easy on our best available reliever was a real gift. I thought the Yankees’ M.O. these days was working the count,
Michael Kay was talking earlier about how they looked lackadaisical during the sweep in Oakland. I guess the green brings it out in them.
It does that to me too, man.
[thinks for a minute]
Cleveland just intentionally walked Sogard to load the bases for Pham. And it worked.
I would really think about Puk in the 9th instead of Hendriks.
Ok definitely Puk.
Its a four run lead. Bob needs to stop pitching the only good relievers in low leverage situations
Might need him for three innings tomorrow with Road Homer pitching in this place.
At this point send Petit out for the 9th.
one more for yusmeiro
A Semien!
You just cannot throw that pitch to Marcus this year.
2 years/$10 million + a club option for Petit was a fantastic signing.
I thought it was a terrible mistake when they signed him… I was wrong
My thought was, roughly, “oh, some reliever. I guess we’ll see!”
Manaea’s hair/mustache combination right now is incredible.
New Seth would have hit the HR off Benoit instead of popping up.
Concur with GM. He could pass fir Rin Glass as Det Harris on Barney Miller.
Treinen for a batter?
If he can just throw this exact pitch over and over like he’s doing, it will be very successful.
that was nice. do that again
Profar!!! Love that guy.
Never once doubted him.
Ken & Vince have been on this for a while, that he’s really been playing better lately. The throws still scare the FK out of me, and I could see him launching some wild one at the worst possible moment, but he has made some pretty spectacular plays in the field lately as well as come up with some timely hits. I can see why they keep playing him, nerve-wracking as it may be.
Have a night Jurk store!
What a weird game. I didn’t think we had a chance in the 4th.
Brad Gilbert shouting out the A’s win on the US Open broadcast is fun. Medvedev playing a helluva match right now.
The Cardinals and Reds are going to play doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday after a rainout today.
Wow. Well that should be fun.
Manaea starts tomorrow, per Slusser. They really don’t want Fiers pitching in New York.
Welcome back, Kotter!
Yankees fans are sure every fly ball they hit is going out.
Murphy!
Sweet, hopefully they give him a decent amount of starts.
not blackburn though
Heh agreed.
In terms of 40 man, I’m guessing Joseph/Tanner Anderson gets DFA’d for Manaea/Murphy.
clearly joseph has not taken his opportunity.
Interesting that Mateo is still not being called up though.
Someone has to play in the AAA playoffs.
not if you are a rivercat
Murphy will be in NY tomorrow
Kaprilian/holmes to vegas
Getting to the end of this season with Luzardo/Puk in the majors and Holmes/Kaprielian/Jeffries healthy and on the verge would be a nice accomplishment for the org.
I don’t want to say anything yet, but this game is going better than I expected
Oly! He seems to really see the ball well off German.
that home plate umpire took the bat out of chapman’s hands. Home plate umpires should be fined for calling a swing with less than 2 strikes
got german to 90 pitches through 5
meh
Maybe throwing that breaking ball to Sanchez isn’t a good idea?
That missed chance hurt. If you’re Neuse you’re not gonna get a borderline ball four call so swing the damn bat, rookie.
Neuse is going to have to hit those belt-high fastballs.
Umpire should be suspended for this performance.
A’s got a big break on one, but yeesh he has been bad
that was foul yeah?
Yeah inexplicable that NYY didn’t challenge that, 7th inning, go ahead run, huge potential reward for minimal risk.
Another data point for my Boone is bad theory.
9 outs, tho
Trying to imagine a called strike on a pitch from Diekman, coming up empty.
The A’s are winning the
teamLOB contest 21-4.10-3
Neuse catch.
that is two ks on perfect pitches for neuse
2B is clearly a race to the bottom for us.
But let me tell you it was great running around doing all the weekend errors and being able to keep the game on.
Anyone shocked? Anyone? Anyone?
Should be Hendriks here. Yankees ate out of good relievers.
Good half of the lineup due up
Saturday late season extra inning games against the Yankees. We just need a bad balk call and it can be 2012 again
Survived two innings of Lou.
But not three.
Yeah that pitch was horrible, missed location by like two feet. Take your two Good Lou innings and move on.
Puk was well rested.
Idea for the Bears: 100% running plays, don’t even put a QB on the field.
The Cheez-It Bowl is not going to accept having Cal’s offense shoved down its throat again.
for murphy and manaea there needs 2 roster spots, yeah? Joseph and buchter?
Probably Tanner Anderson. Maybe Wendelken.
Damn. Back in April I thought Wendelken was going to be good.
thats 29 i think. next year no blackburn
Blackburn DFA for Harvey in a few days.
so, today the same as yesterday?
Many walks, few runs? Yeah, looking that way.
Manaea hitting 93-94 in the first inning.
Excellent first inning for Manaea. Touched 94, hit locations, SamoFro in full effect.
You just know Bob stayed up late last night trying to figure another way to keep Profar’s bat in the lineup.
He had a .929 OPS in August, but the idea of needing to keep his bat in the lineup still seems batshit to me.
right handed Grossman or profar?
Can Sean Murphy play LF?
was that A’s fan eating a burger out of a styrofoam box?
so DP for Khris?
Found a hole!
thank god the umpre didn’t have a glove
Pinder is a great guy to have up when you’re trying to get out of a jam.
WE MIGHT SEE DULL TODAY!!
of course
I don’t get how this team hits into so many fking double plays. They have the 4th highest FB percentage in the league but they’re top 3 in GDPs.
now to score 6 in the top
Now?
Happ is not good.
OTOH, neither are Profar, Neuse, Phegley.
Great effort by Glan and Dallas to spend the whole start of T4 talking about the no hitter last year.
We really need Laureano back.
Agreed LC. He is that timely hit to start or cash in on a rally.
I was just thinking the same thing re Laureano. Besides the obvious value of replacing a bad hitter with a good one (especially against LHP), and improving OF defense, having a more aggressive hitter mixed in with all the walks seems to really pay off. I felt the same way about Cespedes when he was here.
Sean looks tired, velocity is down a bit.
He’s missing pretty badly. Not sure why they waited until after the third walk to even get someone up in the bullpen.
Olson is fking awesome.
Yeah, that should be it for Manaea.
Phew. Now lets get those 6 runs, and then go to the bullpen.
I’m thinking that tandem starting Manaea/Luzardo would be something they should really explore.
Next year, do you think they carry Fiers, Manaea, Puk, cotton, luzardo, bassitt?
In a perfect world, Fiers, Manaea, Montas, Luzardo, Puk. Bassitt probably ends up in there somewhere, because pitchers get hurt.
montas! forgot
Fiers, Montas, Manaea (if healthy) are locks. Bassitt is pretty close unless they want to have him as a reliever. One of Luzardo/Puk is in the rotation, the other is in the minors. Cotton is a non factor at this point.
this game is not fun
Ryan Dull is warming up.
I was very confused by this comment for a moment.
way to give your pitcher some rest dudes
That was pathetic.
Laureano doesn’t necessarily get that
FK yeah new guy!
This Dull game just turned Neuse.
I was about to post that phing for Neuse was essential.
sleeper agent
Here comes Diekman…
Verlander no hitting the Jays with no hits in a no hitter.
No hitter.
Get Diekman the f outta there, please.
17 pitches 7 strikes. pull him now
19-7 strikes
20-8.
DFA
The A’s should have been taking note of this too. Maybe if BoMel was, he wouldn’t have come out for the 8th. The fact is even when Diekman gets results, the process is still bad.
He should definitely be behind Puk and honestly, maybe even Buchter. A reliever that can’t throw strikes is a reliever who can quickly help the other team, even in their last gasps, get back into the game. The A’s have historically shied away from relievers like this – I have no clue why they acquired him.
Back out for the 8th. WTF?
26-10
if they lose, its on diekamn and melvin
Wtf is going on? We’re using Trivino here?
Important to get him back in there against the guy who walked him off yesterday.
This whole inning is puzzling.
If guys aren’t available, Hendriks has to pitch 2. This is getting ridiculous.
Now he can get a save.
if you are not going to use puk, why is he here? He could have done walk single walk
Olson is singlehandedly winning this game.
now for sure
too bad he can’t pitch
just get an out. its ok
Why is Puk on the team if he never pitches?
Who could possibly have seen that coming?
ottovino 7 pitches 6 strikes
I just don’t understand Trivino coming in at all. It’s like BoMel was so intent on not using Hendriks for 2 that he lost all sight of everything else. And the “everything else” here is a struggling reliever who already went 2+ yesterday and should not be facing the top of the lineup again.
Putting in a tired Trivino was, in all likelihood, not going to let you avoid going to Hendriks and instead just escalated the situation.
And all the more so after sending out a pitcher unable to throw strikes to walk the lead-off batter first.
Worst loss of the season. They gave them this game on a silver platter.
Terrible terrible terrible.
Awful managing. Also Semien needs to make that play in the eighth.
As terrible as the 8th and 9th were from a pitching standpoint and Managing standpoint, let’s not lose sight of the batters unable to score on JA Happ
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Using Trivino was insane. I can’t remember a less defensible move by Bob.
diekman of the 8th?
Fair. That whole situation just screamed for Puk on five days rest.
Really, using Treinen over Puk with a six run lead in the ninth inning on Friday should have committed Melvin to using Puk today. It was nice to get Treinen a clean inning there, but it meant he wasn’t available today when they needed him.
My hot take is that Melvin panic-manages a little at Yankee stadium.
Hendriks probably threw 50 pitches in the bullpen yesterday…
Could be the worst game of Melvin’s career.
I took the kids to the local swap meet. Checked my phone and assumed Gameday was broken. Why on Earth would you send Lou out there after 2+ yesterday? Agree with all the comments above that this is one of the biggest BoMel clusters I can remember.
Not having a Labor Day game tomorrow sucks for me, but maybe everyone on the team plane will get blackout drunk and forget today’s nightmare.
and nothing until tuesday. even then its the angels which are always high stress games for me
???
Goodness gracious. Angels and Tigers this week will be nice but there ain’t no Angels and Tigers on the schedule in October.
My hope is a favorable month here gets a little rest for Hendriks and Petit, some confidence innings for Trivino, Treinen and Puk, and a strategy/miracle to use Luzardo and Harvey respectively.
The one thing the October schedule does have is more off days.
(Hopefully not all off days.)
Trivino’s next “confidence innings” will be the ones he throws in his mind when he’s at the Molokai retreat with the sports psychologist.
Hey SF-based FKers and pizza aficionados, I highly recommend Cellarmaker House of Pizza on Mission near C.Chavez. Detroit-style deep square pizza with delicious cheese crispy along all outside edges. With excellent beer.
that is 2 blocks from my house
I tried to go there on Saturday a couple of weeks ago and gave up when I couldn’t find anywhere to park.
next to my house
or continue up mission, turn left on virginia, turn left on cooleridge, and then park near fair. there is lots of parking there.
It just boggles my mind that this is a thing that people do.
its super accessible through public transit.
I wasn’t going there to go there. I was on my way back from somewhere else in the car and had the idea to stop there. I try to never drive anywhere if I have the choice.
Thats totally legit.
Also there is scoot… my favorite non-transit option.
i don’t think its that accessible from GM’s house. two trains. I can’t think of the bus. Maybe 50 minutes on the 48
L to Civic Center, BART to 24th and then walk is probably the fastest right now. The 48 is a straight shot but I think it hasn’t been running the full route lately.
48 has no route changes that Im aware of.
It’s been running only as far west as West Portal at night sometimes. Not sure why.
Its 37 min from the beach to 24th and mission and then a five-minute walk on the 48
Its 30 min on the L and 5 minute on Bart and a five-minute walk.
25 minutes driving + parking time.
that is time dependent. It took my youngest an hour to get from 24/folsom to 41/Quintara. in the middle of summer.
I mean the Sunset is a barren wasteland that barely has enough density to support the transit that it does have and refuses to densify to the point that it justifies further improvements.
Bart to the L might make more sense.
zoning in the sunset is offensive
and all the upzoning SF did was in black and latino neighborhoods because we are a racist city.
Cellermakers is great, but if you are going for the Detroit Style Pizza, square pie guys is a nose a head at the finish line in our estimation
The Orioles pushed the Rays to extras but got walked off.
The ChiSox (and Ross Detwiler) also do not appear to be much help.
Rays lose! Game 1 of a doubleheader to get Baltimore out a day earlier for hurricane reasons, I guess.
I’m thinking this is a blueprint to get into Hendriks’ bank account: Career saved by tarot card reader wife met on Instagram.
I could have introduced him to the Ex Mrs Aces and had her do energy readings and Reiki in exchange for season tix or something.
What the actual fuck is he talking about?
Joseph claimed by Farhan.
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Thanks, and go As.
Jacob Rees-Mogg’s anachronistic upper class accent combined with his poorly tailored double-breasted enormous-lapeled suit has my head spinning.
The right honourable gentleman is quite a piece of work.
He’s a Grade A Tosspot.
He’s currently reclining diagonally along the front bench as if on a chaise longue.
Good candidate for Upper Class Twit of the Year.
Decade (1860s).
among other famous sofas.
Boris seems to have gotten owned.
The Speaker of the House of Commons just bellowed at some MP to “BE A GOOD BOY” this is amazing.
no KK tonight
The kid sounds great please give him all of Vince’s innings
Between the make up game and the real one.
Has anyone bought postseason tix yet? I tried the other day and found the list of options confusing. The mlb ticket interface sucks.
Specifically, what is the “Postsesson Bonus Strip” and how does it differ from purchasing each round separately? These are questions which their ticket site won’t answer, for some reason.
Not yet, and yes it is confusing.
– I thought usually if you had n tickets, you could get n playoff strips, and then the option of another n which would be the Bonus. But I see only the “Bonus Strips” available. One guess is that, since we have the 10-game packages, w/o usual assigned seats, these “Bonus Strips” are our only option for buying for the whole playoffs.
– As someone (you or GM) already pointed out, there is an option for a Tiebreaker, and for later rounds, but not for Wild Card game. Another guess, is that maybe “Tiebreaker” is actually the same as the WC, since it is extremely unlikely that the same team would host both a tiebreaker and the WC game (could only happen in event of multi-way tie, or a tie for the division lead, which is unlikely for us).
– I note the strip price for the seat I looked at is the same as the sum of the LDS+LCS+WS price. So another guess is that maybe the strips only include that round, and NOT the WC game? Either that, or it does include the WC game and is slightly cheaper.
– Yes, it would be better if this stuff were documented, and we didn’t have to speculate. Maybe Liam Hendriks can help figure it out.
– Last year I bought the playoff strip when I first signed up for this season’s package, only to find out later that the seats I got were lousy and expensive, and there were later offers for better, cheaper seats for individual games. (Not that it ended up mattering.) At least it looks like that won’t be the case this year, as they all have options to choose your seats.
– One other thing is that (like last year) being the WC seed means LDS and LCS home games would all be on weekdays, and those can often be at awkward times. (WS is the opposite, with higher seed getting games 1-2,6-7 on weekdays, and lower seed getting games 3-5 on F,Sa,Su).
Ticket Services responds that:
The post season bonus strip and bonus tiebreaker are for an additional strips you were looking to purchase outside of your membership post season tickets. For the season rate and the pay as we play option you will want to click on the round by round series starting with the tiebreaker through the world series. The bonus strips are pay in full.
Which makes sense, though not remotely explained when you’re trying to buy.
More info from Ticket Services:
“The Wildcard game is included in the Division Series. Since you bought the ALDS then you have the Wildcard game already set.”
How odd to sell it this way. Odder still to not explain that anywhere.
That was not among the possibilities I considered. Naturally, I bought Tiebreaker (thinking that might really be the WC) and ALCS, but not ALDS. Oh well.
Also concerning to me in that when we bought ours we did it over the phone, and explained that according to the MLB schedule we would not be here for the WC game so the salesman said no problem, we’ll just start it with the ALDS. Now this is making me think even he didn’t know that was going to be the case. I guess we may end up with a pair of WC tickets we’ll have to get rid of.
If that’s the case, I could probably take those off your hands.
Sounds good, we’ll see how it all goes down. If they’re in the game we’ll be watching from Halifax late into the night.
Yeah my working theory was that they treated the tiebreaker as either/or, since it’s unlikely you’d host both a tiebreaker and a wild card.
I am still really befuddled as to why they don’t explsin any of this when you’re buying the tickets.
Can confirm still no WC games available to buy. So strange.
Probably all the internal optimism that we’ll take the division.
Is this racist? or just awful?
Both. What were they thinking? Honestly, while I do actually believe it to be racist, I’m mostly insulted in how awful it is.
In the “it could be worse” department – the Mets just lost after having a 10-4 lead in the ninth, capped by a 3 run Kurt Suzuki home run.
did they move the fences in?
