1. Certain of success (e.g., in British Parliament, a petition to be discussed, put that in the bag by the Speaker, with certainty it will be worked on that day.)
2. Pre-arranged; fixed (e.g. “Bet to rent; it’s in the bag”
3. (Half): Drunk
#1 of 3 vs the Yankees secured as Homer whoo hoo’ed an eclectic array of stuff past the perplexed Yankee batsmen. Two more nights vs the vaunted Gothemites to follow.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Good game, Yanks fans made a lot of noise early with the HR but the A’s came back quickly in the bottom of the 1st and that really quieted down the Yanks fans
The Yanks fans made all the beer lines really long. I did enjoy watching them head for the turnstiles after the A’s went up 6-1.
Judge costumes are still at least mildly ammusing.
The Marlins men can GTFOH.
But nothing is worse than Yankee fans that buy jerseys with names on the back. Until their franchise can handle that basic concept them must remain without it as well.
While Marlins man is truly ridiculous, I can’t help but somewhat admire his preposterous obsession. I mean, he gets premium seats to watch the best teams across the country. I assume he also flies and stays in comfort. All to represent one of the least appealing franchises and color schemes in American history. There’s something about the insane, obsessed, Quixotic devotion that I can’t help but appreciate.
Also, he has beef with god’s puppy.
Large orange man flaunting wealth.
For “players weekend” they should all just have their numbers spelled out on the back.
Very good win. Homer still has some good stuff sometimes. Mark Canha has turned himself into one hell of an all-around baseball player at age 30. The KD situation is sad.
The sudden entrance into the news cycle of Madam Prime Minister of Denmark reminds me that I haven’t finished the first season of Borgen yet despite loving the first couple of episodes.
Finally coming to Netflix, along with a fourth season.
We’re finally playing the Yankees, which means national publications are finally noticing that we’re competitive yet again. Here’s the Wall Street Journal’s take:
(Pay no attention to the wangs and schlitters in the bullpen)
Here’s The Athletic’s entry into the genre, from fun national baseball guy Andy McCullough:
it also has lemonade though.
Thanks, and go As.
Pedantic man says this decade started in 2011.
Other pedantic man says any period of 10 years can be a decade.
I am humbled to stand before my superior in pedantry.
I’d agree with you if he’d said “three titles in a decade” but he says “this decade”, and in the absence of specification “this” has to be interpreted as the twenty-teens.
Also re structural disadvantages, that Mariners-Rays series drew 24,434 total attendance for the three dates at the Trop. I do not recall which cola is served at the concession stands.
The story of the corruption that led to Trump saying whatever he is saying here is going to be a good one.
Any earlier regime you’d expect some fiendishly elaborate web of shell companies and straw men to mask the dirty profits. Here it’s more likely large amounts of J&J stock were just bought yesterday by someone named “Tonald Drump Jr.”
Rays desperately clinging to a one-run ninth inning lead after old friend Emilio gave up a leadoff bomb to Vogelbach, an HBP, and now a single.
Oh, Emilio…two-run Mallex Smith triple, and the M’s lead.
And Generic Mariners Reliever gives up a leadoff jack to tie it up.
GMR didn’t even get an out. Homer, single, single, IBB, extremely wild pitch.
The O’s and Tigers both have wild card elimination numbers of 3 – what’s the earliest a team has been eliminated in the 2-WC era?
The 2018 Orioles, with their loss and an A’s win on August 20 with 37 games to play. The Royals’ elimination number is 1 there as well.
The 2013 Astros (51-111) were still alive with 37 games to play, as were the 2012 Astros (55-107 in the NL). Those Astros teams are the only two others with enough losses to be candidates.
A couple other elimination dates of notably bad teams:
2003 Tigers (43-119, one wild card): August 18 with 39 to play.
1962 Mets (40-120, single 10-team league): August 7 with 51 to play. That one doesn’t work out by “magic number”, but their 82nd loss with no interleague play means somebody has to finish over .500.
Found a podcast even AV won’t listen to!
honest spit take.
then… subscribed.
i just gotta. and they’re under 15 mins.
I underestimated your commitment to the form.
i have a revolving slot for comedy quickies. as soon as the schtick gets worn, i get a new one.
this one may be a very quickie.
I was subscribed and variously listening to about 90 before I got married and have significantly had to reduce, but I also feel like there has been an overall decline in quality in the ones I do listen too in the last year.
the field is flooded.
but there are still some really greats.
oh, but i forgot. it’s gonna be a revolution soon. as soon as conan releases his first episode.
look, he’s already on the cover of variety it’s so good.
the rage from podcast-twitter in the replies is pretty amusing.
i’m never gonna get out of this podhole i’m digging.
Oh my god.
You might want to see a doctor.
We’ll see if the fact that the Yankees are throwing a lefty tonight prevents that 6-7-8 of Piscotty, Khris, Profar from being a swirling vortex.
early returns are good
My fear for this game is that Fiers pitches 8 shut out innings reminding me that he was left off the Wild Card roster, My fear for this game is also that the A’s get blown out.
Joseph doesn’t come near that one
Khrushed!
(with an assist from the ump for not calling ball 4)
Oppo field KD homer was pretty far down my list of probable outcomes.
He’s a fucking Savage in the box!
I really hate the Yankees pantomiming hitting the roof of the dugout with a bat for their I got a base hit” sign
That is some very meatheaded nonsense.
I have never been a fan of those, but whatever, let the kids play. That is antagonistic.
I have never been a fan of those, but whatever, let the kids play. That is antagonistic.
I loved the Boone sound clip part of it though, and Boone also scored points with me when he was sitting at the ESPN Baseball Tonight desk the night Angel Hernandez messed up the Rosales home run replay in Cleveland and went on quite a rant about it.
KD!!!!
Ok I’m taking KD swinging at a 3-0 ball four, getting fked by the ump on a 3-1 non strike, and then homering on the full count, as a definitive sign that he’s back.
That was nice. Not gonna lie
God, I love Marcus.
Took them 8 batters to figure out it was JA Happ and not luis severino. That must be why they don’t go with names on the back, to confuse the opposition
Semien turning into prime Cal Ripken Jr. is such a wonderful development.
Lets get like 10 more of these, ok?
Man was I on the wrong side of the Semien vs. Russell “debate” (even excluding what a piece of shit the latter is off the field).
Wasn’t everyone?
Quick & dirty bit of research shows that Rickey hit 28 HR in 1990 and all were in the #1 spot in the batting order. Semien has hit 20 of his 22 this season in the #1 spot.
Campy had that bizarre season when he hit 22 HR in 1970, all in the #1 spot. Am I forgetting somebody? I’d think those would be the top 3.
I forgot at least one. BTW 1990 was Rickey’s only >20 HR season as an Athletic.
Rickey 28/28 (1990)
Campy 22/22 (1970)
Coco 22/22 (2013)
Semien 20/22 (2019)
We need a long inning (and runs) from Happ next inning. I have tickets tomorrow and I want to have a depleted yankee bullpen
And you need a Fiers CG so that Puk doesn’t pitch tonight?
correct
em on tv
boone should be penalized for not getting green up early enough.
this is fucking ridiculous
Frustrating not to break the game open, but getting one eases the pain.
bouncing ball up the middle? where is my shift?
Diekman in with runners on, ugh.
I would have told Tauchman not to swing under any circumstances for the entire AB.
The crash of the Interwebs with Diekman coming in with the bases loaded was maybe just as well. I’m glad to see upon getting back up and running there was only one run of damage…and now even that has been recouped.
Seems to me Neuse would be more useful than Profar.
He’s playing a lot of second. Barreto has moved to 3rd.
Murphy hit another one later in the game but admittedly it was against a position player.
I don’t know who half these Yankees are. Mike Ford??
I dislike all of them.
Happ wouldn’t be one of those, but it’s fun to check something on Twitter, see that “Happ” is in the “Worldwide Trends” and look at all the complaining.
This isn’t going to be a Puk night, is it.
thank god
I spoke too soon! He’s warming up.
Sorry Ed
My softball team was unanimously elated about Puk’s appearance.
I am not liking this
Bob has a tough job this year…
He did it well tonight. I’m glad he got Puk’s feet wet. Now he can feast on the Giants and Royals and be ready for Yankee Stadium.
More A’s runs please
Treinen =/= Yankee killer.
I’m nervous
Gameday is classifying Puk’s 98-99 MPH pitches as sliders.
His stuff is alarming.
I was about to say he just needs to throw more strikes, no one can do anything with that pitch anyway, before Ford hit a liner into right.
Phegley said after the game that he basically just called fastballs because he didn’t know how good Puk’s slider is.
Uh. Who on earth stupidly didn’t bother giving him a scouting report on his own damn pitcher that he’s catching?
or why didn’t he, you know, ASK THE PITCHER HE’S CATCHING
Thanks, and go As.
Well, there’s a difference there. Knowing he *HAS* a slider didn’t seem to be the problem. It was how *GOOD* it was. Having the pitcher tell you he’s got a great slider isn’t the same as a coach giving him a scouting report that says he has a great slider.
Heck, I knew about his slider.
BTW-Dont ask him to throw a changeup. It is making his arm feel funny.
Dammit chad
reverse splits!
That running fastball at 100 mph boring in on the hands of righties looks like it will be a problem.
Bob going to hendriks was right. I just hope it works
FK yeah Hendriks!
Hendriks hitting 100?
long toss and pokemon. You bet
I would appreciate 2 or 3 more A’s runs.
Puk is going to have some fun K’s, and some BIG HRs if someone runs into it right.
Hendriks was on fire tonight.
happy with the last two being shot ABs, but that means I get Soria tomorrow
And probably 2 innings of Lou.
Diekman, check, Lou, check, soria, check. No puk.
What a worthless game to go to
That’s why you don’t put him in the night before with a four-run lead.
Hopefully by this time on September 6, the record will show that we are currently in the first wild card spot.
Chrinos attempting to complete the cycle but instead recording the last out of a 1-run game at 3rd was spectacularly stupid.
The Merc News has copies of invoices where Scott McKibben billed Ring Central for a $50,000 “finders fee” for his services in pushing their ultra-sketchy naming-rights deal through.
I guess that would explain his resignation.
Yeah, this seems way beyond the pale, even by sleazy joint powers authority standards.
Fits nicely with the thread title though
Since the pale separated the English occupiers from the Irish natives, as a descriptor of unacceptable behavior the phrase should really be “within the pale”.
How stupid do you have to be to leave that kind of paper trail?
Pretty stupid, Ray
If the A’s succeed in buying the county’s half of the property, there is no longer any need for the JPA and its $300,000 jobs to exist, right?
Even if that deal doesn’t happen the JPA is superfluous, since the City and the County each have to ratify all of its major decisions anyway.
In other bizarre Coliseum naming sponsor news
This helps explain why they replaced the sauerkraut with borscht.
Naming rights and sponsorship deals turn out to be rife with opportunities for corruption of all kinds.
The lesson here is that the profit potential for graft is orders of magnitude more lucrative in the private sector than the public.
Charges filed
You know you’re an extra dumb public official if your schemes were so blatant as to warrant charges from Nancy O’Malley’s shop.
The risk/reward is also really bad.
Best case scenario is this is just a waste of money
The Royals lost their travel day between Baltimore and Cleveland today to finish a suspended game at Fenway that had been stopped with it tied heading into the 10th inning. The Red Sox walked them off in 12 minutes.
My wife and I were speculating last night about exactly this outcome, but neither of us made the effort to look up the Royals travel schedule.
A question he had to answer because he’s apparently now in a DH platoon with Jurickson Effing Profar (.175/.245/.368 vs. RHP).
The MLB app has KD in the lineup, as does the A’s twitter feed as of an hour ago. There’s something weird going on.
hey suslu? Can you ask if he is OK?
Whatever storm is pelting the eastern seaboard right now has really interfered with my pregame scoreboard watching.
Roxy is doing the television PxP tonight.
Row Ark!
I don’t listen to the television audio that often, and every time I do the sound mix drives me nuts. Way too much of the drummers…much more of that than you get when you’re in the ballpark. They aren’t nearly that noticeable on radio either.
(reply fail, oh well)
How do you feel about the Stanford logo next to the score graphic?
NO FURD COMMERCIALS ON A’S TELECASTS ARRRRRGGGGGHHHH
And now the parent of a Furdie in the booth, wearing a red shirt. They’re torturing Roxy, that’s what’s happening.
Looks like the A’s were able to sell some Japanese ads behind the plate for Tanaka day.
Speaking of Japanese starting pitchers, you know who has been the worst (qualifying) starting pitcher in the majors this season by WAR?
I’m just glad Chapman’s hand isn’t perforated after that play.
Lew Wolff in the house.
Nothing but excellent at bats thus far.
…obviously posted before Khris.
At least he took that first sinker?
I was thinking, after 2 wins and then putting up 3 in the first, that feels a little too easy. Stomp on their throats with a 5 or a 6, or three hours from now regret that you didn’t.
If Tanaka didn’t have Khris, he would be out of this game by now.
Still
Roxy just sitting around available for years while we listen to Vince and Glen…
I keep thinking of that story that the A’s would only let Roxy fill in for Ken on the road if Roxy paid for his own travel.
And Joe Starkey, whom Roxy should have replaced 15 years ago.
Joe Starkey cannot still be calling Cal football…..can he?
45th season, pretty much entirely because he had 20 great seconds in 1982. He loves Cal football and he’s knowledgeable, but trying to figure out what is actually happening on the field when I only have the radio broadcast is torture. Like Vince, I’m fine with him when I’m syncing him with TV and can see the action.
I can’t decide if I like Olson, or Chapman, or Marcus, or Canha the most.
At least Profar has not made this choice any more difficult.
So many likable productive guys, most since 2012 at least.
How does this team have the best record in the AL?
Orioles
Seriously, they are 17-2 with a 151-83 run differential against BAL.
That being ruled a hit is ridiculous. The ball was heading right into his glove and the out would have been recorded immediately.
Sean Nolin starting against LV tonight. Barreto hit a homer.
Ford running down the foul ball near the bullpen reminded me of Steve Balboni chasing those at the Coliseum. Ford’s result was better than any of Balboni’s.
Hmmmmm, most likely no Hendriks tonight or possibly a less-effective Liam if he does come in.
Totally unrelated to anything: wasnt Coco going to be in the booth for x games this year? Did he bail because he wasnt great at it?
I’m not on radio tonight but Coco was there last night. He wasn’t scheduled for any television.
I wouldn’t mind if he would bail because he seems like a superfluous spare part.
He is in the radio booth tonight.
I don’t think any radio broadcast should have more than two voices. Ken and Vince and that’s it. If it’s Ken and Ray or Vince and Ray, the regular play-by-play guy should do all 9, unless he has to take a crap or something and then Ray can do PxP for a couple outs. John and Suzyn have been working that way for a long time now.
That was the impression I got when I heard him 1-2x. Didnt seem to have much insight.
Cleveland now suffering through the dreaded second long rain delay in a getaway road game that they will most likely lose to complete a sweep.
Lou back?
GM: Lou back. Yankee killer.

6-1 and WC 1!
SWEEEEEEDP! Suck it, richies.
With all the talk of players who might get called up in September I haven’t heard Frankie Montas’ name mentioned lately. When is his suspension over? Any thoughts on what they do with him when it is done?
He’s not eligible to come back until the final week of the season, and is also ineligible for the playoffs, so he could make at most one start or a couple of relief appearances.
I’m penciling him in for game 163 against the ‘stros.
OK thanks, I was pretty sure he wasn’t eligible for post-season but for some reason I thought his return was earlier than the last week.
I’m already over the black and white uniforms.
The black ones are just bad, the white ones are brutal. I guess on a hot sunny day you’d prefer to be wearing the white.
Also, the pitcher’s black cap on top of the white uni, with everyone else wearing white caps, looks absurd.
That’s because otherwise the ball would be invisible?
Players on Team White who came up with clever nicknames are SOL because the lettering is invisible. They used white letters on the black unis, not just outlines, and your cleverness or lack thereof is literally glaring.
It all looks like Spy vs. Spy.
i have seen one highlight. and its unimaginable
What the fuck is up with two friday off days this late in the season?
Two-game series destroy a baseball schedule. These “natural rivalries” like A’s-Giants should always be played four days in a row, and that even applies to the ones like Padres-Mariners that require some travel.
Yep. At least the travel day is fair since both teams will need to do it at the same time. I feel the same way about all the idiotic travel days during the playoffs.
interleague play should be abolished
I’m with you & Bill on that one.
100K announced attendance at the Coliseum for two games.
On a personal note it has given me an excuse to go to some cities like Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Cincinnati in the last few years and why the FK would I ever go to any of those places if the A’s weren’t there.
Then they should do a round robin where everyone plays everyone the exact same number of times
Well, you can look forward to an afternoon at Ring Central for Labor day
Everyone listen to this. this guy is a hero. Without him, My older kid never gets through 3rd grade

This sounds familiar:
Nothing has changed.
She’s an A’s fan. Someone get her an account.
Of the various existential threats Deadspin has faced this might finally be the one that kills it. We’ll see how fast the quality declines.
Sean Manaea has now made five starts for Vegas on top of three starts for Stockton. Yesterday he struck out 12 while walking one and giving up two hits in seven innings.
I mention this to note how silly it is starting to look that he is still on the 60-day injured list. The A’s may technically still be able to keep him on a rehab assignment, but it sure looks like they are gaming the rules to preserve a 40-man spot and an option year until rosters expand.
The option year isn’t really an issue because
a) It only counts if he is optioned for at least 20 days, and we are now only a week away from rosters expanding; and
b) He has used zero option years in the past, and will likely need zero in the future
The 40-man roster spot, yeah, probably. But that also benefits him as well as the team, as he gets a full major league salary while he’s on the 60-day DL, but would get less (I think) if he were optioned.
Interesting. Kind of win-win-win then. The A’s, Manaea, and Tanner Anderson or whoever still gets a roster salary for another two weeks.
Still, it’s kind of against the spirit of the rules.
Is it a Players’ Weekend thing to have all of one Saturday afternoon game across both leagues?
cool that we on off day for players weekend. I don’t want to have to see highlights of more than 2 games.
I wonder why the A’s play at night when they don’t have fireworks and Fox isn’t forcing them out of a time slot. They aren’t getting much of a TV ratings boost on a Saturday night. We went through most of the A’s tenure in Oakland, and the Giants tenure in San Francisco for that matter, always playing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and I liked that tradition.
I feel like Saturdays have been almost 50-50 day/ night over last five years. Sat 6pm starts are popular with the tailgate crowd, at least.
I wanted to note in the Game on Thursday, Brett Gardner is not getting breaks from the umpires. during a stike out in the 8th or something, Handsome Rod Drake called a third strike check swing just after a boarder line strike 2. He gave Handsome rod drake a couple of nasty looks through the day.
Way yo go savage.
Gentrification? Of a parking lot?
I feel like this version of the anti-ballpark crowd is about 50 active anti-housing activists, perhaps funded in part by folks with an interest in Coliseum- area land values.
Last year’s attendance was so bad!
Can the Orioles hold a touchdown lead through four? Let’s find out.
