Somehow Cal spend $500M on Memorial Stadium and we still get the knees in the back just like when we were students. Plus the same old porta potties on the east side. But Tradition!, like not playing in the Rose Bowl.
This feels like another one of those games where the A’s don’t hit until putting together a teAse in the late innings. It doesn’t help that this fking ump is giving Bumgarner everything.
I’ve never been one to talk about batting average but my god, this offense is so one dimensional. Outside of the home run, they’re just bad at hitting.
I’d like to see a path to the place where the A’s aren’t at least 5 games out of the #2 wild card a week from Sunday, but am having a tough time with the routefinding at the moment.
I’m having trouble following the politics of the sale of the Coliseum site. Who’s just being stupid, who is just posturing, who is acting as a stalking horse for some developer/community group/port interests/nimbys/the Giants etc.
Just give it to the A’s for the cost of the outstanding loans and tell them to fuck off on their idiotic Howard Terminal plan. City & County get the money they need to not be in debt, the A’s get the land they need to build a stadium+.
It’s classic Oakland City Council behavior, unwilling to allow a single step of progress occur without taking the opportunity to dip their beaks ensure that the taxpayers are best served.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
It’s the tardiness of their obstruction that is most perplexing. They could have started jamming this up months ago, and instead they are wading in at the last minute.
It sucks that we’re going to get Bumgarner twice in our 4 games against the Giants. They are pretty awful.
Samardzija is their only other SP who isn’t terrible.
Stephen Vogt might be their best hitter.
Because Monday is an off day, Bailey’s next start would be Tuesday the 20th. He could then also pitch against the Giants on Sunday the 25th on regular rest, but (with another off day Thursday) that would mean pushing Fiers back an extra day, which I’m not sure is really what we would want to do.
Alternatively, you could use those two off days to skip Bailey completely, and then have him start against the Giants on 9 or 10 days rest. That seems more attractive to me, but they might not want to skip him after his best start for us.
Manaea could potentially be available that same weekend (supposed to make his last rehab start this coming Monday) which complicates things even more.
He pitched like someone who was already thinking about his dinner plans and had no thought of ever coming in. Now we get to burn Petit and Hendriks in a game where Homer Bailey was at just 90 pitches after 7.
This is obviously a positive development but man, I at least have become thoroughly demoralized about the A’s chances of hanging with Houston in any ballgame.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
There’s a chance Cole doesn’t pitch in the series. The Verlander game seems like a likely loss for obvious reasons. I’m not that scared of Greinke but he’s going up against Anderson and the Astros crush lefties. They have to win tomorrow’s game, Fiers against Aaron Sanchez.
A split seems doable, and if you can get 2 of 3 from the Yankees (obviously not easy but the A’s are probably facing Happ, opener, Tanaka who have been meh this year), there’s no way you can come out of it worse than 5 GB of the Rays which isn’t unmanageable.
Of course, you still have 7 games against the Yankees and Astros remaining after that.
Correct, it’s actually 19 of the first 108 games (17.6%). After they are done with the Astros, they still have 10 against the Rangers, 7 against the Angels, 5 against the Mariners, 24 against other AL teams and 8 interleague.
I just watched the episode of All A’s with Mike Fiers where they go to the Pacific Pinball Museum. Not super interesting, but at the end they play Upper Deck an old pitch-and-bat game, leading to this exchange:
Brodie Brazil: Hey, now I can say I hit a home run off of Mike Fiers!
Fiers: Yeah, well, lots of guys can say that.
AJ Puk is slated to pitch tonight in Vegas’ game and signs continue to be that he will be called up soon if his performance/health continues to be strong.
Mevin again suggests that AJ Puk isn’t far away from being an option for the A’s. And again hints that it might be tough for Manaea to crack rotation if everyone is pitching pretty well. As I’ve written, Manaea has options left.
god dammit, put the fucking names on the back of the jerseys.
It’s traditional, like pitchers hitting, bleachers with no backs, and racism.
Somehow Cal spend $500M on Memorial Stadium and we still get the knees in the back just like when we were students. Plus the same old porta potties on the east side. But Tradition!, like not playing in the Rose Bowl.
But hey they’ll be selling beer there this year!
wow, two baserunning blunders and no outs on the bases for pilar
this home plate umpire is terrible, yeah?
19 inch plate for bumgarner
and Smith
Both sides of the plate too. That was egregious.
Amazingly bad.
Doug Eddings, who went into the Angel Hernandez Hall of Shame with this one:

Quality teAse at least.
I don’t know how anyone can’t be in favor of a robot strike zone after that performance.
Prescient.
this is pretty disgusting.
Thanks, and go As.
Donovan Solano?
Joey Rickard?
Who are these people, Farhan?
Aramis Garcia?
Sweet almond bread rocket!
No disrespect to Brett, who has made some good pitches, but this Giants lineup is putrid.
I’m thinking the final hit of Brett’s career came in Wrigley Field last week.
he’ll get a contract next year, don’t you think?
Contract yes, hit no.
has diekman met strikes?
JaBBe DieBBman
Similar to some previous starts, Brett falls apart in a hurry.
What I said about Brett making some good pitches? Not so much now.
three major league hitters
The last 2 missed by *that* much. Game of inches and what have you.
meh, need to score runs to win
Ed’s right. If you told me Brett gave up 2 runs Id say we should score 3 or more if we want to win.

I feel like 3-4 through the 1st 7 games would be a moral victory.
Special guest appearance from #teamdynamite.
I feel comfortable at this point saying that Diekman sucks.
But lets get a few more starts in Vegas for all the kids.
If only more people would swing at his slider that’s nowhere near the strike zone, he could be successful.
He has sucked his entire career! I did not understand why they wanted him.
And we will probably get another inning of Bum now.
We’re due.
I think Bob is done with Profar too. Interesting that he didn’t PH for Pinder against the righty.
I liked that trade, but in the end, he’s another “can’t miss” prospect who missed.
thats what happens if youre hurt all the time.
I was all ready to scornfully wonder why we keep PHing KD in important situations.
Full on TeAsE in progress.

Beau Taylor is the one DFA’d for Joseph. That seems risky with Phegley, Murphy, and Heim all injured in some form.
That’s interesting to me because unless they want to carry 3 catchers on the 25 man, another one will have to be DFA’d to make room for Phegley.
It would not surprise me if they kept Phegley on his rehab assignment for a while, and then carried all 3 after that.
i mean, there is no need for buchter and or wang
I’m going to be annoyed if Puk doesn’t replace one of them during the coming homestand.
Beau joins Bo on the Jays.
are you sure that isn’t just a press release about bichette that is complying with canadian language laws?
You’re on fire today!
Beaux Kneaux la langues.
ASVD,you hoser.
“Three pretty good starts, and two not so good.” So, … pretty good!
Brandon Belt really fell off a cliff, didn’t he. The contract extension they signed him to a couple of years ago looks ugly.
they are going to need to eat a lot of money between now and 2022
I would suspect Beede of intentionaly hitting Chapman there if it wasn’t obvious that he’s just bad.
It sucks that we’re going to get Bumgarner twice in our 4 games against the Giants. They are pretty awful.

Bob should probably make sure the Giants see Bailey again. He appears to own them.

That third strike call to Piscotty was….surprising.
Grossman got a lot of that.
say it ain’t so, taco.
Chance to pick up a game on everybody today.
Why is Soria even in this game?
To give them a chance?
Mission accomplished.
He pitched like someone who was already thinking about his dinner plans and had no thought of ever coming in. Now we get to burn Petit and Hendriks in a game where Homer Bailey was at just 90 pitches after 7.
At this rate we might not even burn Hendriks. Stop the bleeding, Jesus.
Chapman seems to be waking up just in time for the Astros.
This is obviously a positive development but man, I at least have become thoroughly demoralized about the A’s chances of hanging with Houston in any ballgame.

Of course, you still have 7 games against the Yankees and Astros remaining after that.
Next season all 16 games against the Astros will happen before the end of July. I hope they get a lot worse during the offseason.
Wait. WTF. Nothing in August or September against a division opponent?
Correct, it’s actually 19 of the first 108 games (17.6%). After they are done with the Astros, they still have 10 against the Rangers, 7 against the Angels, 5 against the Mariners, 24 against other AL teams and 8 interleague.
So it will be an amazing second half charge.
Unfortunately the Stros have a very soft August/September schedule except for a closing trip to the Bronx and the Atlanta suburbs.
Thanks Chappy
I turned this game off 45 minutes ago at 7-0 in the eighth inning. WTAF.
MIKE! CAN I BORROW YOUR TUCK??
I don’t have a truck anymore, sorry :(
Thanks, and go As.
What?
(OK, minor league deal.)
whut?
Wrong (former) Mets Ace.
Thanks, and go As.
Not even the Coliseum can save that guy.
Harvey is depth in the likely event that they DFA some SPs (Tanner Anderson, Blackburn) for Manaea, Puk, Luzardo.
Makes a lot of sense considering that if you bring one of those guys up to start and they get hurt, you need a AAAA guy
And Harvey would no doubt like to throw some innings to prove he’s healthy enough for someone to bring him in on an NRI in February.
Semien switched agents ro a guy who’s a former A’s minor leaguer, sounds encouraging.
Hard to believe that in 15 years the A’s still haven’t topped the 6 years/ $66M contract they gave Chavez.
Homer bailey is pitching well?
Half the time.
he is pitching pretty, that is for sure
If we play the Giants every 5 games…sure.
