Games 76*-79*: Solstice Shakedown Party 84

It doesn’t feel like the A’s are exactly “hot” (I mean, losing two of three to the Mariners, and then an Orioles series), but they are a respectable 10-6 over the last 16 including that 6-4 on the brutal road trip. We now head into the final 16 before the All-Star Break, trying to figure out if it’s worth shopping for this year’s Jeurys Familia and Fernando Rodney.

It starts with four at the Coliseum vs. the Tampa Bay/Montreal/Portland/Albuquerque Rays. The Rays are apparently so preoccupied trying to get dual US/Canadian citizenship that they haven’t figured out who’s going to pitch for them in Oakland.

Tonight at 7: Frankie Montas vs. Charlie Morton
Friday at 7: Tanner Anderson vs. TBA
Saturday at 1: Mike Fiers vs. TBA
Sunday at 1: Brett Anderson vs. TBA

You’d think you could see a doctor in the morning and still make it to the game in the evening.

Unpopular opinion: I think bunting against the shift isn’t generally a good idea. People always talk about the successes but never notice the failures, which I would guess are more substantial than the successes.

Especially in that instance right there where Olson bunted ball 4.

I think it’s generally a good idea; your final sentence caught why it was dumb on a 3-1 count.

I wonder how much you have to do it successfully before teams come out of the shift.

Ugh, getting real tired of the Treinen experience.

It looks like a huge issue is that he’s barely throwing his slider this year. This leads to deep counts as he’s not putting hitters away. And with his middling control, that usually results in a walk as evidenced by that Lowe at bat.

Sadly premature for possibly the wrong reason with Montas and Treinen and a need for arms to finish the season.

I was taking care of some business in the ticket office yesterday when the guy said something like “time to make our move, we had the same record this time last season.” I haven’t checked it but it seems about right. I could see this team going on a little run to get seriously into contention. If not, then yeah, there are deadline decisions to be made.

He definitely has the ability to do that (e.g most of last year). That’s why it’s so frustrating when he wastes at bats in such a Crosby-esque way. His performance this year has been a huge dropoff from last year.

Never thought that Petit and Hendriks would be our best options to close games out this year.

    • Soaker Soaker Jun 22,2019 4:36 pm || Up

I had a good rant ready to go yesterday morning as a follow-up to my comment above that the A’s aren’t a postseason team this year, and this is at the heart of the point.

For a year and a half the A’s have had what I would call relatively competent starting pitching…but winning a game usually requires 9 outs from the bullpen, and often 10 or 11. Trivino and Treinen have borne an awful lot of the resulting burden, and while neither seems to be literally “broken” in an injury sense, the wear and tear has taken its toll. Trivino showed the effects in the latter part of last season. So today Bob thinks Liam Hendriks is his best option in the 9th inning. Hendriks has had a strong season in the 7th inning and recently 8th inning role, but I don’t think closer is a role he can succeed in for any length of time. Petit and Soria are likely to be rotated into higher-leverage roles as well and I have similar doubts about them.

The way they could build the bullpen back up is to not ask so damned much of them. Show me that you can win games needing 6 or fewer outs from the bullpen, then maybe I’m wrong about postseason chances. I’ve made several positive comments about Montas and his performance on Thursday night is exactly what they need more of. Brett, Fiers and whoever the fifth starter is aren’t going to go more than 6 full very often, but Montas was showing an ability to do that and Bassitt *might* be capable. Manaea could do it as well but they’re going to go easy on him the rest of this year.

Now the Montas rug has been pulled from under them, exactly what they did not need. This notion that the A’s will have a strong second half because that’s their tradition…I’m not expecting it. I’m always delighted to be proven too negative in my thinking, and it happens a lot.
