    Kaprielian will not be working on things right away. I find it funny that he is still called a “prospect” in articles. If he ever throws an MLB pitch at this point it will be an achievement.

    While he hit a paltry .169 for Toros del Este, Mateo did show some improvement as a player. Scouts noticed that he was letting the game come to him, and not rushing to make poor decisions. The 23-year-old showed signs of maturing and proved there is still promise in his overall tool set, headlined by elite speed. He is poised to repeat Triple-A this season.

          While the A’s definitely fked up by wasting a pick on him, he really didn’t handle the situation well himself. It would have taken almot no effort to give the A’s a little warning on the decision, or to acknowledge them in some way in his statement.

              Measuring 5’8 3/4″ and 183lbs will kill him at the combine, but even more so will the fact that (no innuendo) his hands will be small. The NFL ball is different than college, and when everybody points at Brees, Wilson, and Flutie they all had FKing freakishly big hands in comparison to height/weight.

      BA had an article today, defending the decision from the financial standpoint.

      Their main points are:

      1. If he sticks with baseball he is getting the $4.6m now, but that is probably it for the next 5-7 years, until the first arbitration.
      2. If he really is first round talent, even towards the end of it, he will earn more than that just by signing. Lamar Jackson has $7.5m guaranteed.
      3. There is a lucrative market for mediocre quarterbacks,

      Mark Sanchez has earned $74 million. Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles, 26, has already earned $40 million. Chase Daniel has been a nine-year backup. He’s earned $28 million. Matt Cassel started for four-and-a-half seasons in a 14-year career. He’s earned over $60 million.

      4. Quarterbacks are paid over-proportionally well and they have long careers.

      In 2018, seven of the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks are 35 or older. Four are 37 or older. Of the 196 pitchers and hitters who qualified for the ERA or batting title last season, 11 were 35 or older. Only three were 37 or older.

      5. Career earnings of average QBs and MLB Superstars are comparable, Matthew Stafford and Clayton Kershaw having basically identical career earnings.
      6. QB is the only position where NFL is favorable to MLB.

      A few years ago, we looked at comparing Jeff Samardzija, a wide receiver/pitcher who chose baseball, to Calvin Johnson, a wide receiver/outfielder who chose football. At the time we noted that even though Johnson was one of the best in the NFL and Samardzija was simply a solid MLB pitcher, Samardzija was likely to out-earn Johnson.

      • DFA DFA Feb 14,2019 11:24 am || Up

        Mathew Stafford is a bad example because he was the #1 pick in under a previous CBA that didn’t have slot numbers or the 5th year option for first round picks. Further, because his initial contract was higher, he also qualified for higher franchise tag numbers.

    27. Luzardo (“mid-rotation upside…abnormally polished”)

      All three were rated 55 Future Value (on a 20-80 scale), which was the rating given to 19-45 on the top 100 list. By this list it seems like the A’s have an above average system, but without one top end talent.

      It isnt my money, and $2M isnt that much baseball wise, but Grossman seems odd to me. It cant be a positive vote for the likes of Fowler and Martini.

      • andeux andeux Feb 13,2019 1:51 pm || Up

        The weird part is that Grossman is a RHH with big platoon splits, so he’s really competing for playing time with Canha and Pinder. I would prefer to have another LHH option other than Martini (who had good numbers, but seemed like he might be a fluke) and Fowler (who was terrible).
        (Edit: I guess Grossman is actually a switch hitter, but he has hit much better as a RHH, so the comment still stands.)

          I hadnt even gone to the splits which is why I assumed it had to be Fowler and Martini since they are the 2 who seem likely to get ditched. I also thought I read that he can play all 3 positions but have since heard really just corner and-more importantly- with bad D and a mediocre bat- who cares what he can play?

          The founders of Salem Communications support various religious causes. In 2005 [founder Stuart] Epperson was reported in Time magazine as one of the “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America”. In 2004 he co-chaired “Americans of Faith”, a religiously based Republican electoral campaign. Both founders have served on the Council for National Policy. They gave $100,000 to the Bush presidential reelection campaign and $780,000 to the 2000 “California Defense of Marriage Act” (Proposition 22) ballot measure.

    Elevated levels of chemicals that remain in the site’s soil and groundwater, such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, are known to cause cancer. Volatile organic compounds, also at the site but in much lower concentrations, have been linked to birth defects and can damage the central nervous system.

    Apparently the site

    was previously home to oil tanks, a manufactured gas plant, a briquette plant where compressed charcoal blocks were made, a coal tramway, an asphalt paving plant and a blacksmith.

      I did this on the way back from Japan. My return ticket was Narita -> San Francisco -> Chicago (where I lived at the time), but then a work meeting was scheduled in Pasadena. The subtle airline-friendly assumptions in this article are amusing.

      The switch, which sounds innocuous enough, cost Lufthansa around €2,112 (around £1,864 or $2,385), the amount the airline is now seeking to reclaim from the customer.

      no it didn’t

      Gaming the system within the US may cost airlines a few hundred dollars,based on the company’s ability to re-sell the seat that wasn’t used

      nope

          I’m familiar with KHTK. Going up 50 the signal craps out between Placerville and Pollock Pines. The red line shown on the Radio Locator page agrees with my experience.

          Many years ago, before I lived at Tahoe but when I would visit in the summer, the A’s were on a local South Lake Tahoe station. That ended maybe 2004 or so. They were on a Reno station for one season a few years ago, but that station could only be heard in the immediate Truckee Meadows area (Reno and Sparks). That’s been their only radio exposure east of the Sierra for a long time. I have used SiriusXM and MLB.com for the last 10 years.

          The MLBPA would serve the majority of its members better with a bargaining position that the league minimum be increased 2-3x, eliminate arbitration, move directly to free agency after 3-4 years of service.

          I don’t begrudge players getting as much of the revenue as they can… better then than the owners… but the current system doesn’t benefit most of their membership.

            I prefer my idea of eliminating free agency altogether, negotiating a % of the various profit makers, putting that into a pool that gets divided among the teams based on performance (wins, accomplishments, etc.), then again among the players however they see fit (WAR, time in league, time on roster, etc.). Basically, take the owners and GMs completely out of the money equation and just focus on winning. A good player, as a rookie, could make millions immediately. And a past his prime player won’t linger around making millions for doing nothing. There would be a lot of nuts and bolts to work out to keep players from languishing on shitty teams or being blocked by other players, but it would help create parity and keep fans invested in players.

      The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is recognised by the International Olympic Committee and as such abides by World Anti-Doping Agency rules.

      The backstory is that 15 or 20 years ago the WBF (and I think also FIDE) decided that they should get Olympic recognition as “mind sports” (because NBC is surely dying to put bridge on in prime time). This predictably failed, with the unintentional consequence of putting them under the control of all sorts of rules that don’t really make sense. So at the same time a top player is getting suspended for failing a completely pointless drug test, some other players who were kicked out for cheating got readmitted after appealing to the “Court of Arbitration for Sport” (which is apparently a thing), which essentially didn’t understand the case against them.

She is a citizen of another country and an employee of a foreign company, so she cannot be bound by a third country’s (US) trade policies, can she? Is it because Huawei has offices in US?

    So, by analogy, if Croatia imposes trade sanctions against Slovenia, and Amazon keeps selling there, then they could have Jeff Bezos extradited once he leaves US?

      “Huawei used a Hong Kong company, Skycom Tech, to make transactions in Iran and do business with telecom companies there, in violation of American sanctions. Banks in the United States cleared financial transactions for Huawei, inadvertently doing business with Skycom, he said.”

      but really? …it’s about 5G.

        Yeah, I am aware of the technology aspects and related issues when it comes to 5G. I am interested in legal grounds for such an arrest. So is it because US banks were involved? I mean we are talking about US laws, they can not be applicable outside of the US borders

        • dmoas Mar 5,2019 9:23 am || Up

          Best guess is the Iran Sanctions aren’t technically why she’s being arrested but are part of the fraud. She frauded U.S. banks into circumventing the Iran Sanctions. So basically got U.S. banks to violate the sanctions, not herself doing it. She’s being arrested for her part of committing fraud in the U.S. It sounds like an international mess though. But I’m not a lawyer, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn.

        • AV AV Mar 5,2019 10:01 am || Up

          can’t they be applicable? honest question.

          maybe borders aren’t physical in some crimes?

          chapo was convicted of conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds. he wasn’t here when he conspired, but US players were involved. maybe that’s analogous?

          or the 12 russian officers mueller indicted.

            Well perhaps generally yes, if it has a “US Branch of the crime” in it. But if not, it would be ridiculous. As I said, if a country A imposes sanctions on a Country B, any further Country N is not bound by this.
