    Signing up with a radio station(s) would be a good goal over the next few weeks as well.

      This pisses me off every time I think of it. Death of terrestrial radio yeah sure blah blah blah but WTF am I supposed to do when driving, or camping, or any other place an internet signal isn’t reliable?

        I refuse to believe that people as smart as Kaval and his team do not understand the necessity of readily available OTA radio broadcasts for a major league baseball team. It is just so incredibly obvious that whatever may happen to the radio business down the road, you need it now both from a marketing standpoint and to avoid a massive backlash from the current fanbase.

          You don’t ditch or minimize it until fans actually do it. You can give then an alternative to lead them away from it, but don’t force them out.

          Not that this addresses FSU’s complaint, but there was a question about free in-market streaming outside of MLB.com’s Gameday Audio, and I had forgotten that KNBR and the Giants already have it. So MLBAM does appear willing to relinquish some of those exclusive rights. It would help the A’s a lot if they wind up on a couple of hamster-powered stations in the Bay Area.

      This is amazing.

      PATRICK: Uh, okay. So you’re gonna have a Pro Day? When do you report for the Oakland A’s?

      MURRAY: February 15.

      PATRICK: Ooh, you knew that. Okay. So you’re ready to go to do that.

      MURRAY: [silent]

      PATRICK: Wait, are you going to spring training?

      MURRAY: [Laughs] I don’t know.

      On that subject, the Super Bowl “radio row” interviews are the most shameless thing in sports media. I caught a few minutes of the KNBR morning show the other day, and after asking Jeff Garcia one or two football questions they spent five minutes talking about some marijuana-based sports drink he was repping.

    There’s a super fun race card at Santa Anita tomorrow. Mandatory payout day for the 20-cent Pick-6 pool, expected to exceed $10 million. Rain forecast so I figure a ticket of some longshots and faves for maybe $5 gives me better odds than the lottery, the illusion of control, and way more entertainment value. Card has two graded stakes including a Kentucky Derby prep. Good times.

    The A’s won’t be back to Dodger Stadium until at least 2021, which is too bad because you know what the organist there would play when this guy is trotting in from the bullpen.

    • Soaker Soaker Feb 6,2019 11:38 am || Up

      So it sounds like this plan is deceased. Soaker’s wild guess, always-wrong odds currently read 60% Levi’s Stadium, 20% the Coliseum, 20% outside the Bay Area.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Feb 6,2019 11:59 am || Up

        I think outside bay area is 0% since Goodell nixed San Diego. Unless they’re willing to reconsider Sam Boyd.

        I also love the hilarious self-own Mark Davis has administered, since they can’t sell season tix and accrue the interest on funds which are usually due by now.

            No. I was willing to accept them leaving, since I know Oakland wasn’t going to pay to build for them. But I’m not willing to also accept deliberately sucking during the lame duck years.

            "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
            • Soaker Soaker Feb 6,2019 1:29 pm || Up

              They’re not going to sell many season tickets at either Levi’s or the Coliseum. The home schedule doesn’t have any out-of-division headline teams either, so they would need a good start to the season to put any butts in those seats via single-game sales.

              Kansas City 12-4
              LA Chargers 12-4
              Tennessee 9-7
              Cincinnati 6-10
              Denver 6-10
              Detroit 6-10
              Jacksonville 5-11
              (Chicago 12-4 is in London)

              If they play in San Antonio, Boise or wherever they could probably at least sell some 3-game mini plans on the novelty factor.

              • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Feb 6,2019 1:35 pm || Up

                The correct thing to do would be to play in Levi’s even if it is half empty. It’s one year. Let the players have NFL facilities.

                Barring that, Estadio Azteca.

                • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Feb 6,2019 2:34 pm || Up

                  Half-empty stands have never stopped the NFL from playing at Levi’s before.

          There are probably several possibilities outside the Bay Area which rate a 2% each, worth exploring over the next couple weeks. An outside-the-box one that occurs to me would be Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City (capacity around 45K), which would be weekend-driveable from Las Vegas. The City of Reno would love the economic boost in the slow fall season but it’s tough to imagine the bare-bones Mackay Stadium (~30K) being considered acceptable to the NFL.

          I assume since Oakland is suing over the Raiders’ departure, the Coliseum can’t slam the door in Mark’s face if he decides that’s his least-bad option, although they would probably love to do exactly that.

          Well, it doesn’t really help the cause of trying to show off utilizing the whole field if the batter rotates to pull it into the opposite field.

    I wrote my first fictional short story the other day, inspired by the First Line Literary Journal contest. It’s not good, and I’m not saying this as a typical Swabian housewife offering her cookies with the tea and demanding a vehement denial. But, it’s good in a sense that I wanted to write one and finally did, and if you have some time and want give me some pointers what could make it better, or just tell me if I wrote my twist so that people understand it, please do.

      I finally got the chance to read this and liked it a lot. Your narrative voice is strong; I felt what “Jašar” felt, not just what he said. That’s not easy. The detail gives great texture throughout, and the twist made sense.

      Only suggestion I have is to tighten up some sentences a bit. Not at the cost of substance, but to be more direct and thus impactful. For example:

      In stark contrast to the modest abode stood the black government issued Volkswagen Phaeton parked in front of it, with its 12-cylinder and 6-liter motor announcing not only its own power wherever it went, but also of the man in it, the man who many believed would be the next Austrian Chancellor.

      Could be:

      In stark contrast stood the black government issued Volkswagen Phaeton in front, with its 12-cylinder 6-liter motor announcing not only its power but that of the man in it, the man who many believed would be the next Austrian Chancellor.

    Youtube TV just became available in our local market a couple weeks ago. The inclement weather this weekend gave me a good opportunity to use the free trial on golf and the Super Bowl. I haven’t actually tried the DVR feature yet, but for the programming I watch, just not seeing any significant difference between Youtube TV at $40/month and DirecTV which I believe goes up to $129/month in a few weeks. These streaming services are going to raise their prices pretty fast as they become more popular, I’m under no illusions about that, but I think DirecTV is toast.

      I don’t know how fast they are going to be able to raise their prices. The streaming TV market is pretty competitive, for now at least.

    • dmoas Feb 4,2019 12:00 pm || Up

      Call Direct TV, tell them you’re cancelling. Then, when they’re trying to entice you, tell them short of getting it down to $20/month, it’s just not worth it to me. See what happens.

      • Soaker Soaker Feb 7,2019 8:49 am || Up

        I called this morning. I’ve had DirecTV since 2009; figure 120 months at maybe an average of $80/month considering the various discounts, so I’ve given them around $10,000 over the 10 years. I assumed I’d get transferred to “Retention” and be offered all sorts of goodies to stay.

        The guy offered me a $20/month “loyalty discount” for 12 months. Uh, the difference between $40 and $129 is $89, so, no. At that point he said, “OK, give me a few minutes here and let me process the cancellation.” Maybe when you say “Youtube TV” they’re instructed to say “FK it, this one’s a goner.” I was really surprised. When I cancelled Ooma a while back they were throwing a ton of free stuff at me to try to keep me (they didn’t).

        When I was in Florida my dad pointed out that he owned some AT&T stock for the dividend, which was unusually high. Suspiciously high, I commented, like that dividend might be cut pretty soon. I’m certainly going to pass this experience on to him and let him know it might not be a bad idea to sell that one.

        • dmoas Feb 7,2019 11:12 am || Up

          Area competition might have something to do with it too. But yeah, you’re better off bailing. A coworker got a sweetheart dial to stay, but if they’re not willing to do that for you, it’s obviously worth it to go.

    27. Oakland Athletics
    2018 rank: 14

    They might be a spot higher if I were confident Kyler Murray planned to play baseball, but he’s not their No. 1 prospect anyway and for all the talk about his decision, he is a long way from the majors. Their bigger concern has to be the nonperformance of so many important position-player prospects last year — their top two picks from 2017, the two main hitting prospects they acquired in trades that same summer — and the injuries to nearly all of their top pitching prospects, with two of them, Daulton Jefferies and James Kaprielian, struggling to get back to full strength after Tommy John surgeries.

    • dmoas Feb 4,2019 3:24 pm || Up

      Haven’t been paying much attention, but that criticism seems fair. It feels like we’re not trading or drafting well of late. And making a lot of questionable decisions. It makes me wonder if they bailed this off season on starting pitching more because they realized they caught lightning a bottle than hit on something special.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Feb 4,2019 5:09 pm || Up

        The Sonny trade looks pretty bad. Otherwise, I’m fairly happy with the trades in the last couple of years.

        I don’t feel like the drafting has been *that* bad either, but that 2017 class looks real shaky for a team that was picking near the top.

        I think the reason they have bailed on starting pitching is that they are miserably cheap and what’s available at their price point sucks.

              You’re both right, but I also think I see in Braden enough glimpses of self-awareness that he could get better about this.

        Nailed it:

        Townsend will work for the A’s full-time this season (video below) in a variety of roles including some radio play-by-play as a backup for Ken Korach and Vince Cotroneo, and will continue to handle pregame and postgame duties for the team.

        (Steve Berman in the Athletic)

        Also:

        I’ve asked the A’s for comment on their terrestrial radio plans, but have not yet received a response.

      How about no. And counter with cutting commercial time for local broadcasts.

      • Soaker Soaker Feb 6,2019 6:08 pm || Up

        I’m seeing the split screen with live action on 25% and a commercial (with the audio) on 50% more and more (the rest graphics), and I bet we start seeing it on baseball this year. The NFL did some of it last season (admittedly not during live action) and PGA golf is doing full 2-minute commercial breaks that way. Baseball could shorten the 2-minute between-innings breaks to 90 seconds and put that other 30 seconds after the first out in the inning. Yeah, the home run on the first pitch of the next batter while the commercial is still running is going to happen once in a while and the play-by-play guy is going to have to amp it up immediately when the 30 seconds is over, but that can be learned. NASCAR started doing the split-screen commercials a few years ago and occasionally there is a crash on the soundless 25% screen while the commercial is still running.

        • dmoas Feb 6,2019 11:37 pm || Up

          There are so many breaks within the game for ad synergy that can be used that even that’s unnecessary.

              We need a Murray news blackout until the end of the combine (March 4). Nothing will be decided until then. At that point it’s one or the other, because no NFL team is going to waste a draft choice if he continues to play baseball off against football.

    In addition to the lack of a radio deal, at this time MLB and Comcast haven’t reached an agreement to continue the in-market streaming via the NBC Sports app.

    Some Comcast teams do carry a decent number of spring training games. The A’s usually only do one game from Arizona, the Giants maybe a half-dozen, so locally, if this were to remain unresolved, the Bay Bridge Series would be the first time this would have any impact.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Feb 10,2019 10:35 am || Up

      Those six goals could make a big difference at the end. Man City is now +10 on Liverpool.

      Liverpool’s next two fixtures are Bayern and at Old Trafford. Will be interesting to see how they manage it. After that, their domestic run out is pretty favorable, with the visit from Spurs the highlight.

      Man City has an eerily similar schedule, also circling a visit to Man U and a visit from Spurs. Liverpool has the game in hand, is out of the FA Cup, and is less likely to have to worry about the Champions League after this month. They might just hold on.

      Spurs will need to win both of those big road games and get help.

      • ptbnl Feb 10,2019 11:47 am || Up

        Yeah, though City had a big advantage in goal difference earlier in the season too which Liverpool recovered.

        The lazy narrative around the last 5 games (“Liverpool blow 7-point lead”) is driving me nuts. They’ve dropped 4 points (2 draws) to City’s 3 (1 loss) which has cost them 1 point, but they’ve also gone from having played a game more to a game less, which is the other 6.

        If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
