Cold Stove Grill 178

I’m starting to get desperate for news that the contending A’s have acquired somebody. Maybe a fresh thread will make it happen.

Talk about whatever.

      Chirinos got 1/$5.75.

      If that’s the market for mediocre starting catchers, Lucroy shouldn’t be expecting more than one year either.

    How much money would we want AZ to eat, and who would we offer to get him?

      We’re reportedly on his no-trade list, along with half the league.

      It’s kind of a weird list:

      Orioles, Red Sox, Reds, Rockies, Tigers, Yankees, Athletics, Padres, Giants, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Angels, Dodgers, Twins and Phillies.

        He does not want to pay California income tax. Or pitch in the AL East unless it’s Tampa Bay (huh?).

            Yeah, that’s making sense, especially considering that the Rangers, Astros and Mariners aren’t on there. Or the Marlins.

              i assume there are ways to minimize that.

              He would make $17M a year in California, what kind of hit would he take?

                With a marginal tax rate of 12.3% (on incomes >$1 million or so) that’s about a million dollars just for home games. The Giants, Dodgers and Padres also play about 1/4 of their road schedule within the state, so another $250K. There probably are some tax reduction strategies for somebody making that kind of money but I don’t have much incentive to investigate that.

                Income tax doesn’t explain the entire list, for example Yankees but not Mets, but to me it suggests his first concern is the money, and pitching for a club that can compete for a championship is a ways down the priority list.

    I’m starting to believe Beaneforst may 9n fact plan to go into 2019 with no starting pitchers at all, just 2-3 inning guys all bullpenning.

      I don’t see lightning in that bottle. But it wouldn’t surprise me if that ended up being their thinking. I really hope not. It’s not horrible for a stretch or in place of a 5th starter. All 5? Yuck.

      • andeux andeux Dec 5,2018 4:09 pm || Up

        Yeah, I’ve heard people suggest that within a few years traditional starting pitchers will mostly not exist anymore, but I’m not convinced that the bullpenning approach can work over a full season. Loads are getting spread out more evenly, and no one has 5 starters each going 200 innings any more, but most teams will still have 3 or 4 throwing 150 innings each.

      Whats…uh interesting I guess(?) about that idea is it could fit with when you have a bunch of starters that may have some limited capacity throughout the season but you definitely dont want to count on for 200+ innings.

      I dont believe you should count on any of them for any innings but until I get my team I wont put that strategy into place.

    Paging Scott Boras

    Murray was asked by Tim Tebow, who is now in the Mets minor league system after being a Heisman trophy winner and first-round pick in the NFL, how he will go about choosing baseball or football.

    “I think that’s something me and my family will talk about at the end of the season and weigh out the options of what the NFL thinks of me,” Murray said on Dec. 1. “Right now my future is already kind of planned out, but we’ll see what happens.”

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 6,2018 12:00 pm || Up

      Scott Boras here. How can I help you?

      Kyler Murray’s representative, Scott Boras, is the most powerful agent in baseball, and Boras told The Chronicle firmly Thursday that the A’s top draft pick will fulfill his commitment to Oakland despite speculation he might elect for the NFL draft instead.

      • dmoas Dec 6,2018 1:27 pm || Up

        It wouldn’t surprise me if he sniffs out the NFL. Since it’s the A’s, I won’t be surprised if he bails too.

        • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 6,2018 1:34 pm || Up

          He’ll play baseball in 2019 for sure. Bailing would be too big a slap to Boras and his uncle who works for Boras.

          But I bet he keeps feelers out to the NFL to see where he would get drafted in 2020. If the baseball thing isn’t going so well, it gives him another option. Hell, if it is going well having NFL options might put extra pressure on the A’s to call him up.

          • MikeV MikeV Dec 6,2018 2:59 pm || Up

            He won’t get drafted in 2020 if he goes to baseball next year.

            He’s also a borderline NFL prospect at best. He’s tiny. He’s listed at 5’10/195 by ESPN, which means he’s probably actually 5’9/185 or so. The odds of him being a high NFL draft pick are impossibly low because he simply doesn’t have the physical attributes that NFL scouts want.

            And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

                OTOH, after the initial signing bonus, MLB can involve 3-5 years in the minors and then another 3 years of pre-arb. NFL players can earn their money sooner.

                  Baseball America has a fairly extensive discussion of this issue, but I think the flaw in their logic is Mike’s point: he’s just not big enough to play quarterback in the NFL. Darren Sproles has had a nice career in pro football and that’s the sort of role Murray would have to accept.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 7,2018 11:41 am || Up

      • lenscrafters Dec 7,2018 1:58 pm || Up

        I’m so tired of the “will he, won’t he” drama. The simple fact of the matter is that a 9th overall selection and a 5 million overslot bonus should be enough to get him to commit to baseball. That the A’s so generously tossed in the one year of football caveat as well and took on all the risk (injury, lost development time, no compensation for the pick whatsoever if he decides to forfeit his baseball commitment) is quite frankly, ridiculous.

        I was uneasy with the pick when it happened not only because of these aforementioned commitment issues, but because Murray, the a baseball prospect, simply isn’t talented enough by most accounts to justify the risk. He’s not a generational Mike Trout or Bo Jackson level talent. He’s not even someone who’s almost assuredly going to make the majors. Most scouting reports had him as a boom/bust guy who’s a end of the first round/beginning of the second type talent. You rationalize it in your head that the A’s have some insider info that his true talent is higher than the consensus (which is fine, that could still be true) and that he is absolutely, assuredly committed to baseball (absolutely not true, as we’re all finding out now).

      Does Ken haul that 1996 model Trinitron monitor around with him everywhere he goes? Or maybe that’s the Giants saying “What, you don’t have a laptop? Well we might have something in the storage closet you can use tonight.”

      If they are truly Rooted in Oakland I think the only way forward, given the vagabond history on terrestrial radio, is buying and operating their own flagship station, filling in the non-A’s hours with syndicated programming and local college football and basketball. It makes sense to drag their feet on that purchase until Howard Terminal is a done deal. A one-year deal in the Bay Area, even on some crappy guinea pig powered station, bridges that gap, plus A’s Access includes MLB At Bat for 2019, and there’s SiriusXM (home games only for Ken and Vince on the satellite service).

            I really hope the A’s are just saying they don’t value Lucroy specifically for more than 1/5. If the plan is actually to bring in any catcher who would bite on a 1 year deal for as cheap as possible, then it’s not a good plan.

            The A’s are in a contention cycle right now and they need to bring in a quality option even if it requires multiple years and money. They shouldn’t sacrifice wins now just because they think they’ll need to make space for a good prospect. Interestingly, they seem to be in agreement on this with regards to 2B – we’ll see if they feel the same about catcher.

            • dmoas Dec 11,2018 1:16 pm || Up

              You can always trade the catcher after the Murphy proves he’s worth it. But their current plans seem a little dubious at best.

        Agreed on this. Especially since they seem gung ho on bullpenning. If you are going to try that you need a number of lower cost arms that you can rotate through and can give you 3-4 innings a couple of times a week.

        • andeux andeux Dec 12,2018 2:27 pm || Up

          I think it would be up to him – he’s a free agent and could sign whatever contract he wants, with any money he earned in the next two years offsetting what he is owed from Toronto. I don’t see any benefit for either side in committing to a second year, so presume he will sign a one-year deal and be free to pick his spot again next year.

        Good for the Rays. Morton specifically was never really an option for the A’s because he wants to be on the east coast, but the A’s should be investing in pitchers of similar quality.

          I fundamentally don’t understand this strategy. Its as if you have a core of good cheap young position players and your strategy is “well we aren’t going to be in on high-end free agents, so let’s make sure to miss all the intriguing cheap arms too!”

            We were probably better off bottom-feeding with Cahill/Jackson/Anderson than with the late-signing mid-tier supposed bargains we wanted last year (Lynn, Cobb, someone else I’m forgetting). But that’s not really proof that it’s a good strategy. And in any case, the thin rotation definitely caught up with us by the end of the year.

          • lenscrafters Dec 13,2018 10:14 am || Up

            I think it’s just the same old story with the A’s: money. The fact is they have to fill 4 or 5 rotation spots. Even at the very conservative estimate of averaging 5 million to fill each spot, that’s still a 20-25 million expenditure on the rotation alone. Couple that with spending needed to add a catcher, 2B, another bullpen arm, and potentially a LF, Fisher is looking at total FA spending spree of at least 30-35 million for 2019 alone. He’s not going to want to do that.

            That would push the overall payroll closer to 100 million which is just not a number I see them hitting especially as revenue sharing goes down even more for next year. So they’ll trot out Beane and Forst, who’ll make platitudes on how they’re happy to be patient and bottom feed, and pursue cheap swingmen types as if the opener strategy is a legitimate strategy for a contender.

            I mentioned in a comment in the WC thread that they’re going to need to do a lot of work to support this core and rebuild the market. And that it means Fisher is going to be ok with taking a short term loss. Things could change soon sure, but all indications are that it’s going to be business as usual. Well, except for the 6th iteration of a pretty set of pictures for a pie in the sky ballpark proposal.

Even if internal scouting is down on him, surely the A’s have a sense of how other teams value him, and could have gotten something (more than the Rule 5 fee) in trade instead. (And OTOH, surely Beane/Forst understand that kind of basic economics, so … I still don’t get it.)

        They are being aggressive while the A’s are not. That’s disappointing. And the seeming cheapness of the A’s (except keeping Rodney, which WTF?) is at least worrying. But the A’s were legitimately a young and great team last year. They aren’t guaranteed to repeat as such, but they are definitely still a top contender, if one tier behind NYY, BOS, HOU.
