There’s The Game, and then there’s The Big Game — fire up The Grill 285

An exciting, or maybe not, Rivalry Saturday of mediocre FKing football is almost upon us.

For some reason the 135th edition of that excuse for drunken debauchery is being played at Fenway Park rather than Harvard Stadium. I didn’t know a betting line existed for that one, but Vegas Insider currently shows Harvard -4.5 with O/U at 56.5.

It’s the 50th anniversary of one of the most famous games in that series, a 29-29 tie which happened when Harvard scored 16 points in the final 42 seconds of the game. There was a documentary made about that game for the 40th anniversary (“Harvard Beats Yale 29-29”), and for beach reading at some point later this winter I have sitting here a new book by George Howe Colt, The Game: Harvard, Yale, and America in 1968.

The Bears haven’t touched The Axe since 2009 and it’s about time they did. Both teams are 6-4. Even a limping Bryce Love is probably better than any skill position player on Cal’s offense. The Cardinal are a 2.5-point favorite with the O/U at a low 45. I could see the final score of this game being 4-2. Nevertheless, I’m putting my 3-0 record in Cal games this season on the line and heading to Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. Go Bears!

Stock up on N95 masks before you come, ours are in short supply. Berkeley Half Marathon canceled for Sunday. I’ve been obsessively monitoring localized air conditions here:

    https://www.purpleair.com/map#10.76/37.8146/-122.2333

And my anecdotal observation is that air is worst pre-dawn (cold air sinks to ground level) and pre-sunset (aka game time)

Ooh, cool site. And the graphs there confirm my anecdotal observations:
      1) Friday was worst.
      2) This morning was a little worse than the last couple of days.

I’ve read mixed things about the efficacy of masks. I tried one briefly Monday evening, when as it turned out the air was not all that bad to begin with. Maybe it helped a bit, but my breath leaking out the top caused my glasses to fog up. Kind of wish I had brought it today though.

my glasses fog when the mask isn’t high enough up my nose. going higher seems to seal over more skin area, so no exhale goes out the top.

Unfortunately I have plenty of local experience with smoky conditions, though not in the last week. I hope the smoke clears some by Saturday, but at times we’ve gone close to two weeks with only brief clearing.

The smoke has stayed west of the Sierra (so far; no promises). All hiking trails are open, but many of the trailheads and campgrounds are behind gates that have been locked for the winter. The only snow is what’s spitting out of the machines overnight. A few of the ski resorts are planning on opening one or two runs this weekend on the manmade stuff.

It has occurred to me that Cal and Stanford have both been mathematically eliminated from the Pac-12 championship game and the schools could postpone the Big Game for two weeks, but they haven’t said anything and of course a lot of alumni have travel plans. It looks like the weekend forecast is “unhealthy for sensitive groups” which should be OK for the game to go on. Cal played a home game last year in similar conditions when Sonoma County was in flames.

My sense is that any one the sensors might show false/misleading data but the aggregate patterns are valid. Per their FAQ sensors are outdoors, usually on sides of structures about 10 feet high.

Did the air suddenly get even more chunky-style today? The East Bay sensors on FSU’s map are mostly showing in the low 300s which seems to be a big spike up. That would be a problem under the Pac-12 guidelines:

If there is substantive evidence that the AQI will remain consistently above 200 for the majority of a competition, that competition should be postponed, cancelled, rescheduled or relocated.

The statement from Cal’s athletic department is:

The AQI can fluctuate as conditions change, and if it reaches levels where physical exertion is considered dangerous, we will take appropriate measures, including postponing or cancelling events, if necessary.

Cal Athletics has been following AQI levels since the wildfires started last week. As of 9:30 a.m. Thursday, we have not seen AQI numbers that require postponement of Saturday’s Big Game. We will continue to monitor and will provide updates through the scheduled kickoff.

I have until 4 p.m. today to scratch my hotel reservation or it becomes nonrefundable. I think I’m going to turn this into a day trip.

This is a tough spot because alumni from both schools have longstanding plans to attend this game.

Certainly from a football scheduling standpoint the game can be postponed to Saturday, December 1.

If there’s a decision to postpone I hope it happens tomorrow. The problem with that is if the air were then to clear enough to play the game as scheduled. People have spent money on nonrefundable plane tickets and hotel reservations for a game that could have been played but wasn’t.

OTOH there’s the scenario where they say the game is going to be played, people are headed for Memorial Stadium and then 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff they say forget it. Then the criticism is “why didn’t you make this decision earlier?”

My own plan is to leave here on Saturday morning and pull off the road every 45 minutes or so to check the Cal athletics Twitter feed. Somehow I envision myself eating lunch in Vacaville with steam coming out of my ears.

While Mr. Zuckerberg conducted a public apology tour in the last year, Ms. Sandberg has overseen an aggressive lobbying campaign to combat Facebook’s critics, shift public anger toward rival companies and ward off damaging regulation. Facebook employed a Republican opposition-research firm to discredit activist protesters, in part by linking them to the liberal financier George Soros. It also tapped its business relationships, persuading a Jewish civil rights group to cast some criticism of the company as anti-Semitic.

These stories about what governments were offering Amazon keep getting crazier.

One of the components would have been an on-site “Amazon Georgia Academy” operated with the help of the University System of Georgia and the state tech college system. The price tag was listed as “incalculable/TBD” by state officials.

It would have offered a 24-week boot camp program for staffers, undergraduate and post-graduate coursework, and state-sponsored recruiters to help fill the company’s jobs. The state would pay to build the academy and pick up the first five years of operating costs – including salaries of professors and recruiters.

The state proposed an exclusive lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for Amazon executives, along with 50 free parking spots. And the firm developing a nearby hotel offered a plot of land for an “Amazon Experience Center” near the sprawling airport.

To allay concerns about Atlanta’s gridlock, the state said MARTA would consider adding an Amazon-dedicated car “to distribute products around the city.”

The Raiders were scheduled for a Sunday night home game vs. the Steelers in a few weeks but that one was wisely kicked back to the afternoon. ESPN doesn’t have the option to get rid of the Raiders so they are stuck with them for a Christmas Eve MNF game.

BA ranking of A’s prospects is out:
    1. Jesus Luzardo
    2. A.J. Puk
    3. Sean Murphy
    4. Kyler Murray
    5. Austin Beck
    6. Lazaro Armenteros
    7. Jameson Hannah
    8. Eli White
    9. Jorge Mateo

Hannah at 7 is a bit of a surprise but a good list considering how many graduations the A’s have had.

Not really a surprise. He wasn’t a top 20 guy for either BA or BP last year and while his numbers were better this past season he was essentially repeating AA.

        • aardvark Nov 19,2018 1:54 pm || Up

Here’s this nugget from the A’s prospect chat:

Eric (San Francisco): Between Will Allen and Richie Martin, who are you higher on, both with the bat and the glove?

Matt Eddy: I would side with SS Richie Martin on both counts. He finished just outside the top 10 of this ranking, but we consistently heard 60 field and 60 arm, with the arm being a separator for him versus SS Nick Allen. However, Allen’s consistency in the Midwest League at such a young age was remarkable and he could surpass Martin eventually. As a 19-year-old he led all MWL shortstops in assists and fielding percentage and showed an innate feel fro the position and an accurate arm.

          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Nov 19,2018 2:12 pm || Up

The defensive scouting reports are what make me think Martin is going to make it.

I guess Mateo has more upside with his tools, but his bat seems to be a mess right now. He’s not even hitting in the Dominican Winter League.

            • aardvark Nov 19,2018 4:01 pm || Up

That’s a good point. A 60 Field/arm at ss might be enough to carve out a career even if not much comes of the bat.

Amazon is looking at getting into the business of live telecasts of sports in a big way. This would be much bigger than the dabbling by Facebook (occasional exclusive MLB telecasts) and what already exists with Amazon Prime (simulcasts of Thursday night NFL games). Although this doesn’t immediately affect the A’s as they aren’t on a Fox RSN, their contract with Comcast is approaching its end in 2023 (2022? something like that) and it suggests how much different the distribution of daily local telecasts is going to look from that point forward.

Wow. Martin seems more likely to stick as a 25th man on some bad team than Bolt or Barrera.

EDIT: Aaron Brooks is still on the 40-man for god’s sake. They have to have traded him or something.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Nov 26,2018 12:42 pm || Up

      Also left unprotected: Max Schrock!

Revisiting Martin, I guess the thinking has to be that the risk of him getting picked and not offered back is low, and that risk is worth the reward of keeping him off the 40-man which is going to get pretty crunchy as some free agents get signed (e.g., there currently is only one catcher on there).

Still, hard for me to wrap my head around protecting Bolt, who struggled enough last year at AA that he had to be demoted. They must have gotten wind of scouts sniffing around him in the AFL or something.

I think Caruana has more of a fighting chance in “rapid” than Karjakin did, but he’ll be a big underdog. And if he only manages to fight Carlsen to a draw in the rapid, he is dead in the “blitz” round.

He was certainly the first A’s player I’ve ever noticed in the “Worldwide Trends” on Twitter.

“With the number one pick in the 2019 National Football League Draft, the Oakland, er, Las Vegas, er Fargo Raiders select Kyler Murray, quarterback, University of Oklahoma.”

The A’s didn’t give him so much money that he couldn’t walk away from it if the NFL came with the big bucks. Sure, this season could change his mind. Facing the Alabama defense in the semifinal if the Sooners happen to get there might change it back.

      • Soaker Soaker Nov 24,2018 3:25 pm || Up

Michigan’s destruction by tOSU definitely increases Murray’s chances of getting dismembered by Alabama. The Sooners would be right there for the fourth spot in the playoff if they beat Texas next Saturday.

Seriously, I know NFL offenses are being reimagined and college football serves as a test lab, but even so, at 5’10” Murray wouldn’t be a high draft pick as a quarterback. That’s Doug Flutie stature. The NFL’s interest in him would be as a tailback and kick returner type, he may not want that role and the money probably wouldn’t be there at the point where he would be drafted. Watching a little of the Territorial Cup this afternoon, Khalil Tate is the same sort of player (when healthy) as Murray but Tate is 6’2″ which will draw more NFL interest.

      • Soaker Soaker Nov 27,2018 6:30 pm || Up

Tonight’s new CFP rankings have Oklahoma at #5, which makes them the best bet to be the fourth team in the playoff. That’s because #1 Alabama and #4 Georgia play each other Saturday. Alabama should be in win or lose, while Georgia needs a win to hold its place. #2 Clemson also most likely survives a loss, but they would be hard-pressed to lose to Pitt. #3 Notre Dame is in. If Alabama wins, Oklahoma should make the playoff by beating Texas. Ohio State at #6 would have to crush Northwestern and look way, way better than Oklahoma to jump past the Sooners if both win.

So, Oklahoma vs. Alabama on December 29 if that all pans out. Thoughts and prayers to Kyler.

          First thoughts.

Things to like about the proposal:

          1) It’s unique.
          2) They are actually addressing concerns about the weather (i.e. wind). Unlike some other nameless stadia.
          3) The trees on the roofs are nice.
          4) The aerial tram will be fun if not practical.
          5) The location is much better than the current Coliseum site.
          6) Cranes!

          Things to dislike:
          1) It’s so ambitious and expensive. It relies on not just buying Howard Terminal, but also the current site. How realistic is that?
          2) It requires a ton of construction. Not just the stadium, but the surrounding buildings and the infrastructure. Not to mention also having construction at the current Coliseum. That timeline will come quick.
          3) Doesn’t really incorporate the water that much. For a waterfront park, 90% of the seats won’t see the water.

Overall, I’m mostly positive. IF they can get it done. Big if.

That’s about where I land. The biggest positive is it seems that, for once, everyone is behind this. But until I have to take out a payday loan to get some tickets for the place I wont believe it is happening.

            Pretty much all of this.
The stadium itself plus infrastructure and extra buildings around it, dealing with current neighbors of that site, two ped bridges, a fkin’ gondola, and then a basically unrelated redevelopment project at the current site. Would be great if they can pull all that off, but not sure I believe it.

Also, sounds like someone is mad she didn’t get any kickbacks:

I also agree with this take, but I’d add that the dual-location package actually may make this deal easier to make, slightly. Because it offers City/County a path out of the stadium business, it develops the current site, and it provides a mostly private financing mechanism, all of which the govt bodies really want. It will be hard for sure, but to me it’s actually somewhat more likely this way than Howard Terminal would be alone.

        Oregonian story:

The Portland Diamond Project announced Thursday it had a deal to build a baseball stadium for a major-league team at the Port of Portland’s Terminal 2 in Northwest Portland.

        Yay!

        A few paragraphs later…

The port and the Diamond Project declined to release any terms of the agreement, but Diamond Project President Craig Cheek said they had agreed on a price.

Port spokeswoman Melanie Mesaros said Thursday’s agreement is to allow the Diamond Project to determine whether Terminal 2 is a viable stadium location.

Still unclear is how the ownership group would pay for a site and its redevelopment.

Manafort lied in violation of his plea deal, and Stone and Corsi just withdrew from their draft plea deals. It’s almost as though someone just gave them powerful assurances of safety from incarceration.

Earlier this month, eh? Surely just a coincidence that this was just when the president fired the Attorney General and replaced him with a hack loyalist.

Rudolph Giuliani, an attorney for Trump, said the president does not recall ever speaking to either Stone or Corsi about WikiLeaks. He said that the president’s legal team obtained a copy of the Corsi document earlier this month and lodged a complaint with the Justice Department about the inclusion of Trump’s name in the draft filing. The episode delayed the delivery of Trump’s written reponses to questions posed by the special counsel.

One of the problems that a lot of people like myself — we have very high levels of intelligence, but we’re not necessarily such believers. You look at our air and our water and it’s right now at a record clean. But when you look at China and you look at parts of Asia and when you look at South America, and when you look at many other places in this world, including Russia, including – just many other places — the air is incredibly dirty. And when you’re talking about an atmosphere, oceans are very small. And it blows over and it sails over. I mean, we take thousands of tons of garbage off our beaches all the time that comes over from Asia. It just flows right down the Pacific, it flows, and we say where does this come from. And it takes many people to start off with.

Following college football definitely gives me the opportunity to visit places I wouldn’t otherwise go. Pullman WA a couple years ago, obviously. Depending on the outcome of the rescheduled Big Game, which I’m coming to Berkeley for on Saturday, there’s a possibility the Bears would be invited to the Sun Bowl in El Paso on NYE, and why the hell would I ever go to El Paso except for that. There are also some hot springs in southern New Mexico which would justify that trip.

A plunge into SEC country is intriguing especially since Cal would actually have a chance in the game; only Arkansas was worse than Ole Miss in the SEC this year. That game at Auburn in 2024…no, thank you.

    Anybody following this race?

The characters are perfect, a grumpy British officer versus an outspoken American with huge IG following.

O’Brady opts for a bite-size chunk of an organic, calorie-rich energy bar that his sponsor made for this expedition. Consisting of coconut oil, nuts and seeds and other ingredients, each chunk contains as many as 500 calories.

Rudd grabs a fistful of chocolate and nuts or some salami and cheese from his “grazing bag.” The salami melts in his mouth, but the cheese has been frozen solid, so he keeps it tucked into his cheek like a hamster until it thaws, as he continues to move.

Most days, Rudd skis for more than 10 hours. Whenever he feels like stopping, he marches an extra 11 steps before he sets up camp.

It was once calculated, Rudd explained, that if the famed English explorer Robert Falcon Scott and his team had taken 11 more steps each day on their expedition in the early 1900s, they would have survived.

After completing the 11th step, it takes him about 20 minutes to set up camp.

Neutral site just doesn’t work in the Pac-12 with both schools 800 miles away. The people who came were passionate in spite of the “defensive struggle” (terrible offense, particularly Utah’s) but there just weren’t enough of them. Looking at some of the games tomorrow with Oklahoma-Texas at Jerry World, Alabama-Georgia in Atlanta and Ohio State-Northwestern in Indianapolis, those games are much more reasonable distances from the campuses, plus they are on Saturday rather than on Friday night for Fox’s convenience.

While I was not a big fan of acquiring Fiers in the first place, he pitched well, and even if last year was a bit of a fluke, one year at $10M or so for an average pitcher is still a good deal. Giving that up for nothing (especially given the current lack of starting pitchers) seems bizarre.

I gotta say, I have no faith in Logan Shore ever amounting to a big league pitcher. Dude’s already 24 and couldn’t strike anybody out in AA last year. Old pitching prospects who can’t K people are something I’m perfectly happy to turn into any kind of value.

Of course, I also have no faith in Kaep or Holmes ever pitching either, so non-tendering Fiers seems ill advised unless they can sign him for less than his arb number. They did it with Cust a while back.

Had surgery, out for at least part of 2019: Manaea, Puk, Cotton, Gossett, Triggs
On roster but probably over a year away: Holmes, Kaprielian
Not on roster, but could be close to ready: Luzardo

It seems to me that even in the unlikely event that we signed a top-tier starter, we would still need to supplement that first group with a couple lesser established players … kind of like Mike Fiers.

i mean, i wonder what happened there. trump’s typography is always so haphazard. either kneejerk choices, like trump las vegas (trajan). or OK choices executed badly, like trump tower (rockwell or museo slab or something steady like that, but just all jammed in together, probably to make the size of the sign bigger). the only organizing principle seems to be, trump looking at the plans or prototype and saying, great great… but make my name bigger.

OTOH, every time i go to use gotham nowadays, i always instinctually look for it first under O, for obama.

Truman died on 12/26/72. In those days there weren’t a lot of fluffy off-days in school calendars, e.g. we had school on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. So I would guess we were scheduled back on Tuesday 1/2/73 and got that day off. Johnson then died about 3 weeks later (1/22/73).

I probably mentioned on my last A’s trip to KC that the Truman Library in Independence isn’t far from the ballpark and it’s a worthwhile visit. Harry and Bess are buried next to each other in the central courtyard.

The 2018 Bad Sex in Fiction award has been awarded. Somehow, none of the books that included these passages was the winner:

“Beneath them her wetness met his own wetness, and they stirred against each other, she pestled him slowly, until miraculously he found himself rigid again, as though he had risen out of his own pain, fresh and ready”

“I slipped my erect penis inside. Or, from another angle, that part of her actively swallowed my penis, immersing it in what felt like warm butter”

“Her vaginal ratchet moved in concertina-like waves, slowly chugging my organ as a boa constrictor swallows its prey”

That second one made me LOL. Then I clicked through and found out it’s Murakami, who is an actual good writer, usually.

Sounds more like Cracker Barrel’s problem. Not yours.
