      The ambulance one is especially lame, with the industry deciding to spend millions on a ballot measure rather than 5-10x millions settling for their previous worker abuses.

    The last time we FKers were getting returns together was the worst sociopolitical night of our lives. So it’s gotta work out better than that, right?

    Bad:
    Senate is looking like a lost cause (FL, IN, MO, ND, AZ, TN all looking bad), but was always a long shot.
    GA and FL(?) gov

    Neutralish:
    House is still leaning Dem, though maybe closer than expected. I am not freaking out. Should I be?

    Good:
    Pretty solid wins in OH, PA, WI bode well for next election.
    Kobach losing in KS?!

    Good big-picture trends:

    -The Trumpublican brand is very bad in previously Republican suburbs and cities (OKC! SLC! Charleston, SC!).
    -Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and the close call in Minnesota look like 2016 flukes, and Iowa isn’t as far gone as I feared. A better candidate than Clinton who isn’t trying for a third straight Democratic term can win them handily.
    -Virginia, Colorado, and Nevada have gone from purple to solidly blue.
    -Georgia and to some extent Texas are trending toward the Democrats.
    -Consensus liberal priorities like medicaid expansion, pre-existing conditions protection, and stuff like minimum wage hikes are broadly popular even in conservative states.
    -Hard-right state governments that cut services are not popular.
    -Felon re-enfranchisement in Florida
    -The Democratic House caucus got younger, and includes a lot of compelling new figures who will rise through the ranks.

    Bad big-picture trends:

    -Ultra-motivated white rural voters, especially in diverse states, are apparently not a 2016 fluke. They turned out huge even without their god on the ballot, cancelling out motivated Democrats in a bunch of statewide races.
    -The Senate is going to be a problem for Democrats for a long time. Missouri, North Dakota, and Indiana were always going away eventually, but losing an incumbent in Florida and (probably) failing to pick up an open seat in Arizona puts them in a big hole.
    -Our voting laws are broken post-Shelby County, in a way that entrenches Republican power, and we won’t be able to fix it in big states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas until the Democrats somehow luck into the House, Senate and Presidency simultaneously and pass a new voting rights act that is to Justice Roberts’ liking.

      Re. Senate: Is there any lesson in Manchin and Tester surviving in very conservative states, while Heitkamp, McCaskill, and Donnelly lost? In particular, is it true that Manchin survived partly by voting for Kavanaugh (ugh), while not doing for cost Donnelly (supposedly exit polls showed this as a big issue in Indiana)? Or is the difference really just local factors – personal popularity and strength of opponents? I’m inclined to believe the latter – the three losers also tried to play the bipartisanship game and it didn’t work for them in the end, while Tester actually has a pretty liberal record on a lot of issues (with the exception of gun control) – but that could just be my own bias.

        I tend to think that Montana is a different animal than those other states. There’s still a strain of farmer/rancher-populism there, a little libertarian rejection of religious cultural stuff, a real libertarian party to siphon Republican votes, and enough college-town hippies to make up the difference. They’ve also had Democrats as governors for a while now, unlike the others.

        Manchin is a real-deal conservative Democrat who can play the culture war game on guns and shit, while also going appropriately populist on economic and health-care stuff when necessary, which still has some potency in West Virginia. And he’s really talented at it. Still, he barely won. Maybe his Kavanaugh dance saved him in the end.

        I think North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri (each for their own reasons) are just too invested in Democrats being the cultural enemy at this point to elect any of them statewide. The only reason we had any of them was terrible republican candidates in 2012 and a toxic environment for republicans in 2006. Those races were not close enough for the Kavanaugh vote to have made a difference.

        Another thought is that our politics has just gotten more efficient at sorting blue senators into blue presidential states and red senators into red presidential states. This is a bad thing for the Democrats, and it also means they cannot continue to leave seats on the table in places like Colorado, Maine, and Pennsylvania.

        • andeux andeux Nov 7,2018 11:39 am || Up

          Yeah. Trump won 30 states to 20. Even giving OH/PA/MI/WI back to the Dems, it means we need to hold every seat in the blue states, and steal a couple in the remaining swing states (FL, AZ, IA, NC, GA). STATEHOOD FOR DC AND PR WOULD ALSO HELP.

            The Georgia senate seat looks really gettable right now. Sadly, however, it may depend on whether the Democrat wins a runoff for secretary of state and can then cease that office’s policy of screwing over black voters.

          Iowa in particular is interesting. It’s kind of the opposite of what I said about Indiana – I think of it as very conservative, but really it isn’t. Democrats just won 3 of the 4 congressional seats there, and gave King a scare in the 4th. But their Senators, Grassley and Ernst, are both very far right. Seems like those seats should both be in play.

      Re. Florida: What to make of the fact that most other swing states moved 5-10 points toward the Dems compared to 2016, while Florida stayed exactly where it was. One theory might be that while Trump’s immigration stuff (and general embrace of white supremacy) has pushed other Hispanic populations from mostly Dem to almost entirely Dem (and also motivated them to vote), Florida’s right-leaning Cuban community has, for various reasons, stayed firmly Republican. I don’t know if the data supports this, or what else is going on in that crazy state.

      Also, I’m surprised the re-enfranchisement thing passed so easily there. I would think most Republican voters would oppose that on both policy (tough on crime!) and realpolitik (mostly black people, likely to vote Dem) grounds.

      A few other odd phenomena:

      -Lots of Gov/Senate ticket splitting in the midwest, almost none in Florida (although the handful of people who voted for the old white Democrat but not the young black Democrat could still make all the difference).
      -Regarding the midwestern portion of that, who in hell are all of these people voting for Scott Walker and Tammy Baldwin at the same time?
      -Northeastern Democrats sure do love their Republican governors.

    A local thing I couldn’t vote on because it wasn’t even in my state: Voters in the City of South Lake Tahoe voted to ban vacation home rentals in residential areas outside the “tourist core” (i.e. close to the Stateline casinos). Too many Bay Area kids coming up for the weekend, parking a dozen cars and throwing all-night parties; enough people finally got PO’d about that. It knocks out about 80% of the VHRs in the city if it survives lawsuits. In the short term I would guess it makes my townhouse development more desirable for buyers who want to operate VHRs as income property. We’ve had the argument within the HOA over the last couple years and in the end there wasn’t much support for restricting short-term rentals; that vote was obviously among owners only and people don’t like being told they can’t rent out their property as they please.

    @Soaker re vacation rentals. If it passes I am really interested to see how this works out once the grace period ends in 2021. A huge % of home buyers banked on VRBO income to pay their notes. A market glut and resulting price declines seem likely. Wonder how that’ll affect the market on the NV side

    "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
    • Soaker Soaker Nov 8,2018 2:06 pm || Up

      A big part of the argument for Measure T was that VHRs have taken a lot of long-term rentals off the market. Many people who work up here have to commute a minimum of 20 miles from Carson City, Minden or Gardnerville, which can be tough in the winter. Much of that rental income should still be there, just from a different demographic.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Nov 8,2018 5:30 pm || Up

        Huh, intuitively I would think many don’t overlap, at least in the classic vacation home you want to use yourselves model. In many Bay Area communities regs limit the number of short-term rental days one can rent out (like no more than two weeks a month, or 20 days a year, or 14 consecutive days, etc). Enforcement is spotty but it has the effect of separating short-term rentals from permanent housing stock.

      I’m wondering what climate extremes such as more extended dry and very hot weather are going to do to availability of fire insurance in vulnerable areas (glances out window). The remaining private insurance companies that do write policies are going to say no way, you want to live there, you bear the risk. I guess it will have to go to a state high-risk pool which will be unbelievably expensive.

            i did love to hate the hippy dippy interviewees tho. “then this song was on the radio? that the grateful dead covered? and the grateful dead was her favorite band? so i knew she was trying to tell me something through this song.” which totally tracks. except the dead covered every fucking song ever, so…

            i hadn’t caught on to his style in atlanta monster. so every single epp i was like, this is the killer! then again next week about somebody else.

              Yes, and not only bad storytelling but how on earth did a producer allow some of the unintelligible telephone audio go on the air? Yeah, done with that one. One of my daughters has recommended Death in Ice Valley – do you know that one?

      Drama! Apparently the St. Louis Chess club (the preeminent American club) accidentally posted a clip to YouTube this morning showing Team Caruana prepping for the match, and it included a shot of a laptop screen showing significant details of the openings Caruana was preparing.

    Hmmmm…this I-5 district stretching from Bakersfield to Fresno was called for the Republican on election night, but….

    Relatedly, that is a bizarrely low vote total. Devin Nunes’ neighboring district has almost twice as many votes cast overall.

    • 5Aces 5Aces Nov 20,2018 9:43 am || Up

      Certainly not an expert, but I-5 from Bakersfield to Fresno is a whole lot of nothing vs Nunes having the “larger” cities along the 99 corridor.

        Definitely true, but congressional districts within a state are supposed to be roughly equal in population, or the map is unconstitutional. Possibilities:

        1. Valadao’s district has shrunk in population (or grown more slowly) in the eight years since the census.
        2. Valadao’s district has more non-citizen residents who count for the census (FK you Wilbur Ross) but can’t vote.
        3. There’s some other large group of ineligible residents in the district, like a very big prison.
        4. There’s something else in the demography of Valadao’s district that makes them vote at lower rates (younger, poorer)

        • 5Aces 5Aces Nov 20,2018 10:24 am || Up

          Now I want to go and look at the maps, but I bet 2 and 3 fit the bill. He may have both Corcoran and Avenal.

        total pop is remarkably similar, ~700K. big diff in hispanic latino pop. hard to see the white pop now that hispanic has been rolled into a subcategory of whiteness in the census. (thanks obama.)

          This was a terrible election for the AP callers. They flat out blew 3 or 4 calls and had to withdraw some calls that ultimately turned out to be barely right. This one has looked like a coin flip for weeks and they just let it sit out there.

          Well

          The North Carolina board of elections has delayed certifying the results, citing “claims of irregularities and fraudulent activities related to absentee by-mail voting.”

          The board voted 7-2 on Friday to hear evidence by Dec. 21 on whether to finalize the result. The board could ultimately decide to hold a new election.

      Both Janz and Nunes had absurd amounts of money, so turnout would likely increase. Valadao was suppose to have this race in the bag easily, and it looks like more motivation from Dems in a district that has a pretty significant D reg advantage pulled out what could have gone the other way if Valadao was running a super strong campaign like he did the last couple years.

        Valadao got 63% of the primary vote! Obviously the Republican brand in California is terrible, and it is probably at a low ebb even in the central valley, but still a stunning choke job.
