    I’m not paying particularly close attention but that looked like a really stupid waste of a replay challenge by Roberts.

      In real time I thought they might have a case. Having Bob Geren as your on-the-spot decision maker feels like poor casting.

      That said, I surprised myself by how emphatically I wanted Machado to go yard in the top of the first. Man do I loathe the Red Sox.

        I have no love for the Red Sox or their fans, but this group of players and manager are pretty likeable. And the more I am exposed to the Dodgers, the more I dislike them.

        I’d like both their planes to run into each other on the tarmac. Not kill anyone or seriously injure anyone, but enough to remove 25 players on both sides from being able to play until March.

    “You’ve got to tie the game up, before you go ahead.” Technically true, I guess…

    • ptbnl Oct 24,2018 12:09 am || Up

      I didn’t see the play to know the context, but I don’t think it’s true in general – to my mind a homer with runners on base, down by one, is at no point a tied game.

        If I miss third base it technically isnt a HR is it?

        • ptbnl Oct 24,2018 10:09 am || Up

          I’m the last person to ask, but my understanding was that it was still a homer but that the runner who missed the base was out and didn’t score.

          So certainly there are cases where you can fail to score all the available runs, but the exception to the “you’ve got to tie before you go ahead” assertion still exists.

          If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
          • dmoas Oct 24,2018 10:57 am || Up

            Nah. Until the moment the batter crosses the plate, they don’t have the lead. The moment is generally very brief and doesn’t involve a new play, but it’s still there. And it’s true since that run doesn’t count until he crosses the plate. If it were automatic regardless of what he did on the basepath, you’d be correct.

            As for the missing third base, it would be considered a double at that point in the score book. It’s only a homer if he touches them all.

            • ptbnl Oct 24,2018 11:00 am || Up

              But is the score continuously updated as the play unfolds, or discretely as a single step at the end of the play?

              If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
              • dmoas Oct 24,2018 12:18 pm || Up

                The former. For instance, if a run scores and then the last out is on a tag afterward, that run still scores. Granted some of it depends on the situation. Since if that out was a force, the run wouldn’t score.

                • ptbnl Oct 24,2018 12:29 pm || Up

                  I think your example is still a case of the latter. At the end of the play one run is scored, and your second example (where is isn’t) confirms that. Only once the play ends can the total number of runs scored be tallied, and at that point the total is added in one step.

                  If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.

                  (You’re not going to let this go, are you?)

                  5.08 How a Team Scores
                  (a) One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first, second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning.
                  EXCEPTION: A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base; (2) by any runner being forced out; or (3) by a preceding runner who is declared out because he
                  failed to touch one of the bases.

                  This makes clear that in the general case the run is considered to have scored as soon as the runner touches home plate. The exceptional case is, well, an exception. In particular, this exception does not apply to your case.

                  Also , 7.01 (g)(3) about walk-offs:

                  If the home team scores the winning run in its half of the
                  ninth inning (or its half of an extra inning after a tie), the
                  game ends immediately when the winning run is scored.

                  Again, the run scores causing the play (and game) to end, not the other way around.

                  But here, finally, is your exception for walk-off homers:

                  EXCEPTION: If the last batter in a game hits a home run out of the playing field, the batter-runner and all runners on base are permitted to score, in accordance with the base-running rules, and the game ends when the batter-runner touches home plate.

                  Note that it does not say that the other runs don’t score until the batter-runner touches home, it just says the game doesn’t end until that point. So each run still scores as soon as the runner touches home, per 5.08(a).

            Ouch, would this be a bad way to lose a game. We would forget all about Jeremy Giambi.

            5.09 Making an Out

            (d) Effect of Preceding Runner’s Failure to Touch a Base

            Unless two are out, the status of a following runner is not affected by a preceding runner’s failure to touch or retouch a base. If, upon appeal, the preceding runner is the third out, no runners following him shall score. If such third out is the result of a force play, neither preceding nor following runners shall score.

                In a walk-off situation the home plate umpire always stands there making sure each incoming runner touches the plate, even when the cups of water and sunflower seeds are being hurled about. I can imagine the situation where the home team is down by 2 with the bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, D hits the ball out of the park, A and B touch the plate, C misses the plate and D touches the plate. That’s a tie game going to the 10th if the visiting team successfully appeals. All the celebrating home players might make it tough to see C missing the plate…but I guess the visiting catcher has the same obligation as the umpire to stand there and check those runners in.

                  I kind of wish they’d start calling interference on the team running on the field who celebrate over top of home plate. Let them clearly touch the plate, then celebrate.

                • Soaker Soaker Oct 24,2018 2:44 pm || Up

                  I do think there should be a restriction on guys racing out of the dugout until the play is completed (don’t go beyond the warning track in front of the dugout). It risks interference on a live play (throw coming from the outfield), but even on a home run the replay cameras should have an unobstructed view to settle any dispute of this nature, as far-fetched as it may seem.

                • dmoas Oct 24,2018 2:54 pm || Up

                  Yep. That last part is important. And I think that if the team obstructs that view, then they should lose any challenge that may come as a result.

                Baseball is very tricky in the rule application for determining this sort of thing. I feel like each scenario presents a thought experiment to determine whether it’s individual scores or all as one.

    Probably my biggest pet peeve about official scoring is that Chris Taylor would get an error on the throw that nailed Kinsler about 98% of the time.

    • dmoas Oct 25,2018 12:19 pm || Up

      I don’t like that there’s no stat for “team error” where the team together should have made the play but either through miscommunication or whatever, they fucked up and made an error that can’t be assigned to any one individual. That and the fly ball attempt that the outfielder misses and results in an “inside the park home run” despite it being an error where the fielder never it touched and failed to catch and/or block it.

      This probably won’t mean much to anybody here, but also Alameda Brewhouse on NE Fremont in Portland. That’s one of the originals, before brewpubs proliferated like Starbucks, kind of similar to Pacific Coast Brewing in downtown Oakland which has been deceased for a while. I went to the Oregon Brewers’ Festival along the Willamette in downtown Portland a few times before it became unenjoyably huge, and Alameda was always a nice side trip.

          Bumgarner has been better than Kershaw in the postseason. Sad but true. (Much closer by FIP than by ERA, but still true.)

      I went out and early voted, which was a mood-enhancer. The gerrymandered district on my half of Cincinnati is safe Republican (because it includes a rural swath of southern Ohio that almost reaches to West Virginia), but there is a competitive race in the gerrymandered district on the other side of town… and we saw Aftab hanging out at the early voting location!

        A neutral-site game well over a day’s drive from either campus, with the participating teams usually not determined until the previous weekend, is not an easy sell. That one will always be played before vast acreage of empty seats. At least with the Cheez-It Bowl I know about 3 weeks in advance that Cal is in it; whether I want to spend the time and money to travel to see Cal play an exhibition game against an equally mediocre team is the main point of decision.

    I wouldn’t mind watching Jared Goff and Aaron Rodgers this afternoon, but we are instead offered the Bay Area’s atrocity of Colts-Raiders and 49ers-Cardinals (combined 5-22).

    It’s the Niners game that creates the conflict, and I don’t think Reno would ever dump a Niners game anyway. We have dumped terrible Raiders teams in favor of better games, but now that the Raiders are Nevada’s NFL team we’re probably stuck with all of their games permanently, even though Las Vegas is a lot further from Reno than Oakland.

    • andeux andeux Oct 28,2018 11:50 am || Up

      It is really an impressively bad slate. Looks like you have the mediocre Seattle/Detroit (both 3-3) early, while the Bay Area gets Washington (4-2) vs. NYG (1-5) for some reason. Are people here supposed to still be interested in Alex Smith or something?

    Nevada election turnout numbers for GM to analyze (or overanalyze). Go to the Cumulative Turnout spreadsheets for the 2016 and 2018 general elections.

    In 2016:
    Total votes cast by registered Democrats: 40.15%
    Total votes cast by registered Republicans: 35.90% (425 basis points lower)

    In-person early votes cast by registered Democrats: 42.49%
    In-person early votes cast by registered Republicans: 35.63% (686 basis points lower)
    Note: In the 2016 election 47.95% of all votes were cast by in-person early voters so this number is significant)

    In 2018, through October 31 (in-person early votes and absentee/mail-in ballots returned so far):
    Total votes cast by registered Democrats: 41.40%
    Total votes cast by registered Republicans: 38.77% (263 basis points lower)

    In-person early votes cast by registered Democrats: 42.07%
    In-person early votes cast by registered Republicans: 37.83% (424 basis points lower)

    So the ratio of Democrat turnout to Republican turnout is a little lower this year than in 2016 by both measures. That’s what I would expect because historically it’s tougher to get Nevada’s Democrats to turn out in off years.

    Now consider the margins of victory in 2016:
    Clinton 47.92%
    Trump 45.50% (242 basis point margin)

    Cortez Masto (D) 47.10%
    Heck (R) 44.67% (243 basis point margin)

    My highly amateur proposal is that, based on these numbers, if Rosen defeats Heller the margin will likely be smaller than 242 basis points.

    One thing that could change that would be the nonpartisan vote. It could be that independents were willing to give Trump a chance in 2016, or just hated Hillary, but now having seen two years of this crap the independent vote might tilt a bit more Democratic.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Nov 1,2018 10:54 am || Up

He should be allowed to blow it up and rebuild over the next couple of years according to his own vision. Now the question is whether Jon Gruden’s vision is the right one for an NFL franchise. I would think he would get at least through the 2021 season, but man, if it’s not working at that point the franchise is toast for a long time.

      I certainly won’t buy 2019 tix if they stay in Oakland and my sense from fans at games is most feel similar. Exception may be families/ groups for whom the gameday routine is so ingrained they don’t know what else to do.

      2019 options are all just terrible:

      1. Renew one year in Oakland. City/ County lawsuit may be falling apart (as it should) so maybe locals swallow more pride and realize some rent beats no rent. In that case I’d be surprised if they cracked 25K seadon tickets which is incredibly few by NFL standards.

      2. Sam Boyd in Vegas. Was a good place for the Dead shows I saw the re in 1993. Not remotely an “NFL caliber” venue. But that’s true of the soccer field they’re using in LA now.

      3. San Diego: not gonna happen. Whichever entity swallows pride it sure as hell won’t be the NFL.

      4. London/Mexico City/San Antonio. If every game’s a road game the attendance might be great!

        Sam Boyd is bare bones but it presents a good opportunity to start building the local fan base. It’s only one season, deal with it. It does have plenty of parking for tailgating, and that’s a problem at the new place; I think they are planning on a lot of offsite parking with shuttles. Two exhibition games at night, have them play three of the first four on the road with the home game on Thursday Night Football and it’s into October before they have to play a 1 p.m. home game.

        Fangraphs just posted 2019 Steamer projections. Here are the projections if the A’s keep the 2018 lineup:

        C: Lucroy = 1.4 WAR (0.6 in 2018)
        1B: Olson = 3.0 WAR (3.4 in 2018)
        2B: Lowrie = 2.2 WAR (4.9 in 2018)
        SS: Semien = 2.4 WAR (3.7 in 2018)
        3B: Chapman = 4.4 WAR (6.5 in 2018)
        LF: Canha = 0.6 WAR (2.0 in 2018) // Pinder = 0.9 WAR (1.8 in 2018) // Martini = 0.5 WAR (1.3 in 2018)
        CF: Laureano = 2.6 WAR (2.1 in 2018)
        RF: Piscotty = 2.3 WAR (3.0 in 2018)
        DF: Davis = 1.9 WAR (2.6 in 2018)

        None of it looks that surprising. They had a good 2018 season, so most players are expected to regress back to the mean… and this is especially true for Jed because he has such a long track record of not being a 5 win player. Chapman has a pretty nice projection. Laureano is projected for just 130 games plus some regression in his hitting. Davis is projected to only hit 39 dingers, but we know he’s a lock for 40+.

          Anyway, going from 2018 to the 2019 projections is a loss of 9.7 WAR, which is a lot. We can hope that the projections are being overly conservative on Chapman, Laureano, and the cerberus in LF, but Dave and Billy should probably get busy.

    No one on the Arsenal pitch seems to understand the offside rule.

          Nah, better to time it to the opening of the new stadium in 2037.

    Am I the only one left still watching the Walking Dead? Last night’s big development totally sucked.

    ETA I don’t remember what spoiler text code works.

      I’ve wanted to catch up, but I couldn’t get through the speech of the week BS they had last season or whenever. Kept trying to stretch that arc out too long. And now with too much of the main cast leaving it’s hard to feel enthusiastic about coming back.

        Plot-wise this season has actually been a big improvement over last few years. I’d even recommend it. But the writers/producers totally botched last night’s Rick Grimes outcome. Apparently in favor of future spin off movies.

      I watch it, and yes. Their utter refusal to ever actually do anything, in a show that is supposed to be about narrative arc, drives me CRAZY.

    Inevitably the bottom-of-the-table clash between the side that can’t attack (Huddersfield) and the side that can’t defend (Fulham) was settled by an own-goal.
