    If you blinked you missed Gio. Good first inning, HR and a long loud flyout in the second, then yanked even though pitcher spot leads off 3rd.

      Fortunately I missed that retchfest.

      Unless the Bears win 5 of their final 6 (ha ha), this will be their ninth consecutive losing season in Pac-10/12 conference play, and the direction ain’t good.

      2010-12 (Tedford): 9-18 (.333)
      2013-16 (Dykes): 10-26 (.278)
      2017-18 (Wilcox): 2-10 (.167)
      Overall conference record in the 2010s: 21-54 (.280)

      They also had an eight-season streak from 1994-2001 and a seven-season streak from 1983-1989.

          I’ve had to sum up the courage to admit that…after the win in Provo I was fired up enough that I looked at the schedule, realized I haven’t seen the Bears in Corvallis since the 1990s, and added Saturday to the travel schedule. A nonrefundable plane ticket and nonrefundable Priceline hotel reservation later, I’ll be flying to Portland on Friday for The Doormat Bowl Presented by Rubbermaid, or something like that. For what it’s worth, the Beavers are so bad that the Bears are a 7-point favorite in the road game, in spite of the fact that Cal has lost 14 consecutive conference road games.

          That I scheduled a conflict with Game 6 of the ALCS in mid-September accurately reflects my confidence at that time that the A’s would not be playing in an ALCS Game 6 this Saturday.

    sure, less-certain sympathies, let’s go with that.

    i’m strugglin’ today. stephen elliott is a friend of mine. known him for years now, professionally and fun-wise. i’ve worked on his book covers. and yeah, he’s always been a piece of work, especially sexually speaking. i mean, read the books and it’s all there. “my girlfriend comes to the city and beats me up.” he showed me the thing mentioned in that one day or two after it happened, the part when she scratched “possession” into his skin, 2-inch letters down the side of his ribcage… and misspelled it one-S in one of the double-esses. last i saw him was a couple years ago at a showing of his underground movie about how james franco had bought the rights of his book adderall diaries, which was about his life, and therefore in some weird way franco owned his life, so he made a movie about franco making a movie, and it couldn’t be shown anywhere commercially (stephen’s movie) because, well, he didn’t have the rights to it. there’s just always some weird twist between sex and life and fiction with stephen.

    and somehow he got on the shitty men list. which i’m all in favor of, as much as i can without reading it. but i’m not supposed to read it, it’s not for me. and yep, i don’t want the weinsteins to keep on doing that the way they do that. 100% for any way to stop it, grassroots whisper campaign at first, hashtag second, whatever it is third.

    but stephen, and rape, they just don’t go together in my mind. stephen and uncomfortable sexual stuff? sure. stephen and not understanding social cues and clues? also there. but rape?

    then again, the list doesn’t have anybody say he raped them. it says there are reports of him being accused of rape. what is that, 4th-hand? i mean, i’d be fully on-board with condemnation if someone said, he raped me, or he accosted me, or even, he mistreated me and made me feel ____. but i heard he was accused of rape, that’s just full of invitation for clarification. speaking of invitation, unsolicited invitation to come up to his apartment? is there any other kind of invitation besides unsolicited? because if you solicit an invitation… you’re doing the inviting! (unsolicitedly.)

    so yeah, that far, i’m all, he takes it in the butt from a dominatrix while tied up and there’s film evidence of his sub-space look of total passivity. sorry he made women feel uncomfortable (he sometimes makes me feel uncomfortable, what with his constant twitching), but really, he just likes to snuggle. so it seems unreasonable he’d end up on the list and totally reasonable that he sued the woman and jane does who ran the list that called him a violent rapist.

    but then there’s the other side, the one where many of my friends are digging trenches. including another dear friend who was once my intern and later became the #2 person at steve’s startup literary website. he went on a twitter rant about how suing moira was an act of violence. and other friends of varying degrees of closeness to stephen who also went on social rants of varying degrees of indignation about what it does to the list. or how because the list was originally private it wasn’t a public publication. so fund the gofundme moira set up, this is a notch in the belt of the men’s rights movement, shitty man proves shitty men’s list correct.

    bottom line, i don’t know what the ultimate fact is. all i know is how everybody is moving into formation *also not knowing what the ultimate fact is.

    i guess i’m torn because i don’t see any nuance in any of this. it’s killing me that it’s all or nothing these days. there’s no, the list is useful within limitations, or accusations can have varying degrees of validity, or that a list of heresay can have possible failures. OR, that stephen can be an attempted rapist and i didn’t even know it. but that really, it just pulls people into their either/or camps, totally aligning each person to wholesale views where, if i believe 1% of this then i have to believe 100% of it in all cases always across the board.

    and yet, fuck steve for the egregious dollar amount of the suit (go –ugh, what’s her name? even though she’s been in the news as recently as today… please hold, i have to look this up… SWIFT. go taylor swift! and her $1 lawsuit), which doesn’t really go toward proving his point, as well as (non-sexually) fuck moira because it should have been someone with more authority on this that started the list than someone who graduated in, what, 2013? was that college or high school, please? and fuck all my friends, for drawing sides so quickly.

    sorry about this rant. it’s just… a safe space here, behind the google shields.

    ps, someone please school me on quillette. that’s where steve first put this out on, though i first read it in NYT this morning, and i’m wondering if it’s like RT or drudgery, but for, like incels or kavanaughs (if there’s a difference between them). and that’s the danger there, that by accepting that maybe stephen was hot fairly treated, even, not fairly accused (of something he actually did), that it proves exculpatory to, well, shitty men, albeit in other suits.

      My (admittedly cursory) impression of Quillette is that it is primarily a place for psuedo-intellectual pushback against “political correctness.” One of those places for people with letters after their names to complain in stilted language that stifling campus culture won’t let them talk about how reasoned thought makes racism ok.

        • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Nov 12,2018 11:19 am || Up

          I think I got it pretty much right.

          Quillette now publishes roughly seven to 10 articles each week. The suppression of free speech on campus is a big theme, as is the reality of sex difference and the revisiting of post-colonial relations—all in their own way denunciations of what Lehmann describes as the left’s “purity politics.” The list of the site’s all-time Top 10 most-read articles includes “The Psychology of Progressive Hostility,” “I Was the Mob Until the Mob Came for Me” and “Why Women Don’t Code.” (Short answer: Because they don’t want to.) Quillette’s rapid-fire response in support of James Damore, the writer of the notorious “Google memo” that criticized attempts to promote women and minorities within the organization, was so popular that the site crashed. (Lehmann’s tech support team told her it could have been a successful denial-of-service attack.) And when the writer Stephen Elliott wanted to protest his inclusion on the widely circulated “Shitty Media Men” list, he turned to Quillette, which published his essay, “How an Anonymous Accusation Derailed My Life,” this fall. (Shortly after the article ran, Elliott sued the creator of the list, Moira Donegan, for $1.5 million in damages.) But Quillette’s editorial mix is more unpredictable than these greatest hits might suggest; recently, a treatise against thank-you notes led the site for a few days.

          Ben Winegard, an assistant professor of psychology at Hillsdale College, a small Christian school in Michigan, isn’t as sanguine as Lehmann. In 2016, he co-authored an article for Quillette titled “On the Reality of Race and the Abhorrence of Racism,” arguing that race exists and corresponds to genetic differences, and that denying this fact “leaves a vacuum for extremists to exploit.” It’s not something Winegard, who identifies as a “New Deal Democrat,” would write today. “I have had to stop writing about race because it’s just so toxic and not even responsible to do,” he told me. Winegard remains an avid Quillette reader and says the work it does is “important.” But there are risks inherent in a research forum raising difficult questions about gender, race and intelligence, he says: Young people might glom on with a wrongheaded view of the data. He also worries that the site, ironically, is becoming an echo chamber in the name of radical openness. “There’s a risk,” he says, “that it does just become an outlet for a lot of people who feel grievances about identity politics and political correctness.”

      Apparently this was the old ploy to start the lefty, have the other manager write his right-handed hitting lineup and then immediately bring in the “real” right-handed starter. I know we sneer at “unwritten rules” but I consider that BS and hope it fails horribly.

        I don’t mind it. It’s somewhere between the hidden ball trick and bunting to beat the shift on the baseball strategery spectrum.

          Between bullpenning,launch angles, and shifts, I wonder if in a decade the profile of the ideal hitter will be a switch hitter with great bat control, sort of an Ichiro type with more consistent power.

            Along those lines, a player who isn’t a star, and isn’t a catcher, had better be able to play more than one defensive position. As Roberts has changed his lineup to adapt to Counsell’s gamesmanship with the pitching, only two of the Dodgers’ seven infielders and outfielders are at the same position where they started the game (Turner 3B and Machado SS).

          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Oct 17,2018 3:26 pm || Up

            An Ichiro type with more consistent power would indeed be a very useful player.

      • Soaker Soaker Oct 17,2018 3:55 pm || Up

        One run on three hits through five innings is not “failing horribly” so credit to Counsell. He came pretty close to forcing Roberts to pull Kershaw for a pinch hitter in the fifth.

          And/or higher walls. Less overlap between where fans can reach and where the fielder can reach, and since the fielder can’t extend far enough to really reach back into the stands it avoids that ambiguity. Plus, just as a matter of principle, you should have to jump (or climb a wall) to rob a HR ball.

      Best bit: He says when Korach was sick, the team didn’t want to put anyone in the booth with Vince…

      After a number of conversations, and constant pleading, they finally gave Roxy and Guy some opportunities, but it wasn’t easy. I even had to battle over a situation where a one-man broadcast was scheduled to happen again in Texas as part of a three game series against the Rangers. The team finally bent, and gave the green light for Roxy to step in, all he had to do was cover his own flight, hotel, and food.

    • andeux andeux Oct 18,2018 7:24 pm || Up

      I read (most of) that earlier. Sounds like your impressions were similar to mine:
      His main point at the beginning is harsh, but true: the A’s just don’t have the fan base to carry a station the way the Giants do.
      And some parts (if true) really do make the A’s management (on the business side) look bad: cheap, petty, often self-defeating.
      But he also seems to be trying to justify a lot of his/95.7’s own mistakes or bad behavior.
      My counterpoints would be:
      – A team’s relationship with its flagship station should be symbiotic; the fanbase can grow if the station helps promote the team. That doesn’t mean (as he strawmans) never criticizing the team, or completely ignoring the Giants. But it would have been nice to feel like the station was in some way invested in the A’s success. Despite what he says, it doesn’t seem like 95.7 really tried to do that, even at the beginning. (No, adding Chris Townsend to broadcasts would not help.)
      – Some of the disputes with the A’s were clearly a result of the team feeling not supported in that way.
      – Even given SF’s bigger fanbase, trying to out-Giants KNBR does not seem like a winning strategy to me.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Oct 19,2018 10:16 am || Up

        This part is pretty telling in the context of everything else:

        When I moved to the Bay Area in June 2011, the station had been rushed on to the air with the A’s as a focal point. A 4-year agreement had been reached with the team, so I understood this was a long term play. We were a new radio station trying to gain fans, so it made sense to have a professional franchise on the air providing us with daily content seven months out of the year, and providing marketing inside the stadium, tickets, interviews, all of the usual stuff you’d expect a sports station to have.

        Meanwhile, if you sat inside the building I was in, and looked at what you were up against, it was hard to see any path to victory by focusing on the A’s. KNBR’s teams won, and produced big ratings, the A’s did not. More times than not their game numbers were equal to or lower than the station’s talk shows. TV ratings and quarter hour segments provided a similar story.

        It was a “long term” play not in the sense that they hoped to build a long relationship and help grow the audience for A’s baseball together, but in the sense that they could use the A’s out of necessity to give the station some credibility during the launch but otherwise pretend they don’t exist outside of game broadcasts. It was never a “long term play” in the sense that they would do anything but ignore the team entirely if the ratings weren’t as good as talking about NFL free agency or something.

      • doctorK doctorK Oct 19,2018 4:26 pm || Up

        Bringing in Aubrey Huff to troll A’s fans on the morning show was not a move geared towards endearing the station to the A’s.

        Once 95.7 The Lame took on the Warriors, the A’s were basically forgotten (on a side note, I truly hope the W’s win again this season, and the immediately crash and burn once they move to their new arena next year).

    • lenscrafters Oct 19,2018 8:09 am || Up

      My takeaway from this is that there’s really no other way forward for the A’s than to buy and develop their own station. Any other independent sports radio station is unlikely to take a different approach than 95.7 did given the huge interest disparity between the A’s and every other sports team in this market.

      And yes that requires Fisher to be ok with a short term loss.

      • vignette17 Oct 19,2018 9:21 am || Up

        This and the A’s really, really need to make deep playoff runs while the Giants suck. His biggest self affirmation was that 95.7 “forgot” about the 2012 Giants when doing stories about the 2012 A’s and that cost them big time.

    Where better to enjoy the first few innings than the Angry Beaver in Corvallis during Happy Hour? GO BEARS!

    • Soaker Soaker Oct 19,2018 7:53 pm || Up

      The streets are named sequentially after Presidents. Washington Ave., then Adams Ave., then Jefferson Ave., etc. except the duplicates. The Angry Beaver was at Jefferson but I’m staying a little way out of downtown, at Garfield. I was walking, started to feel the liquid effect of the beer, looked around and saw I was at Buchanan, and decided I was good to go to Garfield. Boy were there a lot of crap presidents either side of Lincoln.

      My opinion of Corvallis has never changed much. It’s OK but still more of a farm town, bigger than Pullman/Moscow and not nearly as isolated, but without getting into the merits of the two schools, if it’s a college town in the Willamette Valley I’m looking for there’s a much more interesting one 40 miles to the south.

          What validates this trip beyond a football game between two lousy teams is a chance to visit a couple areas I haven’t done more than pass through on summer vacations, as I start to think a few years ahead about life after Tahoe. Corvallis is not on the list, as if I landed here I would definitely be thinking “Why am I here instead of down in Eugene?” (which I do enjoy, and that’s a strong contender).

          The areas of attention over the next few days are far northern Oregon Coast (Cannon Beach to Astoria) and also Olympia, WA. Once you’re done with crowded, expensive metropolitan areas there’s no going back so Portland and Seattle are long gone.

              Probably yes and mostly yes. There aren’t a lot of older full-time residents at Tahoe; a mild winter is fine but a severe one does become physically onerous. When I bought the townhouse I figured I would be there for about 10 years. That was spring of 2013, so it has been 5-1/2 years and that’s still the likely schedule.
