Brings a whole new meaning to the s’more.
The only three games of the season that don’t mean a thing. Revel in the boringness with me.
Sorry, no reveling here, I’m watching the Fighting Eds in Boulder and obviously the Golden Bears tomorrow night.
Fucla isn’t quite as bad as their record, which is about to be 0-4, but Cal has them at home this season and that needs to be a win.
Cal is in the Top 25? That seems a little premature.
The Bears won on the road in Provo, and BYU has road wins at Arizona and Wisconsin. The ranking makes sense based on September results but realistically I’m looking at 4-5 in the Pac 12 and the Cheez It Bowl.
Technically the Yankees haven’t won yet but whatever.
Still not over.
Now it is.
Good job Lou
he gonna go for 2?
No, he’ll get another inning Sunday they said, though not as opener (I assume).
I’d like it if Khris could somehow hit three more homers while also dropping his average to .247.
3 grand slams, and 16 ground ball outs that score runs
just so we have the maths right for this weekend
Tired: Playoff racesWired: Khris Davis going for a record fourth consecutive season with the same batting averageNeeds to finish with one hit in 3/4/5 at-bats, or two hits in 7/8/9 at-bats.https://t.co/LBzSvaw9Ud pic.twitter.com/ykYatjG6Gy— Ben Lindbergh (@BenLindbergh) September 29, 2018

In 2014, he was hitting .247 as late as 9/20. Had he sat out the series at Cincinnati, he would have ended the year with it
Still at .247 right now.
If he can avoid any more hits tonight he has to sit tomorrow.
Thank goodness his slugging is not so consistent.
not you ken!!
its the fighters, not the ham fighters, if you are using US naming conventions.
Except it’s like a billion times more fun to say Ham Fighters.
so, not fiers?
and can we have multiple abs for beau taylor?
Leaning strongly toward bullpen game
Meaningless or not an A’s hit would be nice.
As would Fiers not getting lit up.
I am pro mike trout home runs
It’s fine. It’s all fine.
Stealing down five is extreme meaninglessness
Sure. No-hit us. It’s meaningless!!
It’s a Kiekhefer kind of night.
It’s also pretty Aaron Brooksy.
Just quit that nonsense and go play instructional league.
Looks like Kyler Murray will NOT start vs Baylor due to a disciplinary issue. @OU_Football will go with Austin Kendall to begin and it is not known how much Murray will sit during this game. #Sooners pic.twitter.com/AbPXxpFhaw— Stadium (@WatchStadium) September 29, 2018

This Chelsea-Liverpool match is fantastic.
Is anyone thinking of going to the Treehouse for the Wild Card game watch party? Or another gathering spot for a FKup? (I have bad memories from Triple Rock from the last one, but I know it is convenient for several of us.) Maybe Cornerstone?
I have softball so probably no FKup for me.
Not the treehouse, but a downtown bar would be fun.
OK, I’ll let you know where we end up.
I think I need to watch with the kids. They’ve gotten very into it.
Yeah. We were at a restaurant yesterday and my daughter decided to root for the Rockies–after some uncertainty–because purple. Then she said “we definitely know we want the A’s to win tomorrow!”
Anachronistic and not without sad associations, still, it’s pretty fucking neat to get a sheet of tickets for the A’s straight through the World Series.
I’m rooting for the Brewers & Cubs finishing tied and the Dodgers & Rockies tied. That would be some interesting playoffing prior to the wild card game.
Would those games happen simultaneously?
No idea. I’d imagine not. But it could be interesting with the Braves having a near identical record, it could determine where they start their series.
I don’t think it would affect the Braves unless game 163 counts for breaking ties for home field (I assume it doesn’t, but not totally sure). The Braves are guaranteed to play the Dodgers or Rockies, and they lose the tiebreak to both on head-to-head.
I thought game 163 did count as regular season, including for tie-breaking purposes.
If the Braves have a lower record than the Dodgers/Rockies, they have to go to however wins that game to start their series.
Sure seems like they are planning to go with the opener on Wednesday.
Yep, the plan is for Cahill to come in after Hendriks.— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) September 29, 2018

I’m definitely a little worried about Trevor pitching at Yankee Stadium
That tweet is talking about today. I’m still guessing Jackson (whether starting or coming in later) on Wednesday.
Yeah that’s my guess now too. Fiers living up in the zone in NY is fairly terrifying after yesterday.
In theory, Anderson should still be a candidate (shout out mikeA) because he gets ground balls.
In practice, he is Brett Anderson.
I wouldn’t even have him on that roster. Because he’s Brett Anderson.
I imagine they’ll leave a bunch of “starters” off the roster. Even though teams get a full roster remake after the WC, my past recollection is most have kept their usual rotation guys among the 25 active. I doubt the A’s feel that kind of sentimentality.
Slusser is suggesting they might do a full bullpen game, without using any of the regular starters. That seems risky. You’re counting on none of the relievers you use having an off day, and even on a good day our 6th or 7th best relievers aren’t exactly great.
Hendriks (1) Petit (2+) Trivino (1+) Rodney (1) Familia (1) Treinen (2+extras)
Kelley as fireman.
I dunno, having a Fiers or EJax or even Cahill or Mengden in for 2-3 of those innings feels like it reduces the margin of error.
Agreed. Especially to avoud having to stick with someone if they just dont have it. (RODNEY)
I’d rather have any of the five starters take an inning or two over Rodney, and I’d probably prefer most of them to Petit.
Innings 1,8,9 are accounted for with Hendriks and Trienen. Beyond that I dunno. I agree that trying to get 3 out of a starter seems like a better idea than a full bullpen game.
If Trivino and Familia has dominant innings, hopefully they can pitch a second.
I would say that the last time I was this unoptimistic about the A’s in the playoffs, they won their only series in the BB era so…who knows what’ll happen.
My glass is more than half fuller than most folks, but I can’t imagine I’ll ever be as unoptimistic as 2014.
This. 2014 I kept hoping the light switch would flip and we would get 3 early season weeks, but I knew it was a lost cause. I especially remember hoping they saved Sonny for the WC game because he was the only one I trusted at that point.
I still believed because Lester = ZOMG biggest big game pitcher, but of course that didn’t work out.
Ray genuinely offended that everyone has an eclair but him. Randomly blames Bartolo.
Lifetime member of Team Dynamite Jim Johnson to you.
Last night slegnA was honoring Trput for some reason and they informed us he was 1 SB away from 9nce again reaching 30 HR…and 25 SB.
That isnt how any of this works!
he is part of the prestigious 29/23 club
Note to self: update advance directive in case Rodney appears in WC game.
this is a very long article teased with a picture of the A’s with the sole A’s content coming at the end this this nut:
It doesn’t account for the whole difference, but on July 4, Matt Joyce (.203/.311/.359) made his last start of the season until September 25. Subsequent left fielders have been much superior with the bat. If the A’s have experienced a miracle, it was that of Matt Joyce’s Back, which is not a miracle at all.
Synchronized game start times isn’t enough for me. I need synchronized inning start times.
Anyone not watching missed Beau Taylor’s first hit. Also him faceplanting in between first and second.
Is Hatcher trying to get Lowrie another AB?
FK you Hatcher, one last time.
or thank you hatcher for dropping the angels behind the phillies in draft order. they will be 15th
One last time… Come on blow a save with me One last time… And if we get this right We’re gonna teach ’em how to watch it fly, watch it fly You and I…
Impressive end to Hatcher’s A’s career.
The Dodgers ended up 16 expected wins ahead of the Rockies.
Well that was one of the uglier football games I’ve seen.
I was looking at how often 97 wins would have failed to get the first wild card (or only wild card from 1996-2011). I started in 1996 because 1995 was a short season.
It has happened once in the two wild card era: 2015: Pirates 98 wins for first WC, Cubs 97 wins for second WC
There were only three times from 1996-2011 when the wild card had >97 wins: 2004: Red Sox 98 wins (A’s first team out with 91 wins) 2002: Angels 99 wins (Red Sox and Mariners first teams out with 93 wins each) 2001: A’s 102 wins (Twins first team out with 85 wins)
The A's pitching staff for the Wild Card Game will likely include Hendriks, Treinen, Familia, Rodney, Trivino, Buchter, Kelley, Petit, Pagan and Wendelken, plus one starter, for a total of 11.— Jane Lee (@JaneMLB) September 30, 2018

God help us if we have to use Pagan.
Jackson I guess? Fiers inspired 0 confidence in being a 2nd inning man on Friday.
Yeah, Jackson is still my guess. I’d be inclined to take a second starter or long man, even Montas or Bassitt, rather than Pagan or Rodney, but hopefully this game does not come down to the 10th or 11th pitcher.
We’ll find out whether Laureano can pitch in the 14th inning.
Plausible, but it doesn’t explicitly say that they’re using a reliever to start.
