He probably said something generic like “maybe it doesn’t hurt after all” would be my guess. Something totally forgettable but in the moment, after watching how he initially reacted, would cause them to laugh at him.
I’ve been thinking about this and I reckon it’s Melvin indulging his old school side. Give Mengden the peeved not-a-starter lately the chance to get a W in the “clinching” game. Same reason he’ll let Treinen close tonight no matter how big the lead gets.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Just thinking back to how drab it felt entering the wild card game in 2014, compared to whatever’s about to happen, and this is eons better. Great fucking year, great fucking team.
God so much this! I didnt think I would feel the way I felt about the 2012 team again, but this has been a joy. At least once a week I remind myself to love this ride and whatever happens over the next month they cant take it away.
(And I will be throwing things at my TV if we arent leading by 15 in the WC game, but still…)
Guy sitting behind me on Friday night said, after Semien fouled the ball off his leg, “that looked like Jermaine Dye.” I nearly dropped my Ballast Point in anger.
I’m trying to decide if I should spring for WC game tickets in NY. On one hand, there’s hardly a more iconic duo than the A’s and elimination game heartbreak. And dealing with that with 40K smug Yankees fans in person would be terrible.
On the other hand, this team does feel different and they deserve support in person, win or lose.
Go. Expect heartbreak. And when they win, feel happy to have been there. And when they lose, try not to get addressed hitting Yankee fans in their obnoxious faces.
I entered the lottery for Cleveland playoff tickets. Now all I need is: A’s beat Yankees, A’s beat Red Sox, Indians beat Astros, successful lottery draw for ALCS tickets.
The last time I went to a Cleveland playoff game, they satisfyingly beat the Red Sox but when I got home I discovered that my cat escaped (we found her after about an hour of panic)
I think that thing is still in my house somewhere. She passed off the Youkilis doll to a White Sox fan after he was traded (who hopefully burned it after dousing in holy water).
Get Trivino into some low pressure spots to try to get him going again. Let Treinen, Familia, and Rodney rest until Saturday-Sunday when they each get an inning or two to stay sharp.
Exactly. Hell, I’d make sure they’re only getting low pressure spots to stay sharp. I still have faith in Trivino, but he has some kinks to work out. Now is a good time for him to do that. The others are just suffering from overuse. Our offense is fine, but man our pitching is showing the signs of wear and tear from having no starters and a 162 game season. I honestly don’t think we’d have held up for another month if the regular season had another 30 games in it.
As with many things it is not clearly documented.
It looks like my member prices for first deck is $80/ticket (or possibly $60) for WC/ALDS, $85/ticket for ALCS, $220/ticket for WS. Not great seats (section 129).
IIRC second deck prices were very similar, which may be a better deal.
And these are advertised as saving “at least 20%.”
I was told the discount rate on the pay-as-you-go seats (which you get in the same number as the seats you purchase for 2019) varies based upon member level (i.e. bigger package = bigger discount).
My understanding of the pre-pay strips is that they are the same as the public price, we just get priority access.

Hero story of the day: In 20 minutes my friend and I just got my 30 year old Toyota pickup running after it hadn’t moved in more than 6 years. That truck is just amazing.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
My new goal is to have it running for an A’s home playoff game. BTW Game 3 of the ALDS is on Monday October 8, a holiday thenceforth to be known as Tailgate A’s Fuck Day.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."

i have no idea what to do to get rid of a car. what are my options, if there are any that help me get any amount of money, even minimal, rather than pay it out?
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
A tax deduction wouldn’t mean anything to me because with no state income tax I don’t itemize. If I were getting rid of a junker Pick N Pull would be my best option and I’d just have to figure out the cheapest way to get it to them.
I was kidding re K4K. Most of those charity cat donations rake huge% for their admin. Plus they usually don’t take low value cars (despite what they say).
Junkyards are the original recyclers/re-users.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
It’s Hatcher Time! I’m fine with a loss tonight and the Yankees winning tonight or tomorrow, which would prevent Bob from working Treinen hard in Anaheim in a likely-futile attempt at gaining a home game on Wednesday. The flight from New York to Boston is nice and short anyway. The early look at weather in New York in the middle part of next week shows dry and mild.
I’d like them to get the home game but not at the expense of overusing anyone. It’s far more important to get these guys rest. If we were talking the difference between a play-in and full series it would be different, but that single game is far more important than where it’s played.
Tonight’s game is the A’s final game ever at Safeco Field, as that naming rights deal wasn’t renewed beyond this year. Costco Yards? Amazon Field? Dick’s Drive In Park? The world awaits.
I really wish they’d stop this sort of thing. Names mean something and all this name swapping drives me nuts. Make it Griffey Field at T-Mobile Pavilion or something.
Looking at the bright side from the Mariners’ point of view, they only owe Felix $27 million more. He’s 10-and-5 so even if somebody were somehow interested he could turn it down.
I always think of the guy on the left but it applies to the one on the right too.
They are the top two in the category of most strikeouts by a lefthander in American League history.
1. 2853 – Sabathia
2. 2679 – Lolich
3. 2669 – Frank Tanana
4. 2545 – Randy Johnson
5. 2527 – Chuck Finley (I would have needed a lot of guesses before I got to him)
They really went and booked a prosecutor from L&O SVU Arizona on taskrabbit and told her to cross-examine the victim, just to solve for having nothing but dudes, some of whom are Ted Cruz.
Got my A’s Access tix for WC and two DS games. It’s all a la carte, let’s you pick any section for each game individually, varying locations and #s by game. For instance, I got 2 WC tix in Sec 123, 4 ALDS Home Game 1 tix in 215, and 2 ALDS Home Game 2 tix in 120.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I’m regretting buying the strips. $75 for field infield, and $65 for plaza infield are much better deals than what I got ($60 for field level way out in the outfield). Oh well.
I now realize that the purchases I listed above are in addition to the 2 tix per game default, not in place of. And since the default ones are worse seats (104 row 26) than the ones I a la carted, I’ll likely resell the defaults and use the a la cartes
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
At least we know the start time of ALDS Game 4 on Tuesday 10/9 would be 5:00 or 5:30. Harder to say on Monday 10/8 because those are ALDS Game 3/NLDS Game 4 days. Either the Dodgers or Rockies could be playing at home, possibly even both of them, or the NLDS could be over. If four games are being played that day, the start times would be something like 9 (Cleveland), noon, 3:30 and 7. I don’t think they would have the Red Sox start at 10 p.m. Eastern time so I’d put Red Sox-A’s at 3:30. If one of the NL series is over then it’s probably Cleveland at 10, the remaining NL series at 1:30 and Oakland at 5.
Checking this, the Red Sox would have to play the late game on Monday if all three other games are in the Eastern and Central time zones. This would happen if all three of these are true:
1. Neither NLDS ends in a sweep.
2. The NL West winner has home field advantage vs. Atlanta. Both the Dodgers and Rockies won their season series vs. Atlanta so that’s quite possible.
3. If either the Dodgers or the Rockies is one of the wild cards, they lose the wild card game (or, both wild cards come out of the NL Central).
As of yesterday, there were some tickets for Game 3 in sections 117 and 118 very close to our front row seats for about 100 a pop. I should have snapped them up even though I probably can’t go.
Holy cow. CC smoked Sucre and cost himself a half million dollars, got ejected from the game, then appeared to grab his crotch while facing the Rays dugout.
Sabathia hit a Ray (Bauers). First pitch of next inning was one of those nasty behind-the-head fastballs to Romine with benches warned. It looked like Sabathia decided to show the Rays how to do a proper intentional HBP. The $500K was because by being ejected he fell just short of an innings pitched contract bonus.
Great find in the Yankees’ luxury tax details: The Yankees did indeed pay CC Sabathia a $500,000 bonus despite him missing his innings target because he wanted to call someone a bitch. https://t.co/fp8NHtwRsj
Discussion I heard last night(?) is that Yankees plan to use Tanaka for the WC game and use Happ in game 1 against Boston (if they get there). In three starts against the Red Sox this season, Happ has a 0.54 ERA.
Brett Kavanaugh is telling the senators that his mom was the local prosecutor when he was in high school. That's when the alleged assault occurred. It's a reminder of the privileged position he held back then & another reason Dr. Ford might have been reluctant to come forward.
I didn’t know that. But fuck that guy. Looking at his face while he rages on, there’s nothing believable about it. He looks like a man who’s angry at being caught.
i’ll back off a bit. She was a little better than useless. she wasted 4 minutes and got one good unforced error answer out of her last question. The good part was knowing that was an error and almost literally dropping the mic. that is a tough thing to do when you ahve more to ask. I have both stopped at that point and continued.

Now we deluge em all.
Don’t remember when I saw so many A’s fans at a road game. Impressive!
I love starting Mengden. With that windup and stache I swear we picked him up from some 1974 American Association team.
Though given it meant the Yankees winning, I’d rather have waited.
how do you walk dee gordon?
Dee Gordon: Plate appearance #579, base on balls #9. That’s Rob Picciolo country.
Nice game for Lucroy so far.
Warming up for his role as Gene Tenace in the World Series.
Jed got into that one.
I hope that’s just the one where you get up for the 3 a.m. pee and bash the shit out of your little toe.
Or catch it on the square piece of moulding sticking out on the top of the stairs.
I really want to know what Mengden said that cracked everyone up. I’m imagining something self-deprecating about his dramatic reaction.
Not sure if he said anything, but that was the joke
He probably said something generic like “maybe it doesn’t hurt after all” would be my guess. Something totally forgettable but in the moment, after watching how he initially reacted, would cause them to laugh at him.
is bobby keilty going to catch the last out here?
Yes
(Khrushed)
how do you allow a HR to dee gordon?
walks, HRs? Dee gordon is a monster
All the games Melvin was Capt Hook and he leaves Mengden in extra long after that line drive?
I’ve been thinking about this and I reckon it’s Melvin indulging his old school side. Give Mengden the peeved not-a-starter lately the chance to get a W in the “clinching” game. Same reason he’ll let Treinen close tonight no matter how big the lead gets.
Which I agree with. I was very happy he stayed in for the 5th. But I was really surprised to see him out for the 6th.
Home run balls look so pretty disappearing against that super-black batter’s background.
Night games at Safeco have a moody look that I really enjoy. Not sure if it is the colors of the place, the LED lighting, or what, but I’m a fan.
Think you can get away with hitting Olsen in the foot? Hah!
Just wait till you see the replay reviews in the wild card game when TBS has a Red Sox-Yankees Division Series at stake.
Even though they’ve already clinched, the A’s should do a playoff celebration on Seattle’s field after every game this series.
They should do it every year, really.
Man watching the A’s drench themselves in champagne will never ever get old.
(And I will be throwing things at my TV if we arent leading by 15 in the WC game, but still…)
Yes, great season, and it will still be great if/when they lose the wild card game in spectacular fashion.
And here to throw out the first pitch is Gil Heredia!
Guy sitting behind me on Friday night said, after Semien fouled the ball off his leg, “that looked like Jermaine Dye.” I nearly dropped my Ballast Point in anger.
I still haven’t recovered from 2014.
Oh man I say go if you possibly can.
yeah, if you can, go. Its all gravy from here
Turns out ours may not have been the best advice.
Happy ending!
For the record I ended up having a watch party with some friends in the city. It was difficult to convince people to stay past the 6th inning.
Go. Expect heartbreak. And when they win, feel happy to have been there. And when they lose, try not to get addressed hitting Yankee fans in their obnoxious faces.
Definitely go. But don’t spend so much that you can’t also spend the weekend at Fenway.
Probably because the evil Pedroia doll came to life.
I think that thing is still in my house somewhere. She passed off the Youkilis doll to a White Sox fan after he was traded (who hopefully burned it after dousing in holy water).
Dallas may have forgotten he’s not on the roster any more.
matt chapman said “fucking” on the radio
It will be interesting to see who is in the lineup tonight and who is “getting a scheduled day off”.
Chapman survives; Piscotty and Khris, hmmm
I’m surprised more regulars aren’t sitting but I guess the home WC game still lures. Early nights off for Semien and Lowry seem in order.
I think they can now give up on that one. Time to rest the entire pitching staff for sure. They’re way too worn down right now to be reliable.
Have they shown the playoff ticket prices to the members access folks yet? You get to buy the strip, right?
As with many things it is not clearly documented.

Good info. I’ll be logging in to the open buy on Friday and was preparing myself for the sticker shock.
So much for investing any hope in the Rays. That game next Wednesday is in the Bronx.
We only need them to lose three games. Still possible if Boston is trying.
OK now it’s over.
I toured safeco this summer. I was in the visitors locker room. It was kinda neat watching them in a room where I have pictures.

last time I was at a game three, brett anderson pitched to a 2-0 victory
I couldn’t figure out how that was until I remembered the awful 2-3 Div Series format they had then.
That was a good game, big part of turning Nurse Upgrade from a casual ally fan to an ardent green-n-gold believer.
So you put fresh gas in?
Thanks, and go As.
Nope! Old gas even worked. Just had to bang on starter solenoid a bit.

Junk yards like Pick n Pull will pay you something for the parts/scrap value, and handle the towing.

please don’t encourage cars with a k for kids.
I did KALW once and cars for cats once.
I also called a jnkyard once.
How about this one?
come to think of it I think Ray did mention cars on the A’s community fund spot.
The A’s apparently do have some affiliated program, or used to. The links don’t work.
A tax deduction wouldn’t mean anything to me because with no state income tax I don’t itemize. If I were getting rid of a junker Pick N Pull would be my best option and I’d just have to figure out the cheapest way to get it to them.

Yeah I don’t need to see any more Anderson, like, ever.
I’m still aboard the maybe start Anderson in the WC game train.
Also Rodney.
This definitely looks like a 19-pitcher, 4.5-hour affair.
Going to the 18th pitcher, only about 3:40 so far though.
This “wear their pitchers down” approach is just inexorable.
1. WOO A’S
2. FK you, Rodney
Rounding into A’s postseason form, I see.
I’ve been thinking a costly Chapman error or a Treinen blown save were likely scenarios for the WC game. Maybe this will preempt it.
Sometimes Soaker day never comes.
What the hell, I’ll offer the “glad he got the blown save out of the way now” take. Also come on A’s let’s pick Treinen up here.
Oh, also the leading after 7 thing. Virtual lock to blow the WC game leading after 7 if that streak is still intact.
Yep.
{cough}gary anderson{cough}
Well, that was disappointing.
Laureano and Chapman off tonight. Yawn.
It’s Hatcher Time! I’m fine with a loss tonight and the Yankees winning tonight or tomorrow, which would prevent Bob from working Treinen hard in Anaheim in a likely-futile attempt at gaining a home game on Wednesday. I LOVE EATING DICKS FOR LUNCH!!
When I managed a team in Seattle they loved telling me that.
I lived down the street from dicks for years.
When I went in the summer, My favorite thing to ask my friends “YOU LIKE DICKS?”
“T-Mobile Field” (or “T-Mobile Park” or something like that)
I really wish they’d stop this sort of thing. Names mean something and all this name swapping drives me nuts. Make it Griffey Field at T-Mobile Pavilion or something.
for those of you so inclined…
Looking at the bright side from the Mariners’ point of view, they only owe Felix $27 million more. He’s 10-and-5 so even if somebody were somehow interested he could turn it down.
so, not anderson, not cahill, not jackson, not fiers…Hendricks?

I saw Gil a couple times this year. He was the pitching coach for the Reno Aces.
Braden should be well rested.

Korach last night referred to Vogelbach as “the chunky lefty.”
I always think of the guy on the left but it applies to the one on the right too.
They are the top two in the category of most strikeouts by a lefthander in American League history.
1. 2853 – Sabathia
2. 2679 – Lolich
3. 2669 – Frank Tanana
4. 2545 – Randy Johnson
5. 2527 – Chuck Finley (I would have needed a lot of guesses before I got to him)
Here’s one only you and I remember:
In 1971 through 1974, he and Lolich each threw over 300 innings all four years.
Fat tub of Goo
We dont seem very interested in winning
Wendelkin?
Ken said Melvin thinks “he could be next year’s Trivino”.
They really went and booked a prosecutor from L&O SVU Arizona on taskrabbit and told her to cross-examine the victim, just to solve for having nothing but dudes, some of whom are Ted Cruz.
That was their strategy.
If the same thing happens when we get to WS and you are looking to resell start with your FK brothers and sisters pls…
They were super flexible with me just now. I got bad pay-as-you-go Tix, but they moved them to make a block of 4 in the Plaza Infield (222/2!)
Hilariously, I had to pay for a WC game and 3 ALDS games on the pay-as-you-go tickets, despite the current situation.
First few rows of Plaza level are not great because of the railing.
The inflation rate doesn’t sound too bad. Looking at my 2013 records I was in 219 and 215 for ALDS Games 1 and 2 and those were face value $55 each.
Thanks for the reminder, I just got us some tickets for ALDS Game 1, and coincidentally we’re also in 215.
Last year Monday 10/9 the games were 1, 4, 7 and 10 EDT (10, 1, 4, 7 PDT).
Do they really change game times based on other series ending the day before? Ugh.
I notice Field Infield for Game 3 has gone from $75 to $80 since this morning (for the few remaining singles). Game 4 is still $75.
As of yesterday, there were some tickets for Game 3 in sections 117 and 118 very close to our front row seats for about 100 a pop. I should have snapped them up even though I probably can’t go.
I’ve already exceeded my 2018 baseball travel budget but fuck that, postseason games are memorable (1990 World Series being a big exception).
My tickets for Game 5 of that series are still sitting somewhere, unused.
Yankees’ magic number is going to be 1 in an hour or so. Those Wild Card tickets will be in the refund queue.
Sweeping the Angels is doable. Expecting the Red Sox to do the same of the Yankees, sadly not so much. C’est le vie.
What’s the story behind this?
Sabathia hit a Ray (Bauers). First pitch of next inning was one of those nasty behind-the-head fastballs to Romine with benches warned. It looked like Sabathia decided to show the Rays how to do a proper intentional HBP. The $500K was because by being ejected he fell just short of an innings pitched contract bonus.
And he was two innings away from hitting a $500,000 contract incentive.
Sorry, I edited because I realized that was probably a big part of the question.
NY could let him throw two relief innings this weekend if they wanted to reward his “toughness”.
Tanaka or Happ for Wednesday.
Discussion I heard last night(?) is that Yankees plan to use Tanaka for the WC game and use Happ in game 1 against Boston (if they get there). In three starts against the Red Sox this season, Happ has a 0.54 ERA.
Well if I hate the Red Sox that much, they can lend him to us for the ALDS.
WRONG
Hopefully the Severino/Sanchez battery is as productive for us as it was the last time.
FINGERS CROSSED / KNOCK ON WOOD

“revenge on behalf of the Clintons”
wow
I didn’t realize Sabathia was such a big Clinton supporter, although I suppose with the Bay Area roots it makes sense.
