Games 125-127: Bye Bye Beltre? 121

Beltre is out of the lineup tonight with a hamstring issue, and his comments today suggest he’s leaning toward hanging ’em up. The Rangers do still have one more series in Oakland after this one.

The Rangers have been pounding the ball since the All Star Break. They scored 24 runs in that last 4 game series against the A’s, but as the pitching probables suggest they have issues on the mound. Rougned Odor is particularly hot at .360/.427/.693 in 28 games since the break.

Tonight at 7:05: Fiers vs. Colon
Tuesday at 7:05: Anderson vs. undecided Ariel Jurado
Wednesday at 12:35: Jackson vs. undecided Mike Minor. This is the first of two games where the live video is exclusively on something called “Facebook Watch”, which I know nothing about and don’t intend to find out about.

I keep going back and forth on who I’m rooting for in the other game. Started rooting for the Astros when the Rangers had 2 on with no outs, sort of rooting for the Mariners now. Probably should be rooting for the Astros regardless.

We really need some pictures of Lucroy’s locker room gallery.

There’s a card that the team made for rookie pitcher Lou Trivino back in June, when he gave up his first home run. You’ve Still Got It, Babe, the loopy script reads, complete with an illustration of a ball leaving the yard.

Weird things about this KD season:

    1. His BABIP is only .274, which would be his second lowest career number (.270 in 2016). Last season he had his highest BABIP ever, at .290.
    2. His HR/FB is the lowest of his career (23.7%, compared to 26.9% last year).
    3. He’s walking less than last season (8.6% compared to 11.2% last year).

His success this year seems to derive from cutting down on his Ks (25.1%, the lowest number he has put up since leaving Milwaukee) and hitting more fly balls (48.4%, up from 42.3% last year and 40.2% in 2016 — he never cracked 40% in Milwaukee).

Say things go badly enough for the GOP in November that the Democrats get at least one house, particularly if it’s the Senate. Do the Republicans then decide they’re better off getting rid of that ball and chain? And on the other side, perhaps the Democrats think he’s a useful punching bag to keep around for two more years.

      • andeux andeux Aug 21,2018 4:31 pm || Up

If the Dems win the Senate and the GOP keep the House (I think that scenario is very unlikely), I can’t see the Paul Ryan or whoever letting a vote to impeach happen.
If the Dems win the House, but the GOP keeps the Senate, it’s an interesting question – knowing that the Senate will probably not convict, does the House still impeach, either out of principle (ha!) or as political theater? I would think so.
If the Dems win both houses, impeachment seems like a foregone conclusion.

On one hand, Senate control doesn’t matter much for whether impeachment would succeed — you need 67 votes so control just means one fewer republican needed.

On the other hand, it could matter a lot, because the constitution doesn’t on its face require the Senate to hold a trial when the House impeaches. It just says “The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments.” Not that hard to see McConnell saying no trial, and his weak-ass caucus without even a Flake, Corker (or possibly McCain) falling in line.

I think we went to a game at old Three Rivers Stadium as part of a Grateful Dead trip way back when, but I’d love to go to that cool-looking current park. Some interesting nuggets today from Matier and Ross

Mayor Libby Schaaf raised further questions about how such a deal might be financially structured in a private meeting with Oakland business leaders on Friday. According to sources, Schaaf told the group that the city doesn’t have the money to buy out Alameda County’s half-interest in the Oakland Coliseum site to help smooth the way for a possible A’s development there.

City Hall and other sources tell us the A’s firmly favor building at Howard Terminal, but would still like to win the development rights to the Coliseum property, at the very least to help finance what’s increasingly looking like a very expensive waterfront ballpark.
