Title related: I miss the old Fresno State Pepsi/Johnny Quik Best in the West classic. Nothing better than ditching class and going out all day watching college ball.
Game related: I do not miss Altuve going 4-5 against us every game.
I guess nothing happened on the off day to change the offensive inertia.
Is that GM in the black North Face jacket? I will say hi after the game.
at least this is a real pitching staff
Looks like we’re going to be interviewed by Kara in the 6th about the streak.
That was fun!
Excellent job! I’d have been tongue tied.
Hey, I know that guy!
I have a low quality photograph of the event!
Enjoy.
Wow, you weren’t kidding.
I wanted to see what he said. sslinger was fine, but Kara’s “…that infamous 20-game win streak”, umm what? It’s at about 1:58:00.
one is better than nothing?
2 is better than 1. But we really need 3+ there.
Trivino has not looked good recently it seems.
needs the kelley schedule
Kelley looked good.
Caz is Caztastic.
I’m watching this on Gameday, which tells me Pinder’s cold spot is the center of the strike zone?!
Don’t run on Reddick?
why isn’t interference reviewable?
neat
Man I did not expect to win that replay.
You, me, Glen, Dallas…
ken thought maybe, ray thought it was for sure safe, lots of reasons
He looked out live, and safe on slow motion, but yeah. It was close enough to make that a tough overturn.
Calls are allowed to go our way?
Only when it suits the corporate narrative.
phegley for laureano? I would have gone with canha
phegley for laureano? I would have gone with canha
how does guriel play so many positions?
Did they rule the tag was late? I couldn’t tell that from the scoreboard but it did look like not giving a clear path.
i haven’t heard yet
Korach said they were told he beat the tag.
having seen the play now, I agree, maldenado’s knee clearly moves just before impact on the body. his kneww was on the plate giving laureano visible white.
logically, the knee cannot move until laureano has already touched the plate
Right. The glove didn’t actually make contact until about belt level. Of course a better whatever-you-call-a-headfirst-hook-slide would have made it an easy call.
A less-perfect relay would have too.
The play by Correa was unbelievable.
From the front row seats, I thought he was out, but that turned out to be the worst angle because we couldn’t see the point of contact.
speculation in the booth blocking the plate before the ball
fuck yes!
Man. Had to go pick up lil Miss Aces in the 9th. New car has a free XM trial so I got to hear this beautiful mess on the radio. Got back just in ti.e to see the bomb. Wow!
Well that was worth the drive.
good pick. was a good game had they lost in the 9th
Hee hee hee!
astros twitter is very upset
I always feel good when Sipp cones in. Je is one of the last holdovers from those awful Astros teams. And he always litches like it.
Ed, tell Astros Twitter we cant do anything about the drums. #sorry
Well that was fun. And I even met Soaker!
I need to hear the radio call. Glen is so blah.
10th inning…
this
Yeah, I forgot about that. I’ve watched the walkoff several times. The latest video on Mlb.com starts with Vince setting the stage, but switches audio to Glen’s choppy call once the pitch is made. Sigh. Can’t imagine Vince’s call was any better. I haven’t read enough to know, but is anybody else as bothered by Braden’s “Pow town” catch phrase? Dude is seriously on crack.
it was a little better, now having watched the teevee highlight. Glen is not entertaining.
Much fun was had in the treehouse, well worth the night out.
Mr Reddick is unhappy with the review.
he can cry in his world series ring
I freaking love Martini. Crazy that he was on the scrap heap.
that is a handsome fella
He looks like somebody who could give me recommendations for a casual dinner place and a good breakfast cafe in Provo UT (Go Bears!). I know everything is closed Sunday but I’ll be there Friday night so the breakfast rec is for Saturday.
Hruska’s Kolaches on Center Street in Provo. They do savory and sweet kolaches. The sausage egg and cheese one is incredible, as are all the sweet ones. It’s a peppered sausage—so delicious. The earlier you’re there the shorter the wait.
Let me know if you’re looking for something less “grab-and-go.”
I’d meet up with you, but I’ll actually be in Sacramento for my 20-year reunion.
Somehow missed the dinner ask.
Highly recommend Communal. Excellent food, though I’ve only done lunch.
Good Thyme eatery has several options and some decent food. If you don’t mind driving 20 minutes, Cubby’s in Lehi either or American Fork has excellent salads and burgers. Not sure if you’ve ever tried J-Dawg’s, but they’re cheap and have my favorite hot dog ever. They’re in South Provo, Orem and Lehi. Have to get the sauce + kraut + banana peppers. I get relish, onions and the pickle spear.
Asa Ramen in Orem is good if ramen’s your thing (get the tonkotsu).
Speaking of the Bears, have you ever been to Gregoire in Berkeley?
Thanks for the recommendations, I will jot those down. I don’t recall going to Gregoire. It’s been nearly 10 years since I lived down here and I only go into Berkeley for football games anymore; my visits are usually more Coliseum-centric with maybe a hop over to Alameda for breakfast which I did this morning, the Hegenberger Denny’s not really being my thing. Actually Fosse’s favorite, Francesco’s, is now a Black Bear Diner but that’s also more chainey than I care for.
I’ve never been to Provo. It’s a cheap trip even on a football weekend. Certainly walking up to the Y is on the agenda. Doing the Provo brewpub tour, probably not so much.
I didn’t realize the game was actually in September. I’ll actually be back for that if you want to meet up for breakfast.
Yes, September 8, three weekends from now. That would be good. My e-mail address shown via the dashboard here is current.
How much does the kraut cost at J-Dawg’s?
FREE NINETY NINE
He looks so familiar.
Seems pretty clear to me
i did not know that existed. I like it.
Same.
And Glen and Dallas still don’t seem to know about this angle.
Holy shitoli. That fucking game.
Jabroni Ball: what if starting pitching was fungible?
townsend was asking that question a few weeks ago and it would have been an interesting discussion had it not been dripping with talk radio jibber jabber
Wait, what does this question even mean?
extreme bullpenning.
I came out early to sit in the sun and watch BP. The 2002 team is chatting on the field. Billy Koch! Ricardo Rincon! There’s no need to Fear Mecir because he’s on crutches.
Bunt on him.
T.Long may be the leader for most pounds added since his playing days.
Based on the picture below, Ray Durham is up there.
Jermaine Dye still looks fit.
Looks like Cory Lidle’s wife and kid are here too :-(
jeremy giambi was there, but was escorted out
There should be a stack of cases of Pepsi out there somewhere.
Hatteberg got all of the hair.
Im not complaining mind you, but why exactly are we honoring the 16th anniversary?
The cartoon on 2002 shirt of (I think Mabry?) looks exactly like Rosales. Or maybe he was on that team!
He has the bad face.
MaEl!
Man, Hudson looks fitter than half of the active MLB players
RAFs: need some help when you get back tonight.
A friend is considering going up on Sunday and wants a good view and shade. Recommendations on section/row?
first base side gets shady sooner
208-217?
@Aces Right now row 27 is shady in the lower deck behind the plate with a few more rows in the sun as you go down the lines. Same effect in second deck but I can’t really see exact rows.
On opening day, I sat in Section 217, Row 9. Shade the whole day, perfect view.
Sun is a little higher now than in late March though.
Second deck shade line maybe top of vomitories between bases, up to 5-6 rows higher near foul poles.
Ah, a good ole Reddick bat slam
Thanks Soaker
LOL..was just thinking how much I miss Schlong flailing at a pitch low and away and then slamming the bat.
(But still…#dontrunonReddick)
The Fiers trade is now Nolan Blackwood plus a PTBNL or cash.
Just Trevor Cahill dominating the defending champs in 2018. Totally normal things happening.
Soooooo….three-year extension for Cahill?
Not until they pay Krush
I guess the upside of Semien booting that ball and having it called a hit is that Bob wasn’t tempted to leave Cahill in unnecessarily.
Ok, can we close out a big lead without it becoming a clusterfuck and needing everyone up?
Now Marcus doesn’t have to feel too bad.
That was 2005, Ken.
First place!
W00t!
Keep an eye on things for me I’ll be back in a couple weeks.
Happy trails!
The other Best in the West is my old Honolulu Little League, in the Final 16 at the LLWS, play at 11 AM tomorrow vs Grosse Point MI.
Blank Grosse Pointe!
And Hawaii wins it! Only allowed two earned runs in the whole tournament.
Muncied
the dodgers are terrible
Walkoff balk in Seattle
I see United has conceded to Brighton, Hove, and Albion this morning.
Brighton, Hove actually, and Albion.
lot of scioscia face in brighton
I mean, better than martini, yeah?
I’d take Martini if the postseason roster was set today.
Agreed. Never been a huge Joyce fan and have had 0 problens with Martini.
I’ll be in the treehouse today if anyone wants to come out and find me. No promises you’ll get on the teevee.
I hop this awesomeness virus that’s infected our starters has at least 12 more weeks before it’s cured.
Who gave Manaea the penicillin?
I’m the Chaptain now!
oh my
eight doubles yesterday, eight home runs today?
Please keep pummeling Verlander until he drops thanks.
Make him just retire in the 3rd inning.
Chapman and Krush not infected with the virus Verlander normally spreads to A’s hitters when he arrives here.
Who could’ve guessed that setting a perjury trap for your own lawyers would backfire?
The 38° launch angle on Khris’ clout puts it in the Custian realm.
“Khris Davis homers (35) on a pop up to left field.”
Manaea looks skinnier than ever. Did he just stop eating at the all star break?
are we in a time loop?
When Manaea crosses paths with Jerry Blevins the universe may implode.
I am ok with a 7 pitch out by piscotty
Verlander is justified in being upset when they’ve given him a foot or two off the outside of the plate for his entire career.
huh
Tip the cap to Braden for perfectly describing how Verlander was about to scam the ump into giving the outside strike.
He’ll be royally fucked if they ever institute an electronic system.
four extra strikes
Possibly unpopular opinion: while Verlander does benefit from generous strike zones, it isn’t so much that he gets calls that the other pitcher doesn’t, it’s that he’s very good at testing that area a couple inches off the plate, figuring out the limits of what the umpire is giving there, and then taking advantage of it.
ISTR that one of the games when we did beat him in the playoffs a few years back was when the umpire called a tight strike zone for both sides.
the 2013 game 5 i think. i also think that was cb bucknor
Game 2, but yes Bucknor
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/zoneTrack.php?month=10&day=05&year=2013&game=gid_2013_10_05_detmlb_oakmlb_1/&prevDate=1005
And though we still didn’t score off of Verlander, at least it helped get him out of there after 7.
one thing that will never fail verlander is his strike zone
That was one of those sudden wet burps you’re not expecting at all.
There’s some comment in the FK archives where I thought the A’s might non-tender Khris because he wouldn’t be worth what he could get via arbitration. I hope nobody bothers to dig that one up.
I know I had a take like that after one his defensive hiccups last year. I’ve been meaning to slip Nevermoor some cash to delete it.
Andeux prints them all out for his National Free Kraut Archives
I can haz $5?
Feels like a Canha HR day.
Hell, one more HR would make a six pack.
How does it feel?
It now occurs to me that maybe Like A Rolling Stone is Canha’s meta-commentary on Ray Fosse.
Feels not very great, Ray.
This would be a good time for it.
No error but obviously allowing a Maldanado triple requires sub-optimal outfielding.
Canha’s near-averageness in center field has generally been a pleasant surprise though.
Tough play, but Olson made it look even tougher.
Infield in vs Springer (especially given a slow catcher on third) was a very bad idea, glad it didn’t cost them.
The umps in this series have given Astros hitters a couple of very late timeouts. It’s bullshit.
Korach just described a pulled ball as “a great piece of hitting.” I’ve alerted the proper authorities.
Our righties just couldn’t lay off that low and away Peacock slider
I’ve noticed this weekend that the mound visit limitation, not a factor at all for the first 120 games, is going to be more significant as we get into September and postseason.
Canha held it together longer than I expected
If Maldonado hits for the cycle I hope Vince gets to call it in
the 10th inningan even-numbered extra inning. It’s not too late for Pagan to enroll in a fall semester class in Beginning Korean at the local community college.
Speaking of bad takes, I’m not sure if I even posted it here, but going into the season I thought Pagan might end up being our best reliever.
Blah, nobody got hurt, that’s about the best you can say about that game. I’m glad I bugged out of Oakland after yesterday’s game. That said, I wouldn’t be pleased if TEX @ OAK tomorrow night draws 9,000.
I on the other hand chose poorly this time. Bummed that they lost the one I went to (and in sloppy fashion) but can’t really complain about the series outcome over all.
and putting it to verlander, although not as much as detroit.
Might be just shy of 9,000 from the look of it.
Another series won.
This. My friend who is really starting to follow close for the first time was bummed. But I told him if we win 2 out of 3 for the next 2 months we will need time off for the parade.
Did you see Andre at work today? We had a nice day hanging out together in the Treehouse.
I’m about 2400 miles southeast right now.
Florida?
Guatemala City?
And by xoutheast I mean southwest.
And by southwest you mean west-southwest.
I have a condo reserved in Waikoloa in late February, so I’d prefer minimal damage, thanks.
Look you can see me waving.
I’ve always wanted to see a hurricane. We’ll see if it’s as much fun as I’ve hoped.
As long as you’re not stuck there without power for a few days. Shouldn’t happen where you appear to be but those things can take unpredicted turns. My dad and his wife have had to flee their house in St. Augustine, FL for this reason a couple times in the last few years.
Our main affordability strategy on these HI trips is a condo with full kitchen, and now we’re stocked with food that largely could also be made on the gas grill outside if needed. I figure we can hold out 72 hours without power if absolutely necessary.
Oh shit the cable’s out. Head further uphill!
Tom Clark wrote one of the early books on the 1970’s/Finley A’s, Champagne and Baloney.
