Pudge’s kid has an interesting tattoo.
He seems annoyingly likable.
You were supposed hit the next guy, Dereck.
That impudent Canha must pay!
Someone needs to stop Melvin from wearing that ugly shirt with that beautiful cap.
I swear the dugout hoodies get uglier every year.
The ’89 guys looked so good storming out of the dugout in their jackets.
My god, that Puckett/Steinbach collision was some serious business.
Going to the rugby 7s World Cup tomorrow so I’ve been watching some to get prepared. Great comeback by Scotland to beat Kenya, but 2 minute penalty boxes for a yellow in a 7 minute half seems a bit harsh.
was that 1-2 ball call on mccutchen as bad on tv as it was on gameday
The Coliseum record crowd of 56,782 they could draw tomorrow doesn’t stack up historically, with past crowds at the old Cleveland Muni and LA Coliseum into the 90,000s. But that would be more than any current MLB stadium could do. In like three years Oakland went from the smallest capacity in all of baseball to the largest (Mt Davis-added).
The announced paid attendance would usually be a fair amount less than the exact number of seats. Dodger Stadium has a listed capacity of 56,000. In 2012 they announced exactly 56,000 twice and a few more exceeding 55K. Since then, the largest I could find was 54,726 in postseason (2017 NLDS Game 2) and 53,904 regular season (6/26/2018), so we’ll see if the A’s announce something that exceeds those.
Supposedly it’s a sellout.
Yes, but even if they have literally issued a ticket for every seat in the house, some of them are comps which wouldn’t be counted in the paid attendance.
Jeurys Familia huh?
Nope
Well..see comment below. Trivino and Treinen are both going to be dead in a month if Bob thinks he can’t win a game without getting 9 outs from the two of them.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the A’s are being cheap but it seems like they’re still the likely destination.
Hug Watch
I don’t know what this even means.
Jacob deGrom headed to Oakland, if the two sides can finish the deal. – me
I assume we have #hugwatch on Barreto and Luzardo.
for him?
Barreto and Luzardo are headed to Queens if Soaker and andeux can finish the deal.
Like Ed, I still have PTSD about the Samardzija-Hammel trade. It’s like the JFK assassination, where were you when you heard the news? At the time the River Cats were still an A’s affiliate, I was at the Sacramento @ Reno game and the guy next to me was reading it off his phone.
I was standing in my kitchen, having just watched a World Cup game.
I would be so mad.
The reason I still can’t take their contention chances seriously is that Trivino was warming up in the bottom of the 6th with the team down 2-1.
Did anyone not see that coming?
so, Familia slots in here?
We’ll get you an ERA, yet!
I was worried there that young Bleich was about to end his first big league tour without retiring a batter.
The iMac arrived a few days ago and I’m still wrestling with a few things, after >20 years with Windows. This thread finally impelled me to seek out the “scroll to top of thread” keyboard shortcut. I think I’ll be happy in the long run but there’s certainly a learning curve.
Sounds like the Familia thing is going to happen, pending physicals. I’m not sure how I feel about it. Depends who we would be giving up, of course, and I haven’t heard anything reliable on that.
In favor
– As Soaker points out, we’re not going to win 40 more games if Treinen and Trivino have to pitch in all of them.
– A lights-out bullpen has been part of the formula for several teams that have gone deep in the playoffs in the last few years.
Against
– We’re not even in a playoff spot right now, starting pitching is largely smoke and mirrors, and more generally this is a team that is early in the “success cycle.” There’s definitely risk that we give up something valuable for Familia, who’s a free agent after this year, and then end up as a 88-win not-quite-playoff team, or a one and done vs. a strong opponent in the wild card game (like in 2014). Maybe it’s better to either try to shore up the starting pitching, or hold onto assets toward putting together a stronger team in the next few years.
On balance, I guess I’m OK with it as long as we aren’t giving up our top guys. For me that would be Barreto, Puk, Luzardo, Murphy, Lazarito, and maybe Beck.
Another minus: He was suspended for a domestic violence incident last year.
Ugh. I had completely forgotten that if I ever knew it. No thanks.
I’m not giving up Beck for him either. We’re not going to be picking that high in the draft again for quite a while, and he doesn’t look like a bust just yet. Make him a key piece in a deal for a centerpiece of a 2019/2020 push, or try to develop him. Don’t trade him for a marginal improvement on a wild card chance.
I thank andeux for keeping his depth chart up to date so I could figure out where Toffey fits in.
I’m more than OK with this. There’s an outside chance Wahl becomes what Familia is now, but I’d rather gamble that then give up anyone in the top 10. Toffey is filler and the INTL money is useless to us this year.
Familia is going to be hard to root for though, because of the DV issues.
This is the 100% correct and complete take.
Epic Aroldis Chapman meltdown. Came in with a four-run lead in the ninth, went walk, single, walk, walk, hbp. Leaves with the bases loaded and no outs.
The Yankees brought in a lefty, who induced a double-play ball and another grounder to end it. Yoenis was on the bench (he had come off the DL the day before and homered) but the Mets didn’t get him to the plate. Apparently he has “calcification in both heels” that will require major surgery that he is not getting yet for inexplicable reasons.
The parade is cool.
They didn’t introduce Billy Beane. Was it just for guys who were on the 25-man World Series roster?
Nice cars.
With Cahill Lowrie and Canha the A’s walk-up album has a solid classic rock vibe.
no ray, the cheers on the posey flyball were not the mt davis people, it was giants fans
Yes I doubt very much we’ll hear those fans at all, short of a Mt Davis inferno.
Lew was invited but his seat is empty because the sight of this many people in the Coliseum pisses him off so much.
Olson needs to be hitting behind Pinder and Chapman against lefties.
lots of pop ups
robot umps now
Stop asking Eck about Gibson!
Sure it’s Bumgarner, but can we score some fking runs at some point?
thx
Pinder is really impressive.
I bet Bumgarner HATES lawyers.
Plate discipline!
I might’ve thrown something when Semien swung at the 3-1 pitch but glad it worked out in the end
Eck is basically working as Korach’s color man right now and it very much does not suck.
He was great on TV earlier too, really enjoying himself. Too bad he doesn’t want a full time gig here.
Yeah, it’s great, I’m overlaying them on the MLB.tv stream.
He does color commentary for the Red Sox a lot. Their usual color guy (Jerry Remy) has had health issues and often skips the west coast road trips with Eck filling in for him.
Bumgarner was pretty shaky all game. That was very satisfying. they really need a base hit though
the two bases loaded walk made the gidp easier to take
Awful block by Phegley.
Phegley sucks but the world of backup catchers seems like a motley crew all around.
Good stuff, Buchter.
what is cahill going to do when they release brett?
never in doubt
We could use another Buchter.
two lefties?
Yes. A true LOOGY would help, although maybe BoMel will use Buchter that way more with Familia there.
56310 supposedly
that was a really nice run by crawford
We are winning the starter-leaves-with-bases-loaded contest, but only by a little.
dammit. come on. please work out.
Don’t throw Pence a strike. They just said it!
dammit
Not sure if I agree with you on your location work there Lou.
please score 5 runs
It’d be nice to have more than two hits
Gorgeous
At this point abandoning base stealing altogether feels like the right move.
I’m still reeling from Piscotty successfully stealing third.
21 steals against 16 caught coming into tonight. Yuck.
More runs plz
Nope. Too much to ask for.
kuiper and fosse have no idea what dallas was talking about with the Canha has two houses in the bay area
Remember when the A’s hit dingers? I’d like to see that
I’d settle for a few hits at this point.
well, that’s a hit
Ump sure likes that high, inside pitch tonight.
hey there!
Howdy!
Dylan Covey is shutting out the Mariners.
Phegley is just awful behind the plate. There’s no chance they could acquire a catcher right?
The exact same horrible stab-catch he screwed up earlier.
It’s absurd. You call for the slider, Treinen throws a predictably filthy one, and you do that??
COME ON PHEGLEY WTF?
bleich
pence. fuck. I don’t trust that guy
Me neither, but I’d still rather he have the job than the guy there currently.
in the aggregate, he is a bad MLB player.
The Frank Francisco memorial chair.
Come on, Melancon was swinging the chair at him.
No chair obstruction and Piscotty maybe throws the runner out by 20 feet
WTF?
I hate the Giants.
that is bullshit
to be fair, I always think stadium construction should go against the home team
All bullpens should have been removed from the playing field a long time ago. If the Cubs could do it at Wrigley Field, everybody could figure something out.
Put a fucking playpen fence around it. #solved
Im pissed at that whole half inning. Though I may also be a bit drunk so thats helping.
The Phegley misplay is reason enough to stay pissed, at least until Kool and the Gang come on
They need to walk this off now to get the taste out of half this crowd’s mouth.
Also how does Hunter Pence, who’s fking awful now, keep killing us
PR for Olson?
Next we’ll sacrifice hime over…smdh
Hate bunting with one strike…
Fuck the bunt. Get a damn hit. Don’t give Phegley a chance to redeem himself.
PH for Phegley?
Martini time
OK this game has just gotten plain weird.
Bunts lead to the injury trifecta.
Bunt again. Make one of their fat guys make a play.
Walk again!
Blerg.
*(#&$(*&#$(*&
Oh good grief.
Aaaaaargh!
the giants only have one pitcher left.
Melancon and Smith haven’t pitched.
And Blach.
how is that possible!
I thought he was a starter.
He was their opening day starter.
That was fucking terrible, Marcus.
Unfkingbelievable.
Semien seems to have no clue what to look for in hitters counts. Like that 3-1 pitch from Bumgarner and this weak 2-0 swing, the guy does not seem to understand the concept of one pitch, one spot.
The sellout crowd has made the A’s think this is an elimination playoff game.
lol
C’mon, Mark. You can flip it into their dugout if you deliver here.
I hope piscotty hits a HR off of melancon. (unless melancon doesn’t come in this inning)
Olmedo Saenz highlight augers well.
that crawford kid is good
Just when I thought it was going to drone on until Hatcher came in to cure the lack of offense.
I know Lucroy’s done FK all with the bat this year but damn I’m glad he’s saved us from a Maxwell/Phegley disaster.
“Calming veteran presence” is more overrated as anything, but still I gotta believe our pitching staff would develop PTSD throwing to Phegwell all year. Put your slider away with runners on base.
I had to stop myself from typing some BS “not our night” post.
Cabbage for all!
Familia hasn’t pitched since before the all star break, so he should be ready to go, what, five innings tomorrow?
Some nice redemption for Lucroy. So glad to beat those Giants in an Madbum start.
I never like walking off in the 10th, its a vince inning. 12th is fine because I want the game over
For a while I thought we were going to have to drag Eck back in there in order to score.
Yeah baby!
I want to know more about this
Did anyone catch Larry Baer on A’s radio last night? Apparently Korach let him call an inning of PBP.
Eric Byrnes, seen last diving across the RF finish line to win the big head race, is currently swimming from McCovey Cove to Oakland.
The first leg of this, which sounds awesome in a maniacally delightful Byrnesy way.
I love it, and if that’s true about PE classes being cut so much, that’s a great cause.
not about mr touch the plate and his well-placed efforts…
(full disclosure, most i’ve ever swum was 5 miles under 3 hours in a 100 ft pool.)
but i always feel like the swim part is thrown in there just so endurance runner/biker types can say they’ve done a tri. this is better than those ironmans where the swim is 1.2 miles (that’s basically a 35 minute warmup. hardly endurance distances compared to the marathon they’re about run). but still, i look at the running and biking distances in this and i’m all, multi-day-fuck-no. i look at 7 miles across the bay and it’s more like, ok, that’s a decent swim… eat a nice breakfast and have fun!
this is the kind of swim that begins to seem impressive: https://evan.marathonswimmers.org/bay-to-breakers/
still, you have to look hard for a multi-stage swim event. maybe it’s the lack of ~hunny miles of water dotted with stopping places along the way?
so just for fun, am hereby claiming the name “swimto sacto” © ™ etc.
how do you feel about it being done in a full wetsuit?
a trained open water swimmer would have accumulated a layer of fat lining his guts to make it unnecessary.
just last week i was walking on the embarcadero and some dude was heading toward those stairs at pier 14 to get out. no idea where he came from. but he was in just speedos and a cap.
i guess byrnes isn’t a trained open water swimmer. so i’ll allow it?
the hood’s gotta go tho. that’s embarrassing in 58º water.
How clean is the bay water? Maybe he’s trying to protect from split ends?
* his or her or their guts
chicken soup and ointment.
now we’re well into fuck-no territory.
Forget the Axe, which many current Cal students don’t know about anyway because they were, like, 9 years old the last time we won it. This one is for the NBC Sports Ugly Chunk of Metal, which I hope will take up an equally semipermanent residence on the east side of the Bay.
Cueto can’t be healthy right? He hasn’t thrown a pitch over 88 mph.
If he’s not injured yet he will be soon, the play keeps finding him
77 mph meatball, see ya!
If Cueto can get Khris hot again, that would be good timing, because the Rangers announcers always talk about how Khris murders their pitching every time he sees it.
I also hope Pinder is healthy enough to face Hamels tomorrow.
Korach, taking a Bill King Memorial Vacation, mentions that Roxy will be filling in for him in Arlington and for the interleague road series in Denver. Forecast high temperature in Arlington tomorrow is 105°F, cooling to 99°F, 101°F and 102°F for the remaining three days of the series.
Wtf? The ball clearly went into the dugout.
WTF redux.
Without looking I think the rule says pn a thrown ball out of play you get one base beyond what you’ve established. Since Bareeto only had established first he only gets one bag.
It’s two bases, but from the time the ball was thrown, so you usually get the base that you were already heading for and then the next. It’s why overthrows of first result in a runner at second since he was going to first when the throw was made.
When I get a few minutes I’m going to go through every A’s sac bunt for the last two or three years and see how many times they actually scored a run in that inning.
The difference between that perfect Crawford throw to home and Semien’s throw in Houston is quite stark.
Yeah honestly Cueto is throwing BP out there. They need to put him back on the DL.
They still owe him $68M after this year, so yes, I’d be trying to salvage something out of that investment.
Gee, here’s a shocker.
Ok, enough.
I get that they want to “be aggressive”. But until they can do it right sit on the damn base and dont move until the ball is hit.
Fowler is not really good right now at any aspect of the game. That popup would’ve been caught if he didn’t go back at first.
Olson twins
I hate it when the plate umpire’s right arm is hurt when the A’s are in the field.
Trivino threw 24 pitches last night and now Bob brings him in in the 7th. I think there needs to be a little more faith in Pagan there, against either Hernandez or Panda.
Yeah, Bob badly overmanaged this one.
It’s a long way to the end of September, you can’t just trust two (now, I hope, three) guys and yank anyone else after they give up one bloop hit.
I’d say he trusts four guys (now five). It’s just that Petit and Buchter are even more unavailable than Trivino.
All the more reason not to yank Pagan after one batter.
Another effective lefty would have made all the difference there. But not having that, you’ve got to let Pagan face the music.
Day game after an extra-inning game, 7 straight in Arlington and Coors Field impending, I get that Pagan isn’t one of his faves but he has been decent enough since his recall that he deserves more than one batter/bloop hit under these circumstances against the bottom of the Giants’ lineup or pinch hitters.
The J.B. Wendelken/Chris Hatcher innings tomorrow should be fun.
Well, so much for Petit being unavailable.
Agreed with all of this. They arent going to get less worn out so we have to manage some pitches.
And of course we can also use another srarter than can get into the 6th even.
BoMel really does not trust Pagan.
And that’s why Petit shouldn’t have been pitching here to begin with.
I don’t understand why Melvin is being so reckless here. Give the Wendelkid a chance. Even Hatcher. Live to fight another day.
Not Hatcher.
Crazy thought: Use the reliever you just traded for to keep you in the game and figure out the next step next.
Yes this please. Especially since a subsequent save situation seems rather unlikely,
Because managers don’t get blamed for losing with their “best guys” even if their best guys, when gassed, are probably worse than other options in the pen.
KD!!!!
I thank Goodness for Mark Melancon, and you should too, Bob.
I’m so glad the dingerz is back.
Barreto seems like he would make a good Giant-killer.
Bob thinks otherwise.
I’m skeptical that Phegley is meaningfully faster than Lucroy.
Yeah, what? You gave up your backup catcher for no gain. I think Bob got totally hosed after last night’s game and opted for the hair of the dog this morning.
Familia looks like one of those relievers who doesn’t exactly know where his pitches are going, but fortunately the hitters don’t either.
Yeah he missed the glove more often than not, but his pitches still had great action.
All right, need to win in the bottom of the 10th or it’s Hatcher Time.
Can we please win now? Anderson in 105 degree Arlington heat tomorrow does not bode well.
Start him on a prophylactic IV right now.
For tomorrow I’m almost thinking an 18-1 loss is just as well. Brett 110 pitches and then a DFA to make room for Montas, Hatcher 130 pitches and then the 60-day DL, and then we’re fresh and ready for the rest of the road trip.
HAHAHAHA
Wow. THE UGLY CHUNK OF METAL IS OURS!!!
Bout damn time!
Finally a break for us.
Heh heh heh.
Melvin gets the postgame interview. I nominate Trivino to deliver the pie.
After acquiring Familia, we can no longer afford pie.
How did Crawford not get an error on that play?
I think he missed it completely. So untouched = no error.
Missed it with his glove and kicked it I guess.
Calling it a single is OK since he had to hurry and Chapman might have beat it out anyway, but it should really be an error (and no RBI) for letting it get past him and the run score.
That’s my thinking.
Watching the game on replay. Cueto’s sorry ass fielding on the very first batter cost his team a win.
Did they…pump in an elephant bleat on Olson’s first homer?
If they didn’t… they should have.
Thanks, and go As.
watching all the highlights, I think so. FOr all Home runs
The reported interest in Mike Fiers is interesting. His one weakness is keeping the ball in the park which should be mitigated somewhat by the Coliseum.
I would love for the A’s to get him and Leonys Martin in a package deal. Martin is a great defender with a non zero bat while Dustin Fowler has been the biggest black hole on the team, offensively and defensively, outside of the catching situation.
Fiers seems like Jason Hammel, or maybe Mike Leake when the Giants gave up a couple prospects for two months of him – an average pitcher having a good (or maybe just babip-lucky) year. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with that – Cahill and Edwin Jackson are not exactly aces either, but have helped get us where we are this season – as long as the cost is more C+ prospects like we gave up for Familia.
Martin seems more interesting. He’s been pretty bad as a hitter before this year, but was once a top-100 prospect, and as you say would fill an obvious hole.
Fiers is due for negative regression (however severe that may or may not be) rather than maintaining his current numbers. Since he’s basically a league average starter and a touch below that in the AL over the last 4 seasons, I’d take a pass on that if we have to give up anything of value. Given our staff, I wouldn’t be opposed if it was for middling prospects though. So basically, what you said.
Oooh, Martin even bats lefty. I like this.
the 4 of 6 just won from the giants had a negative run differential
but a positive fun differential
huh. Just change one letter and the comment does a 180! Does it work for movies? I’ll start “Paws”

What??
4th is a place
If I lived in Rome I’d put on 100 pounds.
Have you been eating porchetta?
No – vegetarian. But the pasta and cheese and pizza and gelato …
I stepped away after the walk. Now what happened?
I was thinking about the A’s reacquiring Sonny Gray and letting him throw a fastball. Might be an upgrade over anderson/bassit/mengden and cheap. But, I think there are only 4 players he has spent a year with on the team. and he was traded only a year ago.
Semien, Lowrie, Canha, Manaea, Phegley?
and Khris.
wow. 5. That is crazy
