I had never thought much about the “T for Texas” line because Bob seemed to use it to set up the fill-in-the-city next line, which is a starring line of the song. Looks like Jimmie Rodgers wrote his, and then Noah Lewis wrote New Minglewood shortly thereafter with that presumed reference to the Rodgers song. And that’s your bit of music history trivia for today (which is based on 3 minutes of Googling and may be completely wrong).
Agreed. And while we are at it, is anyone else noticing the increasing tendency of Korach to exaggerate the space between any two words that end/start with either an S or Sh or Th? It started with Seth {pause} Smith and it has progressed to the point where he goes way overboard. It has started to diminish my appreciation of his broadcasts.
The Marlins rather unexpectedly canned Rich Waltz during the last offseason (but then they’re the Marlins so expect anything, I guess). Waltz is a Bay Area native, he said at the time he would want to get back into baseball, and depending on Glen’s contract status I’d think that’s a possibility going forward.
Is there a bracket for NBCSN A’s Memorable Moments thing they’re doing? Because as cool as Dallas’s perfecto was I can’t believe it’s a contender for #1.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
The final out of the 1972 World Series ought to win that, because of the four World Series wins that was the stunning upset, in addition to being the first. Picking a moment from 46 years ago probably leaves out too many people though.
72 WS final out, 89 WS final out, Game 20, Rickey’s record steal, Catfish perfecto, Braden perfecto, 2012 regular season finale…maybe 72 ALCS W vs Detroit?
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Yeah, there have been quite a few that didn’t quite rise to nightmare level. When Chirinos hit the home run on his birthday, the Rangers announcers brought up A-Rod’s walk-off grand slam on his birthday.
The drawings of the new place look pretty awesome. They had to compete with Jerry World next door. That will be high on the list in 2020 or soon after.
There was a season (I think it was 2010?) where the A’s hovered around .500 all year, frustratingly never getting 2 or 3 games over .500. This year reminds me of that year.
I feel like this team is kind of the reverse of that one. This team seems like it’s just not good enough to be .500 yet somehow hangs around it. I remember that team seemingly should have been better but couldn’t get it together whereas this team should be worse but doesn’t quite seem to fall apart.
For me it’s the other way around. I thought that 2010 roster was garbage at the time. They were a little better in the second half when Coco was playing, but .500 felt like a miracle.
This roster I think should be a little better than .500.
That team had good pitching (115 ERA+, led by Gio, Cahill, Braden, and over half a year of Anderson) but abysmal hitting (92 OPS+. That was Barton’s good year, Cust, Ellis and Crisp were OK, but then we had Cliff, Kz, Rajai, Gross).
This year we are right around league average for both, which feels like an underperformance from the offense but (as FSU says) an overperformance by the pitchers.
Leno got 76 percent of Jane Kim’s second-choice votes. If that holds in the uncounted mail votes, he should win barring something anomalous in the remaining first-choice votes.
Ranked choice is a hell of a ride. I think it probably reached the right result in this instance. Leno may not have been that many people’s first choice, but he wasn’t toxic to one of the moderate or lefty camps the way Kim and Breed were.
Yeah, I ended up voting Breed-Leno-[Blank] mostly because I get the impression that Kim is on the wrong side of that stuff and just generally prone to pandering.
That second link is crazy. Maybe I’m not reading it right, but Campos voted to stop a project despite thinking the appeal lacks merit because the renters’ union person compared the appellants to Trump during public comment? What in the world?
Northern California’s iron grip on the state Democratic party is really something. Feinstein, Harris, Brown, now Newsom. Meanwhile, Villaraigosa flamed out and Garcetti would rather flirt with a presidential bid than run statewide.
Edited to add that Xavier Becerra represented LA and may be the future.
someone, I don’t remember the name was running as a democrat against bacerra and at all name mentions the voice over said “the APPOINTED attorney general”
Interesting. Wasn’t on the 40-man roster. No power, but leading the team in OBP (.299/.417/.390). I guess taking him instead of Smolinski, Barreto, or Laureano means that Bob really wanted his LHB.
Trying to figure out how to get Blackburn on the roster tomorrow, they must be buying themselves a couple weeks by moving Boog to the 60-day DL. Unless they want to concede the inevitable and put Anderson on the 60-day DL.
It’s a perk no professional sporting facilities in California have offered since the mid-1980s, according to the press release. The San Diego Padres narrowly beat the A’s to the punch; they reintroduced the service at the end of May. At least they’re not the Dodgers.
In all the ballparks I’ve been to, I can’t recall vendors carrying anything other than Bud/Bud Light, Coors/Coors Light or Miller Lite (who would drink Miller High Life?). If I’m having a beer I visit a concession stand before the game starts. And Ed is right, we had vendor-sold beer at the Coliseum until the mid-80s (Henry Weinhard’s was $1.75/bottle IIRC, and in the pre-craft beer days Henry’s was a decent choice) but CA passed a law to restrict sales to fixed stands, so the law must have been changed recently.
My buddy was at a Chiba Lotte Marines game in Japan last month and was delighted to find vendors with keg backpacks selling you draft Asahi right at your seat.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Went to the BOB in the mid 2000’s and they had a guy walking around with a margarita machine on his back. To a kid raised in beer in your seat less CA the call of “Get ya MAH GAH RITAS!” was very inciting.
T is for texas t is for 2
We already have two!
That’s not the first “T for Texas” song I would think of.
Some says I am some says I ain’t
This one is probably better known to anyone who isn’t a ‘head.
It seems they both date from the late 1920s, though.
Two-out rally in the top of the first got us a couple runs. Manaea walked the first two batters in the bottom but escaped without conceding.
That was an amazing catch.
the way the ball is being hit, I expect 6 more runs
We are already there.
Not pictured in this series: Tim Lincecum, whom the Rangers released today.
That curve ball…that was not a good curve ball.
I have unfettered access to the A’s on TeeVee now. I have all season. I never watch it because I cannot take glen. I can barely tolerate Ray.
I am OK with Vince
Glen is mediocre but not intolerable for me. Narrated moving action pictures are worth it.
Same here. Glen has nothing interesting to say, but he is so bland that I can easily tune him out. Ray and Vince are both harder to take.
Agreed and I can say sometimes significant hearing loss aint the worst thing.
Glen is easier to handle when Ray isn’t around. Ray has become insufferable. But my god Glen is boring. And he’s just really bad at his job overall.
My dad texted me just to tell me how much he hate’s the A’s radio team.
Khrushed
yay khris

Elite 8:
72 WS final out, 89 WS final out, Game 20, Rickey’s record steal, Catfish perfecto, Braden perfecto, 2012 regular season finale…maybe 72 ALCS W vs Detroit?
I would put walk off bunt before dallas
I would probably rate that first of the 25 years I’ve lived here.
(And games 18 & 19 were both better than game 20)
Hatteberg’s homer seems like the betting favorite, and I don’t question the worthiness.
Dallas finally got knocked off by the 2012 last day clinch, I’m glad he had his run but obviously more deserving moments yet to come.
Petit Mal.
unbelieveable
sigh
That’s some good relievin’ there Lou.
Well, he was probably overdue for an evening of suckage, and here it is.
I always think “Kela, Kela, jewel of Wilson’s foul domain.”
As games in Arlington go, this is just your average social drinker’s bad dream.
Yeah, there have been quite a few that didn’t quite rise to nightmare level. When Chirinos hit the home run on his birthday, the Rangers announcers brought up A-Rod’s walk-off grand slam on his birthday.
i think whatever they did to the jet stream made the experience duller
The drawings of the new place look pretty awesome. They had to compete with Jerry World next door. That will be high on the list in 2020 or soon after.
There was a season (I think it was 2010?) where the A’s hovered around .500 all year, frustratingly never getting 2 or 3 games over .500. This year reminds me of that year.
It was 2010. They swept the Mariners on the last weekend to finish 81-81.
I feel like this team is kind of the reverse of that one. This team seems like it’s just not good enough to be .500 yet somehow hangs around it. I remember that team seemingly should have been better but couldn’t get it together whereas this team should be worse but doesn’t quite seem to fall apart.
i like that take
For me it’s the other way around. I thought that 2010 roster was garbage at the time. They were a little better in the second half when Coco was playing, but .500 felt like a miracle.
This roster I think should be a little better than .500.
In a division with the Astros, this pitching staff? Doesn’t look like a .500 roster to me.

Villaraigosa is currently in third place behind the Republican in LA County. Looks like Gavin is going to get the opponent he wanted.
DeLeon may squeak out second place to face DiFi, but it looks real close at the moment.
Terrible showing for Villaraigosa. where the fuck did all his money go?
I don’t think the math works for Leno
No? Some reason to think the mail ballots favor Breed?
Leno got 76 percent of Jane Kim’s second-choice votes. If that holds in the uncounted mail votes, he should win barring something anomalous in the remaining first-choice votes.
wow, my comment realizing that leno was leading did not show up.
Yeah, I think he is in good shape.
Stunning blow for Mayor for life Brown
Ranked choice is a hell of a ride. I think it probably reached the right result in this instance. Leno may not have been that many people’s first choice, but he wasn’t toxic to one of the moderate or lefty camps the way Kim and Breed were.
Probably the only way chaos doesn’t reign down.
I don’t trust the YIMBYs but there are so fucking many obstacles to density.
Both within 4 blocks of me. both wastes in so many different ways.
Yeah, I ended up voting Breed-Leno-[Blank] mostly because I get the impression that Kim is on the wrong side of that stuff and just generally prone to pandering.
can you imagine a peskin board with mayor breed?
So many of our supervisors seem like utter lunatics incapable of basic interpersonal relationships.
That second link is crazy. Maybe I’m not reading it right, but Campos voted to stop a project despite thinking the appeal lacks merit because the renters’ union person compared the appellants to Trump during public comment? What in the world?
Land use issues have a way of turning seemingly reasonable people into raving lunatics.
Yes. that is right.
I would vote no because its not 30 stories high. that is what is needed there
Well, you might end up being right after all. Leno is now up by only 255 votes. Still 84,000 mail ballots to count.
144 votes.
~60,000 ballots to go.
Bush v gore got me addicted to the internet when Jake tapper was working for Salon. This feels similar with much much much lower stakes.
Breed by 498
Huzzah!
Northern California’s iron grip on the state Democratic party is really something. Feinstein, Harris, Brown, now Newsom. Meanwhile, Villaraigosa flamed out and Garcetti would rather flirt with a presidential bid than run statewide.

the appointed attorney general?
He’ll be elected in November.
you didn’t listen to the A’s on the radio?
Yesterday? No.
someone, I don’t remember the name was running as a democrat against bacerra and at all name mentions the voice over said “the APPOINTED attorney general”
Wow, burn, the very popular governor hand-picked me to do this important job. You really owned me there.
Ads like that are the equivalent of stealing money for some political consultant.
I would have voted for him if I could add a comment “I heard you on 1550!”
That ad reached at least a dozen people.
Ugh, I despise Gavin.
He doesn’t need you to care, he needs you to cash
Alone returns next week! Best reality show ever.
Interesting. Wasn’t on the 40-man roster. No power, but leading the team in OBP (.299/.417/.390). I guess taking him instead of Smolinski, Barreto, or Laureano means that Bob really wanted his LHB.
So he’s Joyce without the occasional homer.
But he can also give out wings!
His walk-up music is something by Pink Martini, I hope.
He is somehow only 34.
Man, we are really desperate.
Lincecum signing in 5…4…3…
The A’s seem unlikely to be stupid desperate for that kind of price tag. Stupid desperate for peanuts is more our style.
Phone call goes to Rangers’ fireworks supplier. They may need one-hour priority service on restocking.
Is Font back?
in spirit
WE’RE OUT!! DO YOU NEED A POLICE ESCORT TO GET THROUGH TRAFFIC??
Whew, they got the guns reloaded just in the nick of time.
I think they tapped into the strategic firework reserves under the ballpark.
Mengden has given up 3 homers and it’s an LOBfest for the A’s offense, otherwise this game is going tremendously.
I thought Canha got all of that one. So did he.
Oh right, no one else is watching this game.
Even if we weren’t up against The Finals, this one is headed for Chris Hatcher Time.
Yeah, but Nick Martini’s MLB debut!
Without seing the outcome, I’m calling it “shaken but not stirred”.
I am glad to have missed this
WTF was that Khris?
This game has been plenty long and he’s getting hungry.
Trying to figure out how to get Blackburn on the roster tomorrow, they must be buying themselves a couple weeks by moving Boog to the 60-day DL. Unless they want to concede the inevitable and put Anderson on the 60-day DL.
gosset to 60?
We’ve just given up on Hatcher or Casilla DFA?
Casilla would look good in kansas city light fires
?
Luzardo: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
this was the mengden I expected
When I read that discussion above in this thread about overperformance by the pitchers I was thinking, “Exhibit ‘A'”.
That explains the Phegley recall.
blackburn is gonna save 500?
yes
Cold beer here!
(Though probably not good beer)
Whuh?
so, the law changed? I’d like a little more Michelle
Are there any decent brews sold in aluminum bottles?
I don’t understand why they wouldn’t sell beers in cans.
smacks of an exclusive Anheiser Busch promo.
I think someone I know has said he was a Ballantine’s vendor there in the 70s.
I drank so much Henry’s in my Cal days. We thought it was high class.
it’s not beer, it’s henry’s
I drink Miller High Life often. It, PBR, and Tecate are my go-to softball in the sun beers.
Tecate is my Raider beer of choice. I know how to slum appropriately.
why does miller HL make my pee so foamy?? it’s weird.
Too much head.
There is no such thing.
My buddy was at a Chiba Lotte Marines game in Japan last month and was delighted to find vendors with keg backpacks selling you draft Asahi right at your seat.
And yet when I try to bring a keg into the ballpark …
Reverse racism is a hell of a thing.
Went to the BOB in the mid 2000’s and they had a guy walking around with a margarita machine on his back. To a kid raised in beer in your seat less CA the call of “Get ya MAH GAH RITAS!” was very inciting.
