The Diamondbacks pay an interleague visit to the Coliseum, trying to salvage something out of an epically bad month of May. The pitching hasn’t been awful, but they are 5-16 due to their offense, which in 748 PA this month has barfed up a composite .183/.258/.294. Oft-injured A.J. Pollock is good when he plays, but he’s on the DL again.
Friday at 6:35: Manaea vs. Patrick Corbin. Corbin’s velocity has been down significantly his last few starts.
Saturday at 1:05: Mengden vs. Clay Buchholz. Yes, that Clay Buchholz, who has thrown a total of 12-1/3 major league innings in 2017 and 2018.
Sunday at 1:05: Cahill Montas vs. Zack Greinke.
The ex-A’s report: There are no ex-A’s on the Arizona roster.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and try to find a little time for some Oakland Athletics baseball.
I think Ray may actually be scared of Vader.
I find his lack of faith disturbing.
Eventually people are going to stop trying to bunt toward third base against us.
can someone delete mine? I can’t ever get that function right
wait. the third inning?
fireworks game
Which evidently started a fire that closed the BART ramp?
yankees beat the angels
I have not thought about that stupid spiders and snakes song in a long long time, it will probably now stick in my head all weekend.
Even worse, by the same artist:

How about Skillet of Snakes?
Also, I’m not going to today’s 1970s Swingin’ A’s alumni event, but consistent with the ’70s theme I’m going down the street to see Bob Newhart tonight. The guy is 88 and still does a few stand-up shows per year. I think I saw him in a Las Vegas showroom when I was a teenager. I might prefer this be sit-down comedy, because age 88 and >6200 feet elevation isn’t necessarily a great combination.
saw him in seattle in 2000 or so. good show
The old fellow stayed upright for an hour and didn’t need a teleprompter. Still funny, but the Jimmy Swaggart and Tammy Faye jokes say a lot about when he stopped updating his material.
They’re going all in on marketing to the drunks. Solid move, honestly.
He’s going to lose this game because he can’t get Jeff FKing Mathis out. Ugh.
its not just mathis
Yeah, it was fun for a while but we’re clearly back to the Manaea I thought the A’s had coming out of spring training.
Vince and ken discussing the mariners $12 windfall. I am excited about so baseball analysis
Captain Sal! Way before any advanced stats, when I was a kid I liked him because he always had a ton of RBIs despite hitting about .240. Looking back now, he had a pretty good OBP and more BBs than Ks for his career.
On the bright side, Casilla exits with an apparent arm injury.
that may keep him out of games
If he’s out for a while he’ll have time to go to the Dominican and visit the same doctor who has worked wonders for Robinson Cano and Welington Castillo.
What is the point of pinch hitting for Barreto in a 6-1 game?
Cleveland had a 2-0 lead on the Astros after 7 innings tonight. They lost 11-2.
The Astros had an 8-3 lead on Cleveland heading to the bottom of the ninth yesterday. They lost 10-9.
Semien is in the starting lineup today but is going on paternity leave at any moment, so that would be the move for Montas.
Noooo, not Salah, nooooooooo
Ugh, what a ridiculous goal
And now a sublime goal.
The A’s Memorial Day uniforms aren’t all that bad compared to some of the previous iterations. The Diamondbacks aren’t flattered by the olive green bill of the cap on top of their other colors.
Oh I feel really bad for this Liverpool goalkeeper. What a nightmare.
Mengden is moving into the “Staff Ace” role. Also, the appearance of the D’Backs offense last night may have been a one night stand.
And acquitting himself well.
This team really just stopped hitting when KD went down.
Is this Dan Haren?
I think Randy Jones learned how to throw right-handed and added 10 mph to his fastball.
This
Oh, that was a two-part post? Probably. Ken and Vince have talked about the analytical work he does with the Diamondbacks. I thought you were comparing Mengden to Haren.
Not intended as a two-part post, but I was being the old guy who can’t figure out how to post a photo from my phone.
While my stalker/paparazzi skills leave something to be desired, I’m pretty sure it was him (with his kid). Sat in the back of diamond level for a couple of innings, wearing a dbacks polo and the weird camouflage hat that the team was wearing today.
Continuing the 70s theme, a complete game 2-hit shutout, time of game 2:15.
Also .500 day is now at least Memorial Day, at the 1/3 point of the season.
I’ve never been at a no-hitter, and pretty sure not a 1-hitter either, so technically this is tied for the best I have seen, but the other one has a substantial edge in degree of difficulty.
I knew what that would be before I clicked it. What a game.
my first A’s game was a 3 hitter
I remember my first 1-hitter pretty clearly because Vida had a no-hitter going with one out in the 9th. Stanley’s homer went about 450 feet, deep into the bleachers in left-center, not much doubt about that one.
I remember my first perfect game because it was mother’s day. Also because it was perfect game.
Willie horton played in both of those games.
I think this was the best game I ever saw live. Someone gave me good seats about 20 rows behind the giants dugout. great outcome
dammit sonny
If Greinke’s gonna get three inches off the plate this is gonna be a quick afternoon.
Frankie Montas lookin good!
Rickey really needs to have a word with these guys.
you mean bob?
mathis again!
This is magic.
Speaking of magic, this was hilarious
LOL
