We’re not harvesting your keystrokes, honest.
A’s already up 2-0 on the Rangers in front of a disgracefully small crowd in Oakland Arlington.
Trevor Cahill looks like a better reclamation project than Matt Moore thus far.
I expected a longer at bat from olson
Saw we had an early lead. Then remembered its Arlington, where leads go to die.
Dallas is a football town rhey’ll never support a baseball team.
Dammit Maxwell! Wait…
3 runs wasn’t going to win the game
looked to me like the bat got the shinguard
Is the rule that any contact at all is automatically interference? Because that was very minor and didn’t seem to impede the throw at all.
i don’t know
i listened to the rockies. the woman improved the telecast, but the rockies guys are still shitty
I am expecting a krushed moonshot here.
no bob no
That hilariously awful AB happened because Bob wasted Pinder by pinch-hitting for him with Joyce with 2 out and nobody on.
They said he has gone 44 games played without an RBI? Even given that a lot of those were 1 PA pinch hitting appearances, that’s still amazing.
should have bunted
A very timely Semien
a very special semien
Now tied with the immortal Bobby Crosby in the franchise annals.
How is Treinen’s ankle?
It was likely in a bucket of ice on the plane. He’s not warming up. Bob does have Experienced Closer Santiago Casilla available…
So…youre saying we need to put up a 10 spot here.
Nope, still can’t trust him with it.
Krush Groove pls.
nice to see the A’s running into very A’s like defense in the past week
He doesn’t play very much outfield and I guess I’d have to dig through their active roster and DL to figure out why he’s there tonight.
Seemed like a genuinely tough play to me – all the way to the wall, jumped fully extended, off the edge of his mitt. He certainly could have caught it, but hard to say that he should have.
He did look awkward though.
tough like semien’s “error.” A good Left fielder gets it
So Canha is…excellent now?
How does it feeeeeel?
6 run innings seem fun.
You might regret this comment in about 15 minutes.
One of my friends is finally getting into baseball. He didnt understand my concern.
Just got the first “oh shit” text. And I shared the phrase “worst alcoholic nightmare”.
I bet Ray uses his bag of disfigured finger bones as a party trick.
This feels like over managing. Do you really need a pitching change for 2 outs with a 6 run lead?
With Coulombe in the minors Bob wanted to keep his bullpen lefty’s pitch count down. Even Hatcher SHOULD be able to get 2 outs before giving up 6 runs.
Chris Hatcher always quick to announce his presence.
Why doesn’t Lou Trivino have Hatcher’s job yet.
I feel there are suburbs where everyone is named Taylor, Tyler, or Cletus.
There might be states of Brandon’s.
Cool…we have a winning record.
Its better than losing!
I feel like Ray has been doing this long enough to know that there was save opportunity in this game for Buchter. Apparently even in a game where they take the lead, he doesn’t pay attention.
This is the road trip I bailed on so I’ll be interested to see what I’m missing. The weather forecast looks pretty good except for maybe Wednesday, and that’s a reason I was considering an April trip to Texas. The one win equals what I got last year in Florida, and I only got that because they split a doubleheader.
It seems like if the pitching is decent they have a chance to be competitive this season. Right now they aren’t a bad watch.
Now that we’re over .500, what ace are we turning Barreto into for the pennant push?
2.5 years of samardzija
i am wondering if anyone wants a jed and what kind of reliever can be gotten for one
You want to trade the MVP for a reliever??
Don’t look now, but Brett Anderson has been dominant at AAA. His two and a half starts this season are going to be good.
I did have the thought that Anderson is the kind of guy who would be in a Waffle House at 3:25 a.m., but fortunately they were on the road.
casilla out and have a 3 headed anderson-cahill-bassit monster?
gotta be trolling vince

Yeah there will be ups and downs but we’ll remain steady.
the wire *ended* ten years ago??
…i shall wear the bottoms of my burners rolled.
I think I am falling for Mohamed Salah.
john oliver has
If I get an Egypt Salah jersey right now will I be too late to be cool?
these are on sale!
my cousin works for UNHCR and he is in egypt right now, I’ll ask if he can find a few
he’s not there anymore
Conceding two late goals sucks (though the penalty was very harsh).
I thought the penalty was unfortunate but had to be called.
Fangraphs has the A’s position players at 5.8 WAR, more than a full win better than the second place Cubs and Yankees.
The pitching is middle of the pack. If it were just a little better…
I feel like a ranking of all MLB ballparks on fan overreactions to routine fly balls would put Texas pretty high.
That’s a new one.
That was pretty funny, Beltre running from first to third on teh overthrow from Lucroy…on a dead ball.
All those fly balls, one was eventually going out.
Get someone up Bob.
Lily recently made this Lord of the Rings cartoon
which I then asked for on a t-shirt for my upcoming birthday.
The company we found to do this has just refused on copyright grounds. WTaFK?
how many shirts?
if yet unresolved, maybe i can help.
TBD on the number, either just one or enough to be tried out as a Homeless Kit fundraiser.
I wonder if because it’s been used in memes around the net, if the Tolkien folks who oversee the rights of the property have stepped in at some point in stopping people from trying to use it for profit (profit in the this case for the printing company). Foolish either way.
I am sure both abuse and clampdown have become much worse since the movies, I can see the copyright lawyers arguing complicity with the printing services, I would have expected it for the image in the Boromir/”One does not just … ” meme, but this seems like a stretch.
let’s not speculate.
zazzle has a relationship with lord of the rings TM.
try this printer:
that image is difficult to clean up as is. i’d start from a scan.
First two batters against Luzardo in AA doubled and scored. Finished with 5 IP, 5 K, only one more hit and 1 BB.
it took a great play, but the score should have kept you at second
The don’t make the first out at third cliche you learn in little league, and the fact that he’s a 31-year-old catcher, should have kept him at second.
there is that
The passed ball and TOOTBLAN combo platter for Lucroy.
The Rangers’ bullpen is fun.
That would have scored a run. Damn.
I think the infield was in, so maybe.
But that was some terrible baserunning all inning
Not the best route to that ball by Gallo.
Pls stop hurting our closer other teams…
that seems wrong, but ok
That was a pretty strong statement by Bob to Beane/Forst that he has Bassitt, Buchter, Casilla, Hatcher, Pagan and Trivino and he’s afraid to use any of them in that 8th inning situation.
Or just using his best pitcher against their best hitters?
Trivino here is certainly a statement about some of those guys though.
“If you leave Casilla on the team, I will bring him in to close a one run game.”
How are you doing?
Good! But we’ll see in the next few minutes… How is everyone here?
“I have a very particular set of skills.”
Poor Beltre, it’s getting to be wheelchair time.
And if Beltre is out for a while, it looks like we’ll get to see if Renato Núñez amounts to anything.
Am I stoned or did they just say Casilla’s coming in?
proven closer ™
Can’t it be both?
Santiago Casilla comes in to try and save it for the A’s. Bone chilling words, truly.
It’s time to get Picard_facepalm.jpg loaded up for quick posting.
that strike to chapman was the same pitch beltre didn’t strike out on
The two gals with the Batter Up tank tops right behind the plate are very aware of the camera angles.
when you say angles i think of curves.
I want to curse Casilla out ahead of time, but instead I will take the Jairo’d.
Trivino has the second highest WPA of A’s pitchers this year, after Manaea.
Trade him literally right now. His value will not be higher.
Funny thing about relievers like him is that they go from great to shitty to not bad, to bad, to pretty good from year to year. I’m not saying we keep him, but you look at a shitfest like Jim Johnson and you’ll see a guy who’s had a few serviceable season after leaving the A’s. Hard to look past the garbage year(s) when they’re with us or near us.
When they’re that volatile, why bother keeping them when they are obviously in a down decade?
Thanks, and go As.
Oh, I wasn’t considering keeping him at all. Not even justifying it really. I fully support the sell high being literally anytime anyone is willing to take him off our hands.
Yay Casilla! Never a doubt!
More info on the unprecedented expansion success of the Vegas Golden Knights, against whom the Sharks square igg strung tomorrow. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sharks/article/Sharks-realize-Vegas-is-not-a-typical-expansion-12861698.php
robben out at 6 minutes in?
Can’t wait to hear AV’s take on this. I guess the writing was on the wall.
Two of those HRs as he was giving up the final six runs in mopping up that 16-6 Dodger loss to the A’s (Chapman and Lowrie with the homers). He and Pagan make quite a pair.
i’ll remain typefaced until i see his letterform.
Supposedly he throws a good kernball.
Oh hey Acuña is ready to play in the majors now. How convenient for the Braves.
Maybe it’ll turn out that Graveman needs to pitch to a catcher that’s dumber than he is.
And/or a strike zone as wide as two Bartolos.
I guess Maxwell can’t complain too much about that strikeout then.
My Graveman-to-Nashville Meter is fluctuating pitch by pitch tonight.
I feel pretty good about this so far. He’s getting ground balls at least.
He deserved better in that last inning. A couple bloops, but some lazy defense resulting in extra bases.
Just dropped in to say BARELY KNEW ‘ER
Rangers should have a take sign on for any count.
They have made themselves a solid reputation of ridiculous concession items. Super Cheesy Bacon Corn Dog Sandwich Between Glazed Donuts and so forth.
That was a deeply stupid throw by Piscotty.
He didn’t even charge the ball first. (I mean, if he had, it still probably would have been stupid to throw home, but somewhat less stupid.)
Just me, or is Maxwell looking extra large?
T H I C C
Booty had me like…
on a scale from 1 to Landon Powell?
Now that was an ass you could set your watch by.
An ass I’d have hired to deliver three cubic yards of gravel, or build me a storage shed.
Or sit on someone I didn’t like.
I was at a game where Landon Powell came into the game as a pinch runner.
Now you’re just making shit up.
Going down that rabbit hole, I stumbled across this game where Jeff Nelson got 2 holds.
No, take one of the bad ones, injury demon.
We can certainly get a couple of runs off the guy from Coldplay.
This has been a pretty blah effort all around. Glad they have an off-day tomorrow.
DeShields doesn’t have the greatest arm, but for some reason Semien thought Coco was out there. The A’s could still sweep this series, but everything about the first 7-1/2 innings has given me the sense they’re determined not to do that.
Should have let Pagan go out on the positive of the seventh. Baby steps.
Opening Day starter going against a journeyman coming off the DL, other team has 3/4 of its infield on the DL, a team that’s going to have a decent season ought to complete the sweep there.
#Athletics have added RHP Wilmer Font to the 25-man roster. RHP Chris Bassitt and RHP Kendall Graveman have been optioned to Triple-A Nashville.— Oakland Athletics ?????????? (@Athletics) April 26, 2018

What’s the record for the shortest time between being Opening Day starter in the bigs and being sent to the minors?
And does Kendall have a brother called Doug?
Brett Anderson time, baby.
Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. He would be on turn, either Tuesday with extra rest, or (if they skip that spot and give him one more AAA start on Monday) next Saturday.
6 innings, 87 pitches yesterday, so he’s ready and it would be wasteful to use any more of his limited number of innings in AAA.
And in the meantime, nine-man bullpen for the Houston series!
Petit and Coulumbe return, Buchter to DL. For those keeping track, it is indeed now a 9-man bullpen until we need a 5th starter: Treinen, Petit, Dull, Coulombe (only lefty), Trivino, Pagan, Font, Hatcher, Casilla.
Coulombe being the only lefty is bad news.
Hatcher is listed as a switch-hitter, maybe he should try throwing lefty, since right isn’t working out for him anyway.
A nine-man bullpen is silly, and they’re thin in the infield when Melvin does his automatic move of pinch-hitting Joyce for Pinder as soon as the lefty starter is out, but OTOH it doesn’t make sense to bring up Barreto to do nothing but sit again.
I think the real question is whether Font or Anderson pitches on Gravemen’s turn. There’s also Bassitt who has pitched reasonably but I think he’s 3rd in line since he has some bullpen experience.
The A’s at least have a multitude of slop to try throwing against the wall to see what sticks and/or doesn’t hurt themselves.
I don’t watch college football or have many opinions about prospects, so it’s impressive that the Bills managed to trade up and take the one player I didn’t want.
But the hand size!
The LB they got next might be good though, I was kinda hoping the Raiders would take him.
It’s impressive that they turned picks 12, 22, 53, 56, and 65 into pick 7 and 16.
That’s just horrible.
The second trade was ok both in terms of value (at least by the standard draft chart) and the player taken (at least according to FSU).
Overpaying to take a “projectible” QB with bust written all over him though.
I was not expecting the pregame hoopla for the Vegas-Sharks series to include Bill Laimbeer.
Sharks are looking like they just crawled out of a casino a few minutes ago.
Yeah this is ugly so far.
Ok this is adorable.
Sonny has been terrible this season, possibly because the Yankees don’t let him throw fastballs:
(Sorry, can’t do a text link from my phone)
Why on earth would they think that would work? Breaking balls (at least seem like they) won’t hit the zone with anywhere near the frequency of a fastball. They’re harder on the arm. The higher frequency increases the likelihood of one being hung. It mat seem like a hitter may not be able to sit dead red on a heater, but unless the ball is consistency breaking hard and staying in the zone, you may as well continue to sit on the fast ball.
It seems to be Yankees organizational philosophy at least since last year.
wasn’t it in NY that McCarthy started throwing the 2 seam again, after being banned from it in AZ?
Or sit on the breaking ball. To some extent these things go in waves. It seemed like 10 or 15 years ago the trend was to try to get everyone to pitch down in the zone to generate grounders. Now we have the “launch angle” revolution with hitters trying to get under everything, even (or especially) pitches that are down. But that has left them vulnerable to high fastballs, and it seems like a lot of pitchers are having more success with that pitch. It’s weird that the Yankees are going the other way. Maybe it’s working for most of them, though. As a staff they have allowed a below average number of HR this year.
You’d think that you’d focus on their best pitch(es) and just work from there. Some things like pitching just don’t fit in a mold. It makes sense if their fastball sucks and their breaking pitches are good. Not so much if it’s the other way around or if their fastball is their best pitch.
ESPN bumped game 6 of an NBA playoff series involving the top seed in the east to ESPNNEWS because of the second round of the NFL Draft. Amazing that the league puts up with that.
Nobody commands the viewing dollar like the National Football League. Also “top seed in the East” is faint praise.
NBA is on every day for like 9 months. The NFL draft is only one day a year. Well, three days now. Three long, drawn out days.
I had to fight Lily for the ticket to the Greenpeace fundraiser last night when she heard Bonnie Wright was a guest speaker, but we did get her “Save Ginny Weasley” shirt signed.
