      To me the superstition thing has gotten expended beyond any reason. It was born in the dugout, and that’s the right place for it. To extend it to fans (in the park or at home) is silly but the way most things we fans do to identify with the team is silly, so no harm. • Soaker Soaker Apr 21,2018 8:51 pm || Up

      There is no chance that is scored an error if the pitcher has already given up a legitimate hit.

          The classic framing is that it’s an error if the play should have been made with normal effort. Back to the infield on the run over your shoulder is not normal effort and I can’t recall ever seeing that called an error otherwise.

            Yeah I guess that seemed like a really make-able catch, but I only saw that very brief replay. If he had to go on a full-out sprint to get to it or something, maybe I take your point. The portion that I saw looked like a pretty simple play for a Major League fielder to make, so naturally Semien was vastly underqualified.

        There’s an appeals process for official scorer’s decisions. Sometimes in her notes section, Slusser will mention that “the play on which Marcus Semien was charged with an error in last Tuesday’s game was changed to a base hit for Adrian Beltre after the Rangers appealed the decision to MLB”. I would enjoy a Red Sox appeal here for the stated purpose of keeping that streak alive, just because they would look like such whining jerks.

      Then I remembered being at the game Schilling almost nono-ed the A’s. There were some A’s fans there rooting for it, but A) I didn’t want a red sox, much less Schilling, to do it in our house, and B) I think it was only 1-0 or maybe 2-0, so we were still looking for a W. • Soaker Soaker Apr 22,2018 10:23 am || Up

      I think the three-foot path confuses the issue here.

      There’s this:

      5.09 Making an Out

      (a) Retiring the Batter

      A batter is out when:

      (11) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball.

      Rule 5.09(a)(11) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane are a part of that lane and a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the three-foot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.

      To me none of that applies if the ball isn’t being thrown to first base, which it wasn’t. Obviously there are lots of times when somebody runs outside the lane, e.g. rounding first base going for a double, and the comment isn’t meant to say he’s automatically out for going 8 feet towards the dugout in that case.

      There’s also this:

      (b) Retiring a Runner

      Any runner is out when:

      (1) He runs more than three feet away from his base path to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely.

      See, “the runner’s base path” is not necessarily the foul line, and in fact the presence of the three-foot path suggests it’s supposed to be a little outside of the foul line there. Benintendi was definitely outside the three-foot path but, I thought, within his three-foot base path.

      • Future Ed Future Ed Apr 22,2018 10:30 am || Up

        jonny gomes thought 1) the running lane had something to do with it, and then 2) it made no sense because you can round the base on a base hit

      • Future Ed Future Ed Apr 22,2018 10:31 am || Up

        I think it was fairly applied. If it had been a rundown there would be little qurstion

        I have $5. No I don\'t.
        • Soaker Soaker Apr 22,2018 10:45 am || Up

          The umpires’ discussion had to be “Was he 2’10” outside of his base path, or was it 3’2″?” They decided 3’2″, so yes, it was fairly applied; I’m just not sure I agree with the 3’2″ conclusion. A rundown is a different issue, because then the runner’s base path is unambiguously the straight line between the middle of the two bases.

          • dmoas Apr 22,2018 1:35 pm || Up

            Except you’re likely basing it on the physical line rather than where the runner was actually running. That right foot is easily more than 3 ft from where he started in his path.

      • andeux andeux Apr 22,2018 11:23 am || Up

        – Agreed, three feet from his established line is the appropriate rule, chalked running lane is not relevant
        – The fact that he had to do a full out dive to get back and touch the base makes me think he was well outside that 3 feet. But it also looked like he was slipping as that happened, which might have made it look like he was farther away than he actually was.

        The thing that makes 1st different is that the most direct line path from the box is that very line. It’s hard to justify a direct path from anywhere that doesn’t involve going through that part of the path, including the lunge hit taking you across the plate. But in this case, he was very clearly in one path and ran out of it.

      As to Gomes’ presence, that’s the residual of the blowup between Price and Eckersley last year, which evidently never got patched up. Eck used to cover for Jerry Remy when Remy skipped some games or an entire road trip, but Eck hasn’t traveled with the team since that incident, so they have to scrounge up somebody else who maybe doesn’t have any broadcasting experience for a West Coast trip.

      But he throws a 7-pitch 6th inning, which could make a big difference in the game.

        Maybe this is just 20/20 hindsight, but Bob seems a little slow with the hook Friday and today.

          His 6th and 7th inning relievers have been bad enough that he tries to defer that pain a bit by milking an extra out from the starter. I think Graveman had retired about 11 in a row going to the 6th inning Friday so that happened quickly. It did look like Mengden was starting to nibble in the 7th inning today.

            My thinking is that in a close game if the starter is about done anyway based on pitch count, and then two guys get on, it’s now a high leverage situation, and you’re probably better off with the fresh arm, even when your bullpen is mediocre, as ours has been in recent years.
            And trying to squeeze that extra out from the starter often just leaves you bringing in the same reliever in a worse situation anyway.

              When you get to that spot where you’re trying to stretch it, it literally needs to be batter to batter. Guy gets on, get him out of there. If two guys get on, it’s already too late. Not that I don’t disagree with what you’re saying.

              I can’t argue with that reasoning, but Vince gave the stat that the bullpen has allowed 18 of 40 inherited runners to score this year so I can see why Bob would be skittish.

    I have to be reminded every year that the baseball season is very long so it’s best not to get too up or too down over a week or two of games.

    But seriously, folks...

    Any chance there are teams named the Blue Sox or Green Sox that we can play?

    Feeling pretty good about this team when Pagán doesn’t pitch.

    Speaking of slow hooks, Cora probably deserves some shit for letting Price face KD.

      that was unbelievable. I had it on gameday when out with kids. I expect the hook and got a blue dot instead

        Somewhat interestingly, KD has reverse splits both for his career (slight) and this season (large). That makes leaving Price in a closer call.

          Per fangraphs, the leverage index was 3.47 when Khris khrushed

      Man, this plus his earlier tweet make me really like Hanley. I really wanted him to be an A in 2012 and it greatly disappoints me that they did not get him.
