    I don’t get why Smolinski keeps starting against righties.
    I don’t get not getting Barreto a single at bat in a week full of opportunities to do so.
    I don’t get the insistence of using Chris Hatcher as the setup man.

    BoMel has had some truly miserable rosters to contend with the last 3 years, but there’s been more than a few management issues that have added up to exacerbate the suck. This is a game that should’ve been won, and was lost almost entirely due to questionable managing decisions.

    Too much paralysis by analysis in that first inning for Graveman. He needs to let Lucroy call the game and just execute whatever pitch he’s told to throw.

      Semien drives in Lucroy on a ball to deep LF, throw gets away, Semien tries to score too, called out at home for 3rd out.
      Mariners challenge, changed to ground rule double (ball hit back wall on the bounce), taking both the run and out off the board.
      A’s end up getting both runs, plus another one.

      As I suggested above, I suspect there’s a little too much going on between the ears while he’s pitching. Dave Stewart could think his way through a game; Steinbach would put down fingers, Stew would add or subtract to the sign by brushing his glove on his leg, and here comes the pitch he chose. Most pitchers shouldn’t think; all the activity while they’re on the mound should be from the neck down.

        On that note, Hatcher shaking off Lucroy last night was really a bad idea.

  26. Soaker Soaker Apr 14,2018 8:02 pm

    Ken and Vince were talking about the mound visits, and here’s my observation after a couple weeks. A lot of the pitch-indecision type visits by the catcher have been eliminated. However, when the catcher does decide to go to the mound to settle a disagreement, the pitching coach says “Well, since we’re being charged a visit here anyway, I might as well go out there too and see if there’s anything I can add”, so that extends the time of those visits by reason of the 30 second clock on coaching visits.

    • Soaker Soaker Apr 14,2018 9:22 pm || Up

      The bullpen is likely a lost cause regardless, but having Petit pitch mop-up innings strikes me as lousy managing. Casilla is on the roster, nobody is taking his salary off their hands, so let him pitch in these games until his arm falls off.

              They have 3 guys (Canha, Thompson, Smolinski) who have overlapping skillsets and two of them (Canha, Smolinski) have options. Replacing Nunez with either of those two guys would not be an issue. Since neither left handed CF options (Fowler, Powell) are viable at this point, it just seems like if they could’ve easily kept Nunez around if they wanted to.

              There’s also this 8 man bullpen that Melvin loves to have but rarely utilizes to its fullest extent. There’s always a couple of guys, as Soaker points out, who get overused and one guy (Casilla) who never gets used. They would be better off with a 7 man pen that has a long reliever.

        This made me check who currently has the worst fWAR in MLB.

        Six players are tied at -0.5. Two of those players are Kendall Graveman and Stephen Piscotty.

        • Soaker Soaker Apr 16,2018 3:27 pm || Up

          Slusser implied that the -0.5 is enough to get Graveman relegated to a lower division. Anderson has thrown 8 innings for Nashville, and I figure he’s good for around 30 per year, so the 22 innings he has left are enough for four starts at the A’s current rate, and hopefully by that time Graveman will be ready to improve on the -0.5 back in MLB.

          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Apr 16,2018 3:50 pm || Up

            I’d be happy to see the options used right now on both Graveman and Pagan.

            • Soaker Soaker Apr 16,2018 4:57 pm || Up

              I like Graveman as a #3 or #4 starter on a good team, but casting him as the Ace and Opening Day starter probably went to his head and got him trying to be something more than he is. Give him a few weeks in Nashville to get his mindset right and he can still have a good season in Oakland.
