Opening Day! 272

Eve, but I figured let’s get a thread up.

Dustin Fowler (pictured here reenacting the poster for “The 40 Year Old Virgin”) starts the year in AAA and remains in the Moonlight Graham category until further notice. Boog Powell is your centerfielder, and I guess there will be eight relievers again.

Trevor Cahill will join his old running mate Brett Anderson in AAA as well. Raul Alcantara will be there as well. He cleared waivers (again).

    I just noticed that there are no pre-Opening Day ESPN openers this year. Hooray for that.

      With the new CBA the Sunday night opener has effectively been replaced by the standalone game on the Thursday after the All Star Game (Cardinals @ Cubs this year).

      Another television change is that MLB gave Facebook 25 exclusive weekday afternoon games for Facebook Watch. “Exclusive” means these games won’t be on the team RSNs, the RSN streaming apps, MLB Network or MLB.tv (not live anyway; probably archived on MLB.tv). To see those games live you’ll have to use Facebook. The A’s aren’t involved in any of the four April games announced for that.

    Final rosterbation session for this offseason.

    Pitchers Paul Blackburn (forearm) and Ryan Dull (shoulder), catcher Josh Phegley (broken fingers) and infielder Renato Núñez (hamstring) will start the season on the 15-day DL. Núñez is out of options so would need to clear waivers if he isn’t placed on the 25-man roster once healthy.

    So Casilla does survive to March 29, and will be here until Dull comes back unless another reliever is DLed in the interim or, possibly, if Blackburn is activated and either goes to the bullpen himself or goes into the rotation and pushes Mengden into the bullpen.

    Somebody will take a chance on Núñez, if nothing else as a pinch-hitter in the NL.

    Marlins Man to God’s Puppy: Go FK Yourself.

    Leavy said Marlins representatives came to his office to discuss a deal but, according to Leavy, wound up only insulting him.

    “They said that I did nothing for the team, I don’t promote the Marlins, nobody buys season tickets because of me, nobody buys advertising because of me, and they don’t care what I do,” Leavy said.

    Said Leavy: “Derek Jeter is a Hall of Fame player and a virgin and inexperienced corporate owner and baseball manager of a team. I wish them luck and success, and I hope that they have a winning team in my lifetime.”

        The NBA schedule was already out when MLB dictated that everybody had to open on March 29. There may have been a sentiment of “gee, we haven’t tried daytime in almost 25 years, let’s go for it”, but regardless, with the Warriors game they were sort of forced to the afternoon.

            That’s what I’m saying. It doesn’t even have to be a good bunt, like you’re a speedster trying to lay one down and beat out the throw to first. Just make contact and get it towards 3B/SS and you’re on first, probably second base.

    After tweeting this tonight, Kaval has been busy retweeting people praising him and criticizing this Merc columnist.

    I can’t tell if the “fake news” bit is meant as a joke, given this (stupid) passage in the column:

    Since then, Kaval has taken pages out of the Donald Trump political playbook in order to distract from the fact that the team has no viable ballpark plan in sight: he tweets a bunch, he’s built his version of The Wall (the much-ballyhooed but ultimately inconsequential Treehouse bar in left field), and is picking fights with the team’s cross-bay rivals.

    • colin colin Mar 30,2018 6:36 am || Up

      The column was pretty stupid and that paragraph was definitely the stupidest part. I’m pretty sure that Kaval’s “fake news” was specifically riffing off it.

      It’s a weird FKing column. The writer actually seems pretty bullish on the A’s as a baseball team. He states the obviously true fact that their attendance sucks but then he assigns the blame for that on the fact that the Peralta site fell through? Does anyone really believe that Opening Day attendance would have been 35k with a different Peralta board of trustees vote? Besides that, his complaints are that the A’s built a bar in their stadium and have been tweaking the Giants on social media?

      • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 30,2018 8:04 am || Up

        Yeah that columnist understands neither the A’s nor Trump.

        The team was correctly criticized during the Wolff era for not investing in the Coliseum while trying to leave town. Now they are investing in the Coliseum while trying to stay in town. And somehow this guy portrays that as a bad thing.

        Last night on Twitter, Keith Olberman noted this issue, and Kaval said he was “on it.”

          If they’re doing live pre- and post-game TV from out there it’s probably best not to offer Denogginizer. The Drake’s stand on the lower concourse, Sec. 126 or thereabouts, has that. One of the lower-alcohol Drake’s IPAs would be fine.

                His hitting was good when he was a backup, then bad when he played every day. Maybe there is still some hope there. I would still like to see the A’s use their backup catcher (no matter who he is) a little more than they have in recent years.

              It’s really hard to keep them cold enough, and the pressure needed to push he beer up the lines would also over-carbonate it if I just used CO2 so I’d need a whole new gas system.

        Scioscia’s comments about limiting Ohtani’s use on his non-pitching days strikes me as more of an acknowledgement that Pujols will be irreparably broken by mid-May if he has to play first base four out of five days.

        After keeping the same stodgy format for the radio pregame show ever since Ray showed up, that’s quite a radical realignment they’ve done, with Ray no longer hosting any part of it and only getting a short segment near the beginning for his “How great is it?” interviews.

          I’m fine with him staying on the roster all year and throwing 80-90 innings, as long as they are all mop-up relief.

  112. Soaker Soaker Apr 1,2018 4:16 pm

    If you bozos would play better for the first 6 innings you wouldn’t have to settle for the teASes at the end.

    • andeux andeux Apr 1,2018 5:06 pm || Up

      Yeah.

      So far the hitting is (as expected) decent overall. While a couple of positions (CF, C) are obviously not great, there don’t seem to be any Plouffesque black holes.

      But between the thin rotation and the brutal defense they’re just going to be playing from behind too much. And while the bullpen is probably improved, if they have to go 4+ inning every day, they’re going to wear down quickly, even with an extra reliever on the roster.
