Stormy weather in Washington, but not in Arizona, from whence we get a rare treat today: televised AJ Puk (mlb.tv has the Brewers’ feed).

The Kensington police department may have some issues.

Chess news! Tomorrow in Berlin begins the Candidates Tournament to determine which of 8 top challengers will get to take on Magnus Carlsen for the world chess title (scheduled for November in London). Everyone plays everyone else twice (switching colors), with four games always going on at once. Most points at the end gets Magnus, with head-to-head results and then most wins as the tie-breakers.

Two Americans (Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So) made the field, and both have a reasonable shot to emerge.

Grill me up something tasty, people.

    Good breakdown of the Candidates from a French grandmaster who narrowly missed the cut.

    Isn’t Karjakin the one who faced, and nearly beat, Carlsen just over a year ago? Surprised to see him at the bottom. (Maybe I should RTFA?)

      The same. He was kind of a surprise to win the last Candidates Tournament, and apparently his play has been poorish since he lost to Magnus.

      In fairness, their point is still valid. But dropping a “Fake News” while accurate, isn’t something I’d want to associate with. The term itself has become like the word “literal”

        Yeah, that’s what put it over the top. But the bottom line is the refs really, really hate those “last two minute” reports that air out their most critical FK ups every night.

          I mean, he can’t be worse than some of what we had. But corners definitely age poorly and he could well prove to be a bad signing financially. that said, unless we hit our cap and can’t sign someone good–which seems unlikely–it’s hard to see him as anything other than a marginal improvement.

    • batgirl batgirl Mar 11,2018 12:16 pm || Up

      His whole thing about “it doesn’t make sense if you have to know the backstory…” is so nonsensical. I’d argue that the mascot is even cooler if it needs a bit of backstory. Now if it doesn’t make sense and there’s no backstory, then yes, it’s stupid.

      • dmoas Mar 11,2018 9:53 pm || Up

        It obviously depends on the backstory and how well it connects to the team, but yeah. I mean, how is requiring a back story that literally goes back to an 1900s rivalry with the team they’d eventually share “territory” with later in “life” not ramp up the score?

      Lil Miss Aces did a ranking several years ago and it was much better. A question about a sentence from your post – “Tomorrow in Berlin begins…”. I’m (hopefully) obviously not trying to be a dick here, but is this the best way to order time and place in the sentence (I don’t even know what to call words like “tomorrow” and “in Berlin” – they are not adverbs, right?)? I’m often asked to check Virginia’s posts and correspondence and generally would re-write that sentence as “… begins in Berlin tomorrow”, but now have my doubts. Thanks!

    • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 11,2018 9:34 am || Up

      “Tomorrow in Berlin begins…” is non-standard but not grammatically wrong. Classic would be “Begins tomorrow in Berlin” I think.

      "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
      • ptbnl Mar 11,2018 10:08 pm || Up

        I would have gone with “Tomorrow begins in Berlin … ” as the classic passive, but they’re all a little tortured.

        The other approach is the introductory clause: “Beginning tomorrow in Berlin, the Candidates Tournament will determine … “

      I believe Strunk, who is definitive on matters of style, would criticize GM’s failure to use the active voice (Rule 10). “The Candidates Tournament begins tomorrow in Berlin…” puts the subject right at the front of the sentence.

      • andeux andeux Mar 11,2018 10:45 am || Up

        Many people consider Strunk&White to be not at all definitive (which I think I learned here in an argument about whether “none” should be treated as singular or plural).

        In legal writing, the goal is clarity and concision, which means using the active voice when possible, and cutting words where possible.

      I think it has a great chance to be the first home forfeit in Oakland A’s history. A better idea would have been 1968 prices.

      Edit: The worst part is general admission, with all the seat-saving (and resulting fights), coats piled on seats, people leaving an empty seat between them and the next group. I don’t think you can plan on butts being in any more than 75%-80% of the seats.

        • Soaker Soaker Mar 16,2018 10:26 am || Up

          I have probably mentioned here before: Pre-Mt. Davis, going through and counting the numbers stamped into the wooden benches in the old bleachers, there were about 8000 “seats”. During the Finley years they rarely sold out and for World Series games I think those were sold as reserved seats. The new ownership and Billy Martin started bringing huge crowds on a regular basis. They sold 8000 general admission tickets and it was not a good scene, one fight after another. The solution was to cut off bleacher sales at somewhere a little north of 5000, around 2/3 of the stated capacity, and the problems pretty much ceased.

          If over 50,000 show up for this I think there will be some serious issues. I hope it’s a cold day with rain on and off. Worst case scenario is that we’re in the pantheon along with Disco Demolition Night and 10 Cent Beer Night.

      Latest Slusser:

      Several free agents remain on the market; Alex Cobb likely would be too expensive for the A’s and would cost the team a draft pick because he received a qualifying offer from the Rays. Among those still on the market: knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, former A’s starters Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, former Red Sox starters Clay Buchholtz and John Lackey; and San Mateo’s Scott Feldman, the longtime Rangers pitcher. One A’s source said the team would have to be convinced that any target would be better than the group of starters the team is currently looking at in camp; with the exception of Cobb, it’s uncertain if that would be the case.

      On the latter point: indeed. Lackey and Dickey are the only other ones I would expect to last in the rotation for more than a couple of months without getting hurt. Dickey was decent last year, but is 43. Lackey was pretty bad, is 39, and is John Lackey.

      On the payroll: she also wrote earlier in the week:

      The A’s stretched their projected payroll to $69.5 million by signing catcher Jonathan Lucroy earlier this week, so they’re unlikely to explore the free-agent market for another starter

      For context: their opening day payroll last year was over $80M, which was 27th out of 30 teams in the year. They can afford Cobb.

      Shouldn’t a match that breaks down into repetition checking be a win for the Checker? Maybe a weak one, but still seems lame not to receive some sort of partial credit.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Mar 20,2018 4:09 pm || Up

        Perpetual check seems pretty appropriately a draw. If you think of the ability to imminently capture your opponent’s king as the essential element of victory, perpetual check doesn’t accomplish that — it just makes it impossible for your opponent to ever capture your king.

        A lot of stalemates seem closer to wins on, like, a moral level.

        • dmoas Mar 20,2018 4:15 pm || Up

          If you back yourself into a position where all you can do is break a check, you’ve basically lost already. Granted, not all scenarios are the same. Conversely, perhaps a rule that disallows any re-Check position that you’ve played within 2 plays. Move, check. Right, check. Left, check disallowed, but forward/backward check allowed.

Beane/Forst must have that list near the top of the pile.

        I’m looking forward to some opening day pageantry after missing it the last two years. Between that and the 1 pm start time there’s not too much tailgating potential. But I plan to at least hang out in the lot a little bit pregame for anyone who cares to stop by.

            Between likely not being able to get there quite early enough, and going in by 12:30, I’m thinking I won’t have enough asphalt time to do a brunch tailgate right. Also the possible directed parking obstacle. So I was more inclined toward a flexible beer and burgers at 11ish approach.

    Caruana and Mamedyarov draw, leaving the American still a half point up on the Azerbaijani with four rounds to go. The Russian Grischuk lurks just one point back of Caruana, and they play in the final round.

    In other games, Kramnik gets off the schneid with another win over Aronian, while Ding is now 10/10 in draws.

    Caruana 6.5
    Mamedyarov 6
    Grischuk 5.5
    Karjakin 5
    Ding 5
    Kramnik 4.5
    So 4
    Aronian 3.5

        Things get weird if Mamedyarov gets another win, while he and Caruana otherwise draw out. That would leave them tied on head-to-head results and wins (3), meaning we would go the third tiebreaker: the Sonneborn-Berger Score:

        A player’s Neustadtl Sonneborn–Berger score is calculated by adding the sum of the conventional scores of the players he/she has defeated to half the sum of the conventional scores of those he/she has drawn against.

        The main point is to give more value for a win/draw against a player ranked high, than for a win/draw against a player ranked low in the tournament.

        I think this would favor Mamedyarov at this point. Caruana’s three wins have come against the bottom three in the table, while Mamedyarov beat current #4 Karjakin.

          Karjakin did indeed win yesterday, he has the white pieces today against Caruana with a chance to jump from fourth to first. Last candidates tournament, these two played in the last round and Karjakin’s win decided it (Caruana was runner up). It looks pretty even so far.

            If Karjakin pulls off the win, there will be 5 players within a half point, with two matches left to play.

      Ouch, and it doesn’t look like there’s any option for single-game purchasers to buy in advance for a discount.

      The downtown ballparks generally rely on private parking. Here’s a quick survey of some of the stadiums that are surrounded by large lots controlled by the team.

      Dodgers: $15 in advance, $25 at the gate
      Angels: $10
      Rangers: $18 in advance, $20 at the gate
      Royals: $15
      Brewers: $11 in advance, $12 at the gate weekdays; $12 in advance, $15 at the gate weekends and Cubs games
      Braves: Most lots $18, a few outer lots $16
      Rays: Convoluted, but appears to range from $15-$30 depending on lot and “premium games” with a 20% discount for prepayment.
      Marlins: $15 weekdays, $20 weekends

      Does anyone have an idea whether this is a reasonable offer? Or are the A’s low-balling the city/county?

      I went to check on newballpark.org and Marine Layer has a post up today that doesn’t mention the tweet but does reference this Matier & Ross column. ML’s take is

      We don’t know yet what the A’s are offering, but it’s likely to be at best a slight premium above the remaining debt on the Coliseum/Arena. Oakland and Alameda County might have entertained such a deal 10 years ago, but it shouldn’t now.

      So that makes it sound like an offer at the level of the debt only won’t get it done.

      • dmoas Mar 26,2018 12:06 pm || Up

        Well, they are saying *more* than the $135 million debt.

        But it would depend, in part, on whether the A’s lease alone can pay the debt payments. If it can’t, then the city/county is kind of screwed as they’ll have to handle maintenance for the property and have limited sales opportunity. It still would likely pencil out to being worth more than the debt, but I don’t know that the gains of having the debt off their backs and no longer having to worry about it combined with coming across team friendly wouldn’t be worth it.

        • Future Ed Future Ed Mar 26,2018 4:44 pm || Up

          its a deal like if my upstairs neighbors who apy $5600 a month in rent offered to take over the debt from the owners, which is probably a mortgage of less than $3000 a month.

          No thanks A’s! and Go A’s!

          I have $5. No I don\'t.
          • dmoas Mar 26,2018 4:59 pm || Up

            Depends. It could be like your upstairs neighbor locked into a multi-year lease for $3000/month when you owe $5000/month and can’t replace the tenants who are leaving. In that case, you may want to sell. You may sell to someone else willing to pay the $7500/month value it’s worth who wants to do something else with it. But they also have to assume the tenancy.

            You also have to consider if you’re having to put in maintenance costs. In your scenario, if you’re paying $3000/month in maintenance, selling may still be a better deal. I’m not saying that’s the case, but I doubt it’s quite that simple. Either way, the city/county will easily demand more. And should. It’s the A’s, you always assume they’re low balling, cause they are.

          • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 26,2018 5:36 pm || Up

            The City/County’s remaining $135M is a sunk cost, their obligation entirely regardless of what use a future owner of the site might envision. It’s irrelevant to what a fair market price for the land might be.

            Which is the answer to colin’s question. What the site it worth is exactly what someone else might be willing to pay for it. Would a developer pay, say, $200M for the land with the hopes of developing housing there? I’m not so sure they would; historically Oakland has never commanded that level of speculative investment, and in cases it has (Uptown, Oak Knoll, Brooklyn Basin) they have been substantially subsidized. Additionally, a future owner’s use of the site for anything except sports/entertainment would be subject to CEQA and other land use restrictions which are both costly and of uncertain outcome.

            To me City/County should negotiate terms to their benefit but definitely have an interest in reaching a deal with the A’s. It’s a bird in the hand, a buyer we know has the financing (unlike every other so-called offer they’ve gotten) who will use the land for things we want: retaining the A’s and developing the parking lot land to better uses, whether housing or retail or whatever. Also there’s the not-insubstantial “won’t fuck this up” quotient of a struck deal with the A’s, on the premise that otherwise the City/County probably would fuck it up. And it solves their $135M albatross problem.

            If there was a proven developer like Signature with plans for 1,000 housing units (20% minimum affordable) and ancillary stuff who was offering $250M or more in cash, then sure, a strapped City/County would be derelict not to explore that. Otherwise, though, they should get it done and realize some real value for their currently underwater asset. Plus keep the A’s as they build a privately financed ballpark. So much win.

      Anyone know if there is reason to think that any particular part of the Coliseum site is better for a new ballpark than the rest? Is it where the arena sits?

      • dmoas Mar 27,2018 2:26 pm || Up

        Best guess is they put it where the arena is just so that they can continue to play until it’s ready. But I’d imagine that tween spot would be best to center ancillary stuff around it. Then again, the arena site would force people to go through a business district before reaching the stadium. Good question though.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 27,2018 2:30 pm || Up

        There’s a major utility easement which runs between current Coliseum and Arena, thought has been this makes construction easier in North/66th Ave lot.

        Also Oracle Arena still has good economic utility, every plan I saw had that staying active. Might be a different story if site was 100% private.

        • Soaker Soaker Mar 27,2018 3:38 pm || Up

          Between the Warriors’ new place and the Sharks arena, it seems like Oracle would have to settle for not that much more than what the Cow Palace gets now. At some point the opportunity cost of keeping the arena rather than putting that space to alternate use, plus the maintenance cost of the building, would justify the cost of demolition. I like dmoas’ idea of forcing BART passengers to walk through Restaurant Row; reminds me of the setup at the Arizona Coyotes’ arena.

    Caruana and Mamedyarov both win somewhat spectacularly, while Karjakin quickly drew.

    Caruana (USA) 8
    Mamedyarov (AZE) 7.5
    Karjakin (RUS) 7.5

    Ding is still playing against Kramnik needing a win to stay alive. It doesn’t look like he’ll get it.

    Tomorrow’s final round:

    Gischuk – Caruana
    Karjakin – Ding
    Kramnik – Mamedyarov

    Caruana obviously clinches with a win. If he draws, he only wins the tournament if neither Mamedyarov nor Karjakin wins, as they would both have the tiebreak over him. (If Caruana loses, he needs both of the other two to lose.)

    If Karjakin and Mamedyarov both win tomorrow (or both draw while Caruana loses), Mamedyarov wins the tournament because he beat Karjakin in Round 1.

    EDIT: Ding drew to go to 7 points, but it turns out he is still alive despite losing the “most wins” tiebreak to Caruana. If he wins, Caruana loses, and Mamedyarov draws, they will all be tied with 8, and Ding would have the most points from H2H matchups among the three (1W, 3D).

        Or Farmers Day, with the pregame greased pig chase and a cow-milking contest between a player from each team. Catfish Hunter got the cow-milking duty unless he was pitching that day. As for prizes, in a signature gesture by Charlie, one of the lucky ticket holders got to take home a ton of fertilizer.

      The A’s just need to quietly get a teetotaler first baseman, then stick a keg right next to first base. Would solve that problem.

    Carlsen (NOR) vs. Caruana (USA) for the title.

      Awesome. Can we already say he is the best American player since Fischer?

        I think we could already say that. Now certainly.

      Liren Ding goes undefeated.

      So/Aronian was a real agree-a-quick-draw-and-go-to-the-pub game, though a win for So would have left him tied for 5th rather than 7th.

      If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.

        On the other end of the table, Caruana and Grischuk played on even after (1) Caruana got a dominant position, (2) Mamedyarov and Karjakin had drawn meaning he needed only a draw himself to clinch, and (3) Karjakin needed a draw to finish fifth instead sixth, a difference of 12,000 euros in prize money.

        I guess either Caruana really loves every Elo point he can grab, or Grischuk thought taking a draw he hadn’t earned would be unsporting.

      Can anybody name the last high ceiling A’s pitcher that DIDN’T have arm issues?

      This is not just a coincidence anymore. I mean, aside from pitching just being really really bad for you.

      And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

      Thanks, and go As.

        Would Sonny have counted as high ceiling? On the other hand, wasn’t Strailey viewed as high ceiling enough to the point that he was too untouchable to be included in a potential Hanley trade in 2012?

          Sonny missed time with forearm tightness multiple times though.

        How many high end pitching prospects across baseball avoid arm issues? They seem pretty rare.

    FK everything, including those scouts who told Slusser to tell us not to worry.

        Just there for the free food. The Impossible Burger they served to the press was excellent. The one I had last Sunday in the Shibe Park Tavern was just okay.

          Yeah, that’s the problem, the Executive Chef isn’t preparing the ones that are served at the concession stands. The shawarma looked good in the video, but what a waste of money in person.

    The A’s and Dodgers have a home-and-home interleague series this season. What a battle it will be.

    Outfielder Andrew Toles was on second base when the pipes burst. He thought the liquid was Gatorade tossed from the stands. His nostrils soon told him otherwise.

    “I smelled it,” Toles said. “It was nasty. I’m not going to tell you what it really was, that’s kind of messed up. But, yeah, it was nasty, man. It was a tragic thing.”

    Name of the Year bracket is out.

    I like:
    Dr. Narwhals Mating
    Salami Blessing
    Makenlove Petit-Fard
    Mosthigh Thankgod
    Delicious Peters
    Chardonnay Beaver
    Quindarious Gooch

    With honorable mentions to Corky Boozé, for representing the East Bay, and Candida Seasock, for sounding like a Pynchon character.

      Yeah Delicious Peters is way underseeded as a #9, I’m picking him (?) to upset the #1 LaRoyce Lobster-Gaines and advance at least to the Elite Eight/
