That was Conte trying to get sacked so he can get the big payoff and manage Italy.

The only result that made a difference for Chelski was a win … drawing, losing 1-0 or losing 10-0 all locked them into 5th place and out of the Champions League. Their game plan made no sense.

To me the story here isn’t the mathematical genius at play (though full props to Jerry for making it pay). It’s how negligently stupid the Michigan lottery was in creating the game.

Yeah, the article doesn’t get into the details, but I imagine there are a handful of lottery vendors who work for multiple states, using three same or similar games. Like Diebold. Um…

This seems like a pretty healthy situation.

Privately, some aides have expressed frustration that Mr. Kushner and his wife, the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump, have remained at the White House, despite Mr. Trump at times saying they never should have come to the White House and should leave. Yet aides also noted that Mr. Trump has told the couple that they should keep serving in their roles, even as he has privately asked Mr. Kelly for his help in moving them out.

maybe there’s a partial explanation in here.

basically, release no singles and force album sales around a hit song. or, release limited runs of singles, enough to register on the billboard chart, and still drive album sales.

lepp started before that period, but after hysteria they align with it pretty well.

Interesting, but that assumes they had some radio hits post-H that could carry an album. Maybe in the UK, but not here.

the hypothesis is that one-hit-wonders can be made to go platinum by not releasing the relevant single. like vanilla ice.

and once they discovered that, they modified the theory for career groups. like pearl jam not releasing singles and maybe thus causing their overall top sales in grunge.

and at some moment he mentioned def leppard and i was chopping carrots or something so i missed it. now i have to 2x that epp till i find it or it’s gonna bug me. sheesh.

ok, i totally scrambled the timeline. def leppard was the previous mode. the mega album. 5, 6, 7 singles milked over 2 years. michael jackson’s bad, bruce springteen’s born in the usa.

then the labels were all, this is not that profitable for how hard it is to achieve. then… the stuff we already talked about.

At least for now, the Astros, showing perhaps a bit of the dickishness that comes with a World Series championship, will only sell single-game tickets online to purchasers having a credit card issued in Texas or Louisiana. I was giving some thought to bagging the April Texas trip anyway and applying the money to next year’s Hawai’i (/Costa Rica/Aruba) trip, so maybe that gives me the needed push.

      • Soaker Soaker Mar 8,2018 12:01 pm || Up

It still says that on their ticket ordering page. Last week I went through the process of ordering tickets for the three A’s games in April, entered my CC number on the payment page and was rejected on that basis.

When that happened, they gave me a sales department phone number to call. Calling that, the choice was wait in the queue or leave a message and have a sales rep call back. I left the message, and a week later they have not called back.

I looked at how much money I was considering spending on a week in Texas, felt I was being too obsessive about the baseball trips and decided to drop the whole thing. Somehow denying the Astros, the Rangers, the cities of Arlington and Houston and that obnoxious state all that ticket, hotel, restaurant, rental car and tax money feels cathartic. I haven’t been to Dodger Stadium in years and that’s driveable so that will be my quick April baseball road trip fix instead.

If anyone’s thinking they want to read 5,000 well-crafted words on boxing this morning, here you go. The view from a sharp of the machinations in the heavyweight division. Listening to a few innings of the Ken/Vince/Ray broadcast yesterday reminded me that the spring training broadcasts have been increasingly unlistenable in recent years due to the excess of off-topic babble. A lot of it is instigated by Ray but Ken and Vince don’t do nearly enough to keep it to baseball. The guys they’ve had doing the midweek online broadcasts post-Buan at least take the job more seriously. I don’t make much a point of listening to spring games on the radio anyway, though occasionally I’ll have it on for a little while, but I will now make a point of avoiding the regular announcers until March 29.

When Ray is on radio in the regular season he treats it like it’s his day off and he doesn’t have to be serious, but Ken and Vince are pretty quick to refocus on the game action. Nobody cares that much about the details of play-by-play in the spring so Ray gets a lot more leeway to ramble on with his silly flippant comments and it makes for a terrible broadcast for the listener. I appreciate that it’s tough to broadcast exhibition games in any sport but a level of professionalism should be maintained, and I find the spring broadcasts don’t live up to that standard.

If they said “forget offense at that spot” and just took the two best defensive catchers they could find, I would guess they would have a cover-your-eyes spot in the batting order which would generate an OPS of something like .500, maybe a little higher considering the contributions of pinch hitters. But Maxwell/Phegley probably won’t do a lot better than .650. The question is worth asking.

If you live in the Puget Sound area you haven’t seen the sun since sometime in September, and sure you can do something else in the Phoenix area during the day but the whole point of the trip would be sitting out in the not-too-intense sunshine to watch meaningless baseball. The Mariners are the majority shareholder in their RSN so it’s entirely their decision and I’m sure the motivation is to drive ticket sales at Safeco Field, but I hope their attendance in Peoria suffers badly because of it.

The “Marine Layer” situation as relayed by Slusser is most unfortunate. However, the family needs to be more diligent about exploring insurance options through federal COBRA or Cal-COBRA (if the employer is a small business).

On Jan 21st 2018, my twin brother Rhamesis Muncada suffered a massive seizure followed by series of multiple strokes due to complications of extreme Hypertension and at that time undiagnosed Diabetes….This week we just found out that his employer was unfortunately unable to hold his employment due to his indefinite absence from work, which also means that his insurance will cease to cover any further medical expenses. Our plan is to try to admit him to Barrows Neurological acute rehab facility for more OT/PT/SLP but with this recent change of employment, and insurance that possibility is now out of our control.

    • 5Aces 5Aces Mar 8,2018 9:08 am || Up

Agreed. When I have been moving from jobs I have always laughed at the COBRA notices because of the cost. But in a situation like this there is no way it is worse than the alternatives.

      • Soaker Soaker Mar 8,2018 11:03 am || Up

That sticker shock you get when an employer is no longer paying its share of your insurance premium is one of the nastier ones you’ll receive. Before ACA kicked in I had a few years where I had a very bare-bones plan that I was afraid to use for anything short of a catastrophe because the insurance companies could still drop the customer, and I let a few issues go longer than they should have for that reason, including the hypertension issue which appears to have contributed to his problem (Why hadn’t you dealt with that, man, and why was the diabetes undiagnosed? Fear of doctors?). When ACA fully kicked in I brought everything up to speed including getting the blood pressure into the acceptable range. (The first time I went in for a physical under ACA, the nurse took my BP and told the doctor the numbers, then the doctor took my BP himself, then the doctor yelled for the EKG cart.)

Paying for coverage, whether COBRA, Marketplace or just buying direct from an insurance company will be very expensive and a financial challenge if he doesn’t have much in savings, but the request should be phrased as help with the insurance and whatever portion of the expenses insurance doesn’t cover. This request reads like insurance isn’t an option and he has to pay for services directly, and that’s not a realistic way to go about it.

        • andeux andeux Mar 8,2018 11:34 am || Up

Last time I was out of work (just before ACA started to take effect) I did COBRA for a couple of months and then switched to an individual high-deductible plan which was less than half the cost. I ended up having four different changes to my insurance in a little over a year:
Kaiser through old job -> Kaiser through COBRA (same plan) -> Kaiser individual plan -> insurance through contracting agency (new job was contract to hire) -> insurance through permanent job.
Then switched back to Kaiser when my employer made that available a year or two later.

I didn’t have any health issues, so it was all just paperwork, but it really highlighted the insanity of having health insurance tied to employment.

Fangraphs is a little late to the prospect party, but here’s their order for A’s top 10:

    1 A.J. Puk
    2 Franklin Barreto
    3 Jorge Mateo
    4 Dustin Fowler
    5 Jesus Luzardo
    6 Sean Murphy
    7 Austin Beck
    8 Lazaro Armenteros
    9 Sheldon Neuse
    10 James Kaprielian

There appears to be pretty good consensus on those top 5 as the same 5 names are on all the lists and in a pretty similar order. The bottom 5 has more variability but all of these guys have been on other lists in similar spots.

The trades over the last nine months look very solid right now.

-All five of the prospects coming back in the Doo/Madson/Gray trades look like non-busts (pending Kaprelian’s return), and there was a late-inning major league reliever in there as well.
-Two months of Alonso brought back a guy who can play centerfield in the majors in a pinch.
-Healy brought back a solid young reliever and a legitimate teenage shortstop prospect.
-And of course Plouffe and cash brought back cash.

I’m still not sold on any of the NY guys:
            – Mateo: we could certainly use speed, but I’m worried that the other tools won’t measure up.
            – Fowler: the injury and subsequent lost development time, plus he was a recent riser based on a good half-season at AAA, not exactly a can’t miss prospect.
            – Kaprielian: injuries again. Better draft pedigree than Fowler, but has barely seen the field professionally.

OTOH, Neuse, Luzardo and Treinen for a couple of good not great relievers is a FKin-A trade if either of the prospects pans out, and so far both look very promising.

The “Ballpark Pass” has been replaced by a “Treehouse Pass” which gets you access only to the Treehouse for $30/month, $150/year.

“Access to the rest of the Coliseum and all the amenities it has to offer can be secured on a game-by-game basis via a paid upgrade fee.”

So they aren’t selling tickets in that second deck below the upper suites in the outfield any more; that’s all a GA section which is part of the “Treehouse”.

Also they aren’t selling tickets in very many sections in the third deck. Even for Opening Day, only 311 through 323 are for sale. Most games it’s just 314 through 320. I can’t imagine Kaval would reinstall the tarps so I guess ticketing for those additional third deck sections would be opened on an as-needed basis.

That was the 3rd deck sales practice last year too. Mostly it worked ok, but it did seem like they were too slow to open additional sections on pace with rising demand. Led to odd situations at, say, fireworks games, where someone buying 2 weeks ahead could only get crappy row 2 seats in Sec 310, then someone buying the day before the game could get a reasonable row 10 seat in Sec 307.

can we start a 5 person “posse” roster for him and moss and a few others I like to have around for quotes and stuff?

Anyone watching Peaky Blinders on Netflix? I’m two seasons in (of 4), it’s good but not great, but mostly I just cannot get the fantastic Nick Cave song Red Right Hand out of my head. It’s haunting.

Disagree on the not great part. It is solidly in my top tier.
Another period piece crime drama I really like is Babylon Berlin.

We may just have a definitional difference, great in my case meaning Top 10-20 all time. It’s very good, but a few too many convenient plot contrivences to make my upper tier.

It also amuses me greatly that Netflix makes the default subtitles on. I thought that was silly, then tried without only to give up after 10 minutes of thick baffling accents.

I’ve loved it (though, as is so often the case, the later seasons haven’t held up to the first), in part because it provides a counterpoint view of that period in British history to Downton FKing Abbey.

And Cillian Murphy is so damn sexy its not true.

Er, it is subtitled. I thought that was the question. (Maybe there is also a dubbed option, I don’t know.)

It loaded dubbed for me, but I hadn’t even thought to switch to subtitles. Mrs. N might even like hearing the German since she can still generally follow it.

There’s a lot too much repetitive zero-motion dialogue for me, but I did finish and largely enjoy the show. Agree with Andeux ptbnl it dropped off in the later seasons.

The show Mrs. N and I just devoured is Love Sick (which is witty, wife-friendly, and gets extra points for originally being called “Scrotal Recall”)

        (fixed)
While I won’t quibble with the first season being the best, Tom Hardy’s Alfie Solomon in some of the later season is probably my favorite character. Steals every scene he is in.

I liked Lovesick, but found Evie (and to a lesser extent Dylan) kind of unlikable, which made the main story arc not so exciting. The supporting characters were good. Peep Show was another British sitcom about twentysomethings that I liked more, but it looks like it’s not on Netflix any more.

Many of us are of the age where a trip to Toys R Us was maybe the highlight of the weekend even if Dad or Mom didn’t buy anything. Sadly, it looks like they are in their final death spiral and will beat Sears and Kmart to the retail morgue.

Toys R Us Inc. is making preparations for a liquidation of its bankrupt U.S. operations after so far failing to find a buyer or reach a debt restructuring deal with lenders, according to people familiar with the matter.

While the situation is still fluid, a shutdown of the U.S. division has become increasingly likely in recent days…
