Down at the Angela Sun-set Grill 285

Many of these remaining free agents dominoes should fall in the next couple weeks, and I’m sure Jed Lowrie is checking his text messages many times a day to see if he’s still an Oakland Athletic. Kendall Graveman is the remaining arb-eligible Athletic who hasn’t settled. I think they can work this one out.

In a slightly related to baseball note, mentioned mainly because it provides a link to cook on the Grill, “The Catcher Was a Spy” debuts at Sundance this week. And, of course, we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration. I haven’t lined up the porn star for his next trip to our celebrity golf tournament yet but I should have some interviews scheduled soon.

We’re inside a month until pitchers and catchers report to Mesa (February 15). Meanwhile, have another beer.

Yeah your reports from past Tahoe golf parties somehow omitted the hook up scene. What did Mark Mulder know and when did he know it?!

This might be the worst punny grill title ever. Which is to say, I laughed.

I read the Moe Berg book 20 years ago or so, and my memory is that his life made for a good longform article, but is a bit thin for a full-length bio (or biopic). As a spy, he was not exactly James Bond. (See e.g. the reviews on the wiki page.)

I’ll be interested to see how they draw for the Thursday afternoon opener. The A’s tradition has been Opening Night, and the few times they have tried a daytime opener they didn’t draw as well and went back to night the following year. I don’t think daytime has been tried again in over 20 years, so I suppose why not see what happens.

I’ll do my usual 2 or 3 trips to Oakland, typically night game followed by a day game. Also of note this season, the A’s host Seattle on Labor Day weekend, when Cal opens the season by hosting the Tar Heels at Memorial Stadium; early season football TV schedule is set early so the start time of the football game would usually be announced in May or June.

I have a tentative plan to go to Provo (!) the following week to see Cal on the road, but would be glad to join/”host” you in Berkeley if you were interested. Granted, Labor Day is a time when people have other plans…which also means tickets won’t be a problem, especially with Cal coming off another 5-7 season.

I haven’t mapped out my summer that far yet, but a visitor’s trip to Memorial Stadium could be fun. Moreso than visiting Provo I have to believe.

The Grand Irony is moving to a place that everybody wants to come to for their vacation, and then realizing that Travel is by far the biggest line item in your annual budget, because there are other things on the agenda.

The 2018 Sports Trips are A’s in Arlington/Houston in April, A’s in Denver in July, that trip to Provo (8 hours drive from here) and whatever trips I make for A’s in Oakland (generally decided a few days in advance). I haven’t been to spring training since 2015 but when I saw the April Texas trip on the schedule I diverted the spring training money to that one.

My observation is that over the last 20 years Opening Day has become a much bigger “thing” in Oakland. The festive parking lot atmosphere stacks up well against other cities. I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll do well with a daytime opener, if the weather cooperates.

My goodness. That’s higher than Everest Base Camp. Do you have to acclimatize on your way up?

      • colin colin Jan 17,2018 10:06 am || Up

I haven’t gone to the top of Cerro Chajnantor, but I have hung around the plateau quite a bit (~5000m). I think I pretty much always spent a night first in San Pedro de Atacama (2400m). While working, we generally used supplemental oxygen, partly for comfort and partly to avoid making stupid mistakes. Some people preferred to put on their oxygen tank for the drive up from San Pedro and leave it on the whole day.

      • ptbnl Jan 17,2018 10:22 am || Up

As Colin says, for the telescopes on the flanks of Cerro Toco (5200m) a night in San Pedro is required and supplemental oxygen is available, and we all used it when I went with the family in the spring.

For the top of Cerro Chajnantor they’re requiring 2 nights in San Pedro and the intervening day spent at the site on Cerro Toco, and the oxygen is no longer optional.

The crazy thing is that people used to walk up there to mine the sulphur by hand.

Puk and Luzardo are Nos. 2 and 8 on MLB’s Top-10 LHP prospects.

  9. Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Jan 17,2018 11:44 am

BA has their top prospect list out:
    1. A.J. Puk, LHP
    2. Franklin Barreto, SS/2B
    3. Jorge Mateo, SS/OF
    4. Dustin Fowler, OF
    5. Jesus Luzardo, LHP
    6. Austin Beck, OF
    7. Sean Murphy, C
    8. James Kaprielian, RHP
    9. Lazaro Armenteros, OF
    10. Logan Shore, RHP

Pretty similar to both BP and Minor League Ball with Puk, Barreto, Mateo, Fowler, Luzardo, Beck, Armenteros and Murphy all appearing on all 3 lists and in similar orders. Some small differences on the back end but still a fair bit of agreement. BA ranks Murphy higher than either of the other two publications (he’s #10 on both the others) and Holmes is #8 on both the other lists but he’s not here.

Whoa, harsh! MLB says it can unilaterally implement

…a 20-second pitch clock, regardless of whether or not any runners are on base, with the clock able to reset if the pitcher steps off the rubber. A pitcher will get one warning per game for violating the clock, and he’ll be penalized with one ball per violation after that. As for mound visits, any trip to the mound by a manager, coach or player—or trip off the mound by a pitcher to talk to another player—will count as a visit…

That seems pretty Draconian for the little benefit. My question is what about the batters? If I still get to do my Nomar OCD shit all the time it feels a bit off.

I dont care about the 10 minutes and I think the speed discussions have been overdone anyways outside of Yanks Sox games. But at the same time I have no issue with not having to see 37 catcher visits an inning.

I totally fine with the pitch clock. But that visit thing is bullshit.

      • dmoas Jan 19,2018 10:10 am || Up

And they’re still focusing in the wrong place. Reduce the time by cutting in-between inning time. Except for nationally televised games, they don’t need more than a minute or so to swap sides and get ready. And they can start using the mound visits for live ads to replace between innings where they’re more likely to be seen.

I don’t mind the pitch clock mostly because it’s been part of the rules for them to pitch within a certain amount of time anyway and all it does is lead to enforcement of it. For most pitchers it’s no big deal, but some take forever and there’s no need for it. But yeah, the mound thing is bull.

Thinking about this a little more today, frustration with some guys like Hahn who have been injured a lot and then didn’t make any progress when they were healthy was likely a leading factor in the demotion of Curt Young from Green and Gold to orange and black.

Curt did have one overachiever in his latter years, Graveman, but he has succumbed to the injury bug as well.

I thought it was a really interesting piece. It has been building for a few years, but this offseason is really making the point that something is broken in the economics of baseball. Good cost-controlled players are so valuable and there is little penalty for losing seasons, so it makes sense to trade away stars and tank to gamble on the chance of getting a core of youngsters that break out at the same time. I don’t know how they are going to course-correct though, because I think there are several factors:

      1. Current CBA structure, especially the low salaries for first three years and draft pick compensation on free agent signings
      2. Increased revenue coming from long term TV deals, which doesn’t depend on fielding competitive teams
      3. Improved statistical evaluation leading to tighter agreement between clubs on player value and more appreciation for young players

#3 isn’t going anywhere. You’d have to pry #2 out of the owner’s cold dead hands. The one solution I can imagine is to increase revenue sharing and impose a salary floor at some fraction of league revenues. Otherwise, it just makes too much sense for teams to tank their way through a long rebuild and then make a shot when the conditions are perfect.

      • dmoas Feb 2,2018 2:23 pm || Up

I’ve always figured that should tie things to top/bottom payroll.

Teams in the top 5% of payroll who make the playoffs:
        1st year, no penalty.
        2nd year, lose 1st pick.
        3rd year, lose 1st & 2nd picks.
So on until first 5 are lost.

Teams in the bottom 5% of payroll who fail to make the playoffs:
        1st year, no penalty.
        2nd year, lose first pick.
        3rd year, lost 1st & 2nd picks.
So on until first 5 are lost.

Must be consecutive years of both payroll position and playoff status otherwise the clock starts over.

For FA signing, no lost pick, just an insertion of the team losing the pick into the draft, teams in the top 5% of payroll don’t gain the pick.

Fangraphs just posted the top 100 from KATOH, which is a purely stats-based projection tool (as opposed to KATOH+, which also folds in scouting grades). By those numbers, the A’s only have three in the top 100:

        29. A.J. Puk
        37. Franklin Barreto
        38. Dustin Fowler

The algorithm also really likes Kevin Merrell, who would have snuck into the top 50 except that he is a 2017 draftee who only has 140 PA with the Lake Monsters.

    • Soaker Soaker Feb 5,2018 3:44 pm || Up

I was thinking about the comparison between Daric Barton and Franklin Barreto, both among the A’s top “can’t miss” type position players in recent years. Barton was age 22 at the start of the 2008 season, having been in the A’s system for 3 seasons and getting 84 PA at the major league level in 2007. Barreto will be 22 at the start of the 2018 season, having been in the A’s system for 3 seasons and getting 76 PA at the major league level in 2017.

This led me to follow the BP links to their lists in past seasons. I didn’t go all the way through the top 100, just the top 50.

      2007
None (Barton was the highest at 62)

      2008
Barton 22, Carlos Gonzalez 26, Fautino de los Santos 46, Brett Anderson 50

      2009
Michael Ynoa 20, Trevor Cahill 23, Anderson 24, Chris Carter 48

      2010
      Carter 11, Michael Taylor 20

      2011
      Carter 30, Grant Green 49

      2012
Michael Choice 39, Jarrod Parker 50. A sidenote states Yoenis Cespedes would have been placed at 20 if he were eligible for the list.

      2013
      Addison Russell 22

      2014
      Russell 7

      2015
None (Barreto was the highest at 74)

      2016
      Barreto 26, Sean Manaea 45

      2017
      Barreto 47

Barreto isn’t exactly headed the right direction on BP’s list or the Baseball America lists GM posted above.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Feb 6,2018 10:14 am || Up

I just noticed that Fangraphs lists Barreto as a CF, because that’s where they think he should play. Odd.

its been 20 years, but I imagine the big spots like the old center of campus where Royce and powell are. Powell is the library, pretty.

along bruin walk (from Pauley to Royce) Starting at Pauley. You pass the wooden center on your left. Cool place if you are in your 30s and want to go to a top notch gym but not so much in your late teens early 20s.

Then you encounter the bear where your dad wants a picture. but as you look towards campus, you can close your eyes and remember seeing the melvins, god head silo and yo la tengo and smile to yoiurselves as frat bros got all kinds of confused by king buzzo and the knock out on heroin lori black.

Continuing up bruin walk, Cooper union (the coop, not the Co-op) is on your where food shops are and where I saw Billy bragg in high school, 87 or 88.

Just beyond the coop, the kerkoff steps (leading to the coffee shop) where we sat until they shut it after the northridge quake. Now you have to make choices, going forward up the hill to your right is “South Campus” where the sciences live, forward and to the left ins “north campus” where us dummies learn. I recommend going north first.

On the walk you’ll see the lawns were we ended up after the quake. At the top, royce on the left, powell library to the right. Look around those places, they are neat. (I think there is a museum around there too but I can’t recall)

around there is Campbell hall where 2 black panthers were shot and killed. Pay respects.

continuing up and to the right between royce and a building where I had earth space science, you get to north campus. URL is University Research library, I spent most of my time there. also checking my email (izzy8ln@somethingsomething.ucla.something.something.edu). Also, inside there was a plaque commemorating the person the place was named after, hugh g dick. I’m not joking. seems its gone.

to the left is bunche hall. Yes we took your song and your black guy soaker/gm. It looks like a waffle iron. north of that is the sculpture garden. go there. also check to see what is showing up there around the art school (name unknown).

Head south from there for science. I don’t know much about that place except I drank PBRs with my BFF upon graduation at the inverted fountain. tradition calls for champagne, but that felt wrong to us.

My friend, who I didn’t know there but do now, reminds me you should check out the dorms, where some vanilla ice mf’er once replied “just countin my money” in response to my “what’s going on?” question.

the dorms are up the other hill past the tennis center from pauley.

Yeah, the vacation rentals are a huge local issue. When I’m over in South Lake Tahoe I get to say “I can’t sign your petition because I’m a Nevada resident” but the last few meetings of our HOA have been dominated by this argument and the need to set a policy. I don’t have strong feelings; units on either side of me are VHRs and I haven’t had any issues with any of the visitors, and it’s nice that the places are always empty during the week and frequently (except in the summer) on weekends too. Evidently some lenders charge a higher interest rate if the percentage of VHRs in a development is above XX%, and to me that’s the limit, but otherwise I’m neutral on the effect on property values.

Would be an awful lot of revenue for any city to walk away from, I gotta believe.

Winners would mostly be the hotel and motel owners, whom I suspect are contributing to the petition drive.

My general observation walking around town, not just in our townhouse development, is that the stereotype of a bunch of kids renting a place for the weekend and throwing noisy parties is way, way overstated. At worst, the nice thing about “short-term rentals” is the “short” part; if you do happen to get some jerks next door, they’ll be gone by Sunday night. A 5-month rental to a group of seasonal ski resort employees has a good chance of being worse. Anyway, I just don’t see problems happening often enough to justify nullifying a private property owner’s right to rent out their property, but if there are issues with a specific property there can be some enforcement against the owner to keep that under control. Also, the VHR owner has an incentive to make their property **nicer** in order to get good reviews on HomeAway and similar sites for a better occupancy rate.
