      Two ways that immediately came to my mind:

      1) He doesn’t want his ass on the same seat as Obama.
      2) His ass is so big he broke the seat within a week.

        Maybe Obama loosened the bolts on it before leaving and the big guy fell in.

      At every point, when faced with the choice, Team Trump picked a loyalist hack over a political pro in deciding how to build its administration. To predictably incompetent/disasterous/hilarious results. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

        The best thing is that Obama reportedly specifically told Trump during their private meeting after the election “Don’t hire Flynn. He’s dirty and unreliable.”

        That probably guaranteed that Flynn would get the job.

    You could have killed it in committee!

    • ptbnl Dec 1,2017 3:38 pm || Up

      So how is it they can rewrite the bill after it has left committee?

      If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 1,2017 3:40 pm || Up

        Amendments can be made on the floor. Even an amendment that replaces the entire text of the bill.

        • ptbnl Dec 1,2017 3:55 pm || Up

          Are these amendments that are being proposed on the floor and voted on, or behind-the-scenes rewrites?

          If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 1,2017 4:04 pm || Up

            My understanding is that they are rewriting it behind the scenes, and then there will be a vote on replacing whatever came out of committee with what ever came out of the smoky room. Then I guess some votes on other amendments that will fail.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 1,2017 3:47 pm || Up

      They are apparently rewriting the thing so quickly that the new text is being handwritten in to the margins of the old bill. This is disgraceful.

      Biggest snub…….Matt Stairs?

      50 is a lot of players.

      • andeux andeux Dec 4,2017 9:45 am || Up

        Did a quick check against b-ref franchise leaders in WAR.
        Of the top 51 position players, going down to 14 WAR, 23 played for the Oakland version. All are on the list except Rick Monday (14 WAR in Oakland, plus 2 in KC).
        On the pitching list, there are only 7 with that many WAR: Catfish, Vida, Stew, Eck, the big 3. In the next batch Rollie (12.1), Gray (11.4), Holtzman (10.9) and Welch (10.9) made the cut while Harden (13.0) Langford (11.5), Haren (11.4) and Duchscherer (10.7) did not. So it definitely seems like the non-big 3 pitchers of the 2000s got snubbed, in favor of either older pitchers or recent hitters.
        OTOH, like you say, 50 is a lot. We’re not talking about all-time greats at that point on the list, just players who had 3-4 good years here.

          • andeux andeux Dec 4,2017 11:04 am || Up

            Looking at some of the lesser players:
            Weiss (7.4) – ROY + WS teams
            Vogt (7) – fan favorite, walkoff in playoffs
            Byrnes (6.7) – “fan favorite”
            Hatteberg (5.4) – Game 20 + Moneyball
            Braden (5.3) – Perfect game
            Davis (5.3) – Will likely add to total
            Young (3.8) – Long time coach
            Hurt (3.6) – 1 great year + HOF career elsewhere
            Dye (2.8)

            Dye has to be the biggest WTF on the list. Good play for two months in 2001, then broke his leg in the playoffs, and the rest of his A’s career was an expensive bust. Byrnes is pretty bad too, of course.

            How great is it, Ray, knowing that your slash line with Oakland was .222/.262/.320, and with your A’s WAR being 2.1, or 1.7 fWAR, when you look and see yourself on the 50th Anniversary Oakland team, plus being on Melissa Lockard’s GM’s 25-man Oakland A’s roster, and also when you go to Progressive Field seeing a plaque with your name on it on the Indians’ Wall of Fame out in center field, how great is that?

                By value Suzuki, who (in spite of all the hate he got here in the later part of his tenure) had a very good A’s career (12 WAR).
                I wouldn’t quibble with Ramon (9 WAR) who was about as valuable on a rate basis, started for the four playoff teams, and provided one of the single greatest moments of those years.

                  And Dwayne Murphy, who might be the most underrated player in Oakland history. He’s #7 in Oakland WAR, won 6 Gold Gloves and hit #2 behind Rickey when Rickey was in his peak base-stealing years. Not much of a batting average guy but could draw a walk and had fair HR power.

                  Armas should definitely slot in ahead of Byrnes or Dye. It’s not a terrible outcome for a “fan vote” (which I was aware of, but I don’t participate in those things) but if we’re doing 50 I could do a better job with #41-50. 20, in honor of the streak:

          LF: Rickey, Rudi
          CF: Murph
          RF: Reggie, Canseco
          3B: Chavez, Bando (this is a strong field)
          SS: Tejada, Campy
          2B: Ellis
          1B: McGwire, Giambi
          C: Steinbach
          SP: Catfish, Vida, Stew, Hudson
          RP: Rollie, Eck

          That’s 19 and we need a play-in for #20: Green, Hendu, Donaldson, Lansford

          • Soaker Soaker Dec 4,2017 1:28 pm || Up

            Having had a little time to digest it, Dick Green doesn’t belong in that play-in. Hendu and Donaldson had higher A’s WAR in much shorter tenures than Green, and Green got some of his in Kansas City. 2B is a weak position in Oakland history, along with catcher, and unless one insists on two at each position I don’t see anyone but Ellis worthy of even the Top 25.

            • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 4,2017 1:42 pm || Up

    A yes, the famous Chief Law Enforcement Officer Clause in Article II of the Constitution

            I think the Laney Board was feeling a lot of pressure from students and faculty. Without getting political pressure from City and State electeds to counter it.

            Supposedly Laney has a bad deficit problem too. They may come to regret not cashing in in this asset. By then though the current board members will be gone.

            • dmoas Dec 6,2017 12:55 pm || Up

              As far as property goes, I think they won’t have trouble selling and helping fill that deficit. And whoever they sell to at that point will likely build something more suitable for their student/faculty purposes than a ballpark. Obviously they could have tried to push hard for more money, but I also think the the A’s wouldn’t likely back the truck up for that property so the real financial losses would be somewhat minimal.

              • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Dec 6,2017 10:12 pm || Up

                The more conditions you put on the land the less you get when you sell it. Peralta would certainly get more by selling to the A’s than to anyone else, plus whatever community benefits they could have extracted. In purely financial terms this was a terrible decision.

              I think so. Although the China Basin area was pretty run down before the Gnats moved in, it had one major advantage over the Coliseum site – much much closer to the city center. That alone made the area around their ballpark very attractive to developers. I don’t see the same thing happening with Coliseum.

                  I would say it’s the only remaining possibility of the A’s staying in Oakland, but since Cisco Field in Fremont the A’s have been focused on the ballpark only without getting involved in the residential/retail/office aspect.

                • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Dec 6,2017 3:48 pm || Up

                  Oakland needs housing. What better place to barf out a bunch of lego-looking condo buildings than right next to an existing BART station that will soon get you to SF, SJ or Downtown Oakland in 30 minutes? Hell, there’s even an Amtrak station. I think it could work if everyone commits to it.

          • Soaker Soaker Dec 6,2017 2:31 pm || Up

            I think that’s the significant difference between the Coliseum and the Qualcomm Stadium site in San Diego, which is otherwise similar in things like freeway and mass transit access. Two parties are interested down there; one is called “Soccer City” or some such that would bring in a MLS franchise plus housing and commercial, and the other is SDSU which would do an appropriate-sized football stadium (~30-35K) and a mix of student housing (a couple trolley line stops from campus) and market-rate housing, plus some commercial.

            Meanwhile, if I were Montreal and serious about baseball, this is a great time to jump in and present a proposal that can be done with a minimum of screwing around. They have a temporary stadium ready right now so if they can commit by late 2018 the A’s could be there in 2019. Don’t let the Giants abscond with the Alameda/Contra Costa T-rights, and tell the East Bay that if it wants baseball again, the line for expansion franchises #31 and #32 forms over there, or alternately as the 1990s stadiums start to age there might be some existing franchises shopping around, with Cleveland topping that list.

            Maybe there are ways you could get creative with the site, including by better connecting it to the area near the BART station and San Leandro Bay, such that it would spur some actual redevelopment of the nearby warehouse/industrial areas but it would take a lot of money, vision, and time.

          In the eyes of the potential financiers the Peralta land was maybe twice as valuable as an investment vehicle. That’s why the A’s are so reluctant to consider Coliseum 2.0, which might not even pencil out at break even. “Privately financed” doesn’t mean Fisher’s paying for it himself.

      seriously. now that the D has a seat less-secure and the R is leveraging the step-down as phony high-ground seeking, franken’s move seems not great in the long run. i mean, i’m not at all defending him. but in yesterday’s behind the news with doug henwood, a conversation between jane mcalevey and liza featherstone, so no slouches in feminism, seemed to agree that a better course woulda been, “i’ll gladly step down… when the president resigns for his accusations.”

      i hadn’t heard that one.

        There’s a certain hardball logic to that, but it never would have flown with the Democratic coalition. For good or bad, we are currently the team that holds itself to a higher standard.

        (I also should probably be able to get over this, but the mere mention of Doug Henwood makes me angry. I can’t help but blame guys like him for making President Trump possible. Petty, I know.)

      Them and everybody else. The A’s had just days before agreed to Peralta’s demand of $5 million in predevelopment costs, which seems a bit shakedown-y, but anyway the A’s said OK, then Peralta still suddenly pulls the rug out? I don’t think Kaval+Co remotely contemplated having to respond to this right now.

      I was there during the putrid Dick Kuchen years. Dick went 37-89 in conference, but 43-23 out of conference because you schedule a bunch of cupcakes in November and December. For a power conference team to be at RPI 311 at this point is quite an achievement. That’s the territory of the bad teams in the one-and-done conferences.

If they somehow manage to keep losing while both Trout and Ohtani put up star performances, that will make it sweeter still.

      Baker Bowl was one of my favorites playing old games. The 9 – 3 put outs from the 280 foot right field wall/300 right center wall with a 60 foot wall. It makes me want the A’s to replicate the dimensions.

    For a slow Saturday sports night you could do worse than the Lomachenko – Rigondeaux fight on ESPN, starting around 8. Lomachenko’s high on most pound-for-pound lists, Rigondeaux is a strong fighter who’s been relentlessly screwed the way boxing does, so nothing to lose. Good looking undercard too.

          Injury toll didn’t seem high. Lots of slips and falls of course, but OTOH no one could get up to full speed, and landings were soft. Nate Peterman got a concussion diving headfirst, and Kelvin Benjamin aggravated a knee injury that had previously kept him out of a couple of games. I think one of the Colts linemen limped off at some point (I also thought they said the Colts have 31 players on IR this year but I see 14 listed for them)

          There are only two ways this can go for the Bills though:
          1) They beat Miami twice, lose to NE, and at 9-7 miss the second wildcard spot on a tiebreaker.
          2) They bedshit one of the games against Miami, in a situation where 9-7 would have gotten them in.
