November post season Grill 287

season is over, Yay for Josh. Fuck you tyler and Luke. But josh, just…no.

First order of business, Justin upton signs extension with the California Angels.

5 years. Keeps trout in center for 18, 19, and 20 so that is a piece of good news.

I wanted to put more stiff in but am tired

    Anibal Godoy re-signed, which is huge. He’s the rock in the defensive midfield, I’m actually looking forward to seeing him play with Panama in the WC.

    Andres Imperiale is close to being re-signed, which is pretty good because he provides depth at CB, though he’s probably not starting caliber.

    Cordell Cato is apparently gone, which is no real loss. He basically deserted the team and the T&T National Team and didn’t really even play at all the 2nd half of the season. More importantly, for me, is to get rid of Simon Dawkins, who also disappeared but took up a DP slot. The rumor is he’s still got a year left on his contract, but they need to agree on a mutual termination. The guy didn’t even make the gameday 18.

    My other wish is that they let Darwin Ceren go. IMO, Florian Jungwirth is a better option at CDM anyway, which is his preferred spot, and Harold Cummings being healthy will give us the big CB in the middle to let Flo move up to mid. Along with that, I think Fatai Alashe needs to be permanently converted to CB as well. Leitch seems to prefer 3 at the back, whether 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, so essentially we’re gonna need 3 CBs.

    Lima being healthy takes care of the RWB spot, but LWB is going to be the key aquisition this offseason. Shea Salinas is a decent MLS player, but we just have to do better than that.

    Fixing the defense has to be the priority. There’s enough attacking firepower in Wondo, Vako, Hoesen, Urena, and Hyka, along with Tommy and Yueill as midfield creators. The back line was just awful and leaked goals like crazy, which should be Fioranelli’s focus.

    Oh… you guys meant BASEBALL postseason?

    • andeux Nov 3,2017 10:55 am || Up

      Sounds about right.

      What a shitshow:
      – League-leading +14 in turnovers on the year before last night. -3 last night (all fumbles trying to get extra yardage at the end of plays). That’s usually enough to lose to anyone right there.
      – 11 penalties for 99 yards, including 4 personal fouls.
      – Offensive line got whipped. 63 rushing yards (more than half by the QB) and 7 sacks. After 166 rushing yards, 0 sacks against Oakland on Sunday.
      – Defensive line got whipped. 194 rushing yards allowed. Only allowed 54 against Oakland on Sunday.

      On to the bargaining stage:
      5-3 now, 4 games left against good teams (NO, KC, NE x2) and 4 against bad teams (Indy, LAC, Miami x2). 9-7 could make the playoffs in the AFC, but they can’t afford another performance like that in one of the winnable games. Might well be too much to ask.

    it won’t stop bugging me that i can’t tell if the polybius conspiracy podcast has an asshole for a main character and/or is a work of undisclosed fiction.

    the butterfly effect’s 1st episode is all sorts of promising though. how some dude turned the youtube of illegal porn uploads into the monolithic pornpire we live with today. salient point for the day: a female porn star can’t open a bank account because, you know, ill repute, but this guy gets teens of millions of bucks from an investor to buy out the porn competition he undermined.

    guys we fucked is ending?? i think that’s what they’re saying? i feel like it’s been a long time since that cry we all had over getting dumped at a fucking panera, and they’ve sure come a long way. i’ll just fave the (not unrelated to ¶ above) stoya epp and check in whenever i need to. and maybe in time i’ll hear which is who? (i mixed up the hostesses’ voices early on and never did straighten it out.)

    the guys of 80s all over are fair in general, but they sure are lenient with crappy horror/fantasy movies and don’t extend the same courtesy to dialog-driven stuff that’s not weighty. (i’m saying they all laughed > dragonslayer, all day every day… but i’m not signing up on twitter just to tell them that.) still, nice to relive a chronological catalog of releases over the decade.

    crooked media has a new title. though lovett and cox won’t be replaced as gold and silver medalists on the podium of my heart.

    accused has a new season that i’ve been saving for a nice gray saturday (like tomorrow).

    jim clemente still gets mad on anything he’s on.

    brian mcmullen reading his full list of not-yet-dot-coms on the organist is still a more entertaining way to go to sleep than tracks to relax with that smug-sounding hypnotist.

    and that’s your podcast catchup for the month.

      Slate just started a podcast about what it was like to live through Watergate called “Slow Burn.” It has potential.

      • AV Dec 6,2017 10:02 am || Up

        really like how slow burn weaves in narrative, interview and primary source audio.

        also love the movie filk at the beginning of every intercepted. had to look up today’s because i’ve never seen the room. i guess the burn is on sarah’s hair style? scahill… gad he’s odd. pre-teen temperament with peak journalist chops. or something.

        the new 30 for 30 is about madden the game, but has some nice uncredited bill king audio at the beginning. didn’t finish the epp though, what with its going on and on and on about football and video games.

        i’m really missing embedded and not sure why it’s lagging with new installments. the one on trump soho is worth a listen.

        my new adds are:
        family ghosts — tracking down the odd myth told down, or hushed, through generations.

        heavywheight — tracking down a crossroads moment in the past of someone’s life.

        what really happened — with the two above, kind of a trilogy of past-moments retroxploration. this one about events we all lived through via media, especially if conspiracy theories sprouted out of them.

        heaven’s gate (or did i already mention heaven’s gate?) — the guy from snap judgment goes deep into the cult, as a former (different) cult member himself.

        intelligence matters — kinda like pod save the world but with michael morell of the CIA interviewing other intelligence peeps.

        was this always weird? — looking at movies from pre-2000 through the eyes of 4 semi-woke millennial dudes who aren’t super sharp on history. like, they like rock n roll highschool, even if all the songs sound the same, are down with riff rydell for being so cool, but would probably date kate who’s so fine even with the big glasses on, and don’t get how eating goldfish is funny, till one of them says i think it was a fad? like in the 70s? (full disclosure, i’ve eaten a goldfish myself, but not during the 1939 gulping fad.)

        majority 54 is going ok. waiting for a breakout epp.

        the host of the upcoming girls just wanna have pod is really funny and sharp in the pod save live shows, so i can’t wait for that. (hate it that i missed the oakland show. waited too long and the only available tickets were just a little too much.)

        movie crush — one guy from stuff you should know talking to semi-celebs about their favorite movie. iono. hit or miss.

        politico’s off message — more politico.

        accused 2nd season — can’t keep the details of the crime in my head all the time, but the one guy is like listening to omar from the wire, if omar was straight and pimp-curious.

        amy on the canon dropped my name! or initials, as the case may be. she was riffing on how calling people chicken (back to the future) is an odd big deal, and mentioned going to a boca game at la bonbonera and how she was warned that it could be fatal to call someone a chicken there. she got the reason a little off. it’s ok, because i went on their forum and straightened it out. so she thanked me. now i’m pod famous.

    One item on Oakland’s wish list this winter is a right-handed-hitting corner outfielder with several years of team control remaining, sources told The Chronicle on Wednesday. And with Miami’s new ownership looking to shed payroll, the A’s have interest in Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna.

    Sounds like Beane may already be looking to cash in his prospects to contend.

    (They also had a conversation with Ichiro’s agent.)

              Maybe the play is to tell Republicans to hold their noses and vote for him and have McConnell and co. promise to expel him and do this all over again next year.

                And admit they made a mistake? No, they’ll hold their nose and continue to hold their nose. Maybe when he’s re-upped they’ll run a heavy primary against him and/or quietly hope he dies/doesn’t re-run, but they have no qualms about checking that R box and nor do their followers. The unfortunate illegality of him being appointed back to his old seat without an election notwithstanding. They’d also have to figure out how to confirm a new AG.

              • Glorious Mundy Nov 15,2017 7:27 pm || Up

                The new play…

                Mitch McConnell and his top advisers are discussing the legal feasibility of asking appointed Sen. Luther Strange to resign from his seat in order to trigger a new special election.

                …sounds blatantly unconstitutional.

                The seventeenth amendment says you have to hold special elections to fill senate seats when a vacancy occurs, and then it says the governor can appoint someone to serve temporarily to hold the seat pending the special election. In other words, the vacancy that triggered the special election was Sessions resigning. Strange doesn’t have anything to do with that election, and his resignation can’t affect it.

          It would have to be the state Republican party organization, I assume. But who knows what the mechanism for that would be. I’m not sure there is a case of a party replacing a nominee against his will after he won the primary.

          If he refuses to drop out (and this is Roy Moore, of course he will refuse), their only choice is to run a write-in campaign with…..someone who would probably finish third behind Jones and Moore.

    “Stupid Watergate” is becoming a better and better name for this.

    “Strongly suggest your dad tweets this link if he mentions us,” WikiLeaks went on, pointing Trump Jr. to the link wlsearch.tk, which it said would help Trump’s followers dig through the trove of stolen documents and find stories. “There’s many great stories the press are missing and we’re sure some of your follows [sic] will find it,” WikiLeaks went on. “Btw we just released Podesta Emails Part 4.”

    Trump Jr. did not respond to this message. But just 15 minutes after it was sent, as The Wall Street Journal’s Byron Tau pointed out, Donald Trump himself tweeted, “Very little pick-up by the dishonest media of incredible information provided by WikiLeaks. So dishonest! Rigged system!”

    Today is my 25th anniversary!

    Our celebration so far has included a metal show Sunday night at the X Bar in Cupertino. This was VelociTurkeySaurus Rex Tour, headlined by Psychostick. Despite being only a mile and a half from my house, I had no idea what the X Bar was, until a quick check revealed that it’s the bar at a bowling alley where I used be a league bowler. The real stunner was that she actually wanted to go with me (normally, a ‘stick show is a stag event for me). Psychostick was, of course, awesome. Josh, the guitarist, spent a fair amount of time talking to us. Of the bands on the undercard, the one I’d really like to see again was Raven Black – here’s a sample.

    ” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>

    Also, I shot some video of the ‘stick. It’s kind of hard to see the band because the stage was not lit up all that well, but the sound quality is pretty good.

      It makes me sad, not just that Cal has been getting its ass kicked every year recently, but that weird shit like that can’t happen because the games haven’t been close. In 15-year increments:

      2002-2016: 4 of the 15 games have been decided by <10 points. Cal won 7 of the first 8, during the good part of the Tedford era, but Stanford has won the last 7, by an average margin of 22 points, including the 63-13 abomination in Sonny Dykes' first year.

      1987-2001: 9 of the 15 decided by <10 points, including 1 tie and 1 OT game.

      1972-1986: 10 of the 15 decided by <10 points. This includes the time when I was a student and neither team was ever much good except, briefly, Joe Roth/Chuck Muncie in the 70s, and it seemed like the underdog won almost every year.

          My guess is that Healy didn’t have much value and they wanted to take the deal before Seattle found another first baseman.

          Pagan may be useful. A 7 to 1 K/BB in his first year in the bigs is not bad.

      Alexander Campos was mlb.com’s #15 Seattle prospect:

      Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 35 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45
      The Mariners made Campos one of their top international signings early in the 2016-17 period, inking the teenage shortstop out of Venezuela for $575,000 on July 4. He emerged as one of the organization’s more promising middle-infield prospects in his first professional season, showing an advanced defensive skill set at shortstop as well a promising bat while playing in the Dominican Summer League.

      Evaluators believe Campos has the potential to stick at shortstop. He’s an athletic and instinctual defender with good actions and the necessary arm strength for the position. Campos’ above-average speed translates on both sides of the ball, though he has gains to make as a baserunner. At the plate, the right-handed hitter is short to the ball and has good feel for the barrel, resulting in lots of line drives and some gap power, and he already has shown on-base skills with an advanced approach.

      Campos has started to grow into his athletic frame since signing and should continue to tack on good strength. His defense-speed combination at an up-the-middle position gives him a possible floor as a big league reserve, though further progress at the plate could very well thrust him into the conversation as an everyday player.

        Baseball America:

        Campos is speedy shortstop who projects to be an above-average defender with a plus arm. Offensively he could be an average hitter but with very modest, well below-average power. He is very advanced for his age and may move quicker than most teenage shortstops when he comes to the United States in 2018. Campos projects as a potential solid-average everyday shortstop down the road, but he’ll need time and there’s a lot of development ahead.

    So, the A’s trade the one guy whose name I remember for two guys whose names I’ll never remember. It must be time for Billy Beane’s hot stove league. Oh well at least I have KU football…we whooped Southeast Missouri State’s ass this season!

    But seriously, folks...
    • Soaker Nov 27,2017 12:19 pm || Up

      KU, sticking with the process apparently, is bringing back its coach for a fourth season. He is 3-33 overall, 1-26 in conference (ha ha Texas), and of his 0-9 conference record this season 5 of the losses were by 38 points or more. No up-and-coming young coach would want that dead-end job, so they are stuck with either some journeyman assistant type, which is what they have, or else a burnt out retread like Charlie Weis.

      I found this lovely nugget summing up their 2017 season:

      In conference play, Kansas finished worst in scoring offense (14.3 points), scoring defense (46.4 points allowed), total offense (287.8 yards), total defense (480.8 yards allowed), rushing offense (100.3 yards), pass efficiency (98.1, more than 100 points behind Oklahoma’s first-place 199.1), pass efficiency defense (172.7), first downs (13.9 a game), third-down conversions (26.3 percent), time of possession (27:35 on average), turnover margin (minus-14) and red zone defense (91.3 opponent scoring percentage).

      Given that just about everybody except Cal goes to a bowl game nowadays, I would enjoy watching KU play the Oregon State Beavers, also 0-9 in conference, in the ChevronTexaco Prudhoe Bay Bowl.

        KU, Cal, UNC and Harvard can be in the FK Suck Bowl playoffs. Though the Crimson at 5-5 are probably too good to qualify.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • Soaker Nov 27,2017 8:26 pm || Up

          If Cal is in the Final Four of FK Suck, UCLA has to be there too. The Bruins went 6-0 at home and 0-6 on the road and beat Cal in Pasadena by only 3 points. They gave up the most yards per game of any Power 5 team (more than KU!) and the fourth most points per game in the Power 5 (KU, Oregon State, Maryland). This is why California has a new highest-paid public employee.

          On the other end of it, Iowa State enjoyed its unthinkable #1 spot on the FK Power Index for a while, but stumbled in November while Furd and Fresno State finished strong to push the Cyclones into third place. But, an Iowa State-Fresno State game would be better than most of the bowl games that will actually be played.
