Be prepared to see “he who shall not be named” fist pumping around the bases played all the time.
Unlike some of you, I haven’t decided on a rooting interest. On the one hand, 1988, but LA winning would sure piss off a lot of Giants fans. Plus, CA. On the other hand, I usually go for the American League team. But Verlander, ugh. Plus I lived in Houston, and IDGAF about Houston Strong, it’s a shitty city. In Texas.
I’m sure something will happen during the course of events that will tip the scales.
ahem
I suck at phone. Image meant to be the full 2014 cover with prediction:
That soccer teaser had me reeeeeeeeally confused about whether this was a new cover.
Many of houston’s ongoing problems stem from zero bulding codes. fuck “strong” anything.
but reddick corea and altuve are fun. McCann and Verlander seem like dicks.
Dodgers have a lot of fun players plus farhan. But I can’t get over some of my dodger fan freinds and $100M in dead payroll.
go houston
* zoning codes?
sure
But the Dodgers winning creates great sadness among Giants fans. And I’m pro-sadness.

“The path that I would have to travel to get the Republican nomination is a path I’m not willing to take, and that I can’t in good conscience take.”
Surely the corollary for him should be running as an independent?
At the very least leave the fucking party.
He shouldn’t necessarily leave the party. But he should fight for it, even if he is afraid of losing. Quitting the race only emboldens the nuts he decries.
not if he’s running for prez.
book it.
Self-awareness still on zero.
wait a minute.
super dave is albert brook’s brother??
As you enjoy the work of Joe Buck during this, his 19th World Series (most ever by a play-by-play announcer), please consider supporting him for the first post-Bill Frick Award.
Although from that list I’m making Morgan the favorite.
of those, Drysdale is the one that know and doesn’t offend me. (morgan is only moderately offensive).
You’d have to put Costas as the fave, thanks to Ken Burns (plus long tenure of good quality). Dean and Drysdale’s work were both well regarded, and in Dean’s case at least considered iconic.
I have no problems with Costas or Michaels.
Dean introduced “slud” into the vocabulary. That’s worth something.
At least if he wins, Fox will have to pay him more. And that means less money for Fox.
Larry King is still alive? Wow.
That YouTube logo arrow ad directly in the middle of the screen is irritating AF.
Google obviously spent a shitload of money on this. If they drown out that Applebee’s ad with the song and the oily-looking food it’s an improvement though.
that was so exciting! did you guys see that bunt?
SPOILERS!!!#!!
[throws away VHS of major league]
Um, wut?
It’s such a pleasure to see a postseason game where the pitchers get the ball and throw it, and throw lots of strikes. There have been way too many games where 90 minutes in, we’re staggering through the bottom of the 3rd.
2:30, even with the longer commercial breaks.
sunday bloody sunday bumper music, fox?
Why on earth would you take out Kershaw at this point?
It worked out OK, but Kershaw’s pitch count wasn’t an issue, unless he said the heat was bothering him. I would have let the best pitcher in baseball throw one more inning in a game he was dominating rather than take a chance of my 8th inning guy not having it tonight.
they need him to go at east 6 in game 5. I think its ok. their bulpen has been worthy this year
Game 5?
hill starts the clincher
Fox needs a Game 5 if they’re going to have the GR8ST WKEND EVER
Watching this network is such an assault on the senses.
I’ve been saying this for years, Fox was way ahead of other media platforms in this all-encompassing brand-as-message approach, right down to the omnipresent red white and blue. I now attribute this all to the Russians.
Shutout, Lehner!
(Oh, what game were you all watching?)
I’m not ok with screwing over people. If I was, though, this is the kind of scammer I’d be. Big plans, community benefits, nice guy, good listener, etc. Guy even threw out a first pitch an a A’s game.
Uber, but for buying iconic Oakland buildings and promising to do something with them … oh, wait.

So GHWB is a nonagenarian ass-grabber.
As an active politician I recall him as chaste, almost asexual, probably the least personally interesting Prez in my lifetime.
he had a contemporaneously reported affair as president that all denied
I’d forgotten that. Still somehow he seemed so much less a creature of desires and flaws than other Prez’s, even Carter.
Well, in fairness, some of that might be the contrast with his successor.
He called his wife “mother” before it was trendy.
it was as trendy as a sweater set!
Dead sexy.
On that note.

Just say no…to your physician!
Oh Josh
He needs a hug.
My man is making a lot of outs.
OK
A three-run game-winning homer would become the Greatest Walk-Off in Dodger World Series history. Or at least it would dilute the previous one.
Gregerson warming up.
Just the idea of him pitching was enough.
Thought Reddick might get him there.
McCarthy!
Damn it Brandon, you aren’t the former A who was supposed to blow this.
I blame Geren.
I didn’t see earlier parts of the game, but what was Roberts (or Geren) doing:
1) IBB to Reddick with no one on, two out in the 4th? OK, pitcher due up next, but Reddick is career .229/.289/.365 vs. LHP.
2) Then Hill out after 4 IP, 60 pitches? That’s what set up trying to get 3 innings out of Morrow/Jansen, after using them each for an inning yesterday.
3) logic being 5 righties?
I only listened to the first 6. checked phone periodically. Even with that limited contact I was getting nervous
I really want reddick to walk off all three games in houston
I had to stop watching after 7th inning to go to my softball game. I didn’t miss anything did I?
Reddick hit into at least one more double play.
Magary on Magary
That’s all well and good, but Magary’s views on kraut are still problematic.
That list needs some mention of the only pickled thing I actually like: cornichons.
Also, is kraut technically “pickled”? It seems like a very different thing to me.
Burneki gets it.
https://adequateman.deadspin.com/pickle-some-stuff-1819911663
Yeah, it’s difficult when someone you like is so horribly wrong about something. Tough to retain respect for someone who hates kraut, or likes VWs, or votes for Jill Stein.
Good on Drew. Self-reflection is hard, and necessary.
That was a very good read, thanks. I especially liked this bit:

Yep, defense looked ugly again. My friend there says try 13th St. 1-2 blocks north of Pearl, a few good places including the Corner Bar. I see Papadosio is at the Boulder Theater tonight, that could be fun.
Thanks, but I’m already down in Pueblo, getting ready to head into the mountains in the AM for some soaks. I’ll spend more time in Boulder when the A’s are in Denver at the end of July, when it’s not Homecoming Weekend.
As Darvish labors in the 2nd the LA bullpen is in for another long night.
This will be really unpopular here, but honestly, I don’t see what this nothingburger is all about.
Its hard for me to see any Trump ties to Russia–I mean, except for the Flynn thing and the Manafort thing and the Tillerson thing and the Sessions thing and the Kushner thing and the Wray thing and the Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius “Russian Law Firm of the Year” thing and the Carter Page thing and the Roger Stone thing and the 198 Million voter records thing and the Felix Sater thing and the Boris Ephsteyn thing and the Rosneft thing and the Gazprom thing and the Sergey Gorkov banker thing and the Azerbajain thing and the “I love Putin” thing and the Donald Trump, Jr. thing and the Lavrov thing and the Sergey Kislyak thing and the Oval Office thing and the Gingrich/Kislyak phone calls thing and the Russian Business Interests thing and the Emoluments Clause thing and the Alex Schnaider thing and the hack of the DNC thing and the Guccifer 2.0 thing and the Mike Pence “I don’t know anything” thing and the Russians mysteriously dying thing and Trump’s public request to Russia to hack Hillary’s email thing and the Trump house sale for $100 million at the bottom of the housing bust to the Russian fertilizer king thing and the Russian fertilizer king’s plane showing up in Concord, NC during Trump rally campaign thing and the Nunes sudden flight to the White House in the night thing and the Nunes personal investments in the Russian winery thing and the Cyprus bank thing and Trump not releasing his tax returns thing and the Republican Party’s rejection of an amendment to require Trump to show his taxes thing and the election hacking thing and the GOP platform change to the Ukraine thing and the Steele Dossier thing and the Sally Yates can’t testify thing and the intelligence community’s investigative reports thing and the Trump reassurance that the Russian connection is all “fake news” thing and the Chaffetz not willing to start an investigation thing and the Chaffetz suddenly deciding to go back to private life in the middle of an investigation thing and the appointment of Pam Bondi who was bribed by Trump in the Trump University scandal appointed to head the investigation thing and the alfa-bank thing and the VEB thing and the The White House going into full-on cover-up mode, refusing to turn over the documents related to the hiring and subsequent firing of Flynn thing and the Chaffetz and White House blaming the poor vetting of Flynn on Obama thing and the Poland and British intelligence gave information regarding the hacking back in 2015 to Paul Ryan and he didn’t do anything thing and the Agent M16 following the money thing and the Trump team KNEW about Flynn’s involvement but hired him anyway thing and the let’s fire Comey thing and the Mueller let’s fire him too thing and the Election night Russian trademark gifts thing and the Russian diplomatic compound electronic equipment destruction thing and the let’s give back the diplomatic compounds back to the Russians thing and the let’s back away from Cuba thing and the donny Jr met with Russians thing and now Trump’s secret second meeting with his boss Putin.
Thanks, and go As.
He did tell us he was gonna renegotiate a lot of deals.
First charges filed by Mueller, arrests expected Monday.
Buckle in.
Thanks, and go As.
Just Manafort tomorrow do you think? He doesn’t strike me as a guy willing to silently take the rap. If it’s Flynn also Trump should be terrified. If it’s Kushner he’s done.
They already have Kushner dead to rights with his paperwork bullshit. I’d imagine the problem with that is it’s easily pardoned without any real consequences. But it’s likely just Marafort.
I saw some speculation that it could be someone less central like Flynn Jr., presumably as part of a longer strategy to get people to flip on those closer to the top.
I agree that the security clearance stuff can be made to seem like not a big deal. Manafort, Flynn, and Page all seem like they are pretty clearly guilty of big time tax evasion and/or money laundering, which is a bigger deal, but a little harder to tie to the election stuff.
One strategy would be to indict a bunch of people at once, exerting pressure on each guy to flip for a good deal before his peers sell him out first.
You could totally get Don Jr. to spill everything by telling him that Kushner is in the next room selling him out.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the first one was such a minor figure for a minor thing that it be presented as a letdown by the MSM and as proof that the investigation is waste by T & Co. But I suspect the charges would be such that a pardon would be a dangerous proposition for Trump only because it would open them up to implicate others without pleading the 5th. It’s partly why I think a Flynn Jr is unlikely unless he has those sorts of connections through his father.
Hitting running diving dirty happy Reddick!
Stupid bunty angry Reddick.
peacock?
Dominant, just like his A’s tenure.
2 years of lowrie
We can all agree that racist images have no place in the world series.
Incidentally, have I ever shouwn you this cool image from the last world series?
A compelling case.
I fear another Astros HR soon.
This Astros bullpen needs the presence of a wily veteran like Santiago Casilla to steady itself.
Fear assuaged.
Holy shit, Iowa State may actually be good at football this year.
Two wins over Top 10 teams!
Oh, Bruce.
http://m.sfgate.com/athletics/article/A-s-catcher-Bruce-Maxwell-arrested-on-gun-charge-12315230.php
That’s really depressing.
I am not seeing a crime, even if you believe the driver’s story.
Driver comes to house, Maxwell confronts with gun, driver says food delivery, maxwell lowers gun.
Sure, I think its idiotic and should be a crime, but it isn’t a crime.
I am guessing racist and target at a police protester.
If the driver’s story is as you tell it, I agree. If he or she says he pulled the gun during an argument, or something like that, then it sounds like it could be assualt. Not enough information to tell either way.
All I sasw was an AP report
really nothing to say yet
“Anti-police statements”
Here are the police reports.
Pretty much the first part of what Ed said.
Doesn’t sound like the delivery person knew who he was though.
It sounds fucking terrifying. Delivery driver shows up for a routine delivery to gun in her face, immediately calls 911 and 10 cops respond. That may not be a crime but holy shit that is not acceptable, fuck that guy.
absolutely
On the whole I’d rather not be in Buffalo.
Me neither.
Wow, 5-2, I can’t remember when that happened last time. Pretty sure they will find the way to FK it up, still
2011. Then lost their next 7.
Before that, 1996.
Sagh.
Slippery balls.
The Great Barrier Reef is otherworldly, breathtaking, and heartbreaking.
In case you aren’t already rooting against them, the Astros have trotted out GHWB and GWB.
President Copafeel and his idiot son.
You know what fuck the Astros.
Yup.
Is the umpire calling the location of balls a new feature?
He’s miked, it may be that he always narrates for batter and catcher that way.
Umps are different, but many do tend to tell where it missed. The miked part of it is certainly interesting and special for the game.
I was watching some of the Rugby League World Cup in Sydney last night, and they had a great replay system, with the video umpire live broadcasting their deliberations – explaining what they were looking for, and calling for particular video angles and sequences.
Gah – the persistent indenting after a reply is annoying!
I always thought rugby league (with the possible exception of tennis) had the best replay system. Always less than 30 seconds, the ref on the field can defer if he’s not sure. It’s great.
The defer-if-not-sure thing is the best part.
Although it does make more sense when it’s one guy chasing some of the fastest people on earth.
That’s some karma for Gurriel.
Team-worst WPA last night.
Better tonight. Man he crushed that pitch.
Warming up the Verlander strike zone.
Damn, this World Series is delivering.
So the ball is slicker than usual? Doesn’t seem like that could be accidental, or unresolvable if it were just an outlier batch.
That would certainly contribute to the unusual frequency of the walk-walk-homer sequence … maybe MLB/Fox felt that would make better TV than pitchers’ duels.
From the Verducci article we know they made special new batches for the postseason. My theory is a slightly different cowhide batch which doesn’t accept the pregame mud rub as well.
They must get through thousands of batches of cowhide, so for it to feel so different to the pitchers it has to be a pretty significant outlier.
Tough ball 4 to be struck out on (though it’s been consistent).
What the FK? Bunting with a runner in scoring position in an AL park?
When even Joe Buck criticizes your stupid NL bunt you know it was outrageous.
I was expecting the suicide squeeze from Forsyth.
I hate games like this.
4+ hours long, plus dredged up memories of similar A’s playoff games, usually not ending well.
I dunno, a seesaw slugfest is pretty rollicking good fun when it’s not my hopes being dashed.
And right on cue…
Also, hindsight is 20/20, etc., but it sure seems like Roberts is on tilt. Not just that he used Morrow there, but it also reinforces how stupid the sac bunt was in a game like this.
It looks like Roberts should have kept Morrow unavailable today. Straight fastballs say hit me please.
I blame Geren.
Always a sound policy.
I’m calling bullshit on this Budweiser Prohibition Repeal Beer nonsense.
If they’re going to do in game ads like that they really need to cut down the between inning time. It’s a net good trade-off for everyone.
Dunno if it’s related but they’ve been “keeping it right here” through occasional mid-innings breaks.
They need to do more of that while shrinking that time. They don’t actually need even half that time to get ready anyway. It’ll also keep eyes on it more since you wouldn’t walk away for that short a time span.
Didn’t Run on Reddick
Fear the schlong.
Apparently “No” vs. “Go” confusion.
Didn’t we see that in another big game a couple of years ago.
To avoid further confusion, I propose changing “go” to “RUN DUMMY!”
Or Yes, Yes, Yes, Oh god yes!
Except…third base coach was yelling Go and the runner thought he was saying No. Aren’t they supposed to have terms they can use that won’t be confused? Like Stop?
The Pixies in a Citibank ad. What a dystopia we live in.
I always expected it from the Clash but yeah, that’s sad.
I mean, played as far as high school.
We NEVER said GO or NO, alway RUN or STAY.
since we actually had to tag up
Definitely seems like a failing there.
Or a lame-ass excuse attempt after a fuck-up by the runner.
“No, I thought you said ‘I’m alright, Spider.'”
And now that run matters. Of course.
Uno mas, por favor…
Wild pitch anyone?
Stretching that single to a double worked out well.
Wow.
Gregerson the only Astros pitcher with positive WPA.
Can’t stop watching this
On one hand the aggro thieving throwing dude is way out of line. OTOH the ostensible Astros fans with the ball are celebrating a Dodger HR. Really it’s hilarious because they all suck.
Now is the time when Reddick gets the big hit, right?
nnnnnnope
ASVD
Reddick in left?!
I love the mic’ed up ump. Very cool.
Roger Angell in his prime would have had a field day with this series.
That was epic.
cool thing is I get to root for a rich hill 132 pitch perfect game with no guilt

the defendant’s ambiguous and equivocal reference to a “lawyer dog” does not constitute an invocation of counsel
Didn’t seem too ambiguous to me. Remove “dog” from his comment and it’s basically “get me a lawyer”
Indeed
Once again, the importance of commas comes to the fore.
this kinda pisses me off. a bunch of white men with moderate to good educatons have no idea of how people in the world talk.
that was clear and unequivocal to me
There are better disingenuous linguistic hooks to hang an opinion that he didn’t unequivocally ask: “If y’all think I did it…then why don’t you just give me a lawyer.”
Taking those as making the ask conditional, or not an ask at all, also ignores how people really talk, but in a less embarrassing way.
i thought it was clear that was what they were trying to lean on. the if/then.
except the next sentence they write equivocates that.
I imagine the other seven judges (it was an 8-1 decision) did lean on that. This guy just wrote an incredibly dumb concurring opinion.
Uhhhhhhhhhh
Good people on both sides. Both sides.
3/5 much?
it’s like they forgot the original meaning of the euphemisms.
what’s he gonna say next… the lack of ability to reach a final solution caused WW2?
also, “inability.” john, the word is “inability.”
Missouri much?
1850 much?
Some Stephen Douglas-ass shit, I tell you.
Like Trump said, Stephen Douglas is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more.
Jimmy G.
Thanks, and go As.
It seems like a great move for SF, but since it’s a deal with New England I assume Garrapolo is near death or under indictment or has a nasty pruno habit.
The Patsies would figure out how to FK you in a trade even if you were only sending them a used bag of practice balls.
A (very high) 2nd for him is still a good get — the reality is there was zero chance that NE could have kept both Brady and Garoppolo next year, and the reality is that the Pats are not cutting Brady no matter what.
Thanks, and go As.
Why waste the pick on a dead year and just sign him in the off season.
You get 8 games to figure out if you really like him in your system as opposed to having to sign him to a longerish/biggerish contract. If he Matt Flynns you can still draft someone else.
1) No bidding war
2) The pick was basically free from trading down last draft, they still have a 2nd rounder.
Thanks, and go As.
Isn’t there some CBA-related reason that second round picks are extremely valuable in the NFL?
Not really. First rounders all have a 5th year option, so sometimes it’s beneficial to move up from the early 2nd to the late 1st.
Thanks, and go As.
Do we think he’s actually that good outside of a magically-amazing team, though? I don’t have an opinion, just a concern.
The rumor is Kraft overruled Darth Bill as far as keeping Brady a Patriot for his entire career rather than letting him go this offseason and keeping Jimmy G.
That said, I have no idea how he’ll be, but hopefully Shanahan likes what he sees.
Thanks, and go As.
Halloween in Ely! What a scene of bawdy debauchery that must have been a century ago, or when the FSU caravan happened to come through town. I’m betting they roll up the sidewalks at sunset now, and in any case I’ll be watching a 5-hour Game 6 rather than joining the half-dozen residents who might be partying.
“It was dusk on Halloween in Ely Nevada, a nothing desert burg on Highway 50 where they rolled up the sidewalks at sunset. ‘Dull town,’ I thought. ‘Nothing can possibly happen here.'”
“Suddenly a woman’s blood-curdling scream broke the silence. A gunshot. Then another. Then…the silence returned. I grabbed my beer off the nightstand and turned my attention back to Rich Hill on the screen in front of me.”
After checking into the motel at one end of the old downtown, I walked to the other end of town at the mouth of the canyon. It’s as sadly derelict a place as you’ll find anywhere in America. As I pulled into town, JRAD’s version of “Shakedown Street” was playing on the satellite radio, and I gotta say, no matter how much poking around I do, I can’t believe I would find any heart in this town.
I stepped outside between innings and looked up and down Aultman Street. There is one bar and grill, Racks (named for the antlers mounted on the walls rather than the servers’ endowments), with a few cars parked in front, and a few more parked in front of the old Hotel Nevada, perhaps because the coffee shop there has been rebranded as a Denny’s, but those are the only signs of life.
Should be a strip club/pool hall/bbq joint.
/casino
I noticed that on my walk and suspected some of your Ely stories may be set there.
Honestly my Ely tales are all of the just-passin-thru variety. Though I did play a little blackjack and it struck me as the kinda joint where the locals would take a big score personally.
You’d think Roberts would have figured out by now that he doesn’t have four Andrew Millers in his bullpen.
Still, though, I like the unshaken confidence of going right back to Morrow in that high leverage spot.
Verlander’s compassionless dominance is depressingly familiar.
Awww … Justin looks sad.
They appear to actually let Geren make decisions in the dugout, yikes.
Setting up for a 4-inning Bumgarner out of Kershaw tomorrow?
Shocked that Pederson ball went out, off the bat it looked like a medium deep off-field fly ball.
7 pitch inning for Jansen. Maybe he will manage to get his 6 outs this time.
First England wins the Under-17 World Cup, and now Tottenham is destroying Real Madrid. I’m scared.
Thankfully the U17 WC has little to no bearing on what happens with the senior teams.
The U20 WC seems to be a much better indicator though.
Thanks, and go As.
Keith Hernandez made a San Francisco/gay joke on the pregame show.
sounds right.
Boring game
it was pretty exciting following on a phone in the county fair building at a mandatory pony league coaches meeting.
At least the Mariners and Rangers don’t have one.
Yeah, I’m at peace with my choice to root for Houston this postseason but now I’m mostly worried about having to play them 19 times a year.
The only good thing about that is after being their punching bag for most of the year the A’s won the last 5 against them with the kids playing.
They played until November. So now they’re not going to be nearly as rested next year? Most of our team stopped playing back in April and will have had a full year to rest?
