Dodgers and Astros looked better in DS’s than respective opponents. LA in 5 games, Houston in 6.
So Cubs/Yankees it is.
I’ve thought the Astros were the best team all season, and I’m sticking with them winning it all.
Dodgers/Astros would be a replay of the 1981 NLDS.
I was starting to adapt to the SoCal lifestyle and actually be a bit better about the Doyers.
Then somewhere I was something that showed a video of a HR-must have been some sort of exhibition game because it had a limping dude…
Fuck them-go Cubbies.
not bad
nm needs to rewrite the keystroke logger in HTML5.
As God is my witness I
thought turkeys could flyknew turkeys couldn’t fly and dropped them out of a plane anyway. What the actual fuck is wrong with people.
There will be football tonight in Berkeley.
thank you nm. just glad the a’s arent in ths game
why does MLB reset stats for the post season?
Probably because some agate editor for the New York Herald did it that way in the days of the Babe.
Yes this has always ticked me off too.
Some really nice defensive plays by the Astros.
Now Tanaka has a reddick.
good. Maybe that’ll scare away all the unlicensed hot dog vendors that aren’t participating in the twitter boycot today
Apparently Cal attendance sucked all year in 2002. Crowds of 27K, 25K, 32K, 29K, 47K, 29K, and 71K. Tedford’s first year, 7-5 finish.
I don’t know if EC pays attention, but this is the second week in a row some FKer’s perennially shitty football team pulled off a mega upset.
Now if Cal could…wait, I don’t smoke that stuff.
Excellent. Fuck Clemson.
does that include me?
You’re “perennially disappointing” or “perennially underachieving”, not “perennially shitty”.
It’s like Thanksgiving dinner all over again.
Putting the fun in dysfunctional.
sounds right
I just never warmed up to SU football as I did to basketball, but this is sweet nevertheless
Also, since it’s a weird collegey kinda night, HAH HAH HAH HAH SUCK IT NCAA!
It would suck to be aerobically active right now, but just being outside is not so bad, for me. Also those masks are useless against particulate pollution.
Went to the game, and yes it wasn’t that bad just sitting there. Was with a group that had slightly more WSU fans than Cal representing, and it started out with everyone being surprised and amused and ended up with some pretty shocked and disgruntled WSU fans. Pretty good fun all in all.
Cal is still quite capable of blowing this, but we were a 16.5 point underdog, so the run continues for FKers’ shitty teams. Now I’m thinking the Tar Heels might be a good bet as a 4 point home underdog. I’m not touching Kansas, though (+22.5 in Ames); the Jayhawks are just abominable.
The Heels are way worse than the Soakers Eds and doctorKs; by definition any team Carolina manages to beat wasn’t very good to begin with.
Kansas is the worst FKing load of crap in existence. In recent years we have gone back and forth between Iowa State and Cal for second place. This year, the Heels made a decision to grab the Pile of Manure with their opening-day home loss to Cal and they have run with it.
I watched some of the highlights from KU at ISU, and good grief that team is awful. The ‘Clones probably would’ve won if they had not even showed up for the game.
From a few weeks ago, says it all.
oy
Sorry to be late to the party, but Tedford 2.0 is starting out well. 1st place Fresno State at 4-2 with the 2 against top 10 teams on the road.
It clearly is smoke and mirrors but after the post Carr Deryuter teams (and given the shambles all my other sporting teams are in at the moment) I’ll take it.
Crystal Palace scored!
… and, less shockingly, conceded.
… and, even more shockingly, scored a second time.
29 goals in 8 games for City.
Kyles brother off the playoff roster
be nice to have not cubbison bat here
national leage baseball is so fun
I like it, so restful, helps me doze in my recliner like golf.
1. Best pitcher in the game removed early for a PH.
2. Schwarber’s defense.
3. Relief pitcher bats for himself, gets down a pretty much perfect bunt. Runner on second decides not to advance. (Followed by infield hit where runner again doesn’t advance.)
Followed by a having a new pitcher for the relief pitcher who batted for himself, in the top of the next inning
4. Jon Lester hitting.
OK, that one was my fault.
what the fuck? battiing for hill after 4?
Rich hill batting?
Baserunning/defense is the difference in the ALCS so far. Yankees thrown out at home yesterday and third today. Then Altuve scored the winning run on an aggressive play where he probably should have been out.
i don’t think he is sent if judge throws to the proper cut off.
i think you have to send bird, needed a perfect throw. gardner was just dumb
I dunno if y’all have seen this yet, but it’s got Reggie stealing home and Bill King on the television call.
First five minutes were awesome, will have to watch rest later. Reggie laid out that catcher. Lot of all-time A’s names in the lineup that day.
Rob Nelson!
Exciting slate of NFL games on TV today:
SF (0-5) @ Washington
Chargers (1-4) @ Oakland
NYG (0-5) @ Denver
NE @ NYJ (Both 3-2, somehow)
Haven’t watched more than a quarter of any team besides Raiders but it seems like there’s a lot of crap football this year.
Yeah, somehow there are more really bad teams than really good ones, and lots of mediocrity in the middle.
Love the fact that every Cubs reliever sucked yesterday. Want Cubs to have a lead after four today, just to see Maddon go to Wade Davis for last 15 outs
I admit, I am not an expert in football rules, but Jets’ TD overturned into a fumble and a ball for Patriots seems fucking stupid
The ruling is that he lost possession of the ball. Despite the fact that he never in any way lost possession of the ball.
FK the Raiders.
Just move to Vegas already if you’re suck this hard.
The risk of being a lame duck is, if the team goes 5-11, a lot of people don’t show up for the December games and the ones who do show up are there to yell what doctorK said. Being a Super Bowl contender would be a lot smarter.
Yeah I’m finding it easier all the time to picture not caring about football anymore.
i wonder which former A want to succeed today!
was joc pederson so bad this year that “Culberson” is better?
so, dave roberts is dumb, yeah?
if this 4 and 5 inning sht continues the DH will be universal in 2 CBAs
Yeah and then those candy ass pitchers won’t be able to say shit on the foundry floor in their offseason jobs at the pig iron smelter.
Eat shit Lackey.
The TBS reporter can join him at the table, for mentioning something from 29 years ago that never happened.
This, always and forever.
so i am trying hulu live.
seems ok.
I notice there is a lot of complaining about non penalty calls in germany
It was strangely satisfying to see Cubs lose a game in which both Lester and Lackey pitched. Now, if someone could just photoshop Geren out of the celebration.
consider the source, but some comments on deadspin peg him as a master tactician that roberts relies on heavily.
I wish there were a way for him to parlay this into managing the Giants.
Boooooooooooooooooo
This park is ridiculous.
I hate everything about it except for the nachos.
this lead means sonny gets 3 innings tops
Didn’t joyce get suspended for this?
carsten charles can call out an on-field affectation as well any 37-yr-old baseball player with a sideways baseball cap could.
I don’t want to say the FIFA rankings are garbage, but the USA somehow moved up in the latest edition.
They are garbage. I wrote an article about it once, so I remember it pretty well. My favorite example is as follows. Imagine Peru fix a friendly in Berlin against the German squad and Peru beat them 5:0. They would actually lose points in FIFA ranking through that.
And this is how each match is valued (if you don’t speak Croatian, ask Soaker)
Does anyone know when the A’s will release Spring Training schedule?
Thanks!
Is there any website that has these for all Cactus League Teams? Official A’s site has only home games
It’s up to the individual teams to release their own schedule. This site will usually post links to them right away. The A’s look like the only Arizona team so far.
They are almost all 1 p.m. starts. A few are in the evening, but that is decided when television decides which games it wants (so don’t assume all the 1:05 listings on that site are etched in stone).
This is well targeted to the demographic of my house.
I don’t know much about “hamilton,” my guess is that its not about Alexander Hamilton per se, But i really like the Drunk history with Lin Manuel Miranda. Also he seems like a nice guy
It is extremely about Alexander Hamilton.
Oakland’s Daveed Diggs played the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.
wow, there is a wide gap in ages of those two
%MINIFYHTMLcd130be894d37334e6759e6314b2de3a35%It’s always remarkable to me that all these stadiums put a premium on baseball field rather than stands. It would be so easy to cut off that ridiculous point in center field. (515)
etf spelling. even I was bothered by that
Also, some of them made the Coliseum’s foul territory look miniscule.
I wonder if that’s left-over cricket habituation.
Some early New York baseball teams had played on polo fields. The stadiums that were built on that site with the horseshoe configurations were always primarily for baseball, but were named the “Polo Grounds” anyway because people associated the baseball team with those early fields. The first one was built of wood and met the fate of a lot of late 19th/early 20th century wooden stadiums. The replacement was steel and concrete. This is what it looked like for most of its life after various additions that extended the grandstands out past the foul poles.
Wasn’t the Polo grounds the one that was like 500′ in dead center?
Yes:
Left Field: 279 ft
Left-Center: 450 ft
Center Field: 483 ft
Right-Center: 449 ft
Right Field: 258 ft
The 483 is visible in photos of the Willie Mays catch. It’s back in that slightly recessed indentation under the clubhouses and scoreboard. The staircases to those clubhouses were in the indentation and in play. Also the bullpens were in fair territory and not fenced; you can see the roofs of the bullpen benches in the corners in left-center and right-center.
Well, I signed up for The Athletic. They got me with donating a portion to fire relief.
Suddenly feeling less good about my decision
I prefer my innovative disruptions without the sanctimonious assholes, is anyone trying that model?

ugh
lol this is a mess
I miss watching starters pitching well into late innings. I understand the evolution but I don’t like it.
Hate Fox’s production.
Hate that these pitchers need 2 minutes to throw each ball.
Hate that FKing Yankee Stadium strikeout whistle from the air conditioner store commercials.
Love Altuve when he’s not playing us.
I cannot love Altuve (or Beltre, or Ichiro when he was a Mariner) any more than I could love Mike Trout.
Agreed.
Disagree here. While Trout has the most talent, each of the other three manifest something much more likeable. Altuve’s triumph over limitations, Ichiro’s obsessive bat control mastery, and Beltre’s screwloosedness. Trout is great but not the least bit endearing.
yeah. Also Altuve seems playful as well
I love Altuve. I wish he was an A.
This
Yes, this. And flanked to his right with Andrus and Beltré
Fuck that whistle sound. Most annoying sound in baseball.
In LA Sunday Lackey took five minutes to throw six pitches in one at bat. Ridiculous.
Hate everything about Lackey.
Sonny’s lack of playoff run support streak continues. 21+ innings now.
I can’t decide if I thought girardi was too slow or too quick with the hook
A Jennifer’s-eyes-only injury in the first quarter of the NBA season.
That was FKing horrific.
Thanks, and go As.
See, let Darvish stay in and he drives* in a run.
Stripes are slimming, Carl Edwards Jr attests.
The Cubs are terrible.
this is bonkers and features friend of th eblog
that is FKing insane
you probably don’t see the AN connection
It does not surprise me in the least to find that guy has gone into a business somewhere on the schmoozy/slimy spectrum.
I’ve actually bought a couple of his mattresses, they’re very nice. And their pillows are the best.
No, I recognize the guy.
I don’t. I have a vague memory that maybe someone who was part of the tailgate crowd had some kind of connection to a local mattress company, but don’t recognize anyone of the names or people in that story. (Edit: OK, I recognize him now.)
Perhaps you’ll recognize him in this picture
(Seriously, this is him)
No one is honest on the internet /keystrokes.
Yeah, that is a crazy story. The Freakonomics Radio story on mattresses, referenced in the article, is a worthy companion piece.
The worst part is when someone says “mattress” to Mr. Lambert and then you have to stand in the tea chest and sing “Jerusalem.”
Heh, I had totally forgotten that one!
This is like the postseasons of stupid ballpark features.
It’s weird how we all just accept that this ballpark has a damn brick wall with plants on it in the outfield.
Doesn’t seem right for that bad baserunning to be bailed out.
no, but we need a 6 game series
this TV announcer s terrible
Well that finish sucked.
Oh, no, not the veggie burger
How is he still finding new ways to be horrible?
FKing hell. These idiots.
and
what the fuck? I mean its stupid. its all knds of logistically problematic, and it is more fodder for isil.
such a saddam hussain move
It looks like Judge’s reawakening is lasting, and the Stros night be in trouble.
I’m quietly
rooting for the Yankees to win this seriesthinking I’d prefer the Yankees win this series, because I’m going to Houston for the A’s series there in April and tickets would likely be cheaper if the home team lost to the Yankees in the ALCS, rather than being the defending World Series champions. Also on the travel subject, I have made a late addition because Cal doesn’t suck as much as I expected. Under the current Pac-12 schedule rotation they only play in Boulder once every four years, and football at Folsom Field has been on my bucket list. So that’s where I’ll be a week from Saturday. It’s about a 1.5-day sprint over there on I-80, and then an ambling trip via various hot springs on the way back, so I’ll be on the road during the World Series. Waiting for weather forecasts as the date gets closer to see if I should put the snow tires on before the trip or run on the regular tires.
No Loneliest Highway in America for you? One doesn’t idly pass up the chance to visit Ely, NV.
I’d imagine the gas cost difference between snow and regular tires on a >2,000 mile round trip is significant.
Oh, the hot springs route is more or less US 50 all the way, and with my projected schedule I would motel in Ely on the westbound. Sometimes looking at the morning weather report it’s -25°F in Ely in December or January, but not that cold in the first week of November.
Gas mileage drops by 15% to 20% with the snow tires, plus this set of snow tires is going into its last year anyway and if I ran them for >2000 miles I’d probably have to replace them before the end of the year rather than deferring that until next fall. It ticked me off when I went to Pullman, WA in the middle of November last year on the snow tires and it was 60° every day.
Ely is the site of the coldest temperature I’ve ever experienced, -23° in late November. My radiator froze solid. It’s one of my four different interesting stories about Ely.
(the other 3 feature a one-armed hotel clerk, the NHP’s collection of seized marijuana paraphernalia, and a prom night couple rear-ending a cop at a stop light).
That’s photoshopped.
Thanks, and go As.
I wonder how anybody could have four Ely stories. It’s not on the quickest route from anywhere to anywhere else. You have to have some agenda, like a hot springs tour, to find yourself there at all. I have been through Ely a few times and have zero Ely stories.
I opened the chains bag this weekend expecting to find a pile of rusty dust. They were in good shape considering I hadn’t installed them in years. Put them on to check fit and looked ridiculous on the test drive around the neighborhood when it was 55 degrees, but that is the better solution than running the snow tires all that distance. A forecast more than a week in advance isn’t worth much but I’m not seeing any issue and in fact for the noon kickoff in Boulder on the final weekend of October…
would she have Secret service in 1993?
*83.
are the ramones punk
supporting subterranean jungle.
it certainly wasn’t “pop”
I guess this means Kotsay isn’t coming back. I hope his daughter is OK.
This article says Kotsay decided not to return to full-time coaching. No update on his daughter’s condition.
Article also notes that Christenson has managed Chapman, Olson, Pinder, Healy, Barreto, and Manaea previously, so that should help, one supposes.
He managed those guys in Nashville and in Midland. Sounds like a keeper.
Springfield of Dreams is on Sunday at noon.
Thanks! DVR is set. Hopefully there won’t be any Kevin Costner.
Nice win Raiders. Now spend the next 10 days celebrating.
They may not have Marshawn Lynch for their next game, but then that could be a positive.
Games, plural, if I had to guess.
Thanks, and go As.
Yes, need to work up to matching the celebratory levels those Bills fans maintain every day.
Amazing win, excruciating last second finish which took like an hour, seemingly. Celebration warranted. And losing their 3rd best running back for a week or two isn’t the end of the world. Probably Marshawn just doesn’t want to go back to Buffalo.
He may still have warrants out there.
The Athletic’s spin on the Lynch incident is quite a bit more positive than BANG’s spin. Per their profile pics, The Athletic’s writer is African-American and BANG’s writer is white.
Interesting. Thompson’s perspective probably comes not only from being black, but also being from Oakland and possibly knowing Lynch and Peters for a long time. This detail is fantastic, by the way:
Kurtenbach’s perspective on Lynch isn’t that different, though. They both pretty much say this is who he is, this is what you get. But Kurtenbach kills the Raiders for their cynicism in signing him:
I was not watching the game (last Sunday did me in), but around 8:30 or so I decided to check the score, saw it was 30-24 Chefs with 0:03 left and the ball at the 1 yard line, so I quickly opened the NFL app and caught the end. Crazy, just plain crazy. The closest game-ending I could think of was the Holy Roller game.
I can’t believe Bob Geren is going to the World Series.
Second time, no?
Ah yes, I somehow forgot about his other illustrious bench coach stint with the Mets.
Dusty’s firing opens up another opportunity for a genius bench coach who has helped guide his team to the World Series twice in three years.
There were some reports a few weeks ago that Geren was a top candidate for the Mets job, but more recent reports say he’s not a candidate there.
I would start to think that this guy’s entire schtick is an elaborate comedy bit if he didn’t have a body count.
He’s REALLY committed to the role.
Method acting. Kaufmann-like.
I would very much enjoy a game 7
I would prefer the Yankees close it out today.
It has been a good series though.
I’m sure Reddick agrees with you though. He needs all the chances he can get for a hit.
In guaranteeing a Houston win today Bruce Jenkins cited Reddick’s 0-for-17 because he’s “due to break out in a major way.”
I love him, but he has to be among the least clutch players in baseball history.
If I look at Fangraphs clutch statistic, added up over every season since 2000, the Crimson Schlong takes the absolute bottom spot, just edging out Matt Kemp.
The last of the Ric Flair “wooooo”ers seemed to have succumbed by that last at-bat.
Makes sense*.
*That Jenkins would say that.
Chapman makes that play.
Go Astros Go!
“Their little leader”
So condescending
If he were white he’d be gritty.
Fox is definitely hoping the Yankees win tomorrow night because Yankees-Dodgers would offset some of the bath they’re going to take on the World Cup, whereas Astros-Dodgers wouldn’t help them that much.
Astros-Dodgers would, either way, add to the list of teams that has won a World Series more recently than the A’s. But whether the Astros or Yankees go, I’d prefer that the Dodgers win it all, because then the Dodgers’ most recent World Series win wouldn’t be their current most recent win.
I hadn’t seen this reported before.
Makes sense. A number of ballparks have some sort of party zone. The Mariners have a big one in center field at Safeco Field.
has a rail
I’m ready for a game 7.
Joe Starkey called the kickoff in Berkeley a couple minutes before the first pitch went silently on TV. We’ll see which game I’m focusing on at 7:30.
Simultaneous replay reviews, and baseball has thrown several pitches and completed the inning before college football resolved its issue and ran the next play.
That call in NE/NYJ last week reminded me of just what a mess replay is in football. Even the dreaded play where a runner loses contact for the base with a millisecond after sliding in safely isn’t bad compared to the endless tweaks to try to clarify what exactly it means for a receiver to have control of a ball.
Baseball running as the heavy favorite at 7:30. Yuck, Cal.
Wrong again. I’ll stick with the Golden Bears.
well shitfuck
What’s with all the first pitch swinging by the Astros?
cant get on base if you dont swing
Maybe the Astros will put in Gregerson.
too soon
Oh well. Go Dodgers.
What was that, 14th pitch that McCann saw and the first one he swung at?
I can’t imagine it helps Reddick, so prone to the self-psyche out, to put the opposing fans on blast that way.
i hope he homers n every ab
Woohoo!
The dissent in this Ninth Circuit opinion upholding Montana’s campaign finance law thinks that taking legislative action in direct exchange for campaign contributions is constitutionally protected because it “constitute[s] nothing more than the trading of influence and access, which are critical mechanisms through which our political system responds to the needs of constituents.”
Thing is, he might be right that the Supreme Court will so hold.
93rd minute winner to put the team through to the playoffs? YESPLZ.
Thanks, and go As.
Still too soon for me with Urena.
Costa Rica are better than the US. He’s not the reason we couldn’t FKing beat T&T.
Thanks, and go As.
True and true.
Nonetheless, too soon.
Somehow this is real and not parody of football guys:
