“Tonight’s trivia question; other than Ed’s attendance in the front row and the umpiring crew, what one special thing did this game and this game have in common?”
I’d disagree. They haven’t been good long enough for that level of entitlement to have set in. Nor did they truly “buy” the championship. A single major FA signing doesn’t get you there. Getting guys you brought up to stay doesn’t get you there. I can absolutely see it happening at some point, but they’re not there yet.
Disagree. A ton of their most recent championships involved a lot of major FA signings and pillaging. Many of their past ones were done by bullshit deals using the A’s a farm team.
They had a lot trades/signings of major free agents, Cone, Wells, Canseco, etc. Not all of them worked out, some were disasters, but many contributed to their run.
Jose Bautista has also set the record for lowest BA with 650+ PAs this season – his 0.201 just beating Odor’s 0.204 (which is tied with Adam Dunn’s 2012 season).
It sucks but not devastatingly. My personal anatomy tutor explains that the transverse process is one of the the little nubs protruding from the otherwise circular vertebrae, painful but a fairly quick heal.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
He’s probably good enough to be in the bullpen next year, but if he is the second best guy out there we are going to lose a lot of games we should win.
It will be interesting to see what kind of a contract he can get after 2018 if he puts up another healthy and productive year. Guys who truly hit BSOHL in their mid-30s are pretty unusual.
Obviously, official now. I’m glad I scooped up a ticket for one of the 3 shows at the Greek to see him one last time. Never a real favorite, but man he wrote some big hits and had a great career.
:( One of my fondest memories was dragging my dad with me to see Tom Petty in 1990 because all my other friends had left for college, and I still had 2 weeks to wait to leave for Stanford. We saw Tabitha Soren doing a live report outside the venue. My dad still talks about it, even though it was the last thing he would ever choose to do and had no clue who Tom Petty was.
The Athletic didn’t cover the A’s or Giants on a daily basis, as both teams had ceased to be relevant by the time they opened for business. To be a serious competitor they will have to upgrade that going into next season. And by February, the prospective writer should be able to look at their business model and make an informed decision on its viability.
The president also seemed to fault the small island for imperiling the United States’s budget by requiring hurricane relief funds, saying, “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack.”
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.

They talked about me on the radio!
“Tonight’s trivia question; other than Ed’s attendance in the front row and the umpiring crew, what one special thing did this game and this game have in common?”
bottom of the 8th they were talking about domes they worked in and forgot olympic stadium. I reminded vince.
they talked about the expos for a minute.
My proudest achievement
The richly-deserved fruits of the decade you’ve spent on your almost Olympic-level effort correcting Vince.
maxwel knows about sacrifice.
Huh. Three more wins and we don’t finish in last.
Really hope Geren gets this gig, just for the LOLs.
Oh man
Holy FK lmao 119mph off the bat
Thanks, and go As.
All respect to the legend, but his World Series slash line (20 games) was .239/.308/.282.
There’s this other guy who slashed .339/.448/.607….
Or .357/.457/.755
Holy moly. That nickname was well earned.
i was surprised and saddened to hear the reply all trio describe the warriors as suffering yankees syndrome during yes-yes-no yesterday.
but maybe it was just facile banter. experts, are the warriors suffering yankees syndrome?
how do you define yankees syndrome?
that people dislike them because they’re so good and/or entitled. whatever people mean when they say someone is the yankees of something.
Yeah, I think they have that. The Durant signing clinched it.
bummer.
um… let’s go yankees!
The only thing that saves Curry from being Jeter is that Curry is actually as good as or better than people think he is.
The Yankees didn’t really buy the championship either.
Disagree. A ton of their most recent championships involved a lot of major FA signings and pillaging. Many of their past ones were done by bullshit deals using the A’s a farm team.
I’m thinking specifically of the 1996-2000 run, when they really became hated by this generation. That was basically homegrown plus Clemens.
After that the certainly tried to buy the title, and I guess you could say they finally did in 2009.
They had a lot trades/signings of major free agents, Cone, Wells, Canseco, etc. Not all of them worked out, some were disasters, but many contributed to their run.
more data points in favor of surprising raul
tying run on in 9th, and bob leaves joyce in to face a lefty. with the season on the line
My game at Coors tomorrow could be the clincher.
Against Kershaw.
Milwaukee chokes up a 6-0 lead to lose to the Cardinals 7-6. Oof.
Now the drama here at Coors is reduced to the weather: First pitch delayed 30 min despite totally dry conditions.
OJ goes free but someone’s in prison.
i don’t know if anyone else will appreciate it, but found ths very funny
undeserving to have the bases loaded wth one out. Glad Canha kept the universe in order with a GIDP
Could still finish anywhere from 9th to 13th in the reverse standings.
EDIT: I guess the worst would be a tie for 12th with Miami, which would give us the draft tiebreaker because we were worse last year.
Hanging breaking pitches against Joey Gallo appear to be a bad idea.
kid, this game is almost 2 hours old and in the 5th, game 161, neither team is in the race.
that check swing is going to be called every time.
safe.
but dick move going to replay her
Out.
No vince, GHWB nor GWB are “texas through and through”
oh man, i left in the 8th. you fks gonna make me look up the score?
I can’t wait for all the drama of 15 games starting at the same time begins!
Think of all the draft positions on the line.
The Tigers getting to a worse record than the Phillies is a stunning accomplishment.
They could even tie the Gnats.
Oddly, Detroit and SF both finished with 75 losses last year.
Detroit picked ahead of them in the draft because they played one fewer game.
I think that means SF has already clinched #1 this time.
The Gnats clearly aren’t taking any chances.
I thought the team with the worse record last year would pick first again in the event of a tie.
Oh, huh. Yeah, I guess that’s right.
I’m scoreboard watching the Pirates game.
Mengden pitching well
It took me waaayyy too long to put this together.
beltre
“A leader in his way”
vince that is just racist
Cookie Rojas; 0.248 in 650 for the ’68 Phillies.
FKWIZ – who has the record of fame rather than shame?
Rickey?
Even though that’s always the right answer, this time it’s wrong.
Bonds, Barry
Nope
I went and looked it up. That record has stood for a long time (more of a hint than a spoiler)
Another hint – he has 6 of the top 10 places.
Bonds has #3 (0.515 in 2001)
FKWIZ part 2: which player has the other 3 spots (and #11)?
Ruth and…Ted Williams?
Bingo!
Ruth has 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 10 & 13 (’23, ’26, ’24, ’21, ’31, ’30 & ’27: 0.545 – 0.486)
Williams has 6, 7, 8 & 11 (’47, ’42, ’46 & ’49: 0.499 – 0.490)
Jose Bautista has also set the record for lowest BA with 650+ PAs this season – his 0.201 just beating Odor’s 0.204 (which is tied with Adam Dunn’s 2012 season).
franklin, its the last day, swing or don’t. bat moves an inch, its a strike
Still just hanging on to the ninth pick. Harper grounds out with the bases loaded, Pirates up 6-4 after five.
minn and detroit in the 6th? 3-1 game.
talk about disrespecting the game paul molitor
4.5 fWAR, 5.2 bWAR, $5.5M
i mean sure, last year canha was hurt, but…
Sandoval costs Giants the top pick.
with the frst pick, the tigers pck matt bush!
wth the second pick, the giants pick Justin verlander
E.J. Manuel?!
Looked surprisingly competent for one drive. Then not so much.
I thought EJ looked pretty sharp on the whole. And Cooper could have done more to thwart that INT. Still, get well soon Derek.
“Transverse process fracture” does not sound good.
It sucks but not devastatingly. My personal anatomy tutor explains that the transverse process is one of the the little nubs protruding from the otherwise circular vertebrae, painful but a fairly quick heal.
Or, worth-a-1000-word version:
Romo missed 1 game when it happened to him.
Cam Newton missed 1 game as well.
Thanks, and go As.
billy butler just cased his last check
It probably won’t end up mattering in this game, but I don’t really understand why the NFL decided to shorten OT.
A’s winning streak will be 180 days long come Opening Day 2018!
I am not happy with Hatcher in the 8th.
nobody should be.
He’s probably good enough to be in the bullpen next year, but if he is the second best guy out there we are going to lose a lot of games we should win.
I think I’ve already made known my feelings about Hatcher.
that is a solid position to take. Hopefully pedroia will have surgery 3/21/18
Ever?
Thanks, and go As.
Lowrie put up 3.9 bWAR. At least these seasons were 4.0 or better:
Dick Green 1969
Mike Gallego 1991
Mark Ellis 2005
Mark Ellis 2007
Mark Ellis 2008
and he gets paid like mike gallego
It will be interesting to see what kind of a contract he can get after 2018 if he puts up another healthy and productive year. Guys who truly hit BSOHL in their mid-30s are pretty unusual.
The quote got cut off. It was meant to end ” … not called Mark Ellis.”
Montas is fine to hide in the 5th and 6th inning.
Hahn is fine as a depth when 5 actual starters can’t break camp, and I don’t think making him some else’s problem is a big deal
Nunez goes in the Canha, davis, healy, smolinski hole.
Hahn needs a change of scenery. For whatever reason, he and the A’s organization haven’t been the right fit.
His command sucks and he was pitching in front of an unimaginably bad defense.
Tom Petty :(
Thanks, and go As.
dammit, no
I was enjoying Running Down A Dream just yesterday.
That song gives me flashbacks to hours wasted on MLB ’05
Now it seems to have been retracted as “unconfirmed”.
Obviously, official now. I’m glad I scooped up a ticket for one of the 3 shows at the Greek to see him one last time. Never a real favorite, but man he wrote some big hits and had a great career.

my dad architected some sort of addition/renovation to tom petty’s house in LA and didn’t know who he was.
Did he end up with a freeway running through the yard?
Slusser has Beane/Forst not worried about Khris’ arbitration number, and suggests Healy as trade bait.

This guy’s twitter thread is fascinating.
Anyone interested in meeting up tomorrow at 5pm to watch the AL Wild Card game – Triple Rock?
So the line was Washington +7? Ouch.
*bangs head against desk repeatedly*
don’t look at the quotes on puerto rico. your desk will suffer.
Yeah, I’m tapping out on that. I can’t deal.
ok. i’ll just give you the fiscal details:
The president also seemed to fault the small island for imperiling the United States’s budget by requiring hurricane relief funds, saying, “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack.”
*bang*
*bang*

oh god I just saw the video of him shooting paper towel rolls into the crowd and I want to die.
the quicker fucker-upper.
not shown, when he moves onto the #10 cans on the left of the table and he nails maude flanders on the head with one.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you
The NBA is going to an All Star Game format where the top vote-getter for each conference is team captain, and those guys choose up teams without regard to conference.
Gimmicky, but the potential for pettiness is high enough that I’m on board.
omg please just give me this one thing
Thanks, and go As.
I mean if we’re dreaming, the one I would take is Ohtani. If you want to eat into the Giants market share, Ohtani and Giancarlo in an offseason would be pretty solid…
That contract. Woof.
Doooooont care
Thanks, and go As.
You thought Mt. Davis was bad.
Someone being able to get to the podium and present her with a P45 (UK equivalent of a pink slip) was even better!
Harvey Weinstein has some balls simultaneously threatening a lawsuit and releasing a statement that sure seems like a tacit admission.
WTF is that last paragraph about?
*makes drinky drinky motion*
*snorts*
Sounds like an extremely meritorious suit you’ve got there, big guy.
