Any info on cause of Cotton’s late scratch? If there was a known issue I’d have thought we’d hear about it before today. No real reason to keep mouths shut just to the Phillies guessing.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
The kid doesn’t look out of place though. I’m impressed.
Between Pulisic, McKennie, and Jonathan Gonzalez who is also 18 and the starting CM for Monterrey in LigaMX, there’s some serious youth international hype right now
And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here
-slusser.
The video lead-in isn’t long enough to tell for certain, but it appears he didn’t come to a complete set when he began to pitch. Can’t do that with a runner on base.
That’s just it, you do have to have a solid pause. Anything that appears to be a continuous motion is likely to be called. Sucks, but it was likely the right call. But we’d need much better video to say that for sure.
He had a few good outings in a row after I decided I hated him, but this one was terrifying.
I was sure one of those pitches running inside with the bases loaded would hit someone.
The A’s are in a tough spot with him. His trade value would be about the same as what Brandon Moss brought, but if they keep him they’ll have to pay >$10M which isn’t worth it. I expect them to find another solution in left field and acquire another Joey Wendle.
I think you guys are overstating this. Davis got $5M this year, so probably $8M next year. Maybe because of the HR/RBI, you’re right and he’ll get $10M, but not more than that. As about a 2 WAR player, that’s still valuable.
Moss got $8M from StL coming off a negative WAR year, rebounded to 1 WAR, and then got 2 years/$12M from KC.
I wouldn’t say “they’ll never do it”; in fact it has precedent: Chris Carter led the NL in home runs last year with a .222/.321/.499 and the Brewers non-tendered him. Khris isn’t that much better at .242/.331/.518.
my first year umpiring at 14 one coach complained to my supervisor that I was consistently shitty. My supervisor replied, “well at least he was consistent.”
I think that applied to the HP umpire today of whom I have never heard
I put the game on the DVR and watched it tonight, without knowing the outcome. In the 9th I was asking myself why I hadn’t just gone over to the workstation, clicked the mouse a few times and spared myself the seemingly inevitable misery.
Poor Maxwell. That might be the last one of those he has to take until spring.
Every time I’m back in the bay area with my wife, I have to convince her that the Mill Valley of my youth was much much different from the way it is now. And I don’t think I’m that old!
Oh my God dont start me on schools. I knew I was spoiled in Clovis unified, but I never realized how all valley kids are spoiled compared to the monstrosity of LAUSD. Little Miss Aces and I were talking today and she is just blown away with how much they let kids get away with. Though she does like that she is now much smarter because the math program for 10th grade is doing what they taught her in 7th back home.
They really don’t understand how law, order, or economics work, do they? Just giving that money away to random people on the street would be a better investment.
I presume Mrs. Scioscia has foreseen the likely outcome and has the plane tickets and the resort reservation lined up for the week of the Division Series.
I watched the Angels game from the exercise bike because it has been snowing on and off at Chateau Soaker this afternoon.
Minnesota is not exactly a juggernaut, but they start a series against Detroit, while the Angels, fresh off getting swept by Cleveland, next face the Astros. That should do it.
Ms s & I plan to be at the 9/29 Twins game against the Tigers at Target Field. Part of my 40th HS reunion weekend. I hadn’t counted on baseball with playoff implications but that could be really fun.
Baseball was fortunate last year with the weather for a Chicago-Cleveland World Series. This would be a good year to push their luck by giving them Denver and Minneapolis. I can imagine it being completed a week before Thanksgiving at Tropicana Field after the 15 snowouts.
Not to complain too much because it was fun and hey they dropped 39 points, but my god the Niners got screwed by possibly the worst Offensive Pass Interference call I have ever seen ever.
And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here
-slusser.
Only Chris Cillizza is dumb enough to ask this seriously, rather than rhetorically.
The thing I don't get here: why wouldn't Trump want to get to ththe bottom of a foreign power trying to influence our election? https://t.co/ndxfbh5voz
CNN gave Cillizza a glass-walled office and had to remove it after three days because he kept slamming full-speed into it like a bluejay. https://t.co/CdVIyXIwo4
A’s lead 1-nil on a defense-aided Lowrie that drove in Semien.
Cotton took his warmup tosses and then was scratched for Alcantara.
I hadn’t heard that the Tigers had a Gil Gamesh situation a few days ago.
Huh. This pitcher too. I’m surprised I wasn’t aware of that.
Any info on cause of Cotton’s late scratch? If there was a known issue I’d have thought we’d hear about it before today. No real reason to keep mouths shut just to the Phillies guessing.
Right groin strain during warmups.
Olson = the Prince we were promised?
Harder not to tag him there.
Got him that time
Nice work by Alcantara. Maybe he pitches better when you surprise him.
May as well test the theory.
We now have an n of 2 on this.
it’d be hilarious to send him to the bullpen everyday and call him out every fifth day
I’m definitely breakfast tailgating Sun 9/24 from 10am on, should anyone like to come by.
At last check the front row seats were available for that game too, if anyone is interested.
No longer available.
I don’t think visquel is “certainly deserving” of HOF.
vince. dont say “fog and grogginess” after a beaning. thosev are clear signs of a concussion.
Got his bell rung
i can’t tell f the woman in orange behind the first base dugout is ordering a pizza or ordering us to evacuate our homes
Scary
I have bad news about our draft positioning.
The NL is baaaaaaad.
So much for the laboratories of democracy.
That would be 18 year old US International Weston McKennie starting for Shalke against Bayern Munich today.
Thanks, and go As.
And already down 2 goals :(
I mean, it’s Bayern.
The kid doesn’t look out of place though. I’m impressed.
Between Pulisic, McKennie, and Jonathan Gonzalez who is also 18 and the starting CM for Monterrey in LigaMX, there’s some serious youth international hype right now
Thanks, and go As.
Bayern is ridiculous. I didn’t even realize they got my boy James to play with Lewandowski.
I’m bad at recognizing balks, but I swear this guy didn’t balk.
tough to see.
The video lead-in isn’t long enough to tell for certain, but it appears he didn’t come to a complete set when he began to pitch. Can’t do that with a runner on base.
I think he stopped, just not for very long.
That’s just it, you do have to have a solid pause. Anything that appears to be a continuous motion is likely to be called. Sucks, but it was likely the right call. But we’d need much better video to say that for sure.
Hell of a call for an ump to make right there, final out in a championship series deciding game.
TOOTBLAN. Goodjob going for three ahead of cabrerra
that slap on franklin’s ass seemed a little harder than necessary miggy
This is getting eerie.
I LIKE THE MATTS
Matt to matt jacks
5 games in a row. Korach just said Big Hurt has the A’s record for that, with 6.
Anibal Sanchez (26 HR in 88 IP) goes tomorrow.
5 in a row is interesting. this x in y stuff bugs me
that was a rough inning only to get 1
Jed, that was ugly AF.
“FK” is right, Jed.
Chapman’s D has been reverting to the mean a bit lately, understandably.
that was a strike in the first couple of innngs
Argh. Would like to see a replay right down the line on that ostensibly fair ball triple. Also Khrush flail.
Yeah impossible to tell from those replays, but pretty implausible.
well, did we expect different?
vince has trouble talking. he has such a passive voice
Nah, we don’t want that run.
No, no, we insist. Take it.
That pitch to Chapman looked preeetty low.
Kids + Jed!
I knew given six or seven chances at a grand slam we’d get one eventually.
Well now
Oh good Hatcher’s pitching
Yikes. That was bad Khris.
Never in doubt
He had a few good outings in a row after I decided I hated him, but this one was terrifying.
I was sure one of those pitches running inside with the bases loaded would hit someone.
He’s better than the Cal guy. That’s all I’ll give him.
WTF Khris.
there are so many bad defenders on this team
Khris is getting worse. Full-time DH next year or non-tender him.
Khris LF, Healy DH still seems better than other alternatives for now.
Unless we think Pinder is a full-time corner OF, maybe.
that is so dissatisfying.
I like khris. named his kid after pablo picaso.
I think he’s a really cool guy, and a really, really bad outfielder.
I kind of think Pinder is that. I’d also be fine putting Powell out there a lot. But maybe it’s all premature until we know what Fowler is.
I am going to go ahead and assume he is ken griffy jr.
I’m not sure Powell will keep hitting enough to play in a corner.
Forgot about Fowler.
I know you’re right about Powell but I am just so thirsty for people who catch the FKing ball and maybe even throw it with reasonable vigor.
Eh, I’d rather Joyce is full-time LF, Fowler/Powell/Pinder get the remaining two.
There’s no way you can nontender a guy on back to back 40/100 seasons.
Thanks, and go As.
The A’s are in a tough spot with him. His trade value would be about the same as what Brandon Moss brought, but if they keep him they’ll have to pay >$10M which isn’t worth it. I expect them to find another solution in left field and acquire another Joey Wendle.
I don’t think he’s even that valuable on the trade market, when you take the salary into account.
OK, you’ve talked me off the ledge. The horrendous defense just had me in my feelings.
They’ll never do it, but they also aren’t going to want to pay what he’ll get in arbitration.
I have an odd feeling that he’d take a somewhat reasonable extension.
Thanks, and go As.
I wouldn’t say “they’ll never do it”; in fact it has precedent: Chris Carter led the NL in home runs last year with a .222/.321/.499 and the Brewers non-tendered him. Khris isn’t that much better at .242/.331/.518.
Treinen for the third day in a row.
Why did Bob use him yesterday?
hungry for win per vince
my first year umpiring at 14 one coach complained to my supervisor that I was consistently shitty. My supervisor replied, “well at least he was consistent.”
I think that applied to the HP umpire today of whom I have never heard
This is a long ass game.
I felt like those Scioscia games drained my remaining strength. No patience at this point for four-hour games vs. the Phillies and Tigers.
Winning road trip (5-3 so far).
10-8 in September.
Happy anniversary, FSU.
Thanks! 19 years so far. I’ll be celebrating tonight by playing in (abd hopefully winning) my softball championship tournament.
Young Mr. Mustache has decided to never give up another run.
Not sure if you meant for this to be sung to the tune of “Mean Mr. Mustard,” but that’s what I’m doing.
Sleeps in the park, shaves in the dark. True Athletic.
Semien was not Stumpfed by that pitch.
Mengden’s loop-de-loop curveball coming out of his stop-and-start motion is just a treat for the eyes when it works.
16 straight scoreless and walkless innings for the kid. I approve.
Against the Philies and Tigers though.
Looks like Olson’s streak ends at 5.
I can’t share in your confidence that the bullpen won’t get this to extra innings.
Orel Hershiser better watch out!
wondering if this is more sexist than ableist or ageist.
Maybe they move the plate forward for some batters.
I’m more pissed about the Socialmedia-ism of it, excluding non-FB/Twitter folks like me.
yeah, thought about that. figured it was umbrella’d by ageism.
sorry!
He’s not old, he’s just out of touch.
(This was the first I’d heard about this too.)
OK, so I finally sat down and listened to the “Hamilton” cast recording several times (thanks to my kids).
My hot take: Everyone was right. It’s extremely good.
“How do we use to get whole?”
Raw Water
Mill Valley used to not be full of guys like this.
Every time I’m back in the bay area with my wife, I have to convince her that the Mill Valley of my youth was much much different from the way it is now. And I don’t think I’m that old!
Yeah. It’s definitely different, though I am too. And the schools are still great.
I miss the schools every day. Didn’t know how good we had it.
My kids go to a separate math school on the weekends because the stuff they are learning in SFUSD is so ridiculously easy.
Its not all Chinese to them?
The woo is strong with this one.
It’s also funny that one of those mentioned in the article is someone named Geoffrey Woo.
I concur. http://deadspin.com/baseball-is-the-horniest-sport-1809943124
Nope. Tennis.
promiscuous, sure. way more frequent than what happens at your typical olympic village every couple years.
but horny? …there are some really gross bullfighting videos you guys aren’t taking into account.
Are vuvuzelas horns?
they’re horns aplenty.
Does Fisher have enough
influencemoney to get something like this though Sacramento? They really don’t understand how law, order, or economics work, do they? Just giving that money away to random people on the street would be a better investment.
gotta say, dotard is way more of a burn than rocket man.
truth told, i liked imagining trump voters pronouncing it like and taking it in the sense of libtard. still. sick burn.
I presume Mrs. Scioscia has foreseen the likely outcome and has the plane tickets and the resort reservation lined up for the week of the Division Series.

Happy last day of summer!
brewers game is cool. playoff atmosphere
Sogard?
lead off batter
Ugh.
yup
I’m sympathetically annoyed at all the Cubs fans in the good seats.
A college buddy of mine now lives in Madison and has become a Brewers fan. Cubs fans are to him as Red Sox or Giants fans are to us.
I always love the 5-man infield defense play.
Disappointing that he didn’t put it in play.
Heller has played himself so hard. Hope the Wynn money was worth it.
But he has so much personal charm and popularity to fall back on.
I remain amazed that this gang has failed to shoot straight so consistently.
Double, homer, triple … surely a single comes next.
Instead we get one of the more ridiculous double plays I’ve seen.
Not to complain too much because it was fun and hey they dropped 39 points, but my god the Niners got screwed by possibly the worst Offensive Pass Interference call I have ever seen ever.
Thanks, and go As.
That was a pretty ugly call. We seem to have obtained the reputation the Raiders used to have (though at least three calls against us got reversed).
I didn’t like the PI call in the end zone either. (though in balance, that roughing call on the crazy Garcon catch was utter BS too).
I’m definitely enjoying the new deep-ball attempts, but boy did our defense look terrible.
AV bait:
oooh! synchronous!
also, that cat.
Only Chris Cillizza is dumb enough to ask this seriously, rather than rhetorically.
Gotta respect the way he has monetized his stupidity.
Oh god.
I feel like there’s something I’m missing here?
Thanks, and go As.
McCain came out today against the latest POS anti-Obamacare bill, probably killing it.
Trump is doing a rally tonight in Alabama to try to save very tall Senator Strange from losing his primary against famous crackpot Roy Moore.
meanwhile…
“A vote for Judge Moore isn’t a vote against the president, it is a vote for the people’s agenda that elected the president.”
try and guess who said that before you click.
Ahahahahaha
It’s hilarious except for the fact that whichever of those lunatics wins the primary will probably also win the general election.
The Democrat maaaaaaaaaaaybe has a chance against Moore. But yeah.
Trump campaigning for two different losers in the same election would be pretty cool.
Yes
Yep
Accurate ranking (he says never having watched a minute of Enterprise)
Getting swept by the A’s will not be tolerated.
God Milo and his Cal Patriot stooges sure are some incompetent buffoons. It would be funny except that they’re costing my city real money.
I’m loving the analogy to the Fyre Festival.
