Four for the price of three 157

Houston arrives on their long slow coast into the playoffs, whereupon their long months without competitive threats will manifest in a three-and-out. The A’s promise not to interrupt.

Now, though, four games in three days, with the A’s throwing up the daunting quartet of Cotton, Gossett-n-Mengden, and Graveman respectively.

Down 2-0 in the first on Friday as Cotton yields his 10th homer in his last 28 innings. That’s, um, not great.

      431 yards passing allowed, boy does that sound familiar. With the January firing and hiring there’s not much Wilcox could do about Dykes’ “defense” this season. Nevertheless, trailing to start the fourth quarter against this titanic foe, Cal deals with the adversity and comes up with a stirring comeback for the win. I expect that Wichita voter to bump us up a couple spots…hell, maybe even into his Top 20.

        The NFL used to bend over backwards to make sure the Raiders and 49ers weren’t playing concurrently on Sunday. Whichever team was at home with a 1:05/1:25 Sunday start, the other would be either on the road with a 10:00 Pacific start, playing in the Thursday, Sunday or Monday night game, or on its bye week. If one team played on the road in the morning and the other at home in the afternoon, those were the only two games shown on TV in the Bay Area. Edit: Actually it depends on which network was showing the home afternoon game, but the Bay Area did lose a lot of third games this way.

        This year the Raiders and 49ers play concurrently on Sunday six times, four at 1:05/1:25 and two at 10:00. So you will get a third game in the other time slot in those six weeks. This coming Sunday, the 49ers still pre-empt the Cowboys Game of the Week (at Denver) but you do get Philadelphia at Kansas City as your third game in the morning.

          If one team played on the road in the morning and the other at home in the afternoon, those were the only two games shown on TV in the Bay Area.

          This week was exactly that situation, but there was also another early game shown. I think the rule now is that there can’t be a competing game in the same time slot as the team playing at home. It might be that they used to disallow a second game in either time slot when a local team was at home (which, as you say, in two team markets was almost always).

          • Soaker Soaker Sep 11,2017 12:28 pm || Up

            Yeah, I misstated the point initially. Yesterday the 49ers home game was on Fox, which had the doubleheader, so Fox could show its morning game head-to-head with the Raiders’ road game.

            If the “singleheader network” is showing a Raiders or 49ers home game on Sunday afternoon, the “doubleheader network” won’t be able to show its afternoon game opposite that one. This still happens four times in the Bay Area this season, but the concurrent scheduling has helped to reduce that from five last year and seven in 2015, according to the lists on the TV nerd forum.

            The worst example for the Bay Area appears to be Week 16/December 24. CBS has the singleheader and is required to show Jacksonville at San Francisco (dear god) in the afternoon slot. Fox can show a morning game, but cannot show its afternoon game (would be either Seattle at Dallas or NY Giants at Arizona).

          There are plenty of tickets available for tomorrow’s game between 3-0 Cal and #5 U$C.

          The lowest-priced adult ticket on Calbears.com is $78 ($60 for kids and seniors). The last time we had a really good team (Rodgers, Lynch), my recollection is that end-zone general admission was $15. That’s worse than Bay Area housing prices. Gotta pay for the stadium upgrade and SAHPC somehow though.

          The other issue depressing Pac-12 football attendance is that they don’t announce a kickoff time until 12 days before the game. It could be any time between noon and 8 p.m. And because the Pac-12 is the only premier conference whose games can kick off after East Coast and Midwest prime time games have ended, ESPN and Fox push a lot of them into those night slots, which is lousy especially after the middle of October.

    Query for Soaker (or anyone else who knows): a red sox fan acquaintance was claiming that the policy against electronic communication from the dugout was merely an “unwritten rule.” He is right that it is not part of the official rules which cover the mechanics of game play itself. I’m quite sure they are written somewhere, though. But where?

    TINSTAAFK
    • Soaker Soaker Sep 11,2017 3:27 pm || Up

      Attachment 53 to the current CBA covers the use of electronic devices in the dugout. It says, in part:

      2. To the extent the Office of the Commissioner permits Club-issued mobile devices in the dugout, such devices must be used solely to capture image and video content of the game on the field, of the dugout or the fans in the stands (“Content”) during Spring Training, the championship season, the All-Star Game and/or the post-season, and any use of the device and Content must adhere to the following protocols:

      b. All Content captured by such mobile devices must be uploaded securely to a private content sharing site, and the content will be mutually screened by representatives of the Office of the Commissioner and the Players Association to ensure that it meets the criteria set forth in paragraph (h) below.

      So I guess the Red Sox would have had to share whatever information they were obtaining?

      • Soaker Soaker Sep 11,2017 3:44 pm || Up

        Further checking suggests that is mostly intended to restrict what images can be taken in the dugout and posted publicly on social media. Back when Sandy Alderson was working for MLB he issued a memo in response to some lower-tech sign-stealing issue.

        Please be reminded that the use of electronic equipment during a game is restricted. No club shall use electronic equipment, including walkie-talkies and cellular telephones, to communicate to or with any on-field personnel, including those, in the dugout, bullpen, field and–during the game–the clubhouse. Such equipment may not be used for the purpose of stealing signs or conveying information designed to give a club an advantage.

        • andeux andeux Sep 11,2017 3:53 pm || Up

          Thanks.
          That CBA clause might cover it incidentally, but it’s odd that the plain language of the Alderson memo isn’t in either the Rules or the CBA.

          • Soaker Soaker Sep 11,2017 4:23 pm || Up

            I don’t think Alderson’s total prohibition is necessary. A pitching coach could call pitches by speaking to the pitcher and catcher via earphone; that’s no different from the OC speaking to the quarterback.

              They could (and in fact that has recently been proposed as a solution) but it would require a rule change to allow it and set new limits for what is and isn’t allowed, just as it did in football. And whatever the rules are, the Boston team will still find some way to break them.

      If they get to 20, 10 of the wins will be against the two worst teams in the league:

      6 vs. Tigers (60-82)
      4 vs. White Sox (56-86)
      3 vs. Orioles (71-72)
      3 vs. Royals (71-71)
      3 vs. Yankees (77-65)
      1 vs. Red Sox (81-62)

      The 2002 A’s were also accused of fattening up on the shitty teams.

      3 vs. Tigers (55-106)
      5 vs. Royals (62-100)
      4 vs. Indians (74-88) (man was that a horrible AL Central)
      2 vs. Blue Jays (78-84)
      3 vs. White Sox (81-81)
      3 vs. Twins (94-67)

                I think ESPN got that standalone game on the Thursday after the All-Star Game as a replacement for the standalone game on the first Sunday night. In checking this, I noticed that only 12 games are scheduled on Sunday, April 1, and it’s not entirely because of teams having to travel for a daytime opener on Monday. For example, the Rockies and D-Backs play Thursday, Friday and Saturday but are off Sunday, and then the D-Backs remain at home while the Rockies travel from Phoenix to San Diego for a Monday night game. Maybe some teams requested that because 4/1 is Easter Sunday?

              I haven’t been to either Arlington or Houston in over 25 years, so both those parks are new to me, and Arlington will probably become my first three-ballpark town in a few years. The schedule maker nailed that one, because there’s no way I would spend a full week in Texas after about the middle of May. That one is pretty much a definite.

              San Diego was fun when I saw the A’s there a couple years ago. It’s worth the splurge to stay in a decent place downtown with the ballpark and all the dining and drinking options within a short walk.
