Except for the Scioscia/Angels part, I hate those guys.
Monday brings us Parker Bridwell (sounds like Exeter, actually Hereford) vs Chris “Nondescript” Smith. Tuesday is the Lost Season Bowl of Garrett Richards vs Kendall Graveman. Wednesday matinee of Skaggs v Manaea. Two of three in the daylight presumably favors the less undead Oaklanders.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Hah, knock him all the way back to Croxton-on-Worcester.
“Chris Smith might not know how to pitch with a four run lead.” Glen’s prophetic words.
Chris Smith might not know how to pitch.
Valbuena’s ball flew out of the yard in the odd climate conditions. This feels like a good day for a 15-13 barnburner.
Or the A’s offense gets off to a good start and then disappears.
if I were luis valbuena, I would have a no trade clause to anywhere outside the al west and the A’s
i don’t like turning off games because they are gong poorly. Its just I only really hate the angels.
Chris Smith may have to fall back to his day job of President of Cresco.
Billy/David:
A pitching staff.
Build one.
What do you want, they built two, 2000 and 2012. Not due for another for seven more years.
This game might still be going when I light my grill in an hour.
Bottom of the 8th, and the clock says it is time to light your “grill.”
This game might still be going when dessert is served in an hour.
What’s for dessert? Pie, or shit sandwich?
Mpre beer.
And you guys thought Scioscia was overmanaging before rosters expanded.
That was a pretty brutal call.
Great, ump show time.
Shutdown inning!
Fail
“And it’s 20 consecutive victories, on an unbelievable night…”
Olson HR -> Scioscia face
Scioooooooocia face
astros pxp guys mocking scioscia
Red Sox broadcasters too. Their pxp guy regularly complains about September expanded rosters and he pointed to this game as the epitome of what’s wrong.
Oh man. I hope nobody here actually spent 4 hours 38 minutes of his or her life on that.
I’m generally in favor of never rooting for tanking in baseball unless there is that 1 in 25 year Harper type projected to go number one.
Having typed that, the fact that this shit show of a team could actually pick outside the top five is fucking ludicrous.
So while I cannot root for them to lose, I thinK that I can root for them not to win (except against the Slegna).
5-1 since this.
(Currently tied with the Mets for the sixth pick)
Ugh.
A’s get tebreaker due to last years shittier record, yeah?
12-4 since this.
(Currently the 10th pick with 12th pick now a strong possibility)
Linking for the image, which actually made me laugh out loud.
Syria got an equalizer at the death in Tehran* to keep alive its improbable hopes of qualifying for its first World Cup.
To qualify, Syria will have to win a home-and-home** playoff against Saudia Arabia or Australia, and then another home-and-home against the fourth place team from North/Central America which could be the USA.
*Iran had already qualified so insert conspiracy theory here
**Syria has been playing its “home” matches in Krubong, Malaysia.
visa will be granted just to ramp up the Military industrial complex for the match
Disgraceful
It is unfathomable how awful these people truly are. I have a hard time thinking of even one issue where they haven’t done the exact opposite of what I want them to do.
Honduras-USA from 95 degree San Pedro Sula kicking in 5 minutes on BEIN Sports.
The shit is now up to our ears.
Trying to save Trump the embarrassing decision whether to boycott Russia 2018.
Trump already had his favorite hotel suite booked.
Even if they come back and salvage somethign from this, Arena is a fucking joke.
Thanks, and go As.
If they somehow qualify, I’m really not OK with him taking the team to Russia.
I didn’t really want him brought back in the first place. 1 point out of 6 against Costa Rica and Honduras is unforgivable.
Thanks, and go As.
This is a laughably bad performance.
And the tide’s still rising…
Poking our nose above the steaming pile for the moment…
On one hand, thank god. OTOH, this team and its management are clearly in need of a shock of some sort
Yup
scioscia is so frustrating
a walk and two weakly hit balls, a missed cut off and 2nd and third no out
ffs
chapman is smart at baseball
double, single, k, double
1 run
k
k
PADL
Being able to wear shorts to an A’s night game is a rare treat. Runs would really just be a bonus.
ask again
Magic 8-ball can we have more bonus runs?
FOSSE CALLED IT*
*0.00000002% correct
valbuena kills my team, but I love that he bat flips a walk
he has faced 2 lefties and walked twice
fuck
andeux seems bundled up
I was in short sleeves for most of the game. Must have just put on my sweatshirt when you posted that.
remind me never to go to an angels game in september
Everybody thought the September roster-size issues were going to be addressed in the CBA negotiations, with the apparent exception of the people who were negotiating the new CBA. I blame them for punting on an obvious problem.
Shrink the time on/off the roster to 3-4 days from 10 unless both teams have been eliminated at which point the 25 man roster gets “declare” but all 40 are allowed to play. Eliminated teams playing against each other should still be allowed to play a “spring-like” game, teams in it (or playing teams in it) shouldn’t. The declaration part keeps poor teams from making unfair moves to load up against teams that are still in it. Option B: same situation except keeping the 10 days.
It’s an easy problem to solve, they just have to want to. Personally, I don’t really care that much about it. They’ve played this way for long enough.
Scioscia everyone hates you.
Almost three hours to play six innings?!
That clock in center field evidently isn’t much of a solution.
Maldenado is just as dely of gamey and scioscia
Semien should have run towards first and underhanded that
meanwhile in Boston they’ve played 3x the innings in the same amount of time.
Sac bunt pays off in a 7-6 game, go figure.
jario.
sigh
An unscored upon Jairo 9th here ranks as one of his best outings of the year, for real, sad as that is.
Walkoff pie? I’m thinking walkoff pie.
when you come out your tent near the clavey one morning, and realize you left out all night that superb cherry cobler from the manteca stand.
Extra innings after nine took 3:45. Crowd pleasing.
OTOH I got to see Oski hit wiffle balls way worse than Stomper, so there’s that.
silver lining: this terrible angels team has hope
Looking forward to the 10, 15, etc. year retrospectives on this losing streak.
With a montage of Vince calls to properly capture the suck.
Did anyone else (bother watching that game and) think it was questionable to let Maxwell lead off the bottom of the 10th down by a run? Healy and Canha were both available on the bench.
Platoon advantage uber alles. (cue Future Ed re: Canha)
healey, tho
Either Trump didn’t like the bad press or this is all just an elaborate way to humiliate Sessions.
He’s trying to create a chip to trade for his idiotic wall. Somehow I don’t think it’ll work out as he intends.
Nancy will absolutely eat his lunch if he really tries to start negotiating with her.
Still feeling pretty good about this.
Yeah. If there’s any ray of hope at all right now, its that Trump sees he can receive praise if he does what Nancy says.
He would be so much happier working with her as speaker instead of Ryan if it weren’t for the whole investigations and impeachment thing.
I am so conflicted. On the one hand I like that Nancy is fixing things on the other I don’t trust anything
Well, let’s get her a majority in 2018 then.
Everything about this is hilarious.
Brilliant:
Might as well give everyone free passes, then.
That’s all really strange. We had work with them a few years back and had temp workers doing stuff within their system. They flat out refused to give them free access after they got off to leave the job to go home. Very, very strict about it. As in they *demanded* they leave the station they were in and come back in.
It’s a negotiated union benefit, so excluding temps makes complete sense.
That one didn’t occur to me. That would actually make more sense with that in mind. Their PR person should have led with that if she could.
No one is safe from the humiliation.
I’m sure our pitchers will make this 1-0 lead stand up.
That was really weird. HP ump tossed Chapman for jawing with and staring at the Angels’ catcher before his AB.
Now a warning to the dugouts. WTF is going on.
Some argument happened earlier between Canha and Graterol.
That last thing, Chapman definitely initiated it, because he was talking to Graterol while Graterol was looking at Scioscia.
Chapman: “I went to Cal State Fullerton, not Cal, but goddammit you do NOT say the things about Cal you said to Mark.”
Fosse theory is that Graterol thought Chapman was relaying signs to Canha during the earlier AB.
My solution to suspected sign-stealing is pretty simple. If the pitcher and catcher think that’s happening, the catcher gives a curveball sign, and the pitcher throws a fastball up and in.
I’m really curious what Chapman could have said there to justify getting tossed. There was no physical altercation, and Chapman never moved toward Graterol.
The umpire told Chapman to shut up, but Chapman continued to talk to Graterol, presumably saying something less pleasant than offering a friendly postgame bong hit.
Seems pretty petty of the ump considering Chapman wasn’t being demonstrative at all. Graterol is the one who got up and took off his mask like he wanted to go.
Yeah, seemed like Graterol was the aggressor.
Since when do you get tossed for jawing at the other team?
When the ump has already told you that he doesn’t care who started it, one more word and you will be sent to your room and lose your Nintendo privileges.
Speaking of, this is hilarious:
That’s not even Joe West.
Nunez’s range looks a little less expansive than Chapman’s.
Cal now among the “Others Receiving Votes” part of the AP poll!
“A vote”, actually (for #24) from some guy in Wichita who dreams of being able to flee Kansas and move to the West Coast (8 Pac-12 teams in his 25).
Comparing that to his vote this week, Cal holds steady at #24 by beating Weber State by 13 at home, while Utah beats BYU in Provo but drops from #23 to out of the money.
I didn’t see any of this week’s game but after the opener I still choose to believe that Cal is secretly awesome. Watch out, Ole Miss.
This injury isn’t going to help.
We seem to be having an inverse issue.
Mr. Wichita still has 3-1 Cal on his ballot at #24.
Less than two months until the hoops team tips off.
Five votes in the coaches poll! Though Army got two votes, so maybe not that big an accomplishment.
And the bullpen marches in. If it weren’t thunderstorming outside I would flee right now.
Plot twist!
That’s sad they don’t feel like they can beat the A’s without stealing signs.
Oh good, Chris Hatcher for the third day in a row.
DirecTV has temporarily succumbed to the thunderstorm, but rather than fire up the app I will just let Ken deliver the bad news.
Where were you when the A’s finally won a damn game?
Firenze, since you’re asking.
Buona risposta
in court having my battery die.
usually there’s an assault and in that sentence.
It is what it is (1-5, 4.71).
I hope you and @sunnyangela end up in the same shitcan.
Just in case anyone needed more reason to despise New England:
Also fuck the NFL for putting our “home” game vs NE in Mexico City.
So who are you rooting for tonight?
The Four Horsemen.
Bridge players bait (forward to today’s too).
When I was a bored kid, I used to read the bridge column and try to reverse engineer how the game worked. I think I mostly figured out. Someday I will actually play.
That makes you already better than me.
I’m certainly a good dummy.
The mechanics of the card play is mostly the same as other partnership trick-taking games like spades or euchre.
The meaning of the final contract is very simple: n of a suit means you are trying to take n+6 tricks with that suit as trump.
The scoring (reward for making your contract, penalty for not making it) is complicated in its details, but just a big lookup table, and conceptually not too hard.
The auction as a coded conversation revealing bits of information about your hand in order to try to reach that final contract is basically incomprehensible without learning its rules (which are not actually part of the rules of the game, but social conventions that have developed over time, and can be different for every partnership). That part makes for a very steep learning curve.
Unwritten rules!
FKing ACOL!
45 has converted me to strong No Trump.
heh
This is why we can’t play any more. Our hands would all just go to 7 NT.
Kiki Vandeweghe’s badass niece being named Coco Vandeweghe is one of those little things that makes me happy.
We saw her on an outer court years ago when she was a teen, and I loved that bit as well. Plus, you could tell she had game, not to mention a volatile temper. I’ve followed her since, and it was good to see her run this year until she ran into the Madison Keys buzz saw tonight.
Al Michaels: “New England has better Buffalo players than Buffalo does.” Ouch.
Worse than Stephon Gilmore of the last-place Patriots?
Yeah, that is bad.
I remember a lot about the A’s of the 70’s but I didn’t remember this. Might have to check out this guy’s new book.
This excerpt is a nice companion.
The book sounds great.
95mph WTF
Thanks, and go As.
That’s a lot of arm-side run, but I think the camera angle is part of the reason it looks so crazy.
15 in a row for the Tribe, that’s close enough.
16
So anybody starting to get worried for the 20 game streak? I’m mostly fine with the Indians (minus Chief Wahoo), but they are likely Cavs fans so…
Still very unlikely. Mrs. N would love it though.
Also don’t ignore the D-backs (next 7 games at home).
read the thread fsu
I like most of the clevelands, trever bauer, although educated at a good institution, is an idiot.
tom hamilton is a delight. and no one wants to be larry czonka
I have no problem wanting the A’s to remain the record holders, also I’m more a Mercury Morris man myself.
I’d care more if were an MLB record and not just an AL one. That being said, until they change their name, fuck them.
Yes, the A’s remaining the record holder would be nice. but I won’t be offended.
“Customers”
Well, I am. I paid Equifax $10 originally to put the security freeze on my report, circa 2002, and I have to pay them another $10 every time I want it lifted temporarily. Over 15 years I must have paid them around $100 (every time I have moved plus an occasional application for new credit), and in at least the initial freeze plus the moving cases the same to Experian and Trans Union. It’s pocket change compared to the cost of fixing an identity theft that’s actually put to use by opening fraudulent accounts and IMO worth the occasional inconvenience if you’re not applying for credit very often.
Hate it when I accidentally sign onto Supreme Court briefs that quote me multiple times.
‘My allegiance is always to my constituents and never to a party.’ For a few days at least.
Does this violate his sentence?
Tiger Woods is sitting in the front row of this Nadal match wearing a Raiders jacket.
