    I had to rewind to that ad for Cal Football in the last half-inning to make sure I saw it right. It says the Bears are hosting Ole Miss on Saturday, September 23. If they prepare for Ole Miss on September 23 they will have a bit of a problem, because the schedule says they’re playing USC on that date.

    The Astros couldn’t even get their home uniforms out of Houston. Rangers are the road team but they are wearing the white.

    There are a few thousand people in there, some of whom may be trying to prove how much beer they can drink during a baseball game (judging by some of the odd crowd reactions already). One day the Cactus League was rained out so they moved a WBC game into Chase Field, same deal of $10 and entirely general admission. It was different, people who never get to sit in the good seats having that opportunity.

    This is obviously correct and will it will probably be years before companies adjust accordingly.

    Long, easy-to-remember phrases now get the nod over crazy characters, and users should be forced to change passwords only if there is a sign they may have been stolen, says NIST, the federal agency that helps set industrial standards in the U.S.

    • Soaker Soaker Aug 29,2017 7:05 pm || Up

      Before “companies” adjust accordingly? Have you ever created an account with the Social Security Administration and then tried to log into it again a few months later. I just checked it again. 8-20 characters, Upper Case, lower case, number and $@%#& symbol and must be changed every six months.

    • andeux andeux Aug 29,2017 7:17 pm || Up

      Our IT people claim they have to keep the current policy (something like what Soaker listed but changed every three months) because it is required by some contracts with customers (other large companies).

        I finally went with Lastpass Premium, whose price was just increased BTW, so the answer to challenge questions like “What was your first girlfriend’s name?” is something like nJ7\x?c\YC9>aU]H (which Password Generator tells me can be remembered as “nut JACK 7 \ xbox ? coffee \ YELP COFFEE 9 > apple USA ] HULU”).

        • colin colin Aug 30,2017 10:11 am || Up

          What does premium actually provide? I’m using the free version of Lastpass. When I signed up, it seemed like the point of premium was to get cell phone support, but I think they have that now in the free version.

          • Soaker Soaker Aug 30,2017 10:31 am || Up

            With their recent changes I need to check before it auto-renews in a few weeks. When I got it originally, there had to be separate free accounts for computer and phone, or the other option was to have a Premium account for $12/year which enabled syncing of a single account across all devices. The separate free accounts would be a ridiculous PITA to (a) set up originally and (b) make any subsequent changes, so for $12 I said fine, do it that way. Now that it’s $24/year I’ll look at my options again.

            Edit: I think you are right; I can probably delete that auto-renew.

            • Soaker Soaker Aug 30,2017 11:06 am || Up

              That auto-renew date also reminds me that it’s been a year on the Google Fi service, and that has worked well everywhere I’ve been…Hawaii, Oregon, Florida. I am not a data user, just a look at the weather radar or a Yelp search of restaurants in the town I’m driving through or a quick between-innings FK at the ballpark. I have their lightest data plan and get a credit for unused data every month anyway, so the monthly bill is always between about $23 and $25.

      I don’t understand this paragraph

      Dan Szymborski, father of ZiPS, pointed out that today’s game has a low batting average and that’s relevant. “Every batting-average threshold lower,” he wrote to me, “the number of people capable of hitting increases exponentially.”

      at all. The reasoning (of what I think he’s saying) seems completely backwards. Presumably the underlying skill gap between the average schlub and the best hitters in the world has not decreased significantly. So if those hitters are getting fewer hits now than they used to, doesn’t it stand to reason that schlub’s chance would also be lower?

    NYT has an interesting piece today on Ed Cunningham, who I thought was one of ESPN’s better analysts on college football but walked away from his job after last season. He doesn’t hate the game but…

    Cunningham, 48, resigned from one of the top jobs in sports broadcasting because of his growing discomfort with the damage being inflicted on the players he was watching each week. The hits kept coming, right in front of him, until Cunningham said he could not, in good conscience, continue his supporting role in football’s multibillion-dollar apparatus.

    Football has seen high-profile N.F.L. players retire early, even pre-emptively, out of concern about their long-term health, with particular worry for the brain. But Cunningham may be the first leading broadcaster to step away from football for a related reason — because it felt wrong to be such a close witness to the carnage, profiting from a sport that he knows is killing some of its participants.

    “In its current state, there are some real dangers: broken limbs, wear and tear,” Cunningham said. “But the real crux of this is that I just don’t think the game is safe for the brain. To me, it’s unacceptable.”

    Some good World Cup qualifiers on tap today for your off day entertainment. The best two in terms of teams and stakes:

    -France x Netherlands (11:35 on ESPNNEWS)

    Netherlands is in big qualification trouble and France isn’t out of the woods yet either.

    -Uruguay x Argentina (4:00 on BEIN Espanol)

    First competitive match for Argentina under the swashbuckling Jorge Sampaoli. Argentina currently sits outside the automatic qualifier spots, and Uruguay is only a point better than that so a lot on the line here. Messi is back after his suspension for naughty language was reduced on appeal.

    If you’d rather just watch a bunch of goals, FS1 is showing Portugal x Faroe Islands.

      France is demolishing the Dutch. Complete domination.

      France has to be co-favorite (with Germany) to win the whole thing. I don’t think the Dutch will be burdening us with their presence in Russia.

      Complete shit performance. These are supposed to be the games Arena was brought back to win and “just get to the WC” and he laid an egg.

      I can waive away a bad game by Howard, even though it’s pretty sad we’re still relying on him (he’s no Gigi Buffon) and also from Cameron who had his first bad game for the US in years and years.

      The rest of the lineup was crap. Tim fucking Ream at CB over Omar Gonzalez was horrible. Graham Zusi is bad. Nagbe didn’t do shit centrally with Bradley, Pulisic was wasted on the wing trying to be technical while CONCACAF players tried to beat his ass, and Wood/Altidore were playing the wrong way. Altidore needed to come get the ball and Wood needed to play off him, but Arena had Altidore farther up and Wood dropped beneath him.

      If they don’t get 3 at Honduras, they might not make the WC and that will kill soccer in America.

      And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

      Thanks, and go As.

        • MikeV MikeV Sep 5,2017 9:37 am || Up

          What’s wrong is the changing of the guard isn’t happening quickly enough.

          When injuries to Yedlin and John Brooks can torpedo your entire team because Arena won’t move on from guys like Besler, Zusi, or hell Damarcus Beasley.

          It was absolutely criminal that Timmmy Chandler and Danny Williams weren’t called into these WCQs. Constantly bringing Dax fucking McCarty over Williams is insulting.

          And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

          Thanks, and go As.

          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Sep 5,2017 10:22 am || Up

            I think part of the problem is that the players in that 23-28 range just haven’t panned out. That left both Klinsmann and Arena reluctant to hand them the reins.

            But I also think the team Arena sent out on Friday should have been able to handle Costa Rica at home. They just looked confused, and a little soft.

            • MikeV MikeV Sep 5,2017 12:00 pm || Up

              Partially yes, but also partially because some haven’t been given chances. Greg Garza has been playing well in Liga MX for years and now is one of the best LBs in MLS, and all he could manage was to be called into Camp Cupcake in January. He’s a better LB than Villafana, easily. Eric Lichaj has been forgotten about. I already mentioned Danny Williams and Timmy Chandler.

              I mean I’m a big MLS fan, but there are PLENTY of players who can be called in over above average MLS guys.

              And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

              Thanks, and go As.

    As an aside, how the hell can Marco Urena be so average for the Quakes but then turn into Ronaldo/Zlatan/Messi for Costa Rica?
