Games 128-130: Harvey, Eck, Little League 103

First of all I’d like to salute Harvey, whose name will be invoked many times this weekend.

View post on imgur.com

He’s hanging with Emmett Ashford there, the first African-American umpire in the major leagues (1966-1970).

It’s “Players’ Weekend”, or “Dreadful Little League Uniforms Weekend”. I’ll try to withstand the visual assault tonight but probably won’t be around Saturday or Sunday. Saturday is Eck’s bobblehead day, and at some point over the weekend they are naming one of the Coliseum gates after him.

Two of the top six pitchers in home runs per 9 innings (minimum 60 innings, a number cherry-picked so I could take a jab at A.J. “Boom Boom” Griffin) will work in this series. I was surprised that Jharel Cotton didn’t even make the top 30 on that list.

Friday at 7:05: Nick Martinez vs. Kendall Graveman
Martinez ranks 6th in HR/9 (2.24).

Saturday at 1:05: Cole Hamels vs. Sean Manaea

Sunday at 1:05: A.J. Griffin vs. Jharel Cotton
Griffin is tied for 4th in HR/9 (2.25).

Your 2017 MLB HR/9 leader is Bronson Arroyo, who served up 23 HR in 71 innings (2.92 HR/9) for the Reds before hurting his shoulder and presumably ending his career.

        Big Island. Launched from the Kalapana viewing area in afternoon, rented bikes for the first 5 miles then trekked over lava field about an hour to where active flow was happening. Then after sunset back down to coast and watched open flowing orange-red lava hitting the Pacific with plumes of steam. Just extraordinary.

            Did two weeks in Spain, one in Barcelona, one driving around northern coast. Loved Barcelona, immediately became one of my favorite cities anywhere. Great vibe, spectacular architecture, etc. Stayed in L’Eixanple district. San Sebastian also super neat. Could have skipped Vigo, but Nurse Upgrade really wanted to visit Islas Cies. I liked driving all over the country though, very impressed with infrastructure…roads, trains, transit, solar and wind farms, etc. Skipped Madrid except to return rental car and hop train back to Barcelona. To which I will definitely return.

              Is *she* senile? He may very well be there for all 4 years. Maybe even get re-elected. But the notion that he can change or will ever be a good President? That takes such extreme levels of mental gymnastics just to fantasize about believing that might have a snowball’s chance in hell of an inkling of a fraction of a possibility to think about.

              • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Aug 30,2017 12:51 pm || Up

                A lot of people in Washington (including journalists) just don’t want to admit themselves how broken Trump is, because admitting it would require extreme measures that they have trouble contemplating. Ironically, I’ll bet half of the Republican senate caucus is clearer-eyed on this than DiFi is.

                  “Maybe he’ll pivot!” was just barely tenable during the primaries, unrealistic by November, and now completely pathological.

                • dmoas Aug 30,2017 2:51 pm || Up

                  I don’t mind the “I think he’s going to last 4 years or more” thing. That’s still absolutely plausible given our current political landscape. This notion that he’ll get better when the man is pushing 80 and is who he’s always been is unacceptable. There’s really no reason to play lip service to that. You don’t have to say he won’t change either. It’s not as if the option needs to be shared at all. But if you’re offering it and you’re suggesting, it’s time to walk away. Coming a Democrat in a solid blue state, that just doesn’t fly. You’re no longer capable of handling your job.

                  That doesn’t even get into the journalists. Literally every time he reads from a prompter we get the “Damn he’s Presidential!” bullshit. Then less than 24 hours later he speaks on the fly and they retract it. That shit is definitely pathological wish casting.

                • nevermoor nevermoor Aug 31,2017 3:08 pm || Up

                  Right. I, for one, think there’s no chance he resigns (and only a small chance he doesn’t run again).

          It’s tough, man. She has a big campaign war chest. You could try to run to her left and squeak by the Republican sacrificial lamb into second place, but you would probably lack any institutional party support. And then she would swamp you with advertising in the general and meanwhile you’ve lost your house seat or your spot in Sacramento.

          Maybe someone like Villaraigosa could be persuaded to take a shot if he decided he can’t beat Gavin for governor, but it would take some serious guts to try.

            Yeah, only feasible primary oppo would be a Tom Steyer / Tim Cook-type who could run left and self-finance. But CA elections have not been kind to wealthy outsiders.

            • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Aug 30,2017 2:49 pm || Up

              Another problem is that if you run far enough to her left to bring out Bernie type folks in the primary, you may be screwed in the general when she’ll get all the Republican votes.

              To really pull it off, you would probably have to go after her as too old. I guess you could do that euphemistically (she’s too washington, need a fresh perspective etc.) but it still would piss a lot of people off.

      Good luck for anyone going through the maze anywhere near game time.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade Aug 28,2017 1:56 pm || Up

        MacArthur Maze is at Bay Bridge footing, the split to 80/880/580/980. The stretch of 880 near Laney isn’t the Maze per se.

        You’re right that the 880 stretch will suck (it’s awful now), but I don’t know how much worse a Laney ballpark would make it. Looking to the Pac Bell example, limiting on-site parking to incentivize mass transit seems to have mitigated a lot of the feared traffic impacts which one can directly attribute to game days.

          Though even without parking you can clog the streets with uber/lyft cars.

          Logan airport was a nightmare to get in and out of by road, and (allegedly) most of the traffic is app cars.

              • dmoas Aug 29,2017 9:16 am || Up

                I predict priority of life will kill the self driving car. Someone out there will have to program who gets priority between it’s passengers and pedestrians. Throw in typical glitches when it comes to technology and it’s tendency towards planned obsolescence. I see it as a pipe dream that’ll come into reality for a while before collapsing. Driver assistance gained from it’s trials is great, but having someone at the wheel being responsible won’t likely go anywhere any time soon. At least not for long.

                • nevermoor nevermoor Aug 29,2017 10:22 am || Up

                  I disagree. Driving is dangerous, and people are bad at it. Robots are probably better than people right now, and improving fast.
                  It’s more about laws/expectations/etc catching up.

                  "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
                • andeux andeux Aug 29,2017 10:59 am || Up

                  In general, no, robots aren’t better drivers than people.
                  By the usual classification:
                  – There are a lot of tasks at levels 1 and 2 that are easier for computers than for humans, and have already been commercialized – things like parallel parking, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection. And these have certainly made driving safer already. But that was the low-hanging fruit.
                  – There are working prototypes at levels 3 and 4. But these usually depend on having good conditions. Most demonstrations are done either on closed test tracks or in a known area where companies have built very detailed high-definition maps beyond what is generally available. And the sensor systems (cameras and/or lidar) don’t necessarily deal well with rain or snow.
                  – There are big open questions about how far you can really go. Level 5 (full autonomy) is hard for the reasons mentioned – you have to solve ALL the problems of weather, unmapped areas, unexpected obstacles. But many people think level 4 (high autonomy) is inherently risky because once humans are mostly disengaged from the driving process it is hard to suddenly take over when something unexpected happens. This is a known issue with autopilot on planes. A good example with cars is the Tesla that plowed into the side of a truck while on autopilot, because the cameras couldn’t distinguish it from sky, and the driver had stopped paying attention.

                  The idea of autonomous driving won’t die out, but it will involve a lot of incremental progress over a couple of decades to catch up to the hype.

                  I don’t know how to square this claim about special tracks with the (I believe uncontroversial) fact that Google has over 3 million miles (with more than half on city streets) all over the western half of the country.

                  I mean, I know they have people in the cars, but not actually doing anything.

                  I completely agree with the autopilot-that-isn’t-perfect concern.

                  Most of those 3 million miles come from driving Mountain View, and a few other cities, over and over again.

                  Sure, is the point that Phoenix and the other cities have been super-mapped already?

                  I don’t know for sure, but I would expect so.

                  And if *you* don’t know, who does?

                  I’d be concerned over the lawsuits. That will kill any high level autonomy. Someone will die or get badly injured as a result of a computerized decision. Who’s going to be at fault? The “Driver” who relied on the system to work as “promised.” The person who developed a “bug” in the software? The person who didn’t “upgrade” the hardware on time? The person who hacked into the system? The person who planted a virus in the software?

                  We have to look at cars in amped up way we do with OS software and existing technologies like smartphones. Even the most closed-off system like Apple’s OS have bugs. Sometimes they’re resolved through re-booting, other times it’s an age issue. It’s one thing to have a phone drop a call or crash a browser. The stakes are a lot higher with a car. Will trillions of lines of code, a single bad line among all of them will have dyer consequences. Suddenly you’re at fault for still running a year old iCar 6 instead of the iCar8?

                  At least when a human is behind the wheel and in total control, as utterly bad as they are sometimes, when an accident happens, we know how to assign blame. In a self driven car, you’re adding 2 or 3 layers of potential responsible parties for every side of an accident.

                  It will obviously have to be the company. Which probably gets a better insurance product/rate than individual drivers currently do.

                  I think that’s actually a pretty easy tweak (especially since I think people mostly won’t own their own self-driving cars, they’ll use hiring services)

          It’s close enough to the maze, that ballpark traffic north (west?) of the ballpark will back into it during commutes. With nothing major there right now, it still backs up near there as it is, it’ll get a lot worse after a ballpark were added. It’s certainly plausible they’ll take efforts to reduce parking and force mass transit. But even the build up of pedestrians in the area could impact traffic there pretty significantly. People still drive through that area for non-game reason and will be waiting for people to cross the streets, etc. which will cause back ups on to the highway. It’s certainly nowhere near as bad as a Howard Terminal park. But the coliseum site is just worlds better and can have a similar restriction of traffic and be built around. Of course, the bright side is they’re legitimately talking about a site at all and seem convinced they can make it work in Oakland, so regardless, there’s that.

    Hey Ostler: I think some editor accidentally published a half-finished column you probably meant to throw away.
