        9,848 was the second sub-10K of the year.

        Royals-A’s is an interesting comparison right now. Think of all those years when the Royals were doormats. They could come up with position players, including the Damon-Beltran-Dye outfield at one point, but they were always so woefully short on pitching. There might be a Kevin Appier or a Zack Greinke but it pretty much ended there. The A’s have featured solid pitching any time they’ve had a nice run of a few years in Oakland, and right now it’s tough to see a clear path to that.

    Will Little, the plate umpire, has 5 ejections this season, and all have been in A’s games. He got Jed! and Melvin in a game in New York, and then 3 Blue Jays all in one inning a couple weeks ago in Toronto.

    Three umpires have 6 ejections each to lead MLB; however, somehow Little recorded 2 more in the WBC, and if you count those 7 is the overall lead.

      Trump was the dog chasing the car. It was all about beating Hillary and being elected, not about actually serving as President.

      He’s mostly an impediment to the GOP implementing the conservative agenda, so there’s no reason for anybody in Congress to support him. The longer he hangs around, the worse this gets.

      I believe we are nearing the end of the Trump administration. He gets frustrated and fed up and resigns, by the end of the year and possibly within a matter of weeks.

      • andeux andeux Aug 16,2017 10:17 am || Up

        A year ago when we all knew that nominating Trump would kill any chance the Republicans had of winning the election, it also looked like he would do longer-term damage to the party by causing a fight between the racist base and the corporate donor class. It looks like that is still happening, to some extent, but I’m not so confident in how it will play out.

        As long as he sees resignation as any kind of admission of defeat, Trump won’t do it. A more normal person could claim health problems, but he won’t even want to do that. Nothing less than a “many people are saying this has been the greatest presidency in history” narrative will do.

        On the congressional side, even those idiots know by now what a disaster he is, but still no one wants to be the one who turned against the base.

        I think the most likely scenario is that nothing happens until Mueller is able to put together enough solid evidence for an indictment.

          Yeah, the idea that he will step down for whatever reason is wishful thinking. For him it’s all about money and ego, and he and his family are going to milk it for all it is worth as long as he can.

      • dmoas Aug 16,2017 10:39 am || Up

        The newest polls over this will be telling. If he maintains a 35% approval, nothing will change. There’s zero chance he quits. As andeux pointed out, it’s not in him to quit. If he maintains his base, he has no reason to worry. The GOP needs them to maintain their power. They can live off 35% because of how skewed the country is and how well they’ve done in gerrymandering and suppressing the vote. They wouldn’t risk rocking the boat by pushing his removal if the very people they need will feel betrayed. If it drops into the 20s, they’re fucked. There won’t be any riding things out. They’d have to risk that betrayal under the hope Pence can push their agenda and stabilize things enough to potentially make it up to them before mid-terms/2020.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Aug 16,2017 1:12 pm || Up

        I still say he’ll never quit unless it’s a condition to staying out of prison. Too much pride, too much desire to fuck over elected Republicans and the two-thirds of the country that hates him, too much utility in the pardon power.

        These Oath Keeper-types are odd. They seem to genuinely disavow the racist shit, yet are happy to lend their guns uber alles beliefs to the nationalists’ cause in the name of “free speech.”

        They also generally comply with local carry laws. In VA they were heavily armed and managed not to shoot anyone. Not sure what the author refers to suggesting concealed carry is ok here.

          I think you have to have a California concealed carry permit even if you are on national park land within the state. But being on NPS land may allow open carry that would otherwise violate SF law?

        • andeux andeux Aug 18,2017 11:40 am || Up

          His previous column gives more details:

          That’s thanks to a 2010 federal firearms law that allows guns in national parks, when applicable under state and local laws, which local officials verified on background.

          Previously, loaded weapons were not allowed in national parks. But a 2010 federal firearms law leaves it up to the states to decide which weapons are legal to carry. In California, those who obtained carry concealed weapon permits within the state can legally possess concealed handguns in national parks.

          and from wikipedia:

          The willingness of issuing authorities in California ranges from No Issue in most urban areas to Shall Issue in rural counties. Additionally, the issuing authority can also impose restrictions on the CCW permit-holder, such as limiting concealed carry only to the purposes listed on the approved CCW permit application. However, concealed carry permits are valid statewide, regardless of where they were issued. This creates a situation where residents in presumptively No Issue locations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco cannot lawfully carry a concealed firearm, but residents from other counties with more permissive CCW issuance policies can lawfully carry within these same jurisdictions.

                You only do it under the hideous California citation manual. Even then, I usually blow it off unless a judge specifically requires it.

                  This. I went to law school outside CA. I didn’t learn it, and it’s way dumber than Bluebook (which, lets be honest, takes some doing).

                  I recognize its necessary for CA appellate work, but otherwise I don’t go near it.

                  I don’t even do it all the time on appeals. It’s basically optional these days. I did have one superior court judge who specifically required it, and I was resentful the whole time.

                  The worst part of it isn’t putting the citations in parens. It’s that when you need a parenthetical to the citation, that goes in brackets inside the parens. What an eyesore.

      That gold mine on the east side of the campus turned into a Superfund site, and the upcoming 2-10 football season isn’t going to help the revenue picture much.

      Jon Wilner has covered this issue extensively. Cal’s athletic department is just too big compared to the most equivalent Pac-12 schools (UCLA and UW). They need to get tough and cut some sports, and if baseball goes to the guillotine again as it was about to a few years ago, it sucks but so be it. We’ll have to play football on Burger King Field at Amazon Prime Stadium too.

      • andeux andeux Aug 17,2017 2:29 pm || Up

        The claim is always that the “revenue sports” (football and mens bb) make money and are subsidizing all those other sports. But that seems to be only true if you don’t count the stadium and training facilities boondoggles as part of the cost of those sports.

        Per the link debt service on the loan for the football stadium is currently $18M/year, and will rise to $26M/year when they start paying off interest. This article says it will eventually rise to $40M/year.

        The same article says

        Since the fiscal year ending June 2013, the revenue generated from ticket sales has dropped dramatically, from more than $14.5 million that year to a bit more than $10.5 million in the fiscal year ending June 2016.

        From the context I think this is football and basketball combined.

        So if you include their facilities, football by itself is in the red by at least $10M/year and rising.

        Meanwhile “cutting from 30 to 14 teams would save between $9 million and $12 million annually.”

        Sounds like they should have just dropped football and saved those oak trees.

                The ACC is one of the conferences that has a tie-in with the bowl game played in the Trop in St. Petersburg. That game, which has previously been known as the “magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl”, the “Beef O’Brady’s Bowl” and the “Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl”, has a shiny new sponsorship for 2017.

        • vignette17 Aug 17,2017 3:25 pm || Up

          Not that it likely takes it into the black, but could there be non-ticket sale revenue for football and basketball? Jersey sales? I admittedly know little about the subject but could there be donors donating specifically to the football team or PAC-12 profit sharing or something? And obviously they might have very profitable years when they do well.

          Plus there’s always the argument that going to football/basketball games is part of the college experience and even if it doesn’t enhance Cal’s brand, it at least would be a big negative if it didn’t exist.

          Maybe to keep it cheaper they could cut the salaries they give the players.

            Maybe they could stop paying more than one head football coach at the same time.

            I don’t know who is chairing the Department of Economics or who is on the roster of professors. I do know that we went 5-7 last year, the coach was Sonny Dykes, the QB was Davis Webb, the new coach is Justin Wilcox and we haven’t won the Big Game in FKing forever. Football is an important way of keeping the alumni connected, and while I don’t make regular contributions, the university (not specifically the athletic department) will receive a check well into six figures if I keel over tomorrow.

          I will be there for Thursday only. I have to get back to teach a class Friday.

          Have you heard whether the Red Sox game is going to happen? My guess is that a bunch of physicists are not going to provide critical mass necessary to organize it. That said the work of organizing would probably fall on John’s assistant Irene and she is a Red Sox fan, so she might make it happen to get herself a ticket.
