      He could at least pretend to regret the actual thing he said rather than just “regret saying anything.” Also, he could say “I regret” rather than “you regret.”

      Billy’s recent record for signing free agents to multiyear deals leaves a lot to be desired.

      2011: Grant Balfour, Brian Fuentes
      2012: Yoenis Cespedes
      2013: Quick, name the Japanese shortstop who never got to the majors:

      Hiroyuki Nakajima

      2014: Scott Kazmir, Eric O’Flaherty
      2015: I don’t need to remind you
      2016: John Axford, Ryan Madson
      2017: Santiago Casilla, Matt Joyce

      Going back further I can think of some Esteban Loaizas who didn’t distinguish themselves in the Green and Gold either.

      • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Aug 5,2017 4:34 pm || Up

        I had entirely forgotten Eric O’Flaherty.

      • colin colin Aug 5,2017 5:08 pm || Up

        Curious how this would look for other GMs, though you would have to somehow adjust based on the amount of money they spent.

        Cespedes and Kazmir were both pretty great. Balfour was probably ok? I was going to bring up Rich Hill, but then I noticed that you specified *multiyear* contracts.

        • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Aug 5,2017 5:30 pm || Up

          I was thinking Bartolo, but of course that was two one-year deals.

                    bWAR  Salary(M$)
          Balfour	  5.7 	 12.25
          Fuentes	 -0.6 	 10
          Cespedes  8.0 	 22
          Nakajima    0     6.5
          Kazmir	  5.0 	  7
          EOF   	 -0.2     7
          Butler	 -0.5 	 30

          Casilla	  0.4     5
          Joyce 	  0.7 	  5

          Those players combined for around 22 WAR and $125 M paid out by the A’s so far, or about $5.7M/WAR. That’s a little cheaper than the going rate for those years. Basically, they’ve done about as well as one should expect, or arguably a bit better, when shopping at the bargain bin.

            Cot’s has Nakajima at $6.5 million total. In the “whatever happened to…” department, he has gone back to Japan, but is not performing at the level he was at prior to signing with the A’s.

            • andeux andeux Aug 5,2017 6:12 pm || Up

              Oops, I meant to fill that in. Will correct.

              Also, even if you exclude Coco’s first two years (6 WAR,$11M) he became a free agent again in 2012, so the rest of his tenure in Oakland (8 WAR, $42.5M) should be included. Again not bad over all, though it would have been much better without the last extension.

    Soaker, you should have gone to Reno tonight. The sounds are up 11-0 in the second. Plus you could offer informed opinions on Yairo Munoz’s ability to handle center field.

    • Soaker Soaker Aug 5,2017 8:10 pm || Up

      It’s a big center field; I saw an Aces player score from 2B on a sacrifice fly when Jaff caught the ball on the run heading toward the wall. OTOH the ballpark is a launching pad to left and right, especially right field with the wind, and I see the Sounds have 4 HR in 2 innings, with one pitcher giving up all 11 runs.

        That, plus Spectra being an arm of the Comcast octopus. Although I’m sure the food truck operators must have to pay a licensing fee to Spectra to be there, so part of your food truck money ends up in Comcast’s pocket anyway.

        The individual lot owners probably each own an undivided 1/35 interest in the private street. I used to check specifically for the tax status on the private street parcel (which nobody else seemed to bother with) and would show the delinquency on the title report in the rare cases when the HOA screwed up in this way, and everybody screamed at me about it: escrow officer, seller’s agent, seller (“You’re saying I haven’t paid my property taxes and that’s not true!!”). I didn’t usually work San Francisco, but if I had ever written a report on one of these 35 properties you wouldn’t be reading that story.

        The University of Nevada (Reno) and UNLV play their football game for the Fremont Cannon, which is a real cannon, and used to be fired.

        The Fremont Cannon was refurbished by the UNLV athletics department at a cost of $1,500 in 2000 following damage after a UNLV victory celebration wherein fans and players attempted to lift the cannon and dropped it. Traditionally, the team possessing the cannon would fire it each time they scored a touchdown during the rivalry game; however, the cannon has not been fired since the restoration due to the damage it received.

        .208/.333/.396 with the usual 23 K in 63 PA so far for the Sounds. I don’t expect him to get a September call-up; he’s not on the 40-man and even if he were, any available PA should go to Renato Nuñez.

        Casilla’s visa problems only delayed his spring training arrival by a few weeks this year. I hope that lasts all season in 2018.

          Serious question: in that situation, would the A’s owe his salary?

          What if Casilla’s visa issues were found to be him at fault like say he was really someone named Jairo Garcia impersonating a Santiago Casilla?

          Would it be covered by insurance?

            I’m assuming if you don’t show up for work, they don’t have to pay you.

              In a normal case, sure. But are baseball players with guaranteed salaries special?

            Major League Rule 15:

            (a) RESTRICTED LIST. If, without permission from a player’s Major or Minor League Club, a player fails, within 10 days of the opening of the player’s Club’s championship season, to report to, or contract with, the player’s Club, the player may be reported by the Club to the Commissioner or the Commissioner’s designee for placement on the “Restricted List.” A player on the Restricted List shall not be eligible to play for any Major or Minor League Club.

            (3) A player on the Restricted, Disqualified or Ineligible List
            (A) shall not be unconditionally released, and
            (B) shall not be entitled to salary while on any such list, nor after reinstatement from any such list, until such date (not exceeding 30 days after reinstatement) as the player is in condition to participate in championship games to the satisfaction of the player’s Club, unless the Commissioner or the Commissioner’s designee approves otherwise in regard to a player on the Restricted or Disqualified Lists.

            Rule 15 isn’t part of the CBA, but it’s incorporated into the CBA by reference in the Discipline section.
