        Leaving aside the money part, I wonder if Beane feels the same. I seem to recall hints that the front office had lost some patience with Cespedes at the time of his exit. I’d love to see him back,

    Listening to the Mets’ radio broadcast, apparently the Cespedes interview with Slusser has stirred up quite the hornet’s nest in New York.

        “On line with the bag”, but Chapman threw it into the ground; it was an impossible bounce to handle.

    Reed has pitched the last two days (16 pitches, 13 pitches), and now Collins wants a five-out save.

    From the Slusser article linked above:

    Céspedes also had a terrific relationship with manager Bob Melvin, another reason he’d like to return one day.

    “I tell my guys here all the time that he’s the best manager for me so far,” Céspedes said. “I don’t think there’s a better manager than Melvin.”

    …except that now Collins is going to try something else with his bullpen.

        • dmoas Jul 25,2017 10:46 am || Up

          Except it’s not a health debate regardless of their attempt to frame it as one. It’s a debate on an incredibly shitty bill that meanders around health care that has been widely panned on all fronts and has zero support outside of Republicans in Congress. They can vote against it and say “we promised better health care and a repeal of ACA, this isn’t it, we can do better” and sell it to their ill informed people better than they can accidentally push this through and have people realize just how bad it is. They have no problem being hypocritical and outright lying to their constituents. And their constituents are damn good at viewing the world with tunnel vision rooting for their side to win. The only way it works is if they don’t outright kill their constituents.

            Collins and Murkowski voted no on the MTP, Heller, Portman, Capito and all the right wingers voted yes. Pence will put it over the top.

            Heller looks like he will be the one to decide whether they actually pass something or not.

              Actually, McCain hasn’t voted yet. Fun as it would be if he rushed off his sick bed to stick the knife in McConnell……he’s not that kind of senator.

              The guy who beat Russ Feingold also hasn’t voted yet. He’s an extremist, but he apparently hates McConnell too. He and McConnell are currently having a serious looking convo on the senate floor in view of the c-span cameras…

              • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Jul 25,2017 11:57 am || Up

                C-Span just switched camera angles so you can see all of the Democrats sitting there watching the turtle and Ron Johnson have their little debate. This is pretty weird.

                  The “slim repeal” gives them one more chance to kick the can down the road. That’s all they want to do. They all know that these bills are shit, but no one (except Collins and Murkowski, I guess) is brave enough to cast the deciding vote to just put an end to it.

                • andeux andeux Jul 26,2017 11:57 am || Up

                  Best as I can tell about the no votes from last night:

                  Collins and Murkowski seem to be solid nos on anything that the rest of the GOP might pass. Can’t completely rule out that they could be bought off with earmarks for their states, but even that seems unlikely at this point.

                  That means all the rest of the Republicans need to be on board for something to pass.

                  Heller is a less solid version of the same thing.
                  Moran, Corker, and Graham are from more conservative states, but sometimes cross party lines, and seem unwilling to just blow shit up.
                  Portman and Capito voted yes, but are also considered moderates, and from states that have expanded Medicare.

                  Cotton, Lee, and Paul (in his own special way) are all pretty far right, so I’m not sure what their deals were. Not draconian enough? Just want to go on the record as contrarians on a bill that wasn’t going to pass anyway? I expect they would fall in line for a bill that made the rest of the party happy, just to say they repealed Obamacare, but at this point it’s not clear what that bill would be.

                  McCain is still in play, at least rhetorically.

                  Capito and Portman were bought off, plain and simple. But the bill they were bought off on is dead, so we’ll see whether they are still in play if the House sends something back.

              If it comes down to Heller as you suggest, I’m not optimistic. Nobody accused him of being a moderate prior to the current debate. If he concludes that he’s screwed politically either way and should “vote his conscience”, I’d expect his “conscience” to lead him toward whatever legislation Team McConnell decides to put forth for the final vote.

              • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy Jul 26,2017 12:10 pm || Up

                Heller seems to have come out this morning in favor of the so-called “skinny repeal” these craven fuckers are planning to pass just to get it to conference. I’m afraid he’s come too far to vote against whatever garbage a conference committee spits out (assuming the House doesn’t pass whatever the Senate sends it).

                I have to think his reelect chances are extremely low at this point. He may just be trying to survive the primary and not lose Wynn and Adelson’s support for his post-senate career plans.

        So that was the “clean repeal” bill they symbolically passed two years ago. This time 7 Rs (Collins, Heller, Capito, Portman, Murkowski, McCain, Lamar(!) Alexander) voted no, as it would have actual consequences now.
