Count me among those who wants Melvin back. I’m far less attached to Nancy Pelosi, who if not to blame is certainly no help in the Dems desperate need to craft an affirmative winning message. Of course, the A’s ain’t been so good at that lately either.
Anyway, Bob’s next win will be #500 in an A’s uniform (needs eight for 1,000 overall). Not sure how one celebrates that milestone, but I’m hoping at the final out Bob runs onto the field and yanks third base from its moorings, then gets pied in the subsequent postgame interview.

36!
I’ll show up on Saturday if they want.
Thanks, and go As.
Can she play one of the corner outfield spots?
At least as well as KD.
better routes than RD
Yeah, the Dems are really covering themselves in shame by… something.
I mean, they appear to be killing health care reform (while signalling they’re happy to help tweak the exchanges), they’re outperforming their district disadvantages by double digits (in both rich and poor GOP counties), and they’re letting the GOP hang itself on non-legislative stuff. Seems pretty good to me.
Seriously, man. And Nancy gets no damn credit for the way she holds her difficult caucus together in opposition with no defections. And the way she, you know, passed the damn ACA in the first place.
The idea that she should be dumped because is a popular target in GOP ads is just silly. If it wasn’t her, it would be Elizabeth Warren. And if not her, some other outspoken women from some other city where Real Amuricans fear to tread.
Yep.
Also a fact I hadn’t heard before: essentially all of the ACA exchange problems are in states with GOP governors.
But exacerbated by the fact that 33 states have GOP governors
Nevada’s 2018 crisis doesn’t appear to have anything to do with state politics. It’s more that the insurance companies want changes to ACA and have decided to use the ~300K residents of the 14 rural NV counties, where they sold about 8K exchange policies in 2017, to make their point.
The situation looks so bleak that the thought has crossed my mind to short-term rent a dumpy apartment in Reno for December-January in order to establish “residency” there. It would be cost-effective to buy an exchange policy as a Washoe County resident vs. buying an off-exchange policy as a Douglas County resident and just write off a couple months of apartment rent; I’m looking at at least a $500/month out-of-pocket premium increase if I have to go off-exchange.
Yeah, my view is that introducing a public option is the real cure for this (but I’d be interested in your observations about whether NV government actually advertised / tried to get that 300k into the exchanges). I also don’t know whether NV expanded medicaid, since getting that population (which is statistically sicker) off the exchanges makes policies more desirable for insurers.
Letting the 8000 of us buy our way into Medicare for 2018 would be a logical Band-Aid as well as a longer-term solution, but fat chance of that happening under the current Congress and President.
I have been satisfied with the public outreach, e.g. local television advertising and articles planted in local newspapers, though I suppose I’m much more conscious of the issue than many. Nevada still has its own state exchange, but since the Xerox software imploded in the first year of the exchanges we have used Healthcare.gov for all the enrollment processing so there’s not any direct communication with “Nevada Health Link”. Sandoval did also go along with the expanded Medicaid, so that isn’t the issue; it’s the exchange plan options that have zeroed out outside of Reno, Las Vegas and Nye County (Pahrump).
What about the uncertainty over whether Cost Sharing Reductions will be funded? For the Ohio counties that don’t have any exchange plans for 2018, it seemed like the possibility of no CSR was the final straw for Anthem BCBS.
Sure, the first reason the insurers are getting cold feet is that Congress and Trump swear up and down that Obamacare is dead, but they are totally paralyzed as to the next steps, and the uncertainty is making a real mess of planning for 2018 and beyond.
If Medicaid expansion survives into 2018, it’s possible that is where I will end up next year. Sandoval vetoed a bill last month that would have put Medicaid alongside private insurance as an exchange option, but the veto came before the insurers announced the pullout from the 14 counties. The private insurers have until mid-September to make final decisions about 2018 plans, but assuming the status quo I could imagine, as a desperation measure, Sandoval calling a special session to re-pass that as to the 300K residents of the 14 counties. I don’t exactly want Medicaid coverage but with a ludicrously expensive plan as the only alternative I’m not going to “avoid it at all cost”.
Preliminary NV Division of Insurance summary of rate filings for 2018 shows that I will have *one* off-exchange plan available to “choose” from, a catastrophic plan offered by Anthem which has a $7150 annual deductible. Anthem has requested an average rate increase of 58.5% for its off-exchange plans, so using that and my age, my approximate premium to purchase this plan will be $820/month, which is $655/month more than I’m paying this year net of the ACA subsidy.
That’s crazy. Hopefully cooler heads prevail wherever they need to. For example, if this bipartisan HC patch idea happens that might change the decision to withdraw.
The 8000 of us got bailed out today, as exchange plans will be available in the rural counties (not with Anthem). Details about rates and network yet to be determined, but chances are my monthly payment will be in the $200-$250 vicinity rather than the $820 I was staring at a month ago.
BUT THE ARROW N HER LOO POINTED RIGHT! IT POINTED RIGHT!
Great news!
I remember reaching the conclusion that Sandoval was doing right by this issue, so I’m glad he found a solution.
And yet, as of a month ago some data suggest Trump would still win the election if it were held now.
I don’t want to dump Pelosi because GOP idiots use her as a symbol. I may not want her out at all. But the Dems have no winning affirmative message nationwide, and haven’t for some time. “We’re not Trump” does nothing for voters, and the persisteny ineffectual attempts to build a positive message and themes need to be laid at someone’s feet. Or in 3.5 years we’ll re-elect the Cheeto, or worse, then wonder why America is so stupid.
Pro-tip: If >50% don’t believe you have solutions, maybe the problem isn’t their stupidity.
I don’t really see her job as winning elections, certainly not presidential elections. I see it as getting legislation passed when in the majority, and keeping her members united against bad legislation when in the minority. She’s really, really good at those things.
I agree with that. My indictment is of DNC leadership writ large. It is desperately important to get some real vision in place and broadcast outward. If they can do that while letting Nancy legislate, great.
I don’t see why Pelosi is responsible for the DNC’s ills. Her job there is basically fundraising, which she does well.
Is it really that she’s good at those things or that the Republicans are just REALLY bad at those things? Because I see it more the latter than the former (specifically towards getting legislation passed). The Dems have a major leadership issue. I wouldn’t pin that on her though, but on the party as a whole. They’re necessarily fractured because that’s just how/who they are. But that means the GOP can unite with a singular message and control the dialog through repetition. It’s embarrassing to hear the GOP talk and people act like it’s normal while the Dems shout into the wind.
I mean, she passed everything possible when she was majority speaker. And has held the party together in opposition of the b.s. from the house ever since.
Hillary just ran a paean to affirmative messages targeted at centrist / right-of-center voters (which all together, got less coverage than her emails). Hell, her national convention could have been for Ike. The special election campaigns have had positive messages, and they dramatically overperformed in heavily-red districts.
I’m not sure what positive national message you want Pelosi (or any house leader) to be crafting, though. I much prefer my house leader to keep the weenie fringe of the party from supporting the affirmatively evil/stupid legislation being voted on these days. If offered a chance to give input, by all means do it. I’d love for Pelosi and Schumer to find space on health care reform, but that can only happen if the GOP is willing to consider productive (rather than destructive) reform. The latter should be, and is being, fought tooth-and-nail.
i’ve been having a tough time pinning this thought into precision, but i don’t think hillary’s messages were targeted-at. more like, they assumed you already agreed with her or were soon to agree with her via osmosis with those who did because it was all so obvious she was right, and thus it was your job to help *her* reach her destiny as you followed along in a parade of support.
even (or in a nutshell) “i’m with her.” that seemed odd at the time and it made a lot of sense, come november, how it didn’t work for a lot of people. meanwhile, trump bullshitted his way in with variations of “i’m with you” that he couldn’t possibly mean.
I’d agree with that. But I’d also say that’s been the Dem’s messaging/style at large. It was less her failure at messaging and more how the established Democrats run things. They figure people are smart to “get it” and that the failures of their opponents’ failures are grossly self-evident as they really are. Which, to any thinking and rational person, it’s true. They get the educated and aware vote easily and handily. But it plays very easily into the GOP messaging towards those who aren’t paying attention and don’t want to put in the effort.
I don’t know. There were pretty explicit “I share your values” messages to the Eisenhower republican types, and a LOT of “I’m with the troops” type appeals.
I agree that “I’m with Her” is a hell of a lot worse than “Yes We Can”
these are all margin issues.
if she could have been a white man asshole racist, she would have had a shot
“We’re not Trump” won’t be enough in a presidential, but “We’re not Trump” plus “We’re not the people trying to repeal Medicaid” might be enough in a midterm. I see midterms, especially in the current climate, as being much more about what people are against than what they’re for.
Braves at Nationals started about the same time as this game. 3 hour rain delay featuring no rain, apparently.
It’s a shame this game wasn’t similarly delayed. The headline could have been “Blackburn Slinging In the Dead of Night”
Groan. Nice.
“Belted by Lowrie! And that baby is… bounces off the wall.”
Poor baby
In truth it short-hopped the wall. Glen may not be watching the same game I am.
Winfield hits his head on the wall and it’s rolling back to 2B!
My favorite was at Fenway: “Fly ball. Left field. Greenwell under it. Oh! It’s Gone!”
First pitch changeups down the middle to Alonso and Lowrie got what they deserved.
Despite the runs, it feels like a missed opportunity (especially with Davis striking out on 3 pitches, 2 or which were balls).
nice to see a modern downtown ballpark mostly empty
Glen thinks Valencia did “a pretty good job” at 3B last year. Was not watching the same games then either.
not a huge fan of mat helmets, but seattles are the worst
Don’t run on Brugman!
lets not tell the mariners that the bases aren’t 87 feet
Blackburn has allowed 2 singles and a double, and faced the minimum.
3 singles, double and a walk through 4. One over minimum
no, mike blowers, it doesn’t work that way
Wait, what?
(Also, shouldn’t the fan get ejected for reaching over to interfere with a live ball?)
nice to finally win a challenge, though
again, as with the 2013 ALDS, the ruling should always go against the designer of the stadium
Too soon
dammit! i really wanted to get cano
marcus and I are on the mend. I can pck up a coffee mug and he can play baseball
seattle field mic picked up alanso’s velcro noise
rght before the home run, zunino threw a ball about 104 ar gavino (?)’s knees
rght before the home run, zunino threw a ball about 104 ar gavino (?)’s knees
SHFTING NEVER WORKS!
Let’s go, Oakland.
i bought that book in 1994, can you still find an old guy at gilman holding up “the list?”
Nice job kid
Columbe’s most unpardonable sin here is bringing Casilla in.
Though if it means he’s unavailable for some future tight game it could be a blessing in disguise.
Yay!
dave sims is not a bright man
sigh vince
The franchise record for innings pitched in a single game without a strikeout is 13 by Fred Heimach in 1925.
The Oakland record is 9 innings, claimed by 5 pitchers – though only Catfish Hunter in 1973 was a game the A’s won (though YTFK would that be relevant to this statistic?)
The most recent with at least 7 innings was Bartolo Colon (with exactly 7) in 2013.
Now he’s added “since Tommy Milone 4/9/12”, which is incorrect, and been called on the irrelevance of the “if A’s win” clause and completely missed the point.
also for the next 2 weeks we will hear “confidence to pitch to contact”
what’s the deal with multi-story constructions catching fire? like the one down the street from my office this morning. but also like the one on adeline/san pab which i believe has caught twice.
arson for kicks? arson for protest? actual, factual higher risk of exposed materials catching?
The San Pablo Ave fires were clearly arson. I have been assuming arson for protest, but since they haven’t happened on any other large projects underway around the area, I further assumed it was a localized protest against that specific site or builder.
If this new one should also be arson I’d have to reassess. It’s certainly not a huge leap to imagine a small cell of black bloc-types deciding to up the tactics in opposition to, well, I guess to capitalism generally. What’s fascinating to me, though, is that old constructs of left and right are less useful on the question of housing development today, when the literally “conservative” position is not to build stuff, and the “liberal” one is to build denser and higher.
Or it could just be a crazy person.
“what’s fascinating to me, though, is that old constructs of left and right are less useful on the question of” [fill in the blank]
That’s true of course, but I find it particularly evident on housing issues, as the classic Slow/No Build liberal dogma crashes hard into the environmental imperative that people need to live within transit range of where they work. While putatively Pro-Build conservatives discover that their property values skyrocket most when supply is restricted. Accommodating the humans that want/need to live in cities is the challenge of our era, and the old paradigms are not sufficient to even talk meaningfully about solving it.

“Induced demand” sounds like total horseshit.
If you create the supply, the demand will follow. Just ask Rick Perry.
Thanks, and go As.
Also, I imagine it’s hella smokey at our favorite nearby brewer’s shop. Also at Drake’s.
No smoke for us, just the FKing choppers hovering overhead from 7am onward.
the morning was still, and the smoke went straight up for a good distance.
Hot take: the new USA soccer uniforms are their best of all time.
FALSE.
1. Centennials
2. Waldo stripes
3. Denim 1994 World Cup
Thanks, and go As.
The centennials were indeed beautiful and I was for keeping them forever. But these manage to be beautiful and distinctively American.
They need to go back to the Centennial crest at an absolute minimum. That was FKing fantastic.
Thanks, and go As.
i approve of those
yeah, it looks better on them than on barcelona.
salty
When I’m in Barcelona next week I’ll tell them “AV said vertical stripes are for loosers.” I’ll also opt not to wear anything emblazoned with USA.
In Barcelona, you must get a cocktail at Dr. Stravinsky, a very new bar we discovered last week. And if you can, get the eggs with baby squid at Quim in the market.
Great tips, thanks!
verticals are fine! practically guarantees second place.
horizontal was the aberration a couple years ago for barcelona after a century vertical.
Nerdiest knife fight ever.
This is delightfully bonkers.
someone explain it to me.
Me first. It’s insane.
Legitimately can’t process that. WTF?
Thanks, and go As.
Crazy but fun. Do you know if this has been going on for a while, with new installments?
No, he just posted the first one a couple of days ago. But he’s done other bizarre stuff along similar lines before.
He also has a charmingly odd twitter feed, where he posts “Welcome to College Football Saturday” every Saturday morning year-round, makes florid descriptions of what “Dabo Swinney and the boys” are up to in “The Swamp” in some game happening only in his imagination, and just generally ridiculous things that make me chuckle.
what was that all about?
Bahamas!
Michael Ynoa appears to have scared them off pitchers.
someone has to alert bed about tonights game
i mean tomorrw
On some Mariners blog somewhere I imagine there’s much dismay about all the GIDPs.
Rajai, you’re a joke dude.
Savvy veteran leadership
That was just awful.
No errors, and yet Manaea got pretty screwed by the defense.
i don’t know what you are talking about, but the first run doesn’t score wth a real left felder
That one, the booted double play ball where Lowrie was lucky to get one out, and Rajai’s brain fart.
Come on, Glen!
Bummer for Lavarnway. I hope the brief MLB paycheck makes up for the non-roster paycheck he’ll get when he ends up accepting an assignment back in Nashville.
he will end up on another roster at some point this year
According to the official Sounds site, Nashville only has one catcher right now (Beau Taylor). Midland has two, but Sean Murphy only just got the promotion from Stockton. The A’s need to find someone ASAP to fill out the numbers if Lavarnway bolts.
Matt McBride is listed as an OF now, but is also a backup catcher (19 games there for Nashville this year, 46 last year plus 16 in Oakland).
MLB minimum is $535K, so that’s like $22K for a week I think. So something, but not “take the summer off” money.
I keep watching this, thinking that the next time I will see how it is physically possible for the ball to do that. Hasn’t happened yet.
I am suspicious that may not have been a legally thrown pitch.
Good start old man
i wont sour on chapman until 2019
Dude can field his position. That makes him exemplary by current standards.
Why the Angels don’t switch back to something like this look permanently is beyond me. The Rangers….not so much.
As always, cheaping out on the batting helmets ruins the whole throwback thing.
yes
The red Angels helmets look so bad tonight.
that s just an awful color
The Angels switched to mostly red and the Rangers to mostly blue around the same time, dunno if it was by mutual agreement.
FKwiz…the players for each of these years.
I suppose 86 is the only really tough one.
I smell a rat.
Indeed.
14 has several candidates
True, now that you mention it, but it was the two I was thinking of.
Actually, 90 sort of has three candidates as well.
Nice route, Rajai
“not enven raja’s speed can catch up to that one”
yeah, vince, its not that every fielding metric and our eyes don’t tell us rajai is terrible out there
Maxwell to Smith during that mound visit must have been “You’re doing fine. Our defense is just like this.”
It’s not you, it’s us.
The defense. It’s contagious.
A semien!
I remember those!
This is going to end up being a two Smith game, isn’t it.
Hey Soaker, at hippie camp today I met the father of legal weed in Nevada. He was a Mitt Romney operative, of all things, until a meeting with the Secret Service convinced him prohibition was stupid.
Hippie camp = Winnarainbow?
Indeed. Wavy even told stories about Neal Cassady and Woodstock.
For now, Douglas County is “dry” as to pot dispensaries. The law has an opt-out by county (same as with legal prostitution) and our right-wing county commissioners don’t want the hippie money at this time. Once they see the first tax revenue figures from elsewhere I expect there will be pressure to grab that money to fix the crumbling roads. But, the logical green cross shop between Harrah’s and Montbleu doesn’t exist just yet.
I’ve been away from the lake as part of my annual “Flee from Fourth of July” policy, but after about 12 hours of driving which is just about to commence, will be home tonight. A nice 5-hour game today for my satellite radio would be great; however, most of the players probably have 5:30 or 6 p.m. flights home from Seattle.
…and only three games all season have been played more quickly than today’s. It suggests that speeding up the games might better be accomplished with the proper incentives rather than dumb rules.
vince ends up slobberng on cano even though its nothis inning
vince ends up slobberng on cano even though its not his inning
We need a DrK-ish term for those posts that end up in the wrong place because they repeat the placement of your last post, regardless of where you intended them to go.
This was originally in reply to FSU’s shout out to Soaker, which originally followed his “I remember those” post in reply to GM.
I’m guessing you deleted the original and re-posted having done whatever your particular flavor of cache-purging magic is, FSU?
Yes, I figured I’d move it since who knows when Soaker might next come by. I copied the text, then hit the “trash” button for the original comment (which produced and error message but still worked), then pasted as a fresh non-reply comment at the bottom.
Dr. FK?
FreePostUpgrade? Or FPU?
Gamel making Rajai look good.
I hereby declare Chris Smith the Good Smith.
I’m surprised to learn that only three Chris Smiths have played in the bigs. And two are active now.
nice work old man
ryan! i need you to pitch well. i need you to be traded
is that an infield hit?
I’m going to be sad if/when they trade Doo.
He’s been a great Athletic, really made this team more fun to root for.
Loved seeing that his charity of choice for some A’s promotion was Swords to Plowshares.
Then, of course, he’ll magically remain healthy for the rest of his career.
Thanks, and go As.
Confirmed. I’m sad.
Rajai totally geared up to fall down at the worst moment.
crap, one is not enough
sigh
Nice win boys!
Chapman’s arm is something else.
Threw a bullet from foul ground and made it look easy.
And then made a smart business decision letting up on the foul ball near the stands.
SIT THE FK DOWN, DANNY
I hear the name “Mitch Haniger” and I picture “Miss Hannigan” from Annie. Every time.
I suppose at some point I will just get used to the New Era flags on the side of the caps. But I doubt I will ever stop finding them tacky as shit for MLB ballplayers.
Not sure if those are floating sideburns or scraggly beard islands or what on Gossett’s cheeks, but yikes.
KD Throw of the Day ™
The Mariners are winning now because Dyson knew that our leftfielder can’t throw the ball to third base.
It’s kind of fun to watch Felix figure out how to be a soft tosser in real time.
More fun than trying to hit old Felix, that’s for sure.
The result is about the same though.
the mariners really blew it on his window
Maybe consider walking Cruz there instead of throwing him a fat hanging curveball. Just a thought.
Don’t run on Maxwell!
Axford is very consistent.
Y’all didn’t miss much.
no baseball for a week. I hate the all star break
A Jamaican guy named Romario just scored in the Gold Cup. Born in the summer of 1994, of course.
I love stuff like that.
Mattocks just blasted one. Jeeze.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah that was nasty.
I know this is a total longshot, but if any FKers have a cheap dependable vehicle that can be spared, a near and dear friend is having some serious life issues and needs something to get to work and transport her kids around.
Spent today driving her to Kaiser for other issues and trying to find a dealer that woud take 0 down on something cheap with no luck.
Thanks, and go As.
Wish I could help, my non-op’d shot clutch sat-for-five-years pickup probably doesn’t qualify.
(sings obnoxious song and in irritating high pitched voice says) If it’s been five years, it’s probably about time to call 1-877-something and get the paperwork for a maximum tax deduction.
It’s not costing me anything to sit in my driveway. I harbor fantasies about reviving it, even have a clutch kit and carb rebuild kit on hand already. I don’t really need another running car, though. Mostly it still has more sentimental value to me (1st new car, epic roadtrips, >200K miles all mine) than the paltry tax gain I’d get via donation.
If you have been able to pull off the “sit in my driveway (for five years)” part of that without any political problems (spouse, neighbors), that’s quite an accomplishment in itself.
Sounds like a perfect 2nd vehicle I wish I had room for!
Thanks, and go As.
Not sure I agree with US’s play with the lead strategy of letting Panama shoot at will from point blank range.
Happy wife’s birthday to you too, FSU.
Happy wife’s birthday to you as well! I had a shot from the mrs ptbnl shotglass just moments ago!
Nadal in an epic five setter right now on ESPN2. Just fought off two match points.
Now 7-7 in the fifth. No fifth-set tie breakers at Wimbledon. I don’t know how Nadal is still in this match.
9-9!
10-10!! This may be the best match I’ve ever seen.
Nadal serving to stay in the match, bothered by reflection off of a panel in the upper deck, chair umpire asks fans in the back to stand up to block the reflection. This is so good.
Nadal goes out 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 13-15 against what must be the greatest athlete in the history of Luxembourg.
I have been using a free Photobucket account for photo uploading and image embedding on sites such as this one for the last 10 years.
I come off a short vacation/offline period and it turns out that they have changed their TOS to prohibit image embedding from the free account. From the new TOS, last revised July 5, 2017:
So let’s see what my options are to convert to a “Plus” account, to continue to allow my photos to be embedded:
So I could pay $99.99/year to post links to photos but not actually embed them, or $399.99/year to embed them. Ummm, no.
I’ll probably go through the free account, save some stuff and then delete the account entirely. Meanwhile, they have replaced my images with a lovely extortion demand, for example this comment (but this applies to numerous threads all over the site). I am infuriated that my picture posts have been destroyed in this way, and I’m sorry for the resulting visual carnage in the threads.
imgur.com is free
Thanks, and go As.
“No longer posting pictures on web sites” is also free, and it’s a policy I have been moving toward for a couple years anyway. I might take some of the Photobucket pics I’ve posted in certain threads on a couple other websites and move them to imgur; yuck that sounds like a pain in the ass though. I fired Yahoo after the latest of their security breach issues so Flickr isn’t an option, and anyway you can see Flickr/Yahoo/Verizon/whoever pulling the same thing Photobucket has done.
As to FK, I’m going to delete all the images I uploaded to the Photobucket account and embedded here. If you loved looking at my 2011 spring training pics, you had 6+ years to do it, but they will gone forever as soon as I get around to it. I have never been one to keep photo albums anyway, and aside from spring training and some Tahoe snow and celebrity golf pics, as I look through those folders most of what I had uploaded there is total junk anyway, not original, copied from someplace else and posted here as part of some forgettable snarky comment, so none of that is worth a further thought.
And now he’s got the fifth!
Nah, mafia guys know when to shut up.
Really, besides everything else, the genuine Russian mobsters involved here must just shake their heads at the utter incompetence of their new American friends. Whatever the Russian word for Omerta is, they ain’t got it.
Something better come of all of this because Stupid should not continually be rewarded the way it’s been for this family for so fucking long without serious repercussions.
Welp, looks like Jr. is going to have to change his story a third time.
He gets this email saying go to this meeting to get info about Clinton the Russian government is collecting to aid your dad’s campaign, and not only does he go to the meeting, he brings Kushner and the campaign manager with him. Amazing.
needed witnesses to tell father what a good by he is!
Random Podcast Rec’s!
Ear Hustle – Really promising new show about life in prison by a couple of San Quentin inmates and a local artist
Doughboys – Two LA comedians (one of whom plays the loser boyfriend of the Australian roommate on “Love”) discuss and review fast food restaurants. Something about the chemistry between the two makes me chortle on the Muni pretty regularly.
First Mondays – Nerdy but not over-serious podcast about the Supreme Court by a couple of former Kennedy and Scalia clerks
thanks. i’ll figure a way to cram some of that into my overflowing playlist somehow.
invisibilia is going off this season. if S2 was a disappointment and you deleted, go back.
30 for 30 started nicely.
mogul. it’s like someone was watching the getdown and went, that’s cute but people should find out how it really happened.
only a game is that sports podcast i was hoping for but now don’t have the time for.
the canon got way better (on average) by shedding that guy. on average because now it’s a different guest who does the contrasting opinion and some aren’t really that great, though still it’s an improvement.

the long game just started and seems like it’s gonna be great. about institutions and how they work.
i was there too. fun interviews with extras / supporting cast in famous movies — half insider trivia, half artistic process stuff.
HOWEVER, if you listen to nothing else this week that makes you pull over on the street because you’re about to fall off your bike from laughing, the segment from 10:30 to 12:00 on the 7/10 pod save america.
Thank you for all of these.
So the Dr said “your EKG wasnt exactly…normal”. This was the push Aces needed to actually get up and move his fat ass around a bit more. And that is finally a way to get me to listen to podcasts. Hopefully they are just engaging enough that I can listen but not so much that i have to hear every word and rewind (thats why I stopped years ago)
wasn’t exactly normal… WTF does that even mean?!
It means go get a follow up at a cardiologist, but yeah that was my basic reply.

the next picture show (an old movie compared to a new movie)
unexplained (ghost lore and such)
you must remember this (if you like classic hollywood, otherwise it’s best forgodden.
if you like true crime:
accused (1 case)
in the dark (1 case)
generation why (different case each week)
stranglers (boston strangler)
inside psycho (inspiration of + the movie)
sword and scale (okay, admittedly creepy)
and, it takes a special temperament to like them as much as i do:
benjamen walker’s theory of everything (best podcast ever)
the brett easton ellis podcast (lots of hollywood director interviews, but goes sideways and he loves bragging about his millenial boyfriend while calling out snowflakes)
Ive actually now bookmarked this and will be starting one of them probably this week.
Also, “good” news…the cardiologist says everything is normal-Im just fat!
I know the HR derby is ridiculous, but holy cats Judge is a freak.
And then Rickey leads off the celeb softball game with a homer. No need to see any more.
The email thread DJTJ tweeted to the world this morning seems so incriminating for not just him but also his brother-in-law and pops that I can barely process it. My head is spinning.
The level of stupidity is outstanding
Taking the meeting was stupid. Taking Paulie and Jared was stupid. Forwarding the email around was stupid. Telling transparent lies about it being a meeting about adoption and then a meeting about Clinton dirt but not knowing it would be Russian govt connected was stupid. Going on Hannity tonight will probably be stupid.
Tweeting the email is probably the least stupid part of all of this, considering that the Times already had it.
At least if the Times had printed it he could claim they were FAKE NEWS. But by tweeting them himself, he’s taken that option away. I know he had lawyers, does he not bother listening to them at all?
it’s great. but i’m still upset that my coinage “reply train” hasn’t taken hold.
even if the NYT is going to release them, just say nothing, “talk to my lawyer.”
its not hard
ASVD
LOL
Uh huh. He really doesn’t know what words mean. Like, any of them. Does he.
There’s no way he, at the very least, isn’t charged, right? Even with the current political situation and all?
I don’t know enough about criminal law to say whether what’s public is enough to make out the elements of violation of any criminal statute. But he’s certainly going to have to turn over the rest of his documents, sit down with Mueller’s team and/or the FBI, and probably testify before the Senate.
I don’t know what federal statutes may be implicated, its all election law which is very specialized.
If you recall, when Gore got anonymous oppo on Bush, he turned it over to the FBI.
I don’t even know if “colluding” is anything. But it certainly looks like there are issues here
There’s the election law angle (foreign donations I guess), there’s the hacking angle (conspiracy to violate CFAA or state equivalents), and there’s straight up public corruption since the lifting of sanctions was being discussed at the same meeting where election help was being offered. That’s just off the top of my head.
And, for Kushner, the flat-out lie on his security clearance docs.
This defense always works.
ha! see? calling it an email chain makes it sound connective, necessary even.
reply train though? that’s like fart waiting for a breeze to clear it out, aka, don’t expect me to go sniffing that shit ’cause i just ain’t gonna.
Thanks Julian
I’m sure his “Why” was “So that we don’t have to hack into your account and take them. We could do it, but it’s a lot of work and I’d prefer it if you just saved me some time.”
Soaker alert – a friend is playing Live at Lakeview this Thursday. His band, the Brothers Prince, is pretty fun.
Hmmmmm
i am so tired, I con’t keep up with all the shit, plus the wretched poolicy
speaking of quantum entanglements… TELE-FUCKING-PORTATION.
So FKing sloppy … the first thing the speaker says is that it ISN’T teleportation, but that’s the headline.
PHOTON-FUCKING-TORPEDO!
i mean, star trek is a thing, right?
For you AV, sure.
I love the Gold Cup, but it is totally cockamamie. French Guiana is not a FIFA nation (being a département of La France), but they and other such island territories are allowed to compete in this competition.
That’s all fine, but they have decided tonight to play Florent Malouda, who is from French Guiana but is also ineligible because he has played 80 matches for France. So they are going to play this game against Honduras knowing that it will be an automatic forfeit, because they apparently do not care in the slightest.
It’s really odd.
Apparently the Gold Cup isn’t actually a FIFA tournament, however CONCACAF decided to follow FIFA eligibility requirements.
Thanks, and go As.
Unfortunate for Yonder that Nelson Cruz and his plate photo op stole the airtime after his hit.
and you served with who now?
Milo Hamilton
Yonder with the hit and the steal!
What is Vince mad at? Linked tweet has been deleted.
Someone saying the guy who sang GBA didn’t do a good job of it
Thanks, and go As.
will in 149
All I know is when Vince hits you with a “bro” and starts talking about Patton, it’s time to get your hands up.
Up and over your ears.
And see who has joined the twitter-thread there!
Oh good, a plan for après golf on Saturday!
Andy Murray is cool.
The confusion only adds to it.
sigh
Having no dog in the hunt as a non-smoker, I’m laughing at the screw-up regarding alcohol distributors’ monopoly on marijuana distribution, the history of which is explained with relative brevity here. The problem goes away on 1/1/2019 absent a court ruling but that’s 18 months too late for a lot of people.
White Sox traded Jose Quintana to the Cubs for Eloy Jimenez (current #5 overall prospect), Dylan Cease (#83) and two other players.
Comparing Quintana and Gray:
Career numbers are very similar. Gray 3.49 ERA (112 ERA+), 3.61 FIP. Quintana 3.51 ERA (115 ERA+), 3.52 FIP.
Neither has been great this year, but Gray (4.00 ERA, 3.58 FIP) has been a little better than Quintana (4.49 ERA, 4.00 FIP).
Quintana has been much more durable – it looks like he hasn’t missed a start in his 5+ year major league career.
Gray has two arb years left after this before becoming a free agent. Quintana would have only 1 arb year left, but signed an extension with reasonably cheap team options for 2019 and 2020.
Those last two factors probably make Quintana more valuable overall. But I would hope the difference would not be too big, and that the A’s wouldn’t trade Gray for a package that didn’t include a real top prospect.
That’s an impressive haul, I would’ve loved a package like that for Gray.
The White Sox rebuild has certainly managed to net a whole bunch of impact prospects in just a short amount of time. And they still have pieces like Abreu and Robertson.
One key difference: When Quintara was traded, Gray was on the market. When Gray is traded, Quintara won’t be on the market. Supply just decreased. I wish that actually made a difference.
Cuts both ways. The Cubs and Jimenez are also off the market now.
Fair.
“Yes, we already traded for Samardzija and Hammel, but now we have a chance to get Jon Lester too!”
Damn it
Gray for Bryant confirmed.
Quick run-through of the McConnell Plan, from the selfish point of view, shows one feature I love, and should have been adopted long ago: allowing premiums for individual plans to be paid with pre-tax money, which corrects a longstanding inequity compared to employer/group plans. Naturally, rather than simply allowing an above-the-line deduction for the premium payment, they require the premium payment to be run through a Health Savings Account, which is fine with me because I have a nice balance in one of those but would discourage or at least inconvenience lower-income people.
They want to allow insurers to charge us geezers up to five times as much as they charge the young uns (vs. 3X under ACA) so that would hit me hard.
Beside the inconvenience of having to use an HSA, it seems like that takes away some of the incentive for employers to offer health plans at all. In the long run, and assuming a robust individual market, that could be a good thing (in the sense that there’s no fundamental reason that health insurance should be tied to employment) but in the current context it could put a lot of employed people in a worse situation.
I can see it being used as a justification by small employers who want to get out from under the burden of providing a group plan.
Bigger picture: forget robust individual markets, there is no better express route to Medicare For All than allowing the model of employer-based health insurance to implode.
“Wait. We have to do the work? And these don’t cover shit? And they’re fucking insanely expensive?”
hsa are such a scam, middle class people park their money for the banks benefit, poor people can’t contribute to them
That’s pretty much true. Based on what I read on investment boards, many people who can afford to carry an HDHP and fund the HSA don’t use the HSA for health expenses at all; they pay those out of the regular taxable account and use the HSA as a de facto deductible IRA (which actually becomes a Roth IRA if used for medical expenses, including Medicare premiums, after age 65). My HSA just has some mutual fund investment options, but some of them have a brokerage option so the investment possibilities are endless.
A correction for our times:
Notice that KatyPerrysBootyHole was also involved in breaking that story.
#JustRedditThings
Father Rasmus? The beard always made me wonder a bit about him.
Trump’s lawyer sounds…..unwell
He does not keep a handle of vodka in his desk, and drink it throughout the day out of his coffee mug.
look, everyone that has done criminal defense has “issues.” there is a reason the SF DA’s office banned prosecutors from going to the bar across the street from 850
At the same time, it absolutely sounds like something you’d expect from an attorney willing to represent that dumbass.
You can’t make this shit up.
What are the odds Trump thinks he’s hired the baseball player?
I’ve decided to bring in a few ringers, professional baseballers. We’ll give them token jobs in the administration and have them play on our softball team. Honus Wagner, Cap Anson, Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown…
Ugly Dickshot would be a good fit.
Could you blame him?
Why is there no baseball today? This is bullshit.
in a just world, we would have the futures game today
I hadn’t noticed this before. When andeux complains, MLB listens!
It’s a fairly safe bet that the A’s will not be one of the 8 of 30 teams selected for the spotlight game.
Cubs
Cardinals
Yankees
Mets
Giants
Dodgers
Red Sox
Mystery Team (let’s say Angels or Nationals)
Take it to the bank.
It looks like it’s only the last 6 years that that day became an off-day for everyone.
Before that it was like a normal Thursday, with about half the teams playing.
Mulder’s 10:10 group will be a good one to follow tomorrow because the three groups ahead will be towing the huge crowds.
9:40: Tony Romo and John Elway
9:50: Steph Curry and Aaron Rodgers
10:00: Justin Timberlake and Jerry Rice
Mulder and Romo are the co-favorites at 3/1.
I don’t really care about awards and such, but how the FK does Michael McKean not get an Emmy nomination?
best lone wolf!
Agreed. He was much more important this season than Jonathan Banks.
Also surprise Fargo didn’t get a best drama nomination. Notable that 4 of the 7 are Hulu or Netflix entries.
Hola from Barcelona, FKers!
(folladores)
“Is there any problem you folladores can’t solve?”
One of my favorite cities, enjoy!
I have heard the Camp Nou tour is fantastic.
Thanks, and go As.
Which Gaudi house is that?
Messi’s
Thanks, and go As.
More gaudy than Gaudi.
I can sing the praises of touring Barcelona beaches at least. If you ever get out here you might never go home.
Good
If you are going to express this bad take, it’s hard to think of a worse example than the one he chose.
Wait, are you saying Sandoval wouldn’t be apt for such a thing?
Personally, I could see a case where if the open market value of the player declined to X% of the contract, a team could buy them out at Y% (something that wouldn’t exactly be cheap in terms of the contract). But only if there were a reverse clause where if a player’s open market value increased Z% they would be eligible to declare themselves a free agent.
I don’t like that some of these guys get insane contracts, suck, and leave more worthy players with fewer suitors as a result. So theoretically, you could require that savings to immediately go back into payroll.
All of which is moot cause there’s zero chance the players agree to anything of the sort on any level. And let’s face it, most guys who go on to suck like the team deserves the punishment because they’re typically fucking obvious. So there’s that.
I’m saying if there was ever a bad contract that a team entered into with eyes open, and thus should not need a special CBA provision to escape, it’s this one. The guy has been “fat and happy” his whole career.
If the new CBA mandated that 100% of any such salary savings be rebated to ticket buyers, then maybe. Why on earth would anyone want to help filthy rich owners save money for themselves which they idiotically choose to waste?
That’s why I suggested the savings be forced back into payroll. I see crippling unproductive contracts as harmful to the productive players who lose out on having that money available them. Under no circumstances should the ownership get any of that.
Unreal
So far…
There were no meetings.
There was a meeting, but it was about adoption.
The meeting was billed to be about Hillary dirt but we didn’t know who it would be with.
We knew this Russian lawyer was there but didn’t know her name.
We took the meeting knowing the Russian lawyer was to hand us info from the Russian government.
There was also a former Russian intelligence officer at the meeting who is suspected of masterminding hacking operations.
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if the other people at the meeting were Assange and Trump Sr.
ik,r?
I’m casting my mind back to legal ethics class and the concept of a “noisy withdrawal.”
Lily and I just made a 5G keg of ginger beer for the kids at a friend’s party, and it turns out to be an excellent shandy mixer with a blonde ale when you want something super low alcohol. Maybe I’ll bring some to the tailgate too.
