    Barrett is young and may not be ready yet, but this might be the beginning of the A’s starting to get good again.

    This game is an excellent demonstration of why I’ve hoped and expected the second half of this season to be so much more interesting than the first half, regardless of won-loss record which probably won’t improve much.

      Of Healy, Barretto, Chapman, Pinder, Olson, Brugman, some will end up not amounting to much, but when was the last time the A’s has so many young hitters with a chance of being decent?

        The 1986 A’s were very similar to this year’s team. They started the season with a lot of crappy veterans plus Jose Canseco, and as the season went on or by the following offseason the crap had been cleared out to make room for McGwire and Steinbach. There’s also some Rob Nelson and Bill Bathe mixed in among the 25-and-under talent.

        Few teams have been so chock-full of 25-and-under talent as the 1967 Kansas City A’s, and even there Webster, Donaldson and Gosger were players who hung around for a few years in the majors but mostly wound up filling expansion rosters a couple years later.

          Bruce Bochte Biotches! For some reason that sticks with me. Also Dusty Baker!

    Vince blew out some speakers on the Barreto HR call.

    The A’s defense still leaves something to be desired.

    This Ostler column is extremely annoying.

    I’d tell you the rookies’ names, but that might make them popular, and you know what happens to popular A’s. They drive up to the players’ parking lot and the guy with the chipboard says, “Hmm. Sorry, your name’s not on my list, Mr. Vogt.”

    Ugh. I understand that the writers like Vogt a lot. I like him a lot too. But this is just stupid as hell.

        Pat Burrell, Cody Ross and Aubrey Huff were among the veterans who brought an edge to the 2010 team.

      I doubt Ostler has written anything original for the last 15 years. He just dusts off the old column, changes a few names, and bingo!

    Slusser:

    Among the clubs with multiple executives and scouts at Gray’s start Sunday: the Cubs, the Blue Jays, the Mariners and the Braves, while the Red Sox had one scout there. Some non-contenders looking ahead to next year have interest in Gray because he has two more years of team control.

    Some of the teams in attendance also are scouting infielder Jed Lowrie, who is all but assured to be dealt before the July 31 deadline; Boston, Lowrie’s first big-league team, is a club that is likely to have interest.

    • colin Jun 26,2017 3:06 pm || Up

      Boston needs a 3B. Can Lowrie still play that position?

      • dmoas Jun 26,2017 3:55 pm || Up

        Can he really play *any* position?

        • MikeV Jun 27,2017 8:21 am || Up

          No, literally the base.

          Yeah, I don’t know what the metrics say, but my sense is that Lowrie has been at least adequate, if not very range-y.

        I’ve found it pretty boring so far. Maybe it will start being interesting once we have a few years of data.
