    I guess the weeknight start times are no longer sponsored by 7-11.

    I have to think Khris becomes a better hitter if he doesn’t have to spend the defensive half innings standing in left field worrying about the limp noodle hanging off his shoulder. This is four DH starts in a row; he had one stretch of six straight last year. Whether it’s Melvin, Beaneforst or both, I suspect there’s been a decision to minimize his outfield time.

      That play where he had to use the cutoff man to get the ball from shallow right to second base was embarrassing to the whole franchise. There is only so much that Melvin or whoever makes these calls can take.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Jun 23,2017 6:16 pm || Up

        Also less OF playing time can only help his market value.

      Khris is back in left field for Saturday’s game, with Joyce at DH, so “minimize” is not “eliminate”.

        Oh yes, the much discussed Lastings Milledge. When you put Lastings Milledge and fellow five-tooler Terrence Long side by side, their rate stats are virtually identical, but Long’s career was almost exactly twice as long as Milledge’s.

        After not fielding a ball cleanly behind second base, he left the ball lying there and went for a walk in the outfield. The batter decided to try for second base. Lowrie finally got Pinder’s attention, and Pinder flipped to Lowrie for the tag-out (too-close play, upheld on replay).

            Somewhat related, and 5Aces will love this: The Sacramento River Cats, who have finished first or second in the PCL in average attendance every year as far back as the online records go (2005), are currently running in fourth place. The league leader is your Nashville Sounds, at 8823 per game. Round Rock (which is the other franchise that usually finishes first/second) and El Paso are ahead of Sacramento, which is at 7574 per game. I don’t think won-loss record affects minor league attendance nearly as much as it can in the major leagues, but the River Cats certainly aren’t helped by their current 29-45 record, which is third-worst in the 16-team league.

            The upper part of the organization is awfully thin as to position players right now. Nashville and Midland each have only 10 position players on their active rosters as of today. Semien, Pinder, Chapman and Marincov are on the DLs. It depends on who they acquire in the July trades, but Rosales’ ability to suck at so many positions makes him pretty valuable to finish out the season, so I think he’s around right through October 1. This, along with nobody else who can play CF other than Brugman on the major league team, is why Rajai, just a late-inning defensive replacement and pinch-runner now, will remain on the roster for the foreseeable future.

              Also depends on injuries. In the unlikely event that everyone gets healthy at the same time, probably one of Rajai and Rosales would get squeezed off the roster.
