      He’s started 8 of the last 13 games, which is not bad, but still about five too few.

        Looking at the #1 spot in the batting order, 9 of the 15 AL teams have OBP from that spot between .369 and .336. The other six are:

        Detroit .324
        Baltimore .319
        Toronto .303
        Chicago .287
        Oakland .238

          Detroit .312
          Baltimore .302

        There are plenty of people who think Beane is one of the more overrated figures in baseball the last 20 years. There’s some evidence on this team for more strikeouts being worth the tradeoff for more power for some players. Alonso hasn’t struck out this much since his rookie year with the Reds, which was also his previous best offensive season. Healy’s breakout last year coincided with more strikeouts, as has Pinder’s this year.

      But seriously, folks...
      • Soaker Soaker Jun 1,2017 8:55 pm || Up

        Regardless of how anyone views Bob’s share of the blame here, it’s very rare for a manager to lose 90 games in three straight seasons and then be invited back to start the fourth season with that team.

        Connie Mack did it three times, once having a streak of nine straight 90-loss seasons (1935-1943). He owned the team, though.

        In recent years, excluding the first manager of an expansion team, there have been four who came back for a fourth season:
        1. Ron Gardenhire lost 90+ with the Minnesota Twins for four straight years (2011-2014).
        2. Tom Kelly lost 90+ with the Minnesota Twins for four straight years (1997-2000).
        3. Felipe Alou lost 90+ with the Montreal Expos for three straight years (1998-2000).
        4. Joe Torre lost 90+ with the New York Mets for three straight years (1978-1980).

        None of these four managers lasted more than one full season after the final season of their 90+ loss streak.

        It has happened four times with the first manager of an expansion team (hello, Casey Stengel) and twice with the always-pathetic St. Louis Browns.

        • dmoas Jun 2,2017 8:02 am || Up

          In this case, it’s entirely on Beane/Forst. If Melvin goes, it needs to be because they replaced the two of them for a new GM who wants to bring their own guy in. I don’t see any reason to place the 90 loss on Melvin. You can’t get blood from a stone and all that.

          • dmoas Jun 2,2017 4:11 pm || Up

            I think it’s less that they’re too powerful and more that structurally Congress is too big with too many ideological differences to overcome that they can’t pass laws anymore. Add in that structurally the Constitution gives way way way too much power to small states (especially in the Senate) that the voice of the people know longer matters. But then I’m a peaceful successionist who wants to see the U.S. split up into 4 or 5 smaller nations since we’ve become too big, too spread, and too partisan to meet the people’s needs.

        An injunction I guess? The combination of a prior restraint on speech and a violation of the separation of powers is sure to be a winner. Not to mention that Trump probably waived any privilege when he talked about what he told Comey on the FKing NBC Evening News.

        More likely they would try to get the Senate to cancel the hearing, but that seems pretty unlikely at this point.
