John Wayne Was a Ranger 178

MDC had it right.

In fact, John Wayne played a Texas Ranger in the 1961 film The Comancheros, teaming with his captured fugitive to fight a criminal gang running whiskey and guns to the Comanches. John Wayne kills the gang AND the Comanches, natch, frees the fugitive to run off with the chief’s daughter, and rides off into the sunset.

Fuck Elvis too.

Now I need to find a new fucking sandwich place.

LOL Giants, so fucked they’re getting shock therapy. No, really.

    My favorite sandwiches around here are from the E-Z Stop deli. Not fancy at all, but they roast and cut up their own turkey (and chicken), so those ones aren’t just sliced deli meat.
    Sandwich Zone (next to Arinell’s) is OK too.

    As the article points out, some generic predictions of Inflation have been confirmed* by CMB measurements, and the chase is on to use the polarization of the CMB to measure the energy at which it happened (sorry Colin!)

    However there is still a huge problem that you can always invent an Inflationary model that fits the observations, but that is really a problem of fundamental physics (we know the standard model is wrong, we just don’t have anything better yet) rather than cosmology.

    *The article is wrong to cite flatness though, since that was one of the known problems Inflation was invented to solve.

      Without knowing much about them, I think the slow contraction models proposed by Steinhardt/Ijjas/Loeb are interesting and worth exploring. The last time I heard a talk from them, I don’t recall hearing a lot about observable consequences of those models either — they don’t even have primordial gravitational waves because the contraction is too slow.

    “What it’s been my last couple of starts is I’m able to get to two strikes quite a bit, I just haven’t been able to put people away,” Gray said.

    Seems to me this has been a problem longer than his last couple starts. Often last year too, he wouldn’t get missed swings or bad contact earlier, few chases on curves especially, so he gets to two strikes and has to keep locating the fastball just right, or he gets hit.

        • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy May 14,2017 4:36 pm || Up

          It wasn’t that dirty as these things go. But it’s considered dangerous to slide your feet underneath the spot where a jump shooter is going to land. Pachulia did that to Leonard, who had just re injured his ankle.

          The player most famous for doing that was former Spur Bruce Bowen. I believe he knocked Kobe Bryant out of a playoff series that way, and it was far more obviously intentional.

        • mikeA May 15,2017 10:36 am || Up

          It’s definitely a dirty play, but no way he was intentionally trying to hurt him.

          • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy May 15,2017 10:38 am || Up

            Correct. The only reason we’re even talking about it is that his ankle was already hurt. He was probably going down there no matter how he landed.

            • FreeSeatUpgrade FreeSeatUpgrade May 15,2017 1:22 pm || Up

              Yeah, Kawhi wad pretty clearly already in bad shape. Probably had a pain killer right before tip off which started to wear off by end of 1st quarter. Before the Zaza play there was another one where Kawhi rolled the ankle on bench teammate and looked to be in agony. Obv not W’ s fault. And surely Pop knows this.

                Pop is running a pretty impressive psychological game right now with his team the plucky underdog fighting against all odds. Pretty funny coming from the Spurs.

                He also specifically told reporters to ask David West whether Pachulia is dirty, based on an incident in last year’s playoffs when west was on the Spurs and Zaza on the Mavericks. Pretty crafty attempt to put more pressure on the Warriors (and of course the refs).

    I was just looking at the Ballpark Pass offer …

    Is it other people’s understanding that the pass guarantees access to the stadium but not a seat? Obviously there’s almost certainly going to be a seat available, but am I right that you won’t know where until a couple of hours before game time and that in the absurdly unlikely event of a complete sell-out you’d be left seatless?

    Although the pass is nominally tied to an individual, that seems to be enforced through an mlb ballpark app account. What would happen if some ragtag collection of individual fans who trusted each other set up a dummy account that they all shared access to (in the name of Freida Kraut, for example), bought a couple of passes, and whoever could use the tickets for a particular game did so? Does the app limit the number of devices it can be accessed on?

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy May 15,2017 10:16 am || Up

      That was my understanding as well. You get a seat “if available.”

      I believe the ballpark app is tied to your device, possibly through your phone number, so it’s impossible to share (without handing off the phone of course).

    Holy crap.

    President Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in a White House meeting last week, according to current and former U.S. officials, who said that Trump’s disclosures jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State.

    • Glorious Mundy Glorious Mundy May 15,2017 2:17 pm || Up

      “This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”

      In his meeting with Lavrov, Trump seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat. “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” Trump said, according to an official with knowledge of the exchange.

      Trump went on to discuss aspects of the threat that the United States only learned through the espionage capabilities of a key partner. He did not reveal the specific intelligence gathering method, but described how the Islamic State was pursuing elements of a specific plot and how much harm such an attack could cause under varying circumstances. Most alarmingly, officials said, Trump revealed the city in the Islamic State’s territory where the U.S. intelligence partner detected the threat.

      Appreciate the sentiment, Bob, but I think we both know that’s not going to happen until…ya know.

      “The White House has got to do something soon to bring itself under control and in order,” Senator Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee and the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters, adding, “It’s got to happen.”

      “Obviously they’re in a downward spiral right now and they’ve got to figure out a way to come to grips with all that’s happening,” Mr. Corker said.

      • dmoas May 15,2017 4:07 pm || Up

        “It’s got to happen.” That’s where he’s got it wrong. It doesn’t actually have to happen. Not so long as he and his party sit on their asses and not force the issue. Until that time, it quite literally does NOT have to happen.

          They seem to be inching along the scale to where some of them are now at least publicly acknowledging that there is a problem. But until they come to grips with the fact that they are the only people in the world who can do anything about it, it’s meaningless.
