Scioscia’s bullpen is a toxic dump. Beat the bullpen once and split the other two is a good formula for a road series win.
Same Bat Time of 7 p.m., same Bat Channel for all three.
Tuesday: Hahn vs. JC Ramirez
Wednesday: Manaea vs. Matt Shoemaker
Thursday: Graveman vs. Ricky Nolasco
We have to call LeMarre “Hedley,” right?
I keep hearing “Ooh la la! LaMARRE!”
That”s HEADLY!
kinkyyyy.. sign here.
NOW GO DO
THAT VOODOO
THAT YOU DO
SOOOOOOO WELL
Haven’t seen the Humboldt fairy ads for a while on the streaming app. I liked them so much better than the one with the guys stealing the suede couch and the truck dealer ad where they keep bleeping the word “ass.”
I will say this about Rosales’ defensive play at shortstop: Once he gets the ball in the glove I have no doubt about a strong and accurate throw. I’ve never quite gotten over Semien’s throwing issues.
Scribbles only gave up the 4th most runs of the Mariner’s staff today.
vince tried to poetically say that ploffe and rod carew were both on the twins but the way he said it implied that ploffe was one of the greatest twin of all time
30 pitches throw threet. good work guys
49 throw fourf.
Looks like we will get to see Hedy.
HEADLY!
Dang, Rajai, blink once in awhile.
Did Ray just say that he’s never seen anyone better than Alonso at picking balls (sic) at first?
The A’s are hitting the ball hard all over the place while the slegnA aren’t at all. Naturally this means we’ll lose 2-0.
2-1, I should’ve been more optimistic.
Fk you, Gods of BABIP.
If there is a worse “tradition” than the flashing cell phones throughout a stadium, I’d like to know it.
This definitely looks like the “beat the Angels bullpen” night of the three.
I just remembered they don’t have Bedrosian. We will eventually get to a bad pitcher.
But will we eventually get to a good A’s hitter?
heh
Excellent, just had to pull one off the bench.
Either that or Josh Phegley.
This has to be the best WPA start of Hahn’s career, right?
Current best is 0.414 from a complete game shutout of the Tigers in 2015.
.527 tonight using fangraphs version
And I assume that will be all for him, 101 pitches and looking a little tired in the 8th.
Hahn works all night for his .527 and Phegley gets .348 in one pitch.
Similarly, Casilla…
I’m confident Casilla’s good for all -.815
In the end, Madsen outsucked Casilla by WPA, -0.372 to -0.315
Assuming Hahn doesn’t come out for the 9th, 0.527 is the new benchmark.
Vogt’s inability to frame the low strike is seriously annoying.
I’ve been staring at this empty comment box for like an hour waiting for the A’s to give me something to talk about.
Pitching and defense something something.
i turned off the radio, i assume ken is calling this a good tight game
We should score now.
Lowry’s a great candidate for a guess homer down the RF line.
Guess better, Jed.
Is this the first donning of the Golden Sombrero this year? I know Plouffe has been close a couple times but didn’t quite get there.
Phuck yeah!
PHegley!
not enough
The 4-pitch walk to Maybin was a cunning way of having Trout lead off the bottom of the 10th.
Well this will test your confidence in Casilla.
nope. i expected that
I was certain of it.
SantiagNo!
if your last name is pounders, dont give your boy a girls name
Headly knew her!
The Angels may be sending a couple guys to the DL after aspirating bottles of resin powder in that celebration. Fuck em.
Judging by his numbers Calhoun hasn’t gotten a hit against anyone but the A’s all season.
you spelled “his career” wrong
Also “Cameron Maybin”
elcroata, your thoughts on Lithuanian baseball?
These ESPN layoffs are a bloodbath. They canned a lot of notable people.
OH NO!
Dallas Braden too, apparently.
Slusser retweets:
The issue isn’t so much sports fans watching content without paying for it; it’s that non-sports fans have heretofore been forced to pay a lot of money for content they aren’t interested in, and now with “skinny bundles” there are legitimate ways around that.
I need the opposite, a way to view sports channels **only** without having to buy Fox News, Nickelodeon and Travel Channel.
This is the closest thing I’ve seen to a sports-only bundle, but it doesn’t have ESPN.
It’s funny. Now that I think about it, I watch almost no ESPN these days. Their non-game programming is mostly unwatchable. The only games I care about are the NBA, but even there I will only tune in if it’s a huge game. Their presentation just isn’t good enough to bring me in on a mediocre game, unlike TNT. And I haven’t watched a Sunday Night game not involving the A’s for years. I guess the network is essential for college football and basketball heads, but otherwise it’s become just another channel.
I watch a lot of college football on ESPN, particularly after baseball ends, as they have most of the top Pac-12 games and just about every bowl game including the playoff; otherwise you are right, I haven’t watched “SportsCenter” or “Baseball Tonight” in 20 years and don’t watch ESPN at all for 8 months a year.
I sometimes watch MNF and Sunday Night Baseball, but not either one religiously.
Per my comment below, while I’m not sure that the whole cable industry is in as much trouble as some make out, ESPN in particular may have a problem. Their carriage fees are way higher than any other station (as of a few years ago, they were 4 times the next most expensive channel) and with the rise of competing sports channels along with online options, they can’t really justify that any more.
I’ve long had a habit of putting sports center on in hotel rooms on business trips in the morning, mostly because I can. Recently, though, it’s been such utter nonsense (and usually bobblehead opinion rather than “here’s what happened yesterday”). ESPN’s breaking my habit for me.
Maybe with few opinions to offer now they go back to reporting what happened.
Have you checked out Fubo? Sounds like that’s the space they’re trying to capture.
Youtube TV seems to have agreements with the four networks and all their sports-related cable channels for that same price. Fubo looks like it has Comcast’s NBC Universal and Fox but not Disney (ESPN) or CBS. I’m in the #106 television market in the country, so it could be a while before Youtube TV shows up here, but the promised product is encouraging.
Hulu now has a product like this as well
That is the roadblock for me for the time being, no local stations. I can theoretically get the CBS station on an antenna (haven’t tried it) but out of luck on the others.
interesting. still dont like it. its better. if you could get weird stuff and viacom, sure
I’m not convinced bundling (or unbundling) makes that much difference. Even if you only watch 25% of the channels in your package, that doesn’t mean that you should expect to get them a la carte for 25% of the price. You are subsidizing someone else’s Travel Channel, but they are subsidizing your sports. I grumble about the price of cable too, but then I keep paying it, so…
You are right about the math, but I am saying I am willing to get rid of 180 of my 200 channels and realize I will cut my bill by only ~33%, as long as I get to pick the 20 specific channels. Which I then supplement by buying a product like MLB.tv separately. It won’t add up to that much savings overall, but that’s because my only real interest is the most expensive programming out there which is sports rights. And meanwhile Granny who only watches Game Show Network and Food Channel saves a shitload of money because she doesn’t have to chip in for ESPN’s NFL rights payments.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see your bill actually go up rather than go down. It’s basically socialize television in that way. The reliance on people who have no interest in watching it paying into it is crucial to keeping the cost down. Granted, it’ll depend a lot on which 20 channels you have interest in, but especially if they are sports related channels, it’s far more likely to be the case.
This discussion could directly affect the A’s, who are in the 9th year of a deal that gives the team an opt-out after the 15th year. There was some scoffing a couple years ago when Ballmer gave thought to taking the Clippers off cable/satellite entirely and going over the top, but this landscape is changing fast. You want to watch the A’s, buy an a la carte “season ticket” for $150, $200, whatever, or pay per view for $8/game, and watch on the Internet.
It’s going to come to that sooner or later. I just hope the A’s start before that bubble bursts and they’re relying on money that RSNs can’t cover.
In light of recent local events, I was curious whether many 80s-era racist skinheads were active today. I don’t have an answer, but I found this, the (slim) foundation of my punk credibility.

Same as it ever was.
This is fucking disgusting
If 60 million people were to flood their lines with calls every day, it would neuter it.

C- for effort, undermined by everything else surrounding it.
Thank you, gods of BABIP.
Damn it.
As Vince points out, Manaea fastball 89-90 in the first inning after 93-94 last Friday.
He does not look right.
Yeah, the Angels have figured out that he’s throwing BP.
And whatever it is, he’s done after 2 innings.
It took the A’s two innings and 35 pitches to realize something Vince fking Controneo noticed after one pitch.
This is a guy who had a scary forearm strain last year and injury issues his entire career.
Someone should point out that 30 seconds is more than enough time to tell if it’s a truly bad call. They’re far less concerned about maybes. That and add a second pair of eyes on the screens if you really want to look at more in less time.
With the Monday off day on Manaea’s fifth day, a 10-day DL is the obvious way to get Graveman on the roster. They would need a start from Valdez sometime next week. Problem is, sudden velocity drops usually correlate to appointments with Dr. Andrews, not just skipping one start.
“Shoulder tightness” maybe isn’t a Dr. Andrews issue, but as noted above this was obvious from the very start and Melvin and Young let him throw two innings.
Dallas Braden is part of the ESPN bloodbath so I’d bet we’ll see him more on NBCS-CA. Fosse’s lifetime appointment is that much less secure.
There’s something very annoying about that dugout seating the Angels have. I want to punch all of the faces I see there.
Challenge that for chrissakes.
Indeed.
Miss .500 is packing her bags and with 7 games after this one on the road trip, I’m really really not liking my chances of seeing her much more this year.
(door slams, suitcase goes clunk clunk clunk down stairs)
She may just stay with the Angels when the A’s leave town.

Now two extra bases taken against A’s outfielders caught flatfooted.
How appropriate that American Standard is aboard as an A’s television sponsor.
American Standard Coliseum. Make it happen!
Last night was an excellent game, until the denouement. This one was fairly close most of the way but has stunk like a nasty turd from the start.
Holy shit the dude is a FKing freak.
Thanks, and go As.
That seems… quick.
Makes Adrian Peterson’s “one offseason to recover from a torn ACL” seem like forever.
Thanks, and go As.
this week in podcasts:
boy, the canon really picked a good week to put stop making sense up on a versus episode, against the prince movie no less.
i’ve found a counter to the notion that language is “literally” eroded by the less educated. it’s “obviously,” the knowledge-sounding word thrown in by all sorts of college grads to segue a wide range of ideas outside its specific meaning. (it does not mean “as we’ve come to learn.” or, “if you think about it you wouldn’t be surprised.” you could even say it means the oposite of those.)
but really, i’ve come to ask if anybody wants to go to the containers podcast closing party tonight. my date flaked and i hate wasting the other ticket. 7pm, 13th street oakland. HMU.
Chris Bassitt gets a rehab start Sat for Stockton, on road vs SJ Giants.
Haven’t been around as much recently. What do people think of the food trucks? Any particular favorites?
Anybody listen to the podcast S-Town by the same people who did Serial?
Saw ec got a shout out on 538.
Wow, very cool ec.
Yeah not only did that person remember a nearly 7 year old piece, but they also went through the trouble of finding it through wayback machine since it was deleted on the original site it was posted on.
Now it links to Wooden Feather, as it should.
I did listen to S-Town on a drive to Nashville and back. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but my wife is a devotee of This American Life and Serial. I thought it dragged on at times, but also had some very touching moments. But I’m also sympathetic to the point of view that it is a bit sketchy to air all these personal details of a deceased person, even if the various characters did sign the appropriate legal releases at some point.
Since, it’s real life and not a murder mystery it’s understandable, but I felt like it went way downhill after about episode 4.
I loved Serial and I’ve started listening to This American Life on any drive I do longer than an hour. The episode about the school district in upstate NY and the episode about the car dealership have become conversation starters for me with people who haven’t heard them. Absolutely fascinating stuff.
well, it’s presented as a mystery but it turns into a portrait.
“rosebud.”
i wouldn’t say real life though.
in the dark and accused are both pretty good, also in the deep dive murder mystery vein.
oh, and finding richard simmons or whatever it’s called, that was a real disappointment. i did end up with a new appreciation for simmons. but there’s a great encapsulation of the podcast in, i believe, the rant wheel at the end of the first lovett or leave it epp.
Thanks for informing me of “Crimetown” by the way. I finally started it and I love it.
yeah, it’s top notch.
The theme song rules, by the way.
ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-yaaaaaaa!
What’s it about?
It’s about crime and corruption in Providence, RI, told largely through the lens of the life and times of former mayor/prosecutor/convict Buddy Cianci. That’s what this season is about anyway. They plan to focus on a different American city each season.
The food trucks and the plaza area are terrific on a nice day – it really makes a crowd of 15-20K feel big and festive. I went out there one coolish wettish night in the middle of a game where there were maybe 7K, and it felt a bit sad, but no worse than the concourses on a similar night. I’ve had great stuff from Smoke’s Poutiniere, Rice Rockit, Lexie’s Frozen Custard (maple bacon waffle sundae), and whichever place it is that has the loaded tater tots.
I didn’t get anything from this truck, but I enjoyed looking at the outside of it.
They even have a “Find FK” link, but it doesn’t mention the move to .net…
I believe their truck used to have a small slogan on it that read something like “ready to get FKed?”
Are there good vegetarian/vegan options in the food trucks?
It is a different lineup each game. There was a veg/vegan filipino truck at the game we went to. Their lumpia was good.
I assume the NFL is holding the draft in Philadelphia just so that Eagles fans will act like animals on TV?
I’d have preferred Cleveland for the pathos.
FK has a glitch. The comment GM made above this one now shows as a “pending comment” awaiting approval. I’ll leave it that way if nm wants to diagnose.
Oh damn. That must have been what happened. My machine glitched and I hit one of the buttons there and I must have clicked “unapprove”
You bastard
Seems like a great haul for SF to not have to pick a UNC QB, and get the guy they wanted anyway.
Would be kind of funny if ESPN calls Mel Kiper Jr. the minute the draft ends and tells him “uh, forgot to tell you…you’re laid off too.”
I know absolutely nothing about any of these football players but I’m going to say on general common sense it is a bad idea to trade up for a UNC quarterback.
Crosby and Ovechkin still the two best players, or is that out of date?
Crosby looks pretty good tonight fwiw.
Maybe Kane of Chicago also.
And Conor McDavid of Edmonton is the new wunderkind.
Barreto hit his fourth homer and walked twice, now batting .351 with an OPS around .980.
Sigh
Graveman was hitting his spots ok. Unfortunately they were also Trout Pujols and Cron’s spots.

You really can’t make this shit up.
Nice khatch
Getting a ball to fall between Trout and Calhoun feels like a minor miracle.
Oh Cliffy
+1
Holy crap, what a play!
I have never seen that one before. FKing awesome.
Incredible
Not sure I have ever seen a 1-1 double play. Hope he is ok.
1st and 3rd, nobody out becomes runner oin 1st with 2 outs. Made possible by the contact play. Thanks Scioscia!
Nice AB there
Cliffy’s slide was interesting.
We need Barreto god dammit.
If there’s any silver lining to be found in this series, it would be that the A’s have given Scioscia false confidence in his crappy bullpen.
This is the worst collection of position players in the Beane era.
Brutal series for Healy.
1/14, 7 K
-.21, -.14, -.22 WPA (his three worst of the year)
Looking up the flight arrival times:
A’s: 4:07 a.m. at Houston Hobby.
Angels: 4:29 a.m. at DFW.
The Angels won their game though.
The way the Times and its “public editor” handled this is shitty.
