I find Mariners series to be especially tedious for some reason. To bad my next business trip is not until next Monday – otherwise, I could’ve missed nearly the whole thing.
Anyway, four games with the M’s. Whoopee.

I have no idea who César Valdéz is
The NBC Sports app is proving essential for these two screen game nights. A’s and Sharks, and who knows, maybe this Montreal-NYR Game 5 goes 4 OTs.
Or maybe just the A’s and Sharks. Also FK the Rangers.
#1 seed Chicago is about to not just lose, but get swept by the #8 seed Nashville Predators.
They made a highlight on their way out though.
That was awesome.
Paxton isn’t going to no-hit the A’s. Thanks Jed!
gotta be ready to anticipate
thanks vince
Anticipating anticipation is a hallmark of consistency.
Valdez is barely out of the dock and he’s already leaking a lot of oil.
I understand why he’s been out of the majors since 2010.
You might even call him the Exxon Valdez.
This game is a write off.
I’ve never heard of our pitcher or half of these Mariners…I also have no idea who manages Seattle. I’m a hardcore baseball fan, baby.
I think it’s Chuck Knox. Or maybe Lenny Wilkens.
Seems plausible to me.
Who or what is a Chad Pinder?
He’s the new Cliff Pennington.
Well then…I’m intrigued.
I agree that Mariners games are extra tedious for some reason.
So, Scott Servais is their manager…I would have gone with Chuck and Lenny.
Drat. Edmonton taking it to the Sharks early.
Tied up!
Somehow.
Prescient.
It’s crazy that SJ’s up 2-1 at the break, Edmonton dominated most of that period. Jones and Braun saving the day so far.
Adam Rosales is playing so I assume something has gone horribly wrong.
That would be an Affirmative.
Who or what is a Jeff Decker?
Jeff Decker? I barely Jaff Knew ‘er.
So far Glorious Mundy is more entertaining than this game.
He already has 3 hits vs. lefthanded pitchers, which would take Matt Joyce about 80 plate appearances to do.
That’s a new one. What a break.
Well, that just happened.
That’s a BS throwing error…that was just bad luck.
“DIES IN THE GRASS! then rolls foul”
ok vince
IT IS RISEN
It’s not an official game until Ed quotes Vince.
Brandon Crawford, this Mariners guy…suddenly an epidemic of longhairs at the shortstop position.
God damn hippies.
Motter was the inspiration for Nitkowski’s comment about “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” being one of the greatest movies ever the other day. It’s great to have Spicoli in town on 4/20.
I just found out what 4/20 day meant today…and yes, yes I’m not cool.
You don’t have to smoke drugs to be cool, Bed.
You do have to think some decent music has been written since 1985, though.
How dare you, Soaker. I’m totally down with what the kids are playing on their Sony Walkman’s these days.
I ride with Nancy Reagan…Just Say No..unless it involves fooling around with Frank Sinatra.
drugs in arkansas? um.. lets ot start this
Gotta do ’em before they expire.
Speaking of 4/20, how did I miss this?
There was a guy who played a few games for the A’s a couple years back, Bryan Anderson. Spitting image.
Anderson is memorable because Melvin would rather give up the designated hitter in the 4th inning than put him in the game.
He was no Brian Anderson that’s for sure.
Speaking of Spicoli-looking ballplayers
The reality is, Cesar Valdez needs to pitch with confidence and deliver a shutdown inning here.
So Ray is saying playing Healy playing 1st/3rd/DH might be hurting his hitting,,,this seems obvious to everyone but the A’s.
I’ve seen enough of Plouffe.
He always seemed pretty decent with the Twins, but they seem to have got along just fine without him.
He does have some power, and he had a couple pretty good RBI years in Minnesota so I imagine he got a number of big hits, which makes a player popular. The A’s have too many guys with career .308 OBP though.
I think I played against Valdez in a softball game back in 95.
I don’t think you’d want this guy to face their lineup a third time.
Time for the supposedly deep bullpen to carry the load.
I was actually expecting this game to be 90 pitches from Valdez, 90 pitches from Alcantara, and then other relievers for the final 3 innings, probably Rosales for the 8th and 9th. So this is quite pleasing so far.
This guy is the definition of a junk baller. Seattle is going to be irate if they don’t manage to win this game.
Yes, yes they will. I am bookmarking all the Mariners fans who were talking smack on Twitter at 3-0.
Suddenly Valdez has become Frank Tanana…and yes, yes I’m old.
Montas!
Nothing says macho like doing quail egg shooters.
Speed Kills.
Just like a snake? What?
what the?
Adam Rosales: Legendary RBI Man
Scribles doesn’t exactly strike fear in my heart.
Ken and Vince are getting deeper into BABIP than they’ve ever been.
ken mentioned “looking at the computer last night”
I imagine Vince using a Packard Bell with an AOL email account.
I bet he gets so excited everytime he hears “You’ve Got Mail”.
My father finally ditched the AOL e-mail account around the beginning of this year.
My Dad upgraded from his flip phone to an iPhone this year…I think he’s up to 1 app.
Healy back
Things just keep getting better.
Good on Plouffe for restoring some order.
He caused only half the outs I expected him to cause.
I was thinking Don’t GIDP Don’t GIDP THANK YOU
Plouffe and Joyce doing Plouffe and Joyce things.
I have concerns that the Angels version of Joyce is back.
yes
God damn hippie!
Should of stuck with Tanana.
2 inning of montas was a stretch
The ball goes a long way when they run into Montas’ straight ass fastball.
I don’t miss Valencia even slightly.
This has actually ended up being a pretty entertaining game.
So will the Astros have the division wrapped up by June?
That looks like the Scribbler we all know and loathe.
He did have a certain all-too-familiar facial expression.
A bunt? In the 6th? In a high scoring game?
Surely you can’t think the combination of the A’s bullpen and the A’s defense will allow another run in three innings.
Surely you can’t be Servais?
That’s a little Airplane! and Scott Servais combo humor for those of you keeping score at home.
They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into, I say let ’em crash!
“Both named Ryan but spelled differently”…I love Ray.
Baseball would be more fun if it was just 7 innings.
I remember that game in 1990.
At a time when I was in the bleachers for most games I skipped that one and was cussing about missing a perfect game, so the Phelps homer was a huge relief. We did get a no-hitter at the Coliseum several weeks later (Nolan Ryan).
All the years I’ve watched baseball and I’ve never seen a no hitter live start to finish.
I saw one Oakland A’s no-hitter from the bleachers. They have 6 overall as the Oakland A’s, 5 at the Coliseum including 2 perfect games.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
Was at the Braden game. Man, around the 6th inning I looked up and did the math. Then was stressed the rest of the way though despite how simple and breezy it was. Then got fucking pissed that Banjo Man showed up around the 7th or 8th annoying the fuck out of me while I was trying to concentrate on the game.
Golf would be more fun if there were no Par 4’s
Jordan Speith wants to make it illegal to play a certain Par 3 on Sunday.
Yeah, he has nightmares about 12.
I’ve seen 2 games and Glenn and Ray have mentioned I wear my sunglasses at night both games.
i quickly went from “you do?” to “how do they know???”
Just when I had about 5 Plouffe-ripping lines loaded up.
Hey what do you know…Plouffe can hit a bit.
The ball hit his bat.
Those are my second favorite kind of balls…behind only Frank Sinatra’s.
Why is that Las Vegas Raiders sign up at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum?
If Plouffe and Joyce got back to back hits the world would have slid into a worm hole that would have destroyed both space and time.
Why the fuck did they pull Healy? Let the kid get late game experience at 1B.
this is weird
Glen Kuiper: Corey Hart Afficinado
Is Decker a hobbit?
Drat.
You’ve gone double drat on us.
can’t double up speed
Adam Rosales: Legendary Flyout Man.
Going to OT. This year’s playoffs have been fantastic so far.
Ray seems obsessed with how Ryon spells his name…I share Ray’s obsession.
We’re near a consensus around here that Aunt Blabby needs to spend more time with the grandchildren.
A free kraut consensus…so, 4 people then?
Really it’s more like a kimchi.
yay, we win
Good win. Juice boxes for everyone.
Pretty interesting interview with Mike Norris on something called the “Super 70s Sports” Podcast.
Lots of good tidbits about his career, Charlie Finley, Billy Martin, young Rickey, and the time Mike Heath tried to restrain Dave Winfield from charging the mound on him.
I remember the Winfield incident. Winfield was about a head taller than Heath, and he ended up grabbing Heath by the forehead (or possibly the throat). Heath was absolutely fearless, and was one of my favorite players even though (by hindsight) he really wasn’t good.
The hell does she need a staff big enough to require a chief for? This is insane.
Does she even have an official role? Nepotism in Chief?
She doesn’t even have an actual job in the WH.
Thanks, and go As.
I believe she officially became an “Assistant to the President” a couple of weeks ago. That’s usually a pretty powerful post, as I understand it.
Wasn’t hard to see this coming.
Here’s hoping that galvanizes the more than 30% of eligible voters who say they are sitting it out. ‘Cause you know it’s not the La Pen supporters who are feeling lethargic/apathetic. The end of Oliver’s segment on Sunday was excellent on this.
You…said that already?
Repeating “Rooted in Oakland” over and over again starts sounding like stuck in Oakland to me.
I assume this statement is in response to Manfredjensenden’s comments about Vegas.
Even if you think football and hockey will do well in Vegas, baseball seems like a reach. Too many games for that market.
Too small a market for multiple teams too.
The bay area sports media is sure to take this news in stride.
95.7 might have to preempt the A’s games for discussion.
It’s his pitching shoulder. Man.
I wonder if he tried to jump a Ford pickup like the dirt bikers in his commercials.
He was driving up the now tarpless 3rd deck of the Coli.
“What Madison Bumgarner does on his day off is anyone’s guess.”
You’d think A) He’s be fucking smart enough to not do that shit in season and B) Have something in his contract about him not dong that shit in season. But fuck them.
B is correct but rumor is they aren’t doing anything because he’s their best player.
Fuck that precedent.
Thanks, and go As.
I’m sure he’s really really sorry.
In a just world, he’d be fined an amount that matches the amount of time he’s out.
Also, FtGs.
I figured they would have to do this with Rajai’s hammy hurting.
Two helicopters hovering over Berkeley, a little south of my place. We didn’t have a riot scheduled for today, did we?
Oh, just a guy with a gun.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
nice
If only wee had more armed good guys on the streets.
Seems like 90% of these hockey games are going to overtime.
It’s been a great first round. That Caps-Leafs series especially.
Leafs and Caps now in overtime again, fifth time in six games, tying a record. 18 games in the first round have gone to OT, breaking that record.
Welk
Wait, Jaff’s our leadoff hitter now?
this is good
You got someone better?
So we’re a day or so away from TJS?
Siddown Valencia.
Dave Kaval is such a breath of fresh air.
The lack of complaining is shocking.
I don’t know about that sandwich though.
Lew seems to have stopped showing up to games without giving away his seats.
Iwakuma’s windup is too weird.
Double Plouffe
crap, if rosales wesnt in his home run trot, he would have been at third
Huh, Ray says it to-mah-to not to-may-to, I never would have guessed.
this is the kind of game we expected
now, no it isn’t
Solo Plouffed
OK Plouffe
Way over Yonder!
just like we wrote it up
Jaff is nearing a .500 OBP
Nice win, bitches
Winning record on 4/21 baby!
woo
Tormund and Brienne, sittin in a tree…
The Angels lost their ninth out of ten in thirteen innings. This pleased me.
It’s the year 2017, and we are still getting dumb anti-Moneyball pieces.
MIchael Lewis never could have imagined how long sports writers would remain envious of the non-sports writer who wrote the most successful sports book of his generation.
shit that is an infuriating article.
I never recovered from him calling the Angels a small market team.
Unscrupulous force meets unlikable object.
Hard to overstate the cluelessness of the Rangers FO giving up on Rosales.
It’s a well worn path.
You almost have to walk Davis with Double Plouffe hitting behind him.
Nice
This bullpen is pretty decent, actually.
fwiw
Trevor Plouffe, home brewer. Maybe I’ll have to give him more of a chance.
So, beat up on the bad teams, then when sonny and kendall return… profit?
What does Jason Kendall have to do with anything?
0-0 at first intermission, but Edmonton looks a lot sharper, as they did last game. I haz concerns.
Bummer. Thought they would even it up in the third.
That team sure fell off a cliff in a hurry.
Foreseeable based on the end of their regular season. Even allowing for the Thornton and Couture injuries, the Sharks were nowhere near as good since March as they’d been most of the year before that.
angels?
Wait, wasn’t Bassitt expected to return soon? I guess not.
I don’t think that would matter, he can be removed from 60 at any time, yeah?
The 60 can only be backdated to a few days before the start of the regular season, so first MLB eligibility would be at the end of May. He can go on minor-league rehab though.
I did my first night-day Coliseum run of 2017 Friday and Saturday. 2-0 record with a couple interesting games. The “Championship Plaza” set up was good, particularly if you show up at the stadium hungry which however I make sure never happens. I don’t really need 76 of the 77 taps; the Denogginizer spigots are behind Sec. 127 and also at the pizza oven in “Shibe Park Tavern”.
Having not been to Oakland for a while, or at least not having looked out the window of a BART car, semi-permanent trash-filled Libbyville tent cities seem to be on the increase. That’s pretty discouraging.
SF, SJ, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, all of the inner-bay urban areas have burgeoning tent encampments now. Often in freeway or BART-adjacent underpasses and such.
Going through Stockton on the way down and being slowed by a stalled 18-wheeler on the freeway I observed it there as well, so maybe Jerryvilles is a more accurate term. The tents are what’s changed, and they increase the visibility drastically, which is perhaps a good thing although jarring to someone who lives where we don’t see it much.
Trumpvilles.
No one’s really saying what’s up with Steve Kerr, but what he’s already gone through with his “surgery-gone-wrong” sounds awful.
Yeah, I can’t even really comprehend the whole “spinal fluid leaking causing massive migraines and debilitating back pain” thing
Thanks, and go As.
Rehab rehab rehab, don’t let anyone go in there. Makes me shudder just thinking about it.
I’ve felt mildly queasy all day since reading about it.
I really dislike this year’s dugout pullovers, green gray and white only, no gold. Way too somber for proper A’s garb.
Motter fker.
Heh heh.
Triggs reverting to the mean fast.
Who was the last Mariners shortstop who was good for more than about a month? That team churns through them fast.
Didn’t Ketel Marte kill us the last couple years? Now he’s in AAA for Arizona.
(Edit: Yep, .337/.381/.427 vs Oakland, .267/.309/.349 overall)
I much prefer Coulombe in this 0-6 mop-up role, as opposed to 8th inning set-up which is how he was used yesterday.
Also Raul Alcantara, aka La Bandera Blanca.
poor kid is getting the dfa after stinking up the joint, yeah?
At this point he clears waivers, and there’s no “poor kid” about it, he needs to be in Nashville’s rotation for the rest of the year.
One of the podcasts I listen to is Pop Culture Happy Hour, NPR’s take on all kinds of pop culture. At the end of each episode they have a segment on “What’s making us happy this week”, and in a recent one I just listened to Linda Holmes mentioned she’s reading The Arm by Jeff Passan. About pitching, arm injuries, the history of the TJ surgery, etc. Anyone here read it yet?
Well, three out of four is less tedious, especially when I managed to ignore the one stinker in the batch.
Weird that the Angels and Blue Jays are not only playing the last game of their series today, but playing it at night. The Blue Jays play in St. Louis tomorrow, and the Angels are predictably screwing them on the scheduling.
FK both of them.
The Angels can go screw themselves, and actually they do exactly that. A’s-Angels on Thursday is a night game. The following night the A’s play in Houston and Ken has mentioned several times that assuming a normal-length game they will get to the hotel in Houston about 4:30 a.m. on Friday. However, the Angels play the Rangers in Arlington that night so their own hotel arrival would be about the same.
does the CBA penalize them for this?
The new CBA is supposed to address some of these issues. I’m not aware that it has been publicly posted anywhere, and it may not even be finalized (you lawyers, dotting and re-dotting every i). In any case new scheduling provisions would take effect in 2018.
The rule should be simple to write. All get-a-way games for the road team must be played during the day if they don’t have a day off the following day. Idiocy for any team to be able to do that to another.
I can kinda see a weather exemption, but ANaheim would not be a place to get that
Well, I mean posted/intended start times and actual start times are two separate things. Umps and ground crews can certainly delay things if weather crops up and they realize that it’s in everyone’s best interest to start later, they should.
I think it is weather like Arlington in August. You dont need the group crew to say you probably want an evening start there.
That’ll be resolved soon enough.
The Angels decided awhile ago they hate home weekday games, even to silly extremes like you describe. I assume their TV/attendance numbers bear this out.
Regardless of CBA legality, I’d expect Trout and Pujols to see that Thursday night game on the schedule and go into the office of whichever VP decides these matters and threaten bodily harm.
I went to an enjoyable Cubs vs Reds game yesterday. There were probably more Cubs fans than Reds fans there — street vendors outside were even selling Cubs gear — and the Reds jumbotron did a “Bandwagon Cam” feature later in the game, where they labeled Cubs fans with taglines like “thinks the W flag is actually an M”.
Best of all, John Lackey lost.
were the A’s at home this weekend? did this happen during game stuff?
http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/BART-takeover-robbery-50-to-60-teens-swarm-11094745.php
Holy crap. 50 to 60 kids seems unlikely, but still holy crap.
That would have happened well after the A’s crowd was gone, and the Warriors were on the road, so the station would have been pretty empty.
Let’s lock the kids into the cage with the Oakland window smashers and the Berkeley right-wing provocateurs, and let ’em all have at it in a no-holds-barred free for all.
They played day games.
Combine that incident with this one, and we have the makings of a moral panic.
i’m sure this can all be stopped by banning a genre of music. we just need to find out which genre it is.
polka?
Too white.
“that’s mighty white” is my favorite neo nazi phrase
I hope it’s whatever genre encompasses Stephen Vogt’s walk up song.
“Teen mob’s chilling BART attack” is the five-column headline across the top of today’s Chronicle.
They’re just stealing back what was stolen from them.
Panic timeout from Mike Brown as the Blazers close to within 24 points in the first quarter.
Got outscored by 1 over the final 40 minutes. IS KD HOLDING THE WARRIORS BACK
Thanks, and go As.
Robert Krafft, Roger Goodell, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump, the asshole roster runs deep in this excellent story.
Gotta say, really cool to see Eric Thames tear up the league. Shame the A’s signed Joyce instead of him.
every goddamned time, with the title of this post.
”
Hey did Argentina start paying players yet? Asking for a friend.
Thanks, and go As.
yeah, the promissory notes are flowing, sampaoli finally found out he was offered the selección, and if you’re caught in the wrong stands even if you’re wearing the right jersey it’s preferable to jump from the 2nd deck and die while they steal your shoes than stay and get beaten with flagpoles. everything’s back to normal.
Still better than Loria
Does bringing back Valdez mean Graveman is not back this week after all?
No, Valdez replaces Alcantara as bullpen mop-up for the next two days.
That’s one of the nastier collisions I’ve seen recently (Astros).
