When hoping for an ugly error-marred slugfest is your best chance. After Alcantara left us trailing 8-0 through two innings, the A’s have clawed back to 8-4, still batting in the top of the fourth.

Alcantara was…hittable.
No success. Free Kraut always knows.
There are ugly curved lines all over the Rangers outfield. They resemble the stains you might see on the mattresses at an old summer camp.
It’s really weird.
Something about some other previous event they held in the stadium, if I understood the Rangers’ radio guys correctly. They kept it for the first homestand but it will be gone after their next road trip. I’m thinking that’s Ms. PacMan in right field.
“Stadium golf” according to Glen.
This would be a good time for a Semien.
That was a less desirable outcome.
[Logs on with phone hoping for a blue screen.]
Crap
Multiple boo boos from that belly flop.
I don’t see how keeping Alcantara on the MLB roster all year is anything other than a waste of a roster space. Ideally nobody claims him after a DFA, he spends the season in Nashville and in September the A’s take another look. But if another team were to claim him I don’t think I’d be too torn up about it.
Designate him tonight, plug Hahn in the rotation until Gray is back, and get Decker with team immediately.
I’d be bummed. He has good stuff, and is still young (despite being in the organization for 5 years already). But he probably can’t hack it in the rotation, and the bullpen is already crowded. Maybe they could at least get something back in a trade, but I think I’d rather send down Coulombe.
I thought we calculated late last year that Alcantara would be eligible for a fourth option and was disappointed that we obviously weren’t right. Some guys run out of options too early and it can destroy whatever potential their career has.
I thought he would be eligible because he had missed a year plus due to surgery, but I think it had been too long since he originally signed.
I’m already sick of Plouffemanoff.
Butler totaled 39 GIDP over his 2 seasons (843 PA). I see Plouffe approaching that rate and possibly challenging Ben Grieve’s single-season (32 GIDP/675 PA in 2000) if he actually gets over 600 PA (gawd I hope not).
Wouldn’t be surprising, he did beat Butler in GIDPs just two years ago.
Also Rajai.
Also Plouffe again.
He doesn’t seem to be much of a third baseman.
Oh Rajai
lots of torque trying to check you swing so much
Alonso’s contract year is off to a very nice start.
Melvin sounded a little testy in his postgame gaggle. I think it was because someone asked if Alcantara lost his spot in the rotation.
At least Jeremy Guthrie has now relieved him of the “worst pitching performance of the weekend” award.
12 batters, 6 hits, 4 walks, 9 runs, 2 sac fly outs and pulled. ERA 121.5
To add insult to injury the bequeathed runner scored, raising his ERA to a round 135.
And it was Guthrie’s birthday …
DFA!
DMOAS!
I like hearing Dave Stewart talk about pitching.
He’s a big fan of the fastball.
I watch a fair amount of golf in the early part of the year and then with baseball starting I wrap up the season with the Masters. Don’t discount Jon Rahm on the basis of youth. He had a very good showing in the match play tournament a couple weeks ago. He plays aggressively, he’s built like a tight end and his game puts him in a position similar to where Jordan Spieth was 2 or 3 years ago.
It looks like there will be a cluster of four top players going into tomorrow, so it’s not looking like a year for a great comeback or a miracle Sunday for a darkhorse.
Eight guys within four shots. Rooting for Sergio but watch out for Spieth.
6 years and 1 day too early with that comment but I got it right eventually. It’s Rahm’s 10th win on the PGA Tour since then, and second major.
Yeah Rahm looks like he’s going to be one of the best for years. Rarely gives away strokes from carelessness, unlike Spieth.
I think we havea sufficient sample size for rajai.
Also, canha had reverse splits when he was in the majors a few years ago
How long before Rosales takes Plouffe’s job?
Kouz lasted until Game 60 in 2011. He had a previous full season of suck with the A’s in 2010 so those situations aren’t quite parallel.
I hadn’t noticed this before, I just thought Kouz and Plouffe were in very similar situations in Oakland, but scanning down to the bottom of Kouz’s B-R page, the player with the highest Similarity Score is none other than Trevor Plouffe.
Kouz was at least an above average defender at third, wasn’t he? I remember him being pretty good over there. I don’t see the same from Plouffe.
His defense was still good in his first season here (enough to make him an average player overall, if you believe the metrics), then fell off a cliff in that second year.
I need this in my life.
Sigh
Didn’t watch last night (lucky me).
Wow, that outfield surface looks terrible.
Apparently they gave Yonder Alonso a fake cake in the clubhouse for his birthday. No report on whether Doug Rader was involved.
Thank you for this.
Catch the FKing ball
Glen and Ray full of excuses for why Semien dropped the throw which hit him in the fucking glove.
Right? The throw wasn’t perfect but come on.
2nd time’s a charm.
Semien’s an OBP machine all of a sudden.
Anyone know how often Hudson threw his sinker in the early days? It seemed like around 95% at the time.
FFS, Rajai
Speed never slumps.
Except when it stupidly gets picked off second base.
Unprecedented
Graveman is pitching well.
We have reached the “alert banner on the mlb.com scoreboard” level of pitching well.
Productive ougt
73 pitches through 6 innings, that’s a 110 pace which is probably right at the max for start #2.
not so much an issue
He could stay in for the 8th but Bob wants Casilla…
Napoli’s veteran savvy maybe not looking so valuable right now.
Well…
Sunnavabitch!
Depending on how sick Plouffe is, Melvin may have two players on his bench tonight and his “backup centerfielder” as the DH.
With this bench Bob may have to give up the DH on occasion, though that is somewhat mitigated by Rosie’s ability to play 6 positions.
Do we know who the emergency catcher is? I can’t think of anyone.
Probably Rosales, right?
That’s the logical guess, but the next pitch he catches will be his first in pro ball. If somebody with a Twitter account wants to give @vincebaseball a chance to make himself useful, I wouldn’t mind knowing.
Hooray for breaks.
Hit way out Yonder
Yonder!
Very nice catch
Geez .500, keep flirting with us this way and we’ll think you want to stick around.
Her permanent departure the last two seasons has been Game 27 last year and Game 17 in 2015, so I guess the teasing has lasted a little longer than it seemed.
the question is : are these A’s for real?
Yu is now 3-10 vs. the A’s in his career. He has lost as many as 4 games to only one other team, the Astros.
His shit only works on good hitters.
KD is back.
Yeah baby
Debating whether I should be careful talking junk to Giants fans because I know this won’t last, or just get it all out of my system now while it’s ripe.
Think of it like a closer getting a mop-up inning in a blowout. You gotta stay sharp.
I love Wondo.
Thanks, and go As.
so, alcantara in the 3rd?
“If you’re a basestealer, you want to be able to get on base.”
Thanks as always, Ray.
He was so close to getting a 1-2-3 inning. Painful.
The Humboldt fairy has been joined by the Posey family.
Come on, Sean. Get your shit together.
And he does!
I endorse his new “strike everyone out” approach.
Oh Marcus …
This strike zone fucking sucks.
It’s all over the place.
Srsly.
Strike three to Khris Davis was brutal.
A commercial break with no ads, just in studio. Tell me again how you need to fuck with the game instead of cutting between inning breaks?
Vogt for Phegley here would have made some sense.
Damn. This is a frustrating game.
If a third baseman gives you that kind of chance, take home.
Ron “Mea” Kulpa
We have had the pleasure of enjoying Mr. Kulpa’s ball-strike calls before.
Healy today is showing why Alonso was re-signed.
FKing Mariners.
Oh my god.
Fien was bad, but at least he was efficient: 2H (1HR) 2BB 4ER in only 14 pitches.
Pennington reached base twice (BB, walk-off single) in that ninth-inning rally. That’s a real indictment of the Mariner’s bullpen.
It’s ever so early, but at 1-5 with a loss where you led in extra innings and a loss where you led by six runs in the ninth, Seattle better have a very good homestand or they might spin out.
Did both of the golf dudes choke on that last hole, or is that just golf being hard?
Mostly hard. You don’t assume Rose’s 20′ putt is going to drop, and it almost did. Sergio’s miss was a bit more choke-y, and afterwards I was sure he was doomed. On the playoff hole Rose’s tee shot was horrible and that was that. Great back nine duel though, and Sergio’s iron shots especially were fantastic.
Walking back to re-play the 18th all the momentum was with Rose … how did his tee shot go so awry?
It happens routinely. Watch Phil Mickelson, he hits a couple of those every round.
Actually Garcia had the momentum going back to 13. Garcia, already two strokes behind, hit his own tee shot into a bush and had to take an unplayable lie, but was able to save par, while Rose missed a birdie putt. Those go the other way, Rose is up by four and it’s about over then.
Speaking of wild alcoholic daydreams…
