I like the look of this, but is this actually Rich Harden?

we have established this is a fake, yeah?

nm: Is there an easy way to get the new version of wp to show the author of a post? (Can usually, but not always, figure it out from signature and/or style.)
I usually turn the signature off (or think to), but I chose to leave it because of that
But upon further reflection….whadda ya mean? Huh? whatcha tryin to say? Hmm?
Done.
That’s funny. I wanted to ask the same thing and then looked at this post again and thought, well that would have been embarrassing, before seeing your comment
just no fucking clue
I’d love to know what he imagines a one-state solution acceptable to both sides would look like.
The BEST DEAL. A BETTER DEAL THAN WE’VE EVER HAD.
That’s what.
Obviously the one-state solution acceptable to both sides is the one where he blows up the whole Middle East and then both sides can’t possibly say no because you can’t talk when you’re dead
Totally fake.
Meanwhile, congrats to this dude for being the worst of an unprecedentedly bad crop of cabinet nominees. That’s a hell of an accomplishment.
I hope that wasn’t his choice of words
Yes, if accurately quoted that is either staggering cluelessness or deliberate trolling.
Sessions is still worse.
Oh, on the merits, definitely. But in terms of presentability to the public, Puzder was a complete disaster. They couldn’t even risk putting him in a hearing he was so bad.
Two days before he reportedly bailed. Excellent timing as always, Mitt.
Don’t understand Mitt’s game here at all.
Arsene did you not tell your players about Robben liking his left foot???
Also maybe should have told them that there would be a second half.
The campaign for what?
He’s already tried to register as a candidate for 2020 (as a way to limit what 501-c3’s can say about him).
I have my doubts about the effectiveness of that strategy as a means of speech suppression. I’d like to see the IRS try to revoke someone’s non-profit status based on when he filed FEC papers.
I guess it does allow him to keep spending other people’s money on campaigning rather than the much less fun presidenting.
Oh come on.
Could this be more ridiculous.
I mean it can’t be any worse for the Marlins than Loria. God help the fucking French though.
So will they say it was just locker-room treason?
When you’re a tsar, they let you do it.
Assuming come October that there’s still a World in which to have a Series, I expect it will include the A’s.
me too

I don’t buy into those things. Seems too much like wishful thinking.
hilarious tweets? or humor in general?
yes
He or she tweeted about the phone check policy almost a full month before the media reported on it.

Hard to believe people were THAT stupid. But here we are.
I’m scared to turn on this press conference. Are we all gonna die?
….
“Are they friends of yours” … casual racism Thursdays.
its not friday?
This is absolutely, positively insane. Keep in mind that the reporter in this exchange is an ultra-orthodox jew from a small publication that no one has ever heard of.

Trump state department probably thinks the “Oakland A’s” are fake news.
No. That would be too close to true.
He just wants to brag about his strand rate.
Shutdown inning!
I don’t think Trump has had a single shutdown inning since the inauguration.
Flynn sure did.
Six in one day sounds like a lot.
Meanwhile…
“Chief Digital Officer” sounds like a position for which you would want to run the background check before you let them start working but what do I know.
Who wants to meet Charlie Finley’s daughter? Wish I could make it…
Last few years Charlie’s image has been rehabilitated a bit, getting some appreciation as foresighted on things like free agency and the DH. He of course also traded off the pieces of the greatest baseball dynasty of my lifetime for 30 pieces of silver and tried to move the A’s to Denver. He’s definitely due for a historical re-examination. We’ll see if his daughter is the right one to do that. I’m interested in reading the book for sure.
She’s Charlie’s first cousin once removed, I think.
Yup – cousin Carl Finley’s daughter.
Did anyone go? Did she obnoxiously compare Charlie to a tech startup?
I want the A’s to give a tryout to this young woman who just threw a no-hitter for Fresno State softball.
http://www.sanluisobispo.com/sports/college/cal-poly/article132199034.html
Amazing performances, reminds me that at some point I want to go to a Cal softball game, one of the sports I haven’t yet been to.
The comment about the A’s bringing them in reminded me of this really interesting (long) article about hitting, reaction times, and other sports & science related analysis.
what’s with the eye black? is that a jesus thing?
what’s with the eye black? is that a jesus thing?
I cant figure out why she didnt take his last name. So much for tradition.
She’d need to go through the draft first, no?
no from hawaii, africa is not in the US
Further testament to the quality of a Duke education.
Jed!: BSOHL
120 plate appearances, do you take the over or the under?
Under.
This is good.
The new public-facing part of the A’s ownership team is really killing it this off-season. Lots of steps, many not expensive, all displaying the attitude that “We actually like you, fans.” Such a refreshing change from the “Shut up and eat your pine cone” era.
Investing in staying, gotta love it.
That’s the first I’ve heard of this “Brooklyn Basin” idea.
I know. It’s almost like they’re trying to reel me back in!
The players agree.
Kaval is building up a lot of goodwill just by grabbing the low-hanging fruit Lew had left to rot on the branch.
Lew was just focused on making it easy for his successor.
Sweet. I’ve always complained about the lack of bocce courts at the stadium.
Thanks, and go As.
How about
And is this
a subtle dig at the Raiders?
A better beer selection is definitely a good idea.
I guess they’re trying to bring in more casual fans with all the extracurriculars.
Thanks, and go As.
The West Side Club always has been open to everyone in the A’s configuration. But I think calling it a “club” may have made some fans think otherwise.
The existence of the “club” seats in front of it also confuses things.
Thinking about this more, it will be interesting to see how they fit 16 food trucks in that plaza area. Also, according to Jane Lee, the “Champions Pavillion” will be accessible only to people with game tickets, so they have to be essentially cutting off the ability to cross between the north and south parking lots.
Though you could still go the other way, past the BART bridge.
True, although that can be a major clusterFK after big games.
Probably gets opened up after games. No reason at that point not to and I doubt they’d use permanent barriers there.
Ah, the romance of the cup!
A non-league team (Lincoln City) is in the quarter finals for the first time since 1914, where they’ll meet either Arsenal or another non-league team (Sutton United), depending on tomorrow’s result. You’d root for Sutton, which would guarantee a non-league semi-finalist, except they’ve sold their soul to the despised Sun for this game.
Great shot of the Arsenal players entering the away changing room at Sutton:
That is so cool.
there are going to be so many butt taps
The most striking thing in these games isn’t the difference in skill. It’s the difference in speed. The Sutton players look like they’re running in sand.
Ah, the romance of the cup
Piss on the Scum, and on Sutton for selling their soul to them.
The storm about to roll into these parts sounds pretty intense.
so fucking tired of this shit
My pickup softball game has been rained out 11 of the last 12 Saturdays.
yup. us too
i don’t care. i’m working anyway, the drive was cake, and i got to park right in front for free.
i mean… thanks for the swamp, presidents 1–44!
Some of these warm-weather February trips I have taken in recent years, it didn’t feel like I was escaping much of a winter. Not so this year. Breakfast has been consumed, the beer is in the cooler, time to head for the beach (Hapuna Beach today, on the Kohala coast, about 30 miles north from Kailua).
It’s currently 60 degrees and sunny in Cincinnati. But for some reason I am flying out to the bay area later this week…
Hapuna Beach is one of my very favorite beaches anywhere.
Today’s Grand Finale is a return to Hapuna on a glorious (and crowded) day, with plenty of time for an evening detour to the Big Island Brewhaus up in Waimea before the red eye. That microbrew is a welcome respite from Kona Brewing’s corporate monopoly of mediocrity.
I like some of the Maui Brew Co offerings much more than anything Kona has.
more of a theoretical / math-spurred question than anything… so while signatures are gathering for calexit and the dude supposebly running this from his home in russia gets interviewed on breitbart and blah blah blah, i’m wondering, wouldn’t it be better for california to double down rather than fold?
suppose we split into two states, that’s 4 senators (though probably not additional congresspeople per se). i’m wondering, are there other ways to leverage for numerical power with two states instead of one. are there disadvantages?
i even wonder, a nor/sou divide would pretty much split the state proportionally, but would there be an advantage to democrats in carving out the less-populated republican landlocked counties? i guess that’d be gerrymandering.
As an Ohio resident, I find Calexit terrifying because it would be leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves.
Splitting into two states might have some merit, but it’s not going to happen. About a year ago, there was some guy pushing his “Six Californias” plan. You can guess where he is coming from by the fact that a state containing SF, Oakland, San Jose, Fremont, and Salinas is named “Silicon Valley”. I think I read somewhere that his northmost state, “Jefferson”, would edge out Mississippi for the title of poorest state in the US — largest employer is Enloe Medical Center in lovely Chico.
Neither plan has a chance in hell of happening though. (I know, that’s what everyone said about T****…)
jefferson has been an idea for a while now. it joins counties on the california/oregon border (and this 6 plan leaves the oregonians out). IIRC, its first major setback was that they proposed statehood like a week before pearl harbor went down. (or something like that.)
Definitely don’t want to carve out the conservative inland areas and give them their own senators, but do want to split them up roughly evenly so that both North California and South California have big liberal majorities.
Other advantages to two liberal Californias include two extra presidential electors (because of the two new senators), an extra state delegation in the event of House selection of the president, and an extra state to ratify/block ratification of constitutional amendments.
One disadvantage would be to dilute the special regulatory influence of California. Right now, the California market is so big that if we raise fuel economy standards (for example) above federal levels (and are not preempted by federal law), auto makers have no choice but to make cars that meet those higher standards. They end up selling those more efficient vehicles throughout the country, rather than make a special car just for California. Two Californias that didn’t coordinate their regs wouldn’t necessarily have that power.
thanks. exactly what i was looking for.
I’d rather have a full on west coast succession and watch the rest of what’s left crumble into historic obscurity.
you know what’s *not* FK’n rad?
Yeah, the whole region there is moronic, not only Serbia. Croatia is just as bad, if not worse. Just huge groups of idiots…
Sean Doolittle is pretty cool
Sorry to break it to you Doo, but if you host dinners for Syrian refugees and organize for the A’s Pride Night, then you are a Democrat.
No… definitely not. Liberal, yes. Lefty yes. But not necessarily a Democrat. I’m an extreme left liberal, but I would never call myself a Democrat. I have issues with their politics, they’re just more livable (far more so) than the GOP.
Actually he told NYT last year that he was registered Republican but disenchanted. The old up-by-own-bootstraps outlook wasn’t incompatible with welcoming refugees among conservatives not so very long ago.
This makes him very similar to me.
This Man City – Monaco game is wild.
Completely FKing bonkers.
Fangraphs win-loss projections are up.
They have us picking up 10 more wins (79) and still finishing comfortably last in the division behind the Astros (91) and the Angels, Mariners, Rangers (all 83).
How bad must the Padres roster be to get a 65-win projection?
I don’t know how I feel about eliminating the pitches in the intentional walk. I guess it’s fine, but it seems kind of artificial for some reason, and it won’t really save much time. I also feel like excessive intentional walks are mostly an NL problem.
Worst case outcome is that it encourages managers to issue more IBB, but I think that is unlikely.
I hate it. Shit can happen during those 4 tosses. Shit has happened. And a great historical moment like someone striking out in the World Series can get lost. Cut commercial time between innings to speed up the game. Most of it is garbage attempts to sell their own shows anyway. Create commercial scarcity.
I really enjoy it when the home slugger is getting IBB’d and the home crowd is booing while he stands there taking the pitches. It ratchets up the intensity in what is necessarily an already fraught moment.
There’s less drama when the NL #8 hitter is getting walked to bring the pitcher up, but that’s their problem.
Yeah, this idea is stupid. I can’t imagine it amounts to enough time to drop the average game length even 30 seconds.
Both of these outcomes are still very much in play.
Leicester is sitting one spot (and one point) above the relegation zone in the Prem. Meanwhile, they are about to kick off a round of 16 Champions League tie against Sevilla.
Leicester is getting played off the pitch so far in Spain. It’s mind-boggling that these are the defending English champions.
And they fired their coach today. Takes some doing to get canned 9 months after winning the league title for freaking Leicester.
i’m giving out the emotional hi-lo of the day award early (i’m not even waiting to find out what 2:22:22 2/22 feels like):
using the wond’rous wonders of the internet to listen to live music from around this, our ensmallening world, stopping for a while in havana… and hearing a verizon commercial followed by a sprint one followed by lite jazz.

Been watching “The People vs. OJ Simpson.” Were men’s suits and ties really that ugly and ill-fitting in the mid-90s? I lived through that period, and I remember it being bad, but oh my god it burns the eyes.
absolutely.
Yup.
I liked that series. I was unemployed that summer and watched a LOT of the OJ trial. The People vs OJ really captured the feel well.
I was really impressed by it too, since I was far too little to appreciate the crazy at the time.
Just finished that. It was interesting how the show portrayed it as so seat of the pants, with the glove and fuhrman and such. Having never read anything about it, I wonder how much truth there is to it. and the jury stuff.
The miniseries was based on a book by Toobin. I’ve read at least one of his other books (about the Rehnquist court) and he seems like a pretty thorough researcher (but I’m not a lawyer).
there were opinions/analysis of his I didn’t like on some crim law stuff, but he is a good writer.
I was thinking the other day when i was in the hall bullshitting with cops I was about to cross examine in a preliminary hearing, there was a pretty true to life interaction bewteen, I think cocran and a cop that took some evidence home. shit like that happens a lot.
I think FSU and I were happy about the same thing yesterday. In more basketball news there’s a Euro-step and then there’s a Cro-step
At that moment all right-thinking people were Orangemen.
Oh hey, we could have our second (that I know of) oscar-winning A’s fan.
“just one run in his inning of work” doesnt sound right
We did it.
This Showtime show “Billions” is hilariously bad, isn’t it?
I actually liked Season One a lot. It’s a conceivable portrayal of the DOJ in NY, at least.
In some ways, yes, but the wife working as the in-house psychiatrist at the hedge fund is a little unbelievable and all of the macho posturing is so over the top.
That said, I’m only halfway through the season and I can’t stop watching Giamatti swallow the scenery, so I may end up liking it in the end.
I do enjoy the depiction of the push-pull between the big New York law firms and the Southern District. The Cravathish partner telling him that he could do whatever he wanted if he joined the firm because they basically just want his name and reputation on their letterhead was classic.
Some great moments in “can this British actor keep his tenuous grip on an outer-borough accent while shouting” in this show.
Hard not to read the Preet Bharara non-resignation and picture Giamatti scheming to make himself unfireable.
Yeah, Preet doesn’t have quite that game (though Giamatti’s scheme would fail horribly vs. Trump/Sessions too)
First two episodes of season two are pretty damn good. It’s like they found the right tone over the break. I’m in.
Glad to hear. I’m looking forward to ’em.
YES. I GOT USMNT TIX.
Thanks, and go As.
Nice. Through the Quakes?
Quakes STHs got to enter the lottery
Thanks, and go As.
Stolen from a Deadspin comment: If this doesn’t prove baseball players are the dumbest of all pro athletes, I don’t know what does…
A caller asked later her whether they ever had sex before games and Upton said that he was superstitious enough that they never did.
Worse than the flat Earthers in the NBA?
And football players throw their hat in the ring.
By next week’s Top Chef finale, Padma will be completely topless.
it’s right there in the title™.
a pastry chef cooks pastries, a top chef cooks…
Another reason why this has been one of the best seasons yet.
CNN, NYT, BBC, and others blocked from WH press briefing. Fucking hell.
It’s kind of heartening that these guys are so ham-handed in their Nixonian bullshit. It’s like they’re hanging a sign on the place saying “These stories are getting to us. Keep them coming.”
I find it heartening that a few right-slanted outlets spoke up on their behalf either boycotting or showing a willingness to had they been aware of it.
good god
Second time this week, they found a WW2 bomb on a way between my home and work. At least I could drive around, a guy I play tennis with had to go to a city hall to spend the night.
Anybody watching “Abstract” on Netflix?
it’s on my list. but i’m not excited about it.
https://qz.com/916402/netflixs-new-design-series-spreads-the-wrong-idea-about-design/
bonus neat, designery thing to look at.
hat tip.
It was on my suggested list but I haven’t started yet. Thoughts?
Thanks, and go As.
I watched parts of first three episodes (Virginia watches it) and liked it.
Detaining Muhammad Ali’s sun at a Florida Airport is an excellent move. Him returning from participating in a Black History Month event in Jamaica makes it perfect all around.
These fascist border patrol dudes are as dumb as they are racist.
because the first amendment. DOES HEAVEN HAVE THE FIRST AMENDMENT??
Could Jesus design a vetting process so extreme that even He couldn’t pass it?
well… no middle easterners?
Christian refugees tho
cool. my dad is in
He was Jewish though.
Bannon says he’s out.
i hate asking these polarizing questions (or, as bed would say, not to get political), but what’s the more inevitably danceable podcast intro music, the reply all or the you are not so smart?
i hate hate hate that 538 got a new song. the old one made me shake it PLUS the first note is like the sound of plugging in my computer, which made me shake it in silent reminiscence every time i plugged in my computer.
hrm. wasn’t meant as a reply. it’s a stand-alone polarizing question.
primary concerns has a nice groove.
pod save america totally ripped off big star!!
I cant shake the feeling that the PSA theme is directly ripped off from an NES game, but I can’t think of which one.
hmm. has that instrumentation, yes.
It’s totally this. Or, more precisely, this.
omg!! hilarious.
[shirtless sweaty high five]
Holy cow.
OK, I think that bit may have been the best Oscars segment ever. I loved how the tour group just came in and were ready to participate, and the stars all got into it. Really fun moment.
It went on too long, and FFS those people needed to put their damn phones away.
Thanks, and go As.
Interesting night. I just got off the phone, and it appears that I’M actually the winner of Best Picture.
Good thing Spartacus wasn’t nominated this year, or the post-mistake confusion would have been endless. “I’m Moonlight!” “No, I’m Moonlight!” etc etc
I had been thinking more along the lines of Oprah:
