I guess we can write off Chad Pinder:
Thing that stands out for me from all of these looks at the system is that at the same time as the team can’t find a better major league CF than Rajai to be a stopgap, there is not a single player on the farm right now who projects as starting major league CF. That seems like a problem.
Ladbrokes has Trump at basically even money to resign or be removed by impeachment in the next four years.
I’d bet against that. Bigly.
Had to edit that for you.
Thanks, and go As.
One can imagine a scenario where the GOP wants to get rid of his ass and move on to President Pence, while the Democrats try to keep the scandal-emasculated Trump around through the end of his term, so perhaps a No on the impeachment/removal. Resignation is my bet, particularly if the Democrats kick butt and take over the Senate, at least, in 2018. I can’t see him dealing well with the types of frustrations Obama has put up with.
I can’t see him resigning unless as part of a quid pro quo to stay out of jail or something like that.
I could see him just not showing up for work after a while.
I don’t know who this dude even is.
Those guys don’t look softly sensual.
They remind me of Caputo’s band on Orange is the New Black.

Mind numbing that it’s still a debate. But like too many things, the dumb is strong in this country.
There are a lot of men in this country who really, really hate the idea of women having control of their own lives.
BMac ftw
I’m fine with the Wilcox selection. It’s an attempt to replicate the Tedford hire; in that case Tedford was chosen over Charlie Strong because of his local recruiting connections, and the same here it appears. Wilcox is coming in late, and Tedford inherited the senior year of Kyle Boller which Wilcox obviously does not have, so 2017 will be challenging for Wilcox, like 3-9 challenging. Tedford brought in Aaron Rodgers for his second and third years so we’ll see how Wilcox can match that one (and Marshawn Lynch as well).
Never heard of Wilcox. So the part of “fine with the selection” was a giveaway it’s not a new cabinet member.
I followed Wisconsin this season. I LOVE Wilcox. The defense kept Wisconsin in games when the offense was stagnate. Sucks for Wisconsin; second defensive change in as many years.
Sure sounds like the Raiders are gone unless nine owners can’t stomach either Vegas or Sheldon Adelson.
Once you’re committed to leaving, then just leave, Mark, don’t stay in Oakland as a lame duck. The Chargers will play in that 30K seat soccer stadium in Carson, and actually 30K is probably a good fit for LA’s interest in them. Sam Boyd Stadium is around that same capacity but it’s so bare-bones I guess it’s not considered an option. They could perhaps lend themselves to San Antonio for a couple years, or be the experimental home team in Mexico City.
Their Coliseum lease for 2017 and 2018 was reported as “team option” years, but I assume there’s some amount of buyout required. I suspect the Raiders feel they’ll still draw OK, the whole Raider Nation transcends geography thing. I don’t know if that’ll prove true. I still plan on going to lame duck games, if it should come to that. Also they’ll be good.
But if they leave now, we’ll have a pristine baseball field all the way through the 2017 World Series.
The fact that Trump responded to John Lewis with a thinly-veiled racist attack rather than the obvious play of disingenuous sanctimony (“While we have our political differences, John Lewis is an American hero. I hope he’ll reconsider because I would love to have him there.”) is astonishing, even after everything else. There is something deeply, deeply wrong with this man, and it’s getting worse not better.
I constantly feel like there are so many instances where just a basic, boring response would save him soooooo much trouble. Even the Russian thing. “It does appear as though Russian interests may have been behind the hacking, but I truly believe the people voted for my policies and what they think I can bring to the American people…”
His personality just will not let him respond the way any decent (or even partially intelligent) person would.
After 12 hours to reflect on it, he decided to jump back in and double down on this shit. I want to scream.
No way he wasn’t going to after everybody (D&R)started defending Lewis. It just boils his blood when people show him up. I don’t know how to embed a tweet, but I love this one.
The $650M supposedly coming from Adelson is the place this deal could fail. It’s not clear what was ever in it for Adelson which would make that worth it, if a share of ownership is off the table (per Mark Davis generally and the NFL specifically). The Raiders were reported to have told the NFL that Goldman Sachs with finance that $650M if Adelson is out, but again, what return on investment makes that worth it? The ticket and seat license revenues in particular seem really speculative. This is essentially the same gap that exists in various Oakland plans, but in a more dubious media and attendance market.
It does kind of feel like the NFL is leaning towards approval, presumably to stem the tide of cities closing their checkbooks. But I still don’t get how Vegas pencils out.
If the Raiders do leave, I wonder how long before teams start using the East Bay/North Bay/Sacramento market as leverage against their own cities.
Hard to say. No way Oakland gets a third try at an NFL team. North Bay/Sac doesn’t feel substantial enough. It’s no accident that Jacksonville, the next least-well situated team, has played in London almost every year for awhile.
I don’t know. If someone was willing to put up the money for a stadium, the population size and corporate base would be hard to turn down. I could see it happening if the Davis family were no longer involved. If nothing else, it’s plausible enough for teams to threaten.
Absolutely zero chance anything happens in the North Bay for any major sport. With the NFL, because of where the 49ers landed, the only other place is the East Bay. As FSU said, Sac is probably too weak a market, especially if spread thin with the NBA. I could see them trying to double up with the 49ers and while doubtful, the East Bay was as much the Raiders fault for failing along with the dubious circumstances surrounding the A’s as it was the city’s.
Sorry, I meant that teams would look at where the 49ers went and see that East Bay + North Bay + Sac is a tasty pool to draw money from. The actual stadium would have to be in the East Bay, for sure.
If the Raiders move to Las Vegas that’s when I’ll be taking my leave as a fan. I can’t support a franchise that would screw over its fans in Oakland a second time especially to move to my least favorie city in America.
Berkeley crime this year seems to be following us FKers around. This woke me up last night.
Yikes!
From the comments:
What’s a six-figure house?
And how miserable must be the lives of the poor suckers living in a five-figure houses here.
The Fox NFL pregame show is so bad. Jimmy Johnson talking about how bad he feels for the Spanos family just made me retch.
Unless you are Ken Griffey, having “Sr.” on the back of your jersey should be a 15-yard penalty.
I’ll allow it for Cal Ripken and Sandy Alomar too.
I guess I’ll go with the long spelling then. “señor AV.”
OK Houston, time to Mercilusly Clowney the fucking Pats.
I can’t even be bothered to put any rooting energy into this game. Surprisingly close so far thanks to a couple of turnovers. But when you’re 16-point underdogs and get some lucky bounces early on, shouldn’t you also take some risks, like going for it on 4th and short, or going for two to tie it?
No chance tonight – they were facing a team with an actual NFL QB.
I kinda wish John Gruden was calling this game. I want to hear him tell us all how Osweiler is actually good, and how he’s been unfairly criticized.
Something about the Texans always seems fake to me. They’re like a team in the video game that couldn’t secure NFL trademark licenses.
I feel the same about the Washington Nationals. So generic.
I’m OK with this.
a turd, momma. a turd! somebody sent me a turd!
A reference to this came up in a game of 80’s Trivial Pursuit I played this morning and it leaves me with so many questions.
With the most obvious answer being money, of course.
Did he say “smuggling weasel dust”? And what on earth is that accent?
Just terrible. I do like Sonny Crockett’s head-to-toe white parachute material outfit though.
Aaron Rodgers is pretty good.
Seriously.
Alex Smith, not as good.
It gives me much pleasure to see the Chiefs flame out again, even if it means the Stillers had to win.
Yeah, an especially distasteful slate of other AFC teams this year. Go Packers.
I’m glad they ran that Skip Bayless “MY Dallas Cowboys!!!” promo a few times.
Little known fact…Skip Bayless means turn the channel in German.
Peace out asshole.
SAD!
have always thought this song was oh so touching and lovely and full of odd imagery that somehow works so well.
and, it always made me think of robbe-grillet’s jealousy. something about the setting, the colonies, the civil servant.
BUT!
turns out it’s about another difficult po-mo book entirely.
If I do stop following the Raiders this gives me more time for KU football…hmmm…maybe I haven’t thought this through.

I’m troubled by the mere existence of #s 9 and 6.

Thanks, and go As.
Hah.
Hooray for Marcus Thompson.
He’s wonderful.
Kevin Durant may be awesome at many things, but his shoveling technique is pathetic. All in all I’d hire Derek Norris instead.
Can I have $250 million?
Why the hell do you need 21 bathrooms? Even with 12 bedrooms, that’s 9 beyond en suite.
That’s why.
It looks like he could stand to spend a bit of his money on curtains.
When I lived in Oakland I used to go for after-work walks in the hills behind the Claremont. There was one house where you could look in and see a telescope in the living room. The telescope was never pointed at the sky; it was always angled down. Sure enough, directly across the canyon and a little lower was a house with enormous windows on its rear (canyon-facing) side.
That’s a nice Sonny Bono portrait he has.
Oh FK. There’s a video of the place
She definitely just flew herself in on that helicopter in that dress and those shoes.
I also love the random sailboat perched in the middle of nowhere.
is that the helicopter from air wolf?? i’m all about the celebrity helicopters!!
amazing though, to have all that money and not know how to live.
and i do wonder about the elevator pitch. “it’s like pee-wee’s playhouse meets a no-pricetags showroom where we curate an installation about futurist tacky.”

Not ominous at all
It figures that President Scheisskopf would want more parades.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.
Better:
“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.”
nailed it.
Wow.
another parallel. wait for it. meanders at the beginning but gets pretty good after that.
Good stuff.
Hmm, that was supposed to be a reply to AV re the podcast but it didn’t indent. And now it is.
Yeah, I can’t figure out what’s screwy, but for the same reason the “leave a reply” box doesn’t snap to the right place, the new comment “stub” doesn’t seem to either.
That, the smart tags, and focusing on the text box are the things that still bug me post-recovery.
Literally unusable. :)
(good work dude.)
Thanks, and go As.
Many thanks for continued efforts in maintaining a shelter from the avalanche of stupidity.
I can’t imagine military brass will be excited about the prospect of parade prep.
If they want a good dacha to spend Defense of the Fatherland Day in, then they’ll shine up their tanks and get out there.
Like this?

…
It’s pretty amazing how poorly Tsar Thinskin has handled the transition, isn’t it?
-At least three of his cabinet nominees couldn’t answer even basic questions about core missions of their agencies, leading to embarrassing video.
–His HHS nominee appears to have insider traded and introduced legislation to help his stock portfolio.
-His defense secretary pick seemingly disagrees with him on everything.
-His NSA designee is completely damaged goods who is hated by the intelligence community, and who got caught backchanneling with the Russian ambassador to undermine Obama’s sanctions for Russian hacking.
-His deputy NSA designee had to pull out after being exposed as a serial plagiarist.
–His national security team is just generally in shambles.
–He’s way behind on designating people for the hundreds of senate confirmable positions he needs to fill.
-He rejected security briefings, thus not even appearing to take the job seriously.
-He not only continued to praise Putin, he said we should “trust him” and cited him as an authority on whether Russia has kompramat on him.
-He made impossible promises about a mythical ACA replacement that put the GOP congress in a bind.
-He got into a fight with a beloved civil rights hero and pissed off the people of Atlanta on MLK weekend.
-He gave a single disastrous press conference that made a mockery of the idea he won’t be profiting from the office.
-In a speech to foreign diplomats, he called his own not-yet confirmed Sec. of State nominee a guy who “goes into a country, takes the oil, goes into another country.”
-He had to send out paid tweets offering free inauguration tickets because no one wants to go.
I’m not sure it would be possible to handle this worse than he has.
my newest fear is our military vulnerability come sunday. (saturday’s safe. we’ll have armies of women to protect us.)
Some pretty concerning stuff here.
Mattis is our best hope for getting through the next few years in one piece, and they seem to be doing everything they can to undermine him.
And yet, it’s almost certain they will all be confirmed, and then he can spin it to his minions that they’re all great, nothing to see hear, we’re ready to go. I remember working at restaurants, and when things got really crazy I would go into a walk-in cooler and scream as loud as I could. I need a walk-in.
And children will be safe from grizzly bear attacks in schools.
Was this one of the three?
Once again, Andeux wins the internet.
I’m suspicious.
Despite the fact that he couldn’t remember its name on national TV, the DOE was one of the three departments Perry wanted to abolish when he ran for the Republican nomination. If he thought that the DOE was simply a booster organization for the US fossil fuel industry I don’t think he’d have had it on his hit-list.
Of course the (scarily plausible) alternative is that he didn’t realize that being Secretary of something meant you were in charge of the corresponding department.
horsemen? no, those are four.
oh wait.
HOF: Raines, Bagwell, IRod.
Three solid choices (out of about a dozen solid choices on the ballot.)
It feels like Jonah Keri singlehandedly got Raines over the hump. I can’t remember such tireless advocacy by a single writer paying off like this.
Blyleven / Rich Lederer
That was the one I was thinking of, but it felt like a broader-based group of statheads pushing him at the time.
Blyleven / Ray Fosse too, or so it seemed. We heard that for years. Ray faced him 61 times (second only to Lolich) and pretty much sucked.
who am I supposed to be indignant about? I cant get excited for mussina
Plan your indignation for the next five years

Hoffman(?) (74%) and Vlad (72%) just missed, and presumably will get over the hump next year.
After that, a big step down to Edgar (59%), Bonds (54%), Clemens(54%) and Mussina (52%), all of whom were below 50% last year.
Between Piazza, IRod, and Bagwell (not to mention dozens of other players going back a couple of decades) it seems very likely that someone who used steroids is already in the HoF, and it becomes increasingly difficult to make a sound argument for keeping out Bonds/Clemens. But there are some writers who will never vote for them, and even at their current rate of increase they will have to wait at least a couple of more years.
I assume you forgot a not between the is and already in that last paragraph.
Also, why do voters love closers and hate DHs?
That’s not how I read it.
Trevor Hoffman received 68 more votes than Edgar Martinez. How is that possible? If Martinez gets a knock for being a limited role player, how does Hoffman not get the same?
Sorry, wasn’t commenting about the closer vs DH argument but re the “not”.
I continue to think Schilling is probably a HOFer. But I am not mad at this.
A’s games will be streamed in-market this season via the NBC Sports app with authenticated access. **Link**.
OH HELL YES!!!!!!!!
That app works really, really well for watching the Warriors, and I assume the Sharks. There are also Apple TV and Roku apps, plus built-in chromecast support.
Yes, this pleases me.
Thanks, and go As.
With the Raiders and Warriors both taking critical steps to leaving this week, this would seem an opportune time for the A’s to make a strong, unqualified public commitment to Oakland. There are rewards to be reaped.
Hallelujah.
Interestingly, I got a cold call from A’s season tix today. I told the (as always wonderful) ticket services gal that I wasn’t going for season tix again until ownership showed willingness to invest in the roster. Surprisingly I thought, her reply was something like “we want fans to know A’s management has gone through some changes we think you’ll like.” I of course still didn’t re-up…tickets will be cheap and plentiful…but I was impressed that they explicitly acknowledged that Lew was perceived as a foe by many fans.
It narrowly beat out “Stuck in Oakland”
May as well be “Routed in Oakland”
seekin’ my fame and fortune,

things got bad and things got worse.
i guess you know the tune.
oh lord…
They realized they can’t use “Join the Party” since very few home games will bear any resemblance to a party.
This is too unrealistic for House of Cards.
Thanks, and go As.
Sad thing is that’s not even close to the worst example of the Republicans blocking an admittedly qualified Obama nominee for no reason but spite.
The Marlins traded 3 players for Dan Straily.
Between Oregon’s hideous court design and Bill Walton’s further descent into madness, this Cal basketball game on ESPN is completely unwatchable.
Really Bill, the high-grade hybrid strains just aren’t for everyone every day.
Aww, KFK failing to get the funny.
True, but when even they are freaked about about being associated with the president of these united states of america, we are in a weird place.
When do the pitchers and catchers of democracy report?
Hey Upgrade–can I ask you a car question (and maybe your car buff friend a question?)
The transmission in my car just failed.
’99 Honda civic hatchback (I’m the original owner)
75K miles
No major problems except maybe my mechanic remembered a distributor issue?
My options are forget it and get a new car, get a “good” used transmission for $1500, get a rebuilt transmission for $3200.
I don’t want to throw good money after bad. However, I put no stock in having a “nicer car” and I’m pretty fond of my old mule that I can just thrash and not worry about. Good gas mileage, cheap insurance, etc.
Would love power windows and heated seats, tho.
If I go the new route it will be something similar like a basic hatchback-Honda, Subaru, Hyundai, etc.
Thoughts? Advice?
I don’t know anything about transmissions, but two things strike me:
1. 75K miles in 17 years! (How on earth did you kill the transmission? Hills, I suppose.)
2. Heated seats in the Bay Area? Sigh. (dons ski jacket, hat and gloves, goes out to fire up snowblower again)
The car we rented on the east coast had a heated steering wheel – nice!
$3200 seems like more money that I would want to put into a 17 year-old car. Back in 2010, I bought a basic hatchback (2005 Scion xA) for $5k. It did have 127k miles at the time, which is more than your car, but it’s now approaching 200k and the most expensive thing I’ve had to do are brakes and tires (i.e. normal maintenance).
It does seem likely that the combination of hills and old age did in the transmission, because that ordinarily wouldn’t happen after, say, 75K and 5 years. Other things will start to go too due to the age. I had my original 1996 RAV4 for 16 years/180K miles but at that point the maintenance was becoming ridiculous. For batgirl’s amount of annual mileage, buying a used car is probably the best value decision.
Some cars do stay on the road forever, though. Just a couple days ago I looked in the rearview mirror and saw an AMC Eagle. I just about died laughing; I thought all of those were rotting away in desert junkyards.
That seems REALLY high for a transmission on a civic.
Thanks, and go As.
Is it? See I have no clue. Maybe I should call around? I like my guy but what do I know!
Are $1500/3200 the prices for the parts only, or the full job? I agree those are high if it’s just the parts, not so bad if the full job. Civics may be one of the least labor-demanding tranny swaps around.
More broadly though I think 80s/90s Civics are a good investment for repairs. It’s not usually ta car where a cascade of major problems ensues and it “goes Vietnam” on you (invested too much to stop now!).
All this said, the peace of mind from a nice car can be quite reassuring.
It is for parts and labor.
Thanks for all you fellas’ advice. I may go look at some cars on Sunday and see if I fall in love. If not, Thunder may live to drive another day.
Such populism.
The FK is wrong with this guy? How is it possible to be such a shithead?
And now he has already announced he won’t seek run again to spend more time with his family and is hinting he may not even finish the term he just got reelected for. Something really fucking weird is going on with this dude.
is his family in prison?
I just wikipedia’d him and it turns out he was born in Los Gatos, his father’s first wife was Kitty Dukakis, and he was a Jewish Democrat who became a Mormon Republican after going to BYU to be the placekicker on their football team.
wot
Oh cool he’s just openly trying to leverage his elected office into a cashout. Carry on.
Of course.
A’s sign Alejandro de Aza, DFA Eibner for Jairo.
I’m unconvinced the outfield has changed from smoldering dumpster fire it was at the end of the season.
I wouldn’t even care, if it seemed like Rajai et al were just keeping the bench warm for some outfield prospects with 2018 ETA. But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all.
“because we have a movement. it’s a movement like the world has never seen before.”
i’m gonna quote harry shearer out of context below, to put the above trump quote in context:
“it’s a movement. and we all need one… every day!”
So fun watching the weekenders arrive on Friday afternoon and spin their wheels. Recommendation to you FKers is, don’t come here this weekend; get out Saturday afternoon or don’t get home until Monday night is the way it looks. Holy crap is the snow fabulous though.
A pledge I’ve made to myself is to never ever drive back from Tahoe on a Sunday again. The last couple times have been excruciating even in fair weather.
It’s supposed to clear up after Monday, and if you’re a snow person I think next Tuesday-Thursday is your time to play hooky. This is my 8th winter up here, and 2010-2011 was great too but this is the most spectacular snow I’ve seen, with that forecast Sunday storm yet to come.
They plagiarized the FKing cake.
And it was mostly styrofoam. So perfect.
Perfect symbol for today’s GOP.
He said this to the CIA today. Nice work, everyone who couldn’t sully themselves by voting for Hillary because of her Iraq vote.
He also doesn’t tell anyone what he will and will not pay for.
24 hours in this administration already feels completely off the rails.
Cool debut at the WH podium for the new press secretary.
He… he was practically yelling at people and telling the media what they should be reporting on.
Thanks, and go As.
somewhat heartened that the NYT and WaPo (latter not as strongly yet) are at least writing headlines and some sentences in their articles in a way that shows they’re listening to lakoff.
can’t tell if it’s going to penetrate the disinfo-news readers though.
dream world, the next press conference none of the reporters show up. empty room. though maybe one cameraperson to take the pic of the empty room.
i am having trouble with the taxonomy of fake news and talking about them together doesn’t seem that fruitful toward preventing it. 3 types? more? BS articles written for clickbait profit. wrongly stated news to deliberately mislead. and a socialmediea-verse of misinformation stemming from (i totally believe it, otherwise i can’t explain some of the twitter convos i’ve seen) foreign/domestic trolls dropping unverifiable or false memes (in the original sense) that partly overlap or completely distort actual news, to which their colleagues agree or back up, not only creating the illusion that people actually think that way, but muddying anything that would otherwise be clearly known as true or false.
i mean, are “alternative facts” a 4th kind? or just an element of the main 3?
I found myself vigorously agreeing with this Burneko article, wherein he posits that the term “fake news” plays into the right’s hands. “At this point it is an actual tenet of American conservatism: This news story is not compatible with my beliefs, therefore it is biased, therefore it is not credible.” He prefers the term hoaxes.
Definitely. They pounced all over it. I think it took maybe two weeks top before the term was coopted into meaninglessness.
yeah, that’s pretty good.
and this is a gem: “Rick Perry, a moron who in all likelihood knots his fingers into his shoelaces more than twice per week…”
So bizarre.
I have a feeling we could all get that message telling us “you’ve already said that” a lot over the coming months.
Just rubbing our noses in it now.
Wonder what the Russians have on him.
I care nothing about the outcome of any football game, and yet I FKIng haaaaaate the Patriots.

Thing I learned today: Used exclusively as a reliever last season, Joe Blanton threw 80 innings, averaged 1 K per inning, struck out three times as many as he walked, and averaged just 0.79 dingers per nine innings.
While throwing harder than he’s ever thrown before. He also had even better ratios in 2015.
Still a FA
we ARE getting 2007-2011 back together!

Is milton bradly done with california penal league?
None of you FKers even wished me a happy National Day of Patriotic Devotion.
i was too busy praying to the constitution.
I was too busy searching through the bias media for reports of California illegal aliens voting and raging at the media machine for the lack of it.
1. My God cars have come a long way from crank windows and cassette players.
2. I’ve narrowed it down to the Subaru Imprezza, Prius C, and the Golf. I know Volkswagen is probably more on the dicey side, but boy I liked that car.
Any of you have any of these cars and have thoughts?
SUBARU!
Thanks, and go As.
The Imprezza is really very nice. Honestly the one thing tripping me up is that it’s almost a foot longer than my Civic, and I’m a person who ideally would have as small a car as reasonably possible. I can park my Civic virtually anywhere.
There’s some sort of 12 more inches of happiness and pleasure joke to be made…
The Prius is honestly the best bet for lots of city driving because the hybrid will get the best mileage in town by far. The Scooby will probably get the worst.
I can’t really speak to the VW.
Thanks, and go As.
i have a regular prius.
Its fine. but you cannot see out of it. Part of the problem with prius drivers is terrible visibility. the C looks like its a bit better, but I never test drove it. looking back, I think i should have at least looked. (plus its smaller and would fit places better)
The Prius C is actually 7″ shorter than my Civic but feels quite roomy!
A friend of ours had a C. Ed is no doubt right about the mileage and use for city driving, but when I drove our friend’s car on the highway it had zero pep, and it felt like it was tricky trying to retain a constant speed, lots of slowing and accelerating.
We have a new Subaru (Outback) and love it, as I loved my old pre-Outback wagon. I have also liked driving ms. s’ Jetta, and hear the Golf is great to drive. Seems like all solid choices. Just curious – any reason a new Civic isn’t on there?
It seems like because they now have the Fit as their small hatchback, they’ve re-styled the Civic into something longer and more masculine, maybe? I don’t know how really to describe it. It’s more than a foot longer than my old Civic and is just as expensive (if not more) than the Subaru. So I skipped that one.
Also ugh, that is a drag to hear. I went to bed settled on the Prius, but your highway info makes me re-think.
Ed do you find your Prius sluggish on the freeway? My Civic was peppy!
is sluggish. it doesn’t respond to emergencies. its not a car for fun.
i did get a ticket for going 88, though.
more road noise than my 2005 accord it replaced.
all in all, its ok. good for what I need right now. I don’t know how it would perform if I were a rugged outdoor type that skis and stuff.
will also say that even in my GTI and honda, I set cruise control on the highway and never think about losing momentum. But since I don’t go to the mountains, its not an issue
Bold!
I have noticed the “strong” tag randomly appearing at the front of some of my comments.
For some reason the ‘bold’ button is highlighted right when you hit the reply button, so an errant keystroke will set the strong tag if you start typing too quickly
Thanks, and go As.
errant keystroke?
never heard of such a thing
The first car Mrs. N and I bought together came down to a Prius vs. an Impreza (I don’t fit well in the C), and based off of 2012 models and our ability to pay the margin for a Prius we went that direction. No regrets at all (and, fwiw, Toyota’s voice control system is WAY better than Subaru’s, which we learned when we made the Forester our second car two years ago).
Prii are great, though you’ll have to do something to make yours stand out in parking lots (we got whale tail plates) since there’ll invariably be many of whatever color you choose. The Impreza does a lot better job of accommodating tall people, especially if you aren’t getting a Prius with an electric seat, though that’s not an issue for everyone.
VW’s are so so fun to drive.
but terrifying for even simple repairs.
This is good advice to have. I will be so pissed if I wind up with a bunch of expensive repairs. How has the Prius been repairs-wise?
As to visibility, I’ve been shocked how all of these have MUCH, MUCH worse visibility than my Civic, which has a giant rear window, and no backseat headrests. All I test drove had pretty crap visibility comparatively, and I’ve just resigned myself I’ll just need to get used to it.
VWs do have an absolutely cult-like following though, so if you really wanted to you could probably look up how to DIY almost everything online.
Thanks, and go As.
its a 2015. it has had no problems.
i had a 2000 GTI that SLF and I alternatively drove a lot. by 07, we were regularly sinking $1500 a trip to the mechanic. till the turbo finally blew out.
good mileage though
Our 2012 Prius has also had no problems.
This should be maximum snow, with a week of dry weather ahead. That’s what I navigate to get out of the garage. Bumping snowbanks at 2 mph doesn’t cause much damage. Awesome snow is great but my muscles need a break. I clear it with the snowblower out to where the sun comes across horizontally; out there is a private road plowed by the HOA.
While some of that is boulders, there’s a little rock that protrudes out into the driveway on the left side, looking out from the garage. I have the rock marked with one of those orange snow stakes. The stake is 6 feet high, it’s about 3 feet to the left of the snow wall you see there, and it has completely disappeared.
It’s too bad the HOA doesn’t include the drive way as well. I can’t imagine it would be much more per house than it costs for the road.
The HOA is responsible for the driveway, technically, but it’s not the staff’s priority. We have a lot of private roads which are top priority, not just for residents’ access but that’s a fire department requirement. After that are the open parking areas, and only about 40% of the units have garages, the rest are in open parking (and holy shit if you ever buy a place at Tahoe and plan to spend time here in winter do NOT buy a place without a garage; I paid about $50K extra in addition to price per square foot of living space in order to get one with a garage, and don’t remotely regret the expense).
So when there’s 3 inches of snow, yes the pickup truck guy with the plow attachment will clear it for me. When it’s snowing endlessly for days, if you want to get in and out on your own schedule you are on your own. We could hire a couple more staff people but you couldn’t get enough owners to agree to the additional assessment. We hire temps as well for snow removal, but guess what, we’re not the only ones looking for them after major storms.
Yikes. Just one more reason I don’t plan to live in the cold.
The first place I lived here, I rented, and the landlord had a gas-powered snowblower there to clear the driveway. I loved that thing.
I was excited, when I bought this place, to hear that the HOA cleared snow to the garage door, but observing clearing operations after the first big storm made it clear I needed my own snowblowing capability. I bought a cheap electric snowblower, basically a lawnmower except with the blades in front and the chute out the top. I only used it a couple times the first two very dry winters, then more last year, and this year I’m running it into the ground. It works like a champ, great for the price, the problem being that there’s no transmission unlike with the gas blower so a lot of physical effort goes into pushing it (but none for throwing the snow, which it’s great at).
are these those things ray fosse is always on about?
no. but Ray would never strt a war with food stuffs
you either fight with foodstuff, or against it.
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your input on this car stuff. One thing I’m learning about myself is that I just don’t like change. I feel like if my current car could just go forever I’d be happy as a clam. However, I’m coming around to a lot better safety features so I know I need to bite the bullet and pick something. And I need to realize that every choice has tradeoffs so I need to rank what is most important and work from there.
Whichever one goes fastest, obv.
Thanks, and go As.
Looks like a West Side Club rebrand/remodel is underway.
As the only FKer who went to the actual Shibe Park, probably, I’m enthused!
shibe park prices?
We’ll pay a dime for a fresh bag of peanuts and complain about the ripoff!
Or we’ll pay peanuts for a dime bag.
Enjoyable and informative read on the bizarre “mutual option.”
is it a way around the qualifying offer?
I believe a team can still make a QO after an option is declined.
This David Brooks column is just bizarre. For all of his psuedo-intellectual preening, he is so small minded.
what’s a little martial law between friends
Thanks, and go As.
Friends?
The A’s ZiPS projections are pretty terrible, naturally.
Matt Chapman as the projected third best non-pitcher with a No.1 Comp of “Kevin Eberwein” is not encouraging.
See this is why I don’t go out of my way to go to games. They’re clearly not even trying to be competitive.
Thanks, and go As.
I have no plans to take any road trips this year. I do plan on a couple trips to the Coliseum for something like Tuesday night-Wednesday afternoon because I haven’t been there since 2015.
They’ve sold off a tremendous amount of talent over the last 2 years for poor returns. They’re banking on the arrival of minor leaguers who are really meh to average at best (with maybe the exception of Barreto). Their major league strategy has been dull, unimaginative, and uninspiring.
So yeah, no one should be surprised.
Barreto being mlb.com’s #10 SS prospect…
Ugh.
Uuuuuggggggghhhh
Gross.
Not even trying to pretend to consider to hide the fact that he’s using the presidency as a profit center.

I am ok with this, by 2021, if not before they will not have any patronage. there is no reason to stay there and pay the presidential influence prices if you don’t get any influence
looooooooool
bwahahahah they DFAd Dillon Overton for this shit?
Thanks, and go As.
I was rosterbating yesterday and thought, they don’t have a utility infielder unless it’s Pinder or Wendle. And then had the snarky thought, I wonder where Rosales is now.
I figured it would be Wendle, for platoon purposes.
I would have preferred Luis Valbuena (who signed with LAA) to either/both of Plouffe and Rosales.
I also get the feeling that they are either expecting Jed! to spend most of the year on the DL again, or planning to offload him.
BoMel says I am wrong.
Best shape of his life!
I made the point recently that the A’s were spending modest amounts of money in wildly inefficient ways.
Between Plouffe/Alonso/Rosales/Lowrie, that’s almost 20 million this year (depending on what Rosales’s salary is) on “utility infielder”.
1.25M with another 1M in possible bonuses.
Thanks, and go As.
To be obtained if he reaches 30 IP
made me laugh
Isn’t the league minimum give-or-take $900k by now?
Great undervalued pickup, ass-sucking is huge these days.
huh, this is weird
On one hand, it’s clearly a small sample fluke. But on the other hand, there is a coherent story and that story is that Rosie can turn into Trogdor if he stops worrying about making contact.
wtf. that is crazy.
Something that just occurred to me: There has not been a Republican in the White House when the census was taken since 1990. The Republican party has become exponentially crazier and more Machiavellian since then.
Meaning, not only should we be concerned that a Trump Commerce Department might be particularly inclined to cook the books, there’s also the question of whether the current Republican Party as a whole will be inclined to monkey with it anyway. The incentive is certainly there to, for example, intentionally undercount poor and immigrant communities in places like California to screw it in congressional reapportionment, electoral vote counts, and funding formulas. And nothing they have done in the last 20 years would suggest that they would see fucking with the count as beyond the pale politically.
Something tells me we are going to hear a lot about this in a couple of years.
Doesn’t the actual counting occur in 2021?
Hmm, not sure.
“The Census Bureau must transmit the total population tabulations to the states within one year of census day, customarily April 1 of the year following the census.”
So that gives a new administration two months to undo any ratfuckery (or introduce new ratfuckery). Pretty tough, I would think.
the 2020 census is supposed to be primarily online, because costs. RFery could happen in the count itself (whoops! we didn’t know poor ethnic communities had no interest in waiting in line to use the commodore amiga at the library!!). yes, sure, tech will be more everywhere by then. but still.
I have friends who made some cash counting the homeless in Golden Gate Park last time around. There’s no other way to count such folks than shoe leather.
I guaran-fking-tee you that Trump will take the position that the count has to be done so as to intentionally exclude immigrant communities since some of them might be undocumented, and/or try to use the census effort as a way to find people to deport. He’ll probably say that he’s doing it out loud, too, at a campaign rally.
Pretty sure even undocumented folks still count for the census.
They do. But when DJT finds that out…
Maybe he’ll have an stroke?
Well, I’ll refuse to answer such bullshit.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t really solve the problem.
Sigh. Nope. And I fear neither will removing Donald since that seems highly unlikely.
My thesis is that the Rs will do this, Donald or not. They just won’t be as ostentatious about it. The aim is to push people into the shadows so they don’t get counted, which redounds to their personal benefit as Rs.
Litigation is the only solution here, probably.
Here we go
Sold out :(
So, some baseball buddies and I have been planning the 2018 Spring Training in AZ for a couple of years now. I was really looking forward to it, as the last time was a lot of fun (if nothing else the WARMTH).
However I am really struggling now to get excited about it or even motivated enough to go. I am struggling to get motivated about quite a few things recently, but visiting the US, and perhaps even more so AZ, is quite representative of what causes the struggles. It’s the general broad feeling that there is ever increasingly overwhelming dominance of the ignorant, the one that can be tested in every step of the everyday life. But it is also the specific one, of walking into “the heartland of enemy’s territory” and it just makes me sad, because on the personal level, I had so many more positive experiences with the people I met from and in the States.
Almost every time I go to the States I have to apply for a Visa (because I don’t go all that often and they normally expire after five years). This means travelling to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf for a personal interview and although there is always chicanery involved (for example if it is raining you have to wait in a queue strategically placed so that you will get wet; you can neither bring your cell phone inside, nor leave it in a searching room, so if you are alone and didn’t come by car, you have to go back to the central station to rent a box there, then run back and hope that you don’t lose your slot and have to reschedule…) the interviews themselves were short and simple if you had the good documentation (working for an American company and going on business helps).
I’ve been humiliated by different immigration and other officials often enough that it shouldn’t matter, but I just don’t know if I can bring myself to eat shit from some Trump’s extended arm apparatchik to gain access to Trump’s America and Arpaio’s Arizona. “Yes sir, I think I am qualified to visit your country due to my unique set of experiences, most important being growing up in a dictatorship and being shot at for being of a wrong nationality, sir!”
I know you guys have lost much more in the immediate effects, but lots of us around the world feel like we lost your country as well, as imperfect as it was before, too.
I hear you man, and I don’t blame you for having those feelings. One of the saddest things about this whole ridiculous situation is that we are hanging a “go away” sign on the country in a way that will cost us both in dollars and stature. All for no reason.
If it makes you feel any better, though, Arpaio got voted out of office in November, and he could be in jail by the time you visit if Trump/Sessions don’t shut down the prosecution that’s underway.

This is one of the things I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. We all learned about “America the great melting pot” from an early age, but living somewhere like the bay area really makes it evident how, even with our country’s other faults, so many of the smartest, hardest working, most ambitious people from all over the rest of the world want to come here. They are sending their best. But hey, let’s try starving our universities and tech companies of half their talent, and see how that works out for us.
We just lost a hire today … Iranian computer whiz.
We as in NASA? Because of a hiring freeze?
We as in Berkeley Lab. Why as in executive orders on immigration.
That sucks
Did you get yours, too?
No – he was waiting on his green card, which is now on indefinite hold.
True. It goes even further, because some that might not have the academic credentials when they immigrate really press it onto their kids that education is the key to success, so it is the second generation as well. When I was in Syracuse, I ended in the NY State Math finals. And when the finalists of that were announced, I remember thinking, blessed with an ignorance of a 17-year old, that we were all foreigners, because I think most everybody was Asian-American or Indian-American.
Hey, don’t forget the Jews. (I would have been in the NYSML around the same time. I think I went to a state tournament in Tappan Zee.)
I don’t remember where ours was held, only that I had a track meet later that day and had to run. But the year was 1989/1990 (it was sometimes in the winter, the finals were)
The one I’m thinking of would have been the previous year.
Did you guys have to do the final-three round on the overhead projectors, so that the rest would see what you write to solve it?
I don’t remember. Sounds vaguely familiar. I wasn’t one of the finalists at the state level anyway.
I wasn’t one of the last three either. I remember because I found it pretty cool how they made a show out of it and because of the contrasting styles of the math competitions in the US and in Yugoslavia. In Yugoslavian finals the year before we were handed an envelope with five questions and had something like three hours for it, and most questions were highly theoretical, “fora given group of… prove that there can be no…”, whereas the ones in the states were easier, but with much less time and almost immediate evaluation.
What city did you go to school to?
We might have coincided on some Bills home games, though. I seem to remember the one vs. the Dolphins, where the stadium crowd record was broken (82,408?)
Went to high school in Buffalo.
89-90 I was in college in Boston. I think I saw the Bills (lose) in Foxborough that year, but don’t know if I made it to any games back in Buffalo.
Wow.
So, your historian of the universe capabilities go beyond the internet.
I appear to have some hoarder tendencies.

And I just flew off the road. Pretty amazingly, both I and the Spider are in a relatively good shape
Yikes!
You, that’s not news, you’re obviously indestructible. But the Spider, those things break if you sneeze on them.
(glad you’re ok)
Heh. And thanks.
um, when I mess up my car, I back into a utility pole. You accident better than us.
I don’t really know what happened. I guess I hit the ice patch. Anyway just entering a tunnel going about 65 mph (luckily two lanes, one way, 11 PM with almost no other traffic) on a rather long right curve my behind started overtaking me. I practiced this with my Dad many years ago, so at least I stayed way clear of the brakes. I managed to change the rotation about four or five times which just got me out of the tunnel and to the place where there were some bushes on the right side and when the next swerve started taking the car in that direction I just let it slide, because my wheels were very close to getting blocked and I didn’t like the prospect of ending this on the left side, hitting the separation plank and possibly tumbling over it. Put my forearms on the sides of my head and hoped for the best, and the very best it was, indeed. I’m not even really bruised, just a little sore, and my car looks rather fine. I lost the registration plate somewhere in the process and my right side wheels are battered. Possibly damaged axle joint and have to check for leakages today, but I was able to drive away afterwards.
The eerie thing is that about five seconds before this whole thing started happening I had a thought I couldn’t shake off, that I just know how one day I will fly off the road and it will be it. I dream about it from time to time, and I started thinking how it will be a second in which I will know that I lost control and that there’s nothing I can do and that my life will either end or will forever be changed. Glad I was wrong about the parts of it.
OK, now I’m more certain as to what has happened, as there was a major accident in that same tunnel this morning. Probably hit the same ice spot as I did, and didn’t make it out of the tunnel, poor bastards. On the plus side, I was able to stop there briefly, park between two police vans, and search for and find my registration plate in the bushes.
naturally
So, the entire senior management of the State Department just resigned.
Holy shit.
Thanks, and go As.
Sort of. They submitted resignations as a matter of course, but unlike in the usual situation, Trump accepted them.
He’s going to put in loyalists, not those pesky “diplomats” who might say annoying things like “don’t antagonize our southern neighbor and important ally and trading partner for no earthly reason.”
Sick fucks
who do they want to torture?
where is the “24” situation when you know this guy has info that will help?
Neither. I’d use who he is and use that to investigate the fuck out of him and any known associates. Coincidentally, there’s a shit ton of information to be gleaned from that including, no doubt, where your son is. But no, let’s water board him and hope to not waste too much time on wild goose chases. Sigh.

Seriously, incredible stuff. These guys are unbelievable.

495 GPa is nearly 5 million times atmospheric pressure. That must be a bad ass pressure vessel.
Then I read further down and found out that they are using something called a “diamond anvil cell”, which sounds appropriately like the title of a black metal song.
Diamond Anvil Cell was the name of my college grindcore band in college.
Also interesting to read that the National Bureau of Standards became the leader in the DAC field because of their unique access to a large supply of diamonds, disposing of those confiscated by US customs agents!
That’s center of the earth like, right?
wikipedia says that the pressure in Earth’s inner core is 330-360 GPa. So their brootal diamond anvil cell yields somewhat higher pressure. But it is also hot in Earth’s core*, so any hydrogen there would be in the liquid metal phase, not solid metal. But I think that Earth’s core is mostly heavy elements (iron and up), right?
* Interesting coincidence: temperature of Earth’s core is 5700K, which is the same as the temperature of the Sun’s photosphere (visible outer layer)
From 495 GPa?!
Make sure you do it slowly…
Actually, the volume of that cell is probably so small that you could vent it and not even notice.
…until it’s too late! muah ha ha.
(are we talking SBDs here?)
Where’s Bed when we need him?
BSOHL
We’ve found the one thing Democrats can work with him on.
Like the ACA, I’m sure Trump was thinking about scrapping it with no replacement.
God Emperor for Life counts as a replacement plan
How do you say Caudillo in Murican?
nah. the real gaffe is that the word college made him think this was about education. but he was gonna replace it with trump university.
there would be no questions of his legitimacy if we only have his popular vote win to look at
Protip: if ever asked to manage an office move, consider gnawing off your own leg instead.
I switched the moving tags on a bunch of stuff on my office move. ended p with tthe good chair for a day while the guy was trying to figure it out.
Winner
Yes, now imagine 100 of your co-workers doing the same as you. Then picture all of you tagging scores of pieces of furniture that weren’t supposed to be moved at all. Also, be sure to ignore six months of warnings to use this as your chance to purge old paper files; instead, fetishize them and pack every one! Finally, picture all 100 miscreants on Day 1 in their new offices, complaining loudly to the move coordinator because there’s too much furniture and boxes to be able to move much less work.
I hate you all.
OMG We moved Cat’s PJs 5 times. It was pretty much a nightmare every time, although we did get it down to somewhat of a science.
If I ever hear one more peep out of the GOP that they’re the party representing “real American values” ever again I will fucking scream. These people are pathetic, spineless, cowardly monsters.
why do people buy this. I am an american. I am real. so are more people than them
It’s a national mythology going way, way back. It’s embedded in our culture. It’s embedded in our language. It’s embedded in our constitution. No matter how urbanized and multicultural the country becomes, white folks living in small towns are always the archetypal Americans in our national imagination. Cable news types, and even places like the New York Times, fall into promoting the mythology out of wanting to prove their Americanness “despite” living in New York, Washington, etc.
The Democratic coalition’s implicit challenge to that mythology explains a lot of what happened in the last election, I think. And with the post-election attempts to explicitly write places like California out of Americanness, this is really coming to a head.
“People” don’t buy it. Just enough of the press does.
Absolutely disgusted right now.
Finally watched the last Sherlock. Weird. If that’s the last one ever, bummer of a way to go out.
Indeed. Really lost the plot from the first season, which was SOOOOOOOOO good.
Yeah, this whole last season seemed like it was trying to be a different (and not nearly as good) show.
The first two eps of this season were at least a little fun and intriguing. The last one was just grim, and the plot didn’t even hold together.
I’m really going to miss Martin Freeman’s Watson though. Do I need to watch Fargo or, god forbid, The Hobbit? Maybe it’s time for a rewatch of the The Office.
Fargo is really great. Both seasons.
Ditto this. I was ready to not like Season 1 because I love the film so much. Then I was prepared to be disappointed by Season 2, because 1 was so great. And season 2 was even better.
I’m the opposite. I expected to hate season 1 because of Billy Bob Thornton, but I LOVED season 1. Season 2 I just thought was OK. I think it just depends which set of characters grab you.
No kidding. Huge disappointment.

A start.
I see compromise legislation in our future.
No. Democratic senators (so far) are being fantastic on this one.
I hope
Limited, not hollow.
Another order here, from the Central District of California.
This one explicitly finds strong likelihood of success on the merits that the EO violates both the INA and the Establishment Clause, and it affirmatively orders the government to undeport someone who the government shipped out while the TRO application was pending.
that is fantastic.
Let’s see if its followed
I think we are hurtling rapidly toward a moment where the WH openly defies court orders and effectively says “how many divisions has the
popejudiciary.” I think they are looking for that fight. It may not be this weekend, but if they are going to do it, having the defiance executed by border patrol officers who were vocally pro-Trump during the campaign would be likely.
*ahem*
This sort of thing is why Senate Democrats need to use every procedural tool at their disposal to block not only Sessions and a Supreme Court nominee, but as many nominees to the district and circuit courts as possible. He will try to put people on the bench who will bow down to his supreme authority.
Isn’t that true though? (rather than a defiance of the court order)
“All halted admissions will remain halted” seems to defy the orders.
I thought the orders were that you can’t send people back home, not that you need to let them in.
The D. Mass. order said they can’t detain or remove people with valid visas or approved refugee applications. That is at least some people (maybe only people who landed in Boston) who they had to let in.
*coughs*
made his ruling, let’s seem him enforce it
This is the better one.
*screaming internally*
depends on what “is” is
TRO granted in the Central District of California enjoining the government from “removing, detaining, or blocking the entry” of anyone with a valid visa. Preliminary Injunction hearing on Feb. 10. Until then, the executive order should be dead for passengers heading to LAX at least.
I thought they pushed the CLE deadline to March 1 for some reason. Maybe I’m crazy. Either way I did like 12 hours this month to get it under the wire
i read that when I logged into the website. I don’t read their garbage when it comes to me.
But there was a Feb 1 deadline on their website too.
also, I had to order a plastic card.

Pretty good company there.
Fewest PAs on that list though but definitely encouraging.
Centuries of British devotion to protocol and ceremony have long since learned to accommodate authoritarian strongmen. At least they haven’t elected one.
Not in their own country, anyway.
